Our President’s

Message….

2015 is but a distant memory and 2016 is well on its way. We here at Columbia have been working

very hard to make this year an exciting one for all of our members. So please make sure that your dues are

paid and come down to a General Meeting so you're sure not to miss any of the excitement.

I would like to thank Police Commissioner Bratton for attending our January General Meeting and swearing-

in the 2016-17 Board of Officers. I am looking forward to serving this organization as your president for the

next two years. Our Board of Officers is filled with dedicated members who are willing to dedicate their time

and effort to this organization. Together we will work to make this organization better

Supreme Court Justice Antonin Scalia, the first Italian-American to serve on the U.S. Supreme Court passed

away on February 13. Justice Scalia was born in Trenton, New Jersey and moved to the Elmhurst section of

Queens where he attended P.S. 13. He attended Xavier High School in Manhattan, and then college at

Georgetown University in Washington, D.C. Scalia obtained his law degree from Harvard Law School. Scal-

ia was appointed to the Supreme Court by President Ronald Reagan in 1986. The Columbia Association of-

fers our condolences to the family of Justice Scalia, the son of Italian immigrants who worked hard to

achieve success.

Our Annual Dinner-Dance will take place on Friday, May 6 at El Caribe Caterers in Brooklyn. Our Lieuten-

ant Giuseppe Petrosino Man-of-the-Year Award will be presented to long-time member and supporter, Chief

of Personnel Raymond Spinella. Chief Spinella has been a proud member of our organization for his entire

career and has always supported this organization. Our Italian-American Achievement Award will be pre-

sented to Chazz Palminteri. Bronx-born and raised, Chazz Palminteri has more than 50 movies to his credit

including The Usual Suspects, Bullets Over Broadway, and A Bronx Tale just to name a few. Past-President

Timmy Motto of Fraternal Order of Police Lodge #69 will receive the Patrolman Philip Cardillo Commemo-

ration Award for his tireless dedication to the memory of Patrolman Cardillo. Timmy was instrumental in

getting the street in front of the Police Academy in College Point renamed to honor Patrolman Phillip Car-

dillo. We will also be honoring the commitment and bravery of three members of our organization with the

on our website at www.nypdcolumbia.org.

you are in a command that does not have a delegate, or if you are not sure who your delegate is, please con-

tact your borough trustee. There are many more recognized ethnic and fraternal organizations in existence

today than there were twenty years ago. It is imperative that we enlist EVERY Italian-American member of

this department to ensure that we remain one of the largest.

Hello Columbia Members,

With 2016 upon us its time to talk

membership again. I reiterate from

this time last year that the associa-

tions backbone is the membership.

Delegates please start getting ready

to collect dues and sign up new

members. Reach out to new person-

nel in your command. Your members

might be also searching for you.

Lets make 2016 a year of positive

membership gains. There is a lot of

movement in the NYPD now. So it is

important for you delegates to track

down your members. February 23rd

is the second general meeting of the

new year. I invite every member to

attend. Lots of information is dis-

seminated at our general meeting.

Along with good food and laughs

you will enjoy every minute. Com-

mand delegates put together a

group and take a table at the meet-

ing. There is always plenty of room.

We will be repeating most of our

annual event again this year, so check

our website and facebook page for

times, dates and location.

Till next time….
