This is the sixth newsletter of the Committee on Coastal and Maritime Hydraulics of IAHR which deals with aspects of maritime
and coastal environment, primarily in terms of hydraulic research and engineering. The goal of this newsletter is to inform about
our activities and to increase the number of those who are interested in coastal and maritime issues.
Due to the many activities of our Leadership Team members it was not possible to produce more issues, that is why our
activities’ report are concentrated in this one. However since the 34th
IAHR Congress held in Brisbane, Australia, we have
organized some events.
The Working Group on Maritime Renewable Energy has met in Porto in January (see report on page 12). In May 2012 we have
organized in Porto the 5th
CoastLab Course on Coastal Numerical Models and in March/April 2013 the 6th
and 7th
ones dedicated
to the “Spanish Recommendations for Coastal Works Design”. The CoastLab 2012 Conference was held in Gent, Belgium, under
the great organization of Prof. Peter Troch. A PhD Course has also taken place during this event. The 5th
CoastLab Conference is
scheduled to Varna, Bulgaria, in September 2014.
During the 35th
IAHR Congress, to be held in Chengdu, China, September 2013, it is scheduled a Symposium on “Impact of
Extreme Hydrodynamic Forces on Infrastructure”. Interesting information is that 10% of the abstracts received (212 on 2147)
were submitted under the theme D – Coastal and Maritime Engineering.
Feel free to contribute to the next newsletters. We do rely on your support. Please do not forget to send your contributions
and suggestions, and I am looking forward to seeing you in Chengdu, next September, don’t miss it!

CoastLab Teaching School, May, 2012, Faculty of Engineering of Porto, Portugal
Theme: “Coastal Numerical Models”
The CoastLab Network – the network for small and medium coastal engineering laboratories - with the support of IAHR-Coastal
and Maritime Hydraulics Committee and Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation has organized from May 21 through 23, 2012, the
“Fifth CoastLab Teaching School”.
Once more the UPorto - Faculty of Engineering (FEUP) hosted the 3-day school. An international group of 36 young professionals
with a background in coastal sciences was welcomed with participants from a number of EU countries, namely Portugal, Spain,
Denmark, Germany, France, Poland, UK - England, UK - Wales, Norway, and UK - Northern Ireland.
The 21-hours of the “Fifth CoastLab Teaching School” were designed as a hands-on application-oriented training course on
coastal numerical models. Experts from European consultancy and R&D organizations were invited to give lectures on the most
important numerical models to simulate: (i) wave propagation; (ii) wave-structure interaction; (iii) wave hydrodynamics;
sediment transport; and (iv) design of coastal structures. Namely, COULWAVE, numerical modeling of wave structures
interaction with RANS equations, MIKE products, MOHID, Delft 3D, XBEACH, and BREAKWAT. The training has included lectures
on the theoretical concepts behind the models, applications to practical consultancy and research projects, and hands-on
practical work with MIKE and Delft 3D models.
The feedback received from students and professors was very positive. Suggestions to be included in future similar organizations
concern the extension of the school duration to make possible a wider period of practice.

CoastLab 2012 – 4th
International Conference on the Application of Physical Modeling to Port and Coastal Protection 2012,
September 17–20, Gent, Belgium.
Coastlab12, the fourth international conference on the application of physical modelling to port and coastal protection, has
been organized in Ghent, Belgium, from 17-20 September, 2012, by the Department of Civil Engineering of Ghent University,
jointly with Local Organising Committee members from Flanders Hydraulics Research, the Catholic University of Leuven, the
Flanders Marine Institute, under the auspices of the International Association of Hydro-Environment Engineering and Research
(IAHR).
For the first time, the Coastlab conference was held in Central Europe, after Porto (2006), Bari (2008) and Barcelona (2010). The
host city of Ghent is a historic and at the same time, modern vibrant Belgian city close to the North Sea. Despite the relative
short Belgian coastline (merely 70 km long), marine research and coastal engineering is booming in Belgium, with more than 100
marine research groups, focusing e.g. on coastal flooding management, harbour development, breakwater and dike design and
construction, sand suppletion techniques, ocean energy, and a wide scope of marine research. A significant number of
presentations from Belgian institutes and companies gave an excellent overview of the recent coastal engineering activities in
Belgium.
Coastlab12 provided the forum to discuss the latest developments in physical modelling in the field of coastal and harbour
engineering. The conference served the Coastlab network for small and medium coastal engineering laboratories, exchanging
information about instrumentation, equipment and field campaign techniques. The simultaneous scientific, engineering and
industrial participation established exchange of knowledge between academia and industry.
Despite a busy summer with several major conferences planned in the same summer period, the international Coastlab12
Conference was a great success. The conference venue, a former Dominican monastery situated in the heart of Ghent, offered
the ideal meeting location for the Coastlab12 participants. The technical program included 3 renowned keynote lecturers, and
more than 120 (oral and poster) presentations in 24 technical sessions, presented and discussed by 160 participants from 30
countries.
The first keynote lecture was given by dr. Jentsje van der Meer (Van der Meer Consulting B.V., The Netherlands), presenting his
latest research on new simulators as hydraulic test facilities at dikes and other coastal structures in situ. The second keynote
lecture was given by prof. Hocine Oumeraci (Department of Hydromechanics and Coastal Engineering, TU Braunschweig,
Germany), who described lessons learned from more than 20 years experience using the Grosser Wellenkanal (GWK). The third
keynote lecture was given by prof. Tom O’Donoghue (School of Engineering, University of Aberdeen, United Kingdom), who
presented the latest research results from laboratory studies of wave-driven sand transport processes.
The oral and poster presentations were of very high level, and fruitful discussions on the presented research topics took place
during the sessions and in coffee breaks. The social events (reception in the traditional Flemish building of the city hall, and
banquet in the historic medieval castle of Ghent) contributed to the general conference atmosphere, which was pleasant and
friendly, warmly inviting for the open exchange of information and networking between young researchers and young coastal
engineers on the one hand, and senior experienced researchers and coastal engineers on the other hand. As such, Coastlab has
become an acknowledged platform for straightforward exchange of information and experience between juniors and seniors in
the field of coastal engineering.

At the same time, a successful exhibition has been organized, bringing the Coastlab12 participants in continuous contact with
major research laboratories, experimental instrumentation and facility providers and well-known companies in the field of
coastal engineering. Ghent University, the Flanders Hydraulics Research laboratory, IAHR, HR Wallingford, Rexroth - Bosch
Group, Jan De Nul Group, Nortek B.V. and ELSCOLAB N.V., have taken part as exhibitors in the Coastlab12 conference.
Prior to the Coastlab12 conference, a 1 day PhD MasterClass has been organized at the Department of Civil Engineering, Ghent
University, to provide the PhD MasterClass participants with useful knowledge and discussion on issues dealing with
experimental and numerical modeling of water waves and their interaction with coastal structures and vegetation. During the
morning session, 4 internationally established researchers (Pedro Lomonaco, Holger Schüttrumpf, Giorgio Bellotti and Jens Peter
Kofoed) gave a lecture on their latest research results. In the afternoon discussion sessions, young researchers presented their
research and research questions, which were subsequently discussed in more detail under guidance of several senior experts.
The reception at the end of the day, organized at the wave flume facility of the Department of Civil Engineering of Ghent
University, provided a perfect relaxing informal networking opportunity.
A post-conference tour on 20 September 2012 offered the conference participants a visit of the R&D facilities at Flanders
Hydraulics Research (the governmental hydraulics laboratory in Antwerp) in the morning, a relaxing lunch in the Casino of
Ostend with a magnificent view on the coastline, and in the afternoon, a visit to the Ostend Harbour and an onsite walk on the
recently finished coastal defence structures (breakwater, dike with stilling wave basin) in the city centre.
The Coastlab12 organisers are very grateful to the Golden Sponsors Flanders Hydraulics Research and Ghent University, to the
Silver Sponsors Jan De Nul Group, Rexroth Bosch Group, HR Wallingford, and to the exhibitors Nortek, Elscolab, and the Flemish
Institute for Technology Research VITO. In addition, we thank all administrative and technical staff members for supporting the
organization of Coastlab12. We’re looking forward to meeting you in Varna, Bulgaria, for the next conference Coastlab14!

2. Review of Working Groups Activities
Information was given regarding recent developments of the Composite Modelling WG (James). Under the scope of Hydralab III
a monograph on Physical Modelling Guidelines was published as well as a paper for the SI of the JHR. More study cases are
being collected for an extended paper. The WG on Wave Energy met during the IAHR Europe Congress in Edinburgh. The other
WGS must be encouraged to increase their level of activity.
WGS are encouraged to write new monographs. Possible themes: Marine Sea Outfalls; Wave Energy; Groundwater; Dredging. It
is necessary to verify potential gaps in these subjects involving other organizations as IWA, PIANC, etc.
3. Planning of Future Activities
The possibility of a parallel event in Chengdu is being discussed with the 35th
IAHR Conference organizers. Possible subjects are
Long Waves, Sea Level Change, Submerged Coastal Structures, or Nearshore Wave Modelling. Pengzhi Lin will help on this.
Ramon suggested a Seminar on Large Hydraulic Projects in Chengdu.
Next CoastLab Conference will be held in Gent, Belgium, between 17 and 20 September 2012. Other CoastLab Courses will be
held in Porto, Portugal, but dates are not yet defined. These events are fully supported by IAHR/CMH. The Conference was
adopted formally by the CMH.
4. Collaboration with COPRI on Upcoming IAHR Congresses
The possibility of a better cooperation between IAHR and COPRI must be analysed.
5. Collaboration with the JSCE on Tsunami Research
Memos suggested that cooperation with JSCE should be strengthened maybe through the organization of a seminar on tsunami
research.

AGENDA:
Work through action items from WG MRE conference call 10 Nov 2011 (C. George, M. Hartnett, E. Serrano, M. Wosnik).
1. Arrange physical meeting during COASTLAB Workshop in Porto
Discussion: Happening now.
2. Establish MRE Listserver – Action: Estibaliz to discuss Elsa/Bea re setting up a new listserv with Mailman software – and
report back to Mike and Martin, Deadline: Porto meeting.
3. Establish List of Professionals/activities: This fits with the development concept of the new IAHR website. Action: CBG to
report further in Porto meeting – when new system installation is under way.
Discussion (2. and 3. combined):
Action: We need to initiate this List (MH + MW w/ CBG)
- Suggestion V.Heller: Access to reviewer database, e.g., JHR?
- Invite persons to join WG/IAHR?
- LinkedIn group for IAHR-MRE (open group vs. invitation only)
4. Events
We agreed that there are already too many events – WG should focus on collaborating with existing groups and build on existing
events.
• Dublin 2013 or 2014 Event (no date yet) – more news from M.Hartnett in Feb 2012
MAREN project will close with big event in Dublin. WG can back this event and provide continuity once project
completed.
• IAHR LAD Congress in Jeju in August, 2012
Given the strong level of interest in Korea in this topic and that IAHR held seminar on MRE in World Congress in 2005 C.
George to investigate interest in LOC to hold a special seminar or workshop. If there is local interest then WG could
support.
• IAHR World Congress Chengdu September 2013
C. George to identify possible interest in this topic in China - again for possible support of WG.
Deadline to organize special session? Lin (one of organizers) – (MW-MH contact Chris re. process…)
Special journal issue or Monograph? Timeline to be defined.
New item
5. M. Hartnett and others in Ireland were approached by industry to organize Masters Course in Marine Renewable Energy,
specialized within hydrodynamics/hydraulics. Comment of P. Frigaard: linear learning vs. parts as needed.
