With this issue, we would like to cel-

ebrate the Community College of Qa-

tar and its first ever official newspa-

per, “Al-Mujtama’a”. After a long few

months we have finally put together

a newspaper that the college can be

proud of. We are happy to be working

with Planet News Business.

In this issue you will find articles and

photographs from both faculty and

students. We are also interested in ex-

panding our team for articles. If you

are interested in submitting any arti-

cles in the future, please contact me

at: [email protected].

My vision for the paper is to publish

the very best articles and keep faculty

and students up to date on happen-

ings in and out of the college. I am

happy to field your questions about

potential articles.

I would like to express my gratitude

to QAPCO for their sponsorship and

support. Without them, this newspa-

per would not be possible.

Finally, I would like to thank all of our

sponsors and partners we have in our

community and the entire faculty and

staff for their dedication and vision.

They make it all happen.

Enrollment at the Community College of Qatar has topped nearly two thousand students, approximately seven timeslarger than its original size of 300, states current CCQ enrollment records.

This septuple growth combined

with an increase in Faculty and Staff

has resulted in a series of sweep-

ing changes across both campuses

to alleviate any expansion pains felt

as CCQ enters into its fourth year of

development. “As of today, the enroll-

ment headcount for the 2013 Fall is

1, 936,” stated Dana Fields, the new

Registrar and Director of CCQ Admis-

sions.

A 33.3% increase over the Spring, this

has required CCQ Administrators, Fa-

cilities Managers, and the Executive

Board to re-strategize how to best

properly allocate space and divvy up

supplies among CCQ’s growing num-

bers.

Throughout the month of September,

Administrators discussed and imple-

mented changes aimed at transform-

ing old rooms and areas not normally

used by the majority of the college

body into classrooms and offices.

These many changes have included

halving the C-Ring Learning Center in

two and building three separate offices

inside for the Workforce and Commu-

nity Development Department, Spon-

sorship Committee, and the Regis-

trar’s Office. Additionally, ground floor

offices have been transformed into

classrooms, and the first and second

floor lounge areas of C-Ring campus

were turned into teaching spaces.

West Bay saw similar changes as

ground floor offices were vacated by

Faculty for administrators and the

administration area transformed to

house more room for Student Servic-

es. “We all have to do our part to ease

the strains brought on by the growth

of our college,” stated Gregory Twidal,

Learning Center Coordinator for CCQ.

As the Community College of Qatar

enters into its fourth official year in

Qatar, accreditation, a third campus,

and even more students and Facilita-

tors can be seen looming in the not-

too-distant future.

appointed to chair the English Lan-

guage Center and will preside as

administrative lead for the English as

a Second Language (ESL) Depart-

ment. In her new position, her focus

will include the implementation of the

new ESL quarterly semesters, a new

approach being taken to advance

students through the skill levels of

ESL faster. Dr. Ed Feighny, formerly

The Customs management Advisory

Board met with Professor David Wid-

dowson, on September 9th to dis-

cuss steps to improve the program.

Proposals made include making

specific course credit transferable

to Qatar University should students

wish to transfer in the future and the

creation of a separate building for fu-

ture training. A total of 77 students

are currently enrolled in the Customs

management program for the Fall

2013 term.

Olaimat to come to CCQ as CCES’s

Regional Manager for the Middle

East. Professor Olaimat was the first

Jordanian to graduate from the Uni-

versity’s Custom program and holds

a Master’s Degree in International

Customs Law and Administration.

He has more than 20 years of experi-

ence in customs related matters hav-

ing worked for the Customs Depart-

ment in Amman, Jordon as well as a

number of American installations in

the country.

Professor Olaimat will be teaming

Directorate of Customs Manage-

Qatar established its first Associate

Degree in Applied Science dedicated

to the proper instruction and training

for the English language and cus-

toms management. Representatives

of CCQ’s Administration traveled

to the University of Canberra (UC),

Australia to meet with delegates of

Canberra’s Center for Customs and

Excise Studies (CCES) to formulate a

customs program.

ues to evolve, so must professionals

who wish to continue developing their

skills and achieve new ranks among

their peers. Computers weren’t al-

ways necessary in the academic field

before, but as decades pass and new

technological advances came, hu-

manity as a whole must decide how

to change with it or risk being left in

the dark ages.

PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT

The Centre for Customs and Excise Studies (CCES) at the University of Canberra is looking forward to forging close ties with Qatar through the introduction of the new Associate of

Applied Science degree in Customs Management.

CCQ Launches First Workforce Program

CCES has partnered with a number

of educational institutions around the

world to jointly develop and deliver

programs that meet the requirements

of the World Customs Organiza-

tion. And while several countries in

the MENA region have been seeking

to introduce these specialised pro-

grams, Qatar is the first to make it

happen.

When our discussions first started,

CCES was not familiar with CCQ, and

CCQ was unaware of us. I can now

say with confidence that we are ex-

tremely happy to be partnering with

an educational institution that prides

itself on setting and maintaining such

high academic standards. Indeed,

the high regard in which CCQ is held

internationally and the quality of its

educational programs and faculty

made our decision to partner with

CCQ an easy one.

The introduction of this specialised

degree program is significant as it

recognises the crucial role played by

Customs in the economic develop-

ment of Qatar. The need to achieve

and maintain high professional stand-

ards throughout the Customs Depart-

ment is critical to the success of the

State of Qatar’s rapid growth in the

international marketplace. Customs

not only ensures compliance with the

country’s regulatory requirements but

also plays an important part in the fa-

cilitation of trade and travel.

We are therefore delighted to be

working with CCQ and the General

Directorate of Customs on this excit-

ing initiative. We are also conscious

of the important role which the pro-

gram plays in achieving the Qatar Na-

tional Vision 2030 by building the ca-

pacity of Qatar Customs in a way that

will ensure the efficient and transpar-

ent delivery of public services and

create a vibrant climate for overseas

investment.

أسبوعيا وفق آدائهم.

الرئيس المال، محمد الدكتور وصرح أن “نعتقد قابكو: لشركة التنفيذي جذب في أساسيا جزءا يشكل التدريب المواهب. ويهدف برنامج تدريب الطالب الكفاءات ذوي المرشحين جذب الى

On Sunday, September 15th, 2013 history was made and the new Qatar National Ice Hockey Team (Qatar Oryx) took to the ice for its first official game in the QIIHL (Qatar International Ice Hockey League).

Qatar has recently been accepted

into the IIHF (International Ice Hockey

Federation) and in order to keep their

status they need to meet strict regula-

tions. The Qatar Olympic Committee

along with the QIIHL are making this

happen.

The Qatar Oryx (Qatar’s National Ice

Hockey Team) opened the scoring

to make it 1-0. The CNA-Q Breakers

then scored 2 goals and led 2-1 going

into the final period. The Oryx thought

they had tied it up with 10 minutes left

to go in the game but the goal was

disallowed after it was deemed by

the referee that the whistle had gone

before the puck crossed the goal line.

Then, in the final 3 minutes of the

game, the Oryx tied it up at 2 all. It

was a spirited affair with each team

walking away with 1 point.

As part of a joint Memorandum of

Understanding (MoU) between Qatar

Petrochemical Company (QAPCO)

and the Community College Qatar

(CCQ), a new career-focused intern-

ship program was recently launched

for nine of the CCQ students that

graduated this May 2013. The pro-

gram will connect the students with

subject matter experts from QAPCO

and enable the students to experi-

ence working in a range of different

occupations.

The program consisted of a rotational

schedule whereby all the students

spent quality time in each Support

Department with the objective of dis-

covering the roles and responsibilities

of each Department as well has how

these activities fit into the QAPCO

organization. The students were also

assigned job tasks and were evaluat-

ed each week on how they performed.

Dr. Mohamed Al Mulla, QAPCO’s VC

& CEO stated “We believe that intern-

ships are an essential part of talent

attraction. Our Student Internship

Program aims to attract high caliber

candidates to work in the Industry. It

is a program for highly-motivated stu-

dents to gain real life working experi-

ence and to get a taste of our working

culture. We hope that all the students

from CCQ will benefit from the diver-

sity of opportunities they have ex-

perienced at QAPCO and hope that

some, if not all will think about joining

the company on our excellent Schol-

arship program.”

Dr Ibrahim Al-Naimi, President of

CCQ thanked Dr. Al Mulla and QAP-

CO for establishing this Internship

and for hosting our graduates, “This

program will engage our students in

a new way, and provide them with

real opportunities for practical job

experience. This program will also

prepare our students for further

study or for a career in Industry. I am

pleased to see this program in ac-

tion and proud of the collaboration

between CCQ & QAPCO.” He said.

Maryam Khalfan Al Bulushi and Al-

reem Ahmad Al Menhali described

the Internship as “A wonderful profes-

and work in general. I enjoyed the in-

teraction with the QAPCO family and

am very thankful for this opportunity

and their time.” When asked if she

would recommend this internship

to future students, Alreem replied,

“Yes, definitely! I had a great time and

learned a lot from this experience. It

has also helped me with my studies

as I am now familiar with how a large

organization such as QAPCO works.”

pated in the program were Sara Al

Al Haddad, Eiman Mohammed Hus-

sain, Muna Jaber Al Meraizeq, Noora

Rashid Sultan Al Mazruei and Mo-

hamed Ahmed Al Bulushi. At the end

of the program all the students will

receive a Certificate of Achievement

at a special ceremony to be held at

the new 5 star QAPCO Sports and

Health Club that was recently opened

in Messaied.

Plastic is that wonderful substance

utilized to manufacture so many items

and objects, such as water bottles,

toothbrushes, credit cards, phones,

computers, chairs, tables, food pack-

aging, fridges, cars (especially car

equipment such as airbags, seats or

boards), toys, airplanes, space rock-

ets, agriculture equipment, electri-

cal appliances, satellites, clothes,

nylon stockings, wires, water pipes,

electricity or telephones wires in-

side buildings, waste bags, plastic

bags, rubber, disposable plates and

cups for barbecues or even chewing

gums…those are some of the millions

items that contain plastics.

Plastic is indispensable. Plastic is

everywhere. Plastic can come in any

shape, color or size. Plastic can be

molded and remolded over and over

again. Plastic is a magical substance.

The features of plastic are infinite.

Plastic is strong, flexible, transparent

or mat, it can be colored, light weight-

ed, resistant to weather and rust and

can even resist flames, it doesn’t re-

quire a lot of maintenance. Plastic is

recyclable. At the same time, plastic

is not expensive.

But what is the source of plastic?

Plastic is mainly made from crude oil

or natural gas. Man-made plastic is

called synthetic plastic.

Petrochemical companies are spe-

cialized in the transformation of

natural resources into plastics. Many

petrochemical companies have spe-

cialized laboratories and dedicated

scientists who are working on perma-

nently developing plastic production.

Petrochemical companies are invest-

ing in research and development to

constantly improve the production of

plastic and its features to meet the

potential careers within QAPCO.

QAPCO places a strong emphasis

on the health and well-being of its

employees. QAPCO launched on the

National Sports Day its new sport and

recreational club, one of the largest

in the region. The QAPCO Club was

build to encourage regular physical

activity amongst its employees, fea-

turing 2 Olympic sized pools, a foot-

ball field, two modern fitness centers,

a bowling arena, an indoor multi-pur-

pose hall, tennis and basketball fields

amongst many other features.

Is plastic environmental friendly?

What happens to plastic waste?

Plastics contribute to the preserva-

tion of the environment in many dif-

ferent ways.

For instance, plastics have helped

reduce the average weight of cars by

200kg, thereby economizing 500 liters

of petrol for every 100,000km driven.

If plastics in packaging were replaced

by traditional materials, world energy

consumption would double.

Plastic can be incinerated or recycled.

For instance, plastic bottles can be

recycled to produce new plastic bot-

tles or other products.

As an example, a winter jacket can be

produced out of 35 water bottles.

holding some of the world’s largest

gas reserves, one of the key elements

to produce plastic, and more specifi-

cally polyethylene, identified plastic

production as a strategic industry

Hence, almost 40 years ago, the State

of Qatar established a national com-

A new HR Time and Attendance system has been put into effect at CCQ.

Waste Not, Want Not

The Community College has instituted

new changes to its printing policies to

reduce the consumption of paper and

ink. This decision was made by CCQ’s

new Chief Operations Officer Mr. Ali

M Mubarak. “Together we can make

changes in our organization for a bet-

ter environment,” Mr. Mubarak stated

in a mass e-mail. From now on, the

large multi-purpose Bizhub Printers

located throughout campus will only

print in black ink and documents with

multiple pages will be printed front to

back when given printing orders from

student-used computers. The Bizhub

printers, produced by Konica Minolta,

are a common sight in the Learn-

ing Centers, Libraries, and hallways

of CCQ and each has been set to a

default color of black. Such changes

should prove to reduce the amount of

ink and paper wasted as well as dimin-

ish the costs of replacing expensive

toner cartridges. Alfreda Haggard, the

dedicated Science Lab Coordinator of

CCQ is a key figure in advocating for

the reduction of waste at the college.

Speech” and “Lincoln.” Both screen-

ings were well received by attending

students, faculty and staff.

New Technology To Replace Old Ways

When initiated, employees will have

print terminals to register each time

they come to work as part of a new

attendance tracking program.

Fingerprint recognition panels are vis-

ible on the ground and second floor of

C-Ring. ACTAtek, advertising simple

solutions to security, regulation, and

compliance needs, is an American

company with over ten years of ex-

perience in biometric and card based

physical access solutions. Now in its

third generation, these Actatek units

are built on field-tested platforms of

former generations while incorporat-

ing the latest advancements in bio-

metric scanners, card assessment,

and network appliance technologies.

Each connects to a simple web-based

administration console, which records

when an employee signs in and out.

Over the last year, CCQ has taken steps to improve the conservation of its resources, including the use of paper recycling bins and enact-ing new policies regarding used books.

How To Make Friends

you go to school. You’ll be able to

identify what you and the people who

joined the club have in common. But,

you still won`t make friends if you

don’t actually talk to people.

If you and your friend agree to meet

somewhere, don`t be late. Be reliable

and don’t stand them up. If you are

not going to make it on time or make

it at all, call them as soon as you real-

ize it. Don`t make them wait for you

unexpectedly; it`s rude, and it is not a

good way to build friendship. When

you say you`ll do something, do it.

Be someone that people know they

can count on.

Being a good listener may be the

most important step. First, listen to

what people say. Next, remember

important details about them like

Friends play an important role in life.

They are there to comfort, laugh and

help you to make it through the day.

Wherever I go, there must be at least

one friend I’m good with to go with

me. Friends are always around, but

to make good friends, you should

spend more time mingling with

strangers, being reliable and learning

to listen.

If you want to make friends, you first

need to put yourself out there some-

how in order to meet people. Volun-

teering is a great way to get to know

new people. By working together you

can create a friendship. You might

meet others who have a passion for

changing and improving things that

you used to do. You can join clubs,

their names, their likes and dislikes.

After that, ask questions about their

interests and just take the time to

learn more about them. The ability to

keep secrets is the key to be a good

confidante. It`s no secret that you

shouldn`t tell other people things that

were told to you in confidence.

Making a friendship is the most won-

derful thing that anyone can do. Ide-

ally a friend is first a stranger who

offers love and respect, and will

never leave you. People love to be

around others who make them laugh,

so keep your conversation light and

happy and a friendship will blossom.

You have to be reliably there for them

when they need you. Always listen

and they will always listen to you

when you feel upset. This relation-

ship is the most important connec-

tion a person could have ever.

The greatness of a country and its

progress can sometimes be meas-

ured by what concrete achievements

exist from the ground up. Character-

ized by the sincerity of its leaders,

stability of its economy and prosper-

ity for the future, Qatar’s greatness is

also visible in its development. Urban

Evolution in Qatar is increasing day

after day.

The construction boom taking place

in Qatar is something we have all

bared witness to, and calls for pride

in what Qatar has reached at all lev-

els. Witnessing Qatar renaissance

real estate and construction boom

feels unprecedented. This renais-

sance came abreast of the growth

and prosperity experienced by the

Qatari economy over the past few

years that has made him it one of

the fastest growing economies in the

world. Despite the high price of land

and real estate in different regions

and cities of Qatar in recent years, it

could be considered the best prices

of all Gulf countries.

The Historic achievement made by

Qatar to win to host the 2022 World

Cup is a stunning turnaround in

the regional and global scene. This

means the World Cup is not just a

sporting event, but goes beyond

that to all sectors of the country so it

represents a major turning point and

pushes all sectors of the economy

towards a new orbit.

One example, Qatar hopes to be a

tourist state important for all tourists

from Arab and foreign. Now that Qa-

tar has completed about 50 high-rise

towers, we hope that it will continue

this great development.

تقاس ان يمكن وتطوره بلدنا عظمة أحيانا باالنجازات المحققة من األلف الى الياء. نرى عظمة قطر، المميزة باخالص ازدهار اقتصادها، استقرار في قادتها، مستقبلها وتطورها أيضا. التطور المدني

في قطر يزداد يوما بعد يوم.

العمرانية النهضة على كلنا شهدنا الحاصلة في قطر، ما يدعونا الى االفتخار

بما وصلت اليه على المستويات كافة.والبناء العقارات نهضة من نشهده ما

يبدو غير مسبوق.

ترافقت هذه النهضة مع نمو وازدهار خالل القطري االقتصاد شهدهما جعله من ما الماضية، القليلة السنوات

وعلى الرغم من ارتفاع أسعار األراضي ومدن مناطق مختلف في والعقارات قطر في السنوات األخيرة، اال انها تعتبر
