Coyhaique es el nuevo destino de la Patago-nia chilena y, por eso, la mejor opción para sus próximas vacaciones o escapada de fin de sema-na. To help orient visitors, The Coyhaique Chamber of Tourism has compiled this magazine, which contains all the information you could wish for to help you enjoy the many exciting activities in and around our city. Con alrededor de 108 mil habitantes, Coyhaique no solo es la capital regional de Aysén, sino también el princi-pal centro de operaciones para explorar los atractivos de la Carretera Austral, una de los rutas escénicas más famosas del mundo. Destino de montañas, aventuras y naturaleza salvaje, desde aquí se puede ir hacia el límite norte de la región, donde está el pueblo de La Junta, y seguir incluso más allá, hasta Caleta Gonzalo. O bien, partir hacia el extremo sur, donde está la localidad de Villa O’Higgins, el último punto de la carretera y uno de los lugares más remotos de Chile. Entremedio, la idea siempre es ir conociendo varios de los rincones naturales más espectaculares de la Patagonia.

En Coyhaique mismo, a solo 5 kilómetros del centro, se encuentra la Reserva Nacional Coyhaique. Con 2150 hec-táreas de superficie, destaca por sus exuberantes bosques

With around 108,000 inhabitants, Coyhaique isn’t just the capital of Chile’s Aysén Region, but it is also the main base of operations for tourists looking to explore the Southern Highway, one of the world’s most famous scenic drives. With its mountains, adventures and wild nature, the southern highway can take you up to the re-gion’s northern frontier and the town of La Junta, or even further, to Caleta Gonzalo. Conversely, you can head south, to Villa O'Hig-gins, the last outpost on the highway, and one of Chile’s most remote settlements. In between, the idea is simply to drive and discover the many natural wonders that Patagonia has to offer.

In Coyhaique itself, just 5km from the centre, you can find the Coyhaique National Reserve. It covers 2,150 hectares, and is known for its lush forests of lenga, coigüe and ñirre trees. You can explore by car or on foot. One of the highlights is the Green Lagoon, a deep pool surrounded by forest which has a 20 minute trail around it that is apt for hikers of all abilities. There are covered picnic areas

Uno de los hitos es la laguna Verde, un ojo de agua rodeado de bosques que tiene un sencillo sendero inclusivo de 20 minutos, el que puede ser recorrido por personas con capacidades diferentes. Hay quinchos cubiertos de madera con fogón y mesa para hacer picnic. También existen otros senderos más largos, que duran hasta 7 horas.

Otra escala esencial es la Reserva Nacional Río Simp-son, que está en el camino entre Coyhaique y Puerto Aysén. Mientras se viaja en auto se puede conocer cas-cadas como La Virgen y El Velo de la Novia (que están junto a la carretera), y una vez en la entrada misma de la reserva existe un didáctico centro informativo donde se enseña sobre la historia, flora y fauna de la región. Tam-bién hay un sendero llamado Del Pescador, que puede recorrerse en una hora.

El valle del río Simpson, que atraviesa la ciudad, se pue-de explorar tanto en vehículo como en bicicleta, siendo uno de los trayectos más destacados el que va hacia el lago Atravesado, pasando por el sector de Seis Lagunas.

Another unmissable stop off is the Río Simpson National Reserve, which lies along the road from Coyhaique to Puerto Aysén. On the drive there, you can see the beautiful La Virgen and El Velo de la Novia waterfalls (right by the road). Once you reach the reserve, you can head to the educational information centre and learn about the region’s history, flora and fauna. There is also a trail called Del Pescador, which you can complete in around an hour.

The Simpson River Valley, which runs through the city, can be explored either by car or by bike, and one of the most popular trips is out towards Atravesado Lake, through the Seis Lagunas area. It’s a scenic route, over dirt tracks, which will always surprise visitors with its natural and bucolic beauty.

Besides, in and around Coyhaique you can visit the popular “es-tancia” ranches. For example, in the area known as Coyhaique Alto, near the border with Argentina, you can find the Punta del Monte Ranch (puntadelmonte.cl), where you can carry out activities such as condor spotting, ranch work ( farming and cattle herding), horse riding and fly-fishing trips, among other things.

Adventure sport lovers will also have plenty to choose from. Heading south from Coyhaique over the crossing to Lake Frío, you can find the El Fraile ski resort (skielfraile.com). The centre stands at 1,600 metres above sea level, and is small, with a family-friendly atmos-phere. The snow is great here and prices are accessible. There are two different kinds of lift and pistes for all levels, as well as a snow park with ramps and rails, ski hire and a café.

Back in the city, you can also undertake a number of outdoor ac-tivities if you plan properly. Among the most popular are the multi-disciplinary races Aysén Run (aysenrun.com) and Desafío Aysén, which take place at different times of the year. Competitors come from all around Chile and the world to take part.

Outside the city there are some of the region’s most famous natural des-tinations, which can make for great day trips. One of these is just 67km to the south: the Cerro Castillo National Reserve, located at the foot of the imposing eponymous mountain, which has one of the wildest and most spectacular trekking trails in the region. It's a two or three night trail that takes you from the Las Horquetas area to the Cerro Castillo Lagoon and back to the town of Cerro Castillo itself, passing through lush forests, by glaciers and pristine rivers. You can also visit the park for the day, heading to the lagoon on horseback from Villa Cerro Castillo.

Heading further south, some 225km from Coyhaique, you can get to Puerto Río Tranquilo, a town from which you can visit the famous Marble Cathedral pillars by boat. These impressive geo-logical formations seem to float on the lake's turquoise waters, and

Los amantes de los deportes aventura también encuen-tran múltiples opciones. Saliendo de Coyhaique hacia el sur y tomando el cruce hacia el lago Frío, se llega al Cen-tro de Esquí El Fraile (skielfraile.com). Situado a 1.600 metros de altura, se trata de un pequeño centro de am-biente familiar, con excelente calidad de nieve en invier-no y precios accesibles. Cuenta con dos medios de eleva-ción, pistas para todos los niveles, snowpark con rampas y barandas, arriendo de equipos y servicio de cafetería.

En la ciudad también se realiza una serie de eventos out-door para los que conviene programarse. Entre los más im-portantes están las carreras de aventura multidisciplinaria Aysén Run (aysenrun.com) y Desafío Aysén, en distintas épocas del año, y en las cuales compiten deportistas y afi-cionados de todas partes de Chile y el extranjero.

have caves cut into the marble that are breath-taking in the sunlight. Trips can be taken from the main pier (1 hour and 45 minutes on the water), or from Puerto Mármol, 5km further south (30 minutes on the water). From Río Tranquilo you can also head out to the Exploradores glacier, a tongue of ice flowing out of the Northern Ice Field. Surrounded by forests, and with a great view of Mount San Valentín (4,059 m.a.s.l. – the highest in Patagonia), the trail to the glacier is among the most beautiful in Chile. You have to cross a number of bridges before you reach the lookout point. There are also trails out over the ice, which must be taken with a certified guide.

Another iconic trip you can take from Coyhaique is out to the La-guna San Rafael National Park. The most common way of getting there is from Puerto Chacabuco, situated some 75km from the re-gion’s capital. From there, several different boats can take you out to the ice floes and the San Rafael glacier. The boat trip lasts around 3 hours and the whole trip will take a day. You can also try taking a smaller boat or a dinghy. There are companies that can take you to the San Rafael glacier from Puerto Río Tranquilo too.

Finally, 170km to the north of Coyhaique, you can find the Queulat National Park, in the midst of a lush green forest, which is famous for its hanging glacier. The park has camping areas and three trails up to the hanging glacier itself: Mirador (200 metres), La Morrena (3.2 kilometres) and Laguna Témpanos (600 metres). The last of these can be completed in 40 minutes there and back, and takes you through a forest of giant nalca plants up to a lake overlooking the glacier. There are also boat and kayak trips to get you closer to the glacier.

En las afueras de la ciudad se encuentran los destinos de naturaleza más famosos de la región, que pueden cono-cerse por el día. Uno de ellos está a solo 67 kilómetros hacia el sur: la Reserva Nacional Cerro Castillo, ubica-da a los pies de la imponente montaña que le da el nom-bre y que cuenta con uno los senderos de trekking más salvajes y espectaculares de la región. Se trata de una ruta de dos a tres noches que va desde el sector de Las Horquetas hasta la laguna Cerro Castillo y que luego baja hacia la villa homónima, pasando por exuberantes bosques, glaciares y ríos de aguas transparentes. Tam-bién se puede ir por el día y a caballo desde Villa Cerro Castillo hasta la laguna.

Siguiendo hacia el sur, exactamente a 225 kilómetros de Coyhaique, se llega hasta Puerto Río Tranquilo, lo-calidad desde donde parten las navegaciones en lancha hacia las Capillas de Mármol del lago General Carrera, impresionantes formaciones geológicas que parecen flo-tar sobre las aguas turquesa del lago, con cavernas hechas de este material que resplandecen con la luz del sol. Las salidas pueden ser desde el muelle principal (1 hora y 45 minutos de navegación) o desde Bahía Mansa, 5 kilóme-tros más al sur (30 minutos de navegación). Desde Puerto Río Tranquilo también parten las excursiones hacia el Glaciar Exploradores, una lengua de hielo que se des-prende de Campos de Hielo Norte. Rodeado de bosques

y con vistas al monte San Valentín (4.059), el más alto de la Patagonia, el camino hasta el glaciar es uno de los más lindos de Chile. Hay que pasar varios puentes hasta llegar al mirador. También se realizan caminatas sobre el hielo, que deben hacerse con guías certificados.

Otra excursión emblemática para hacer por el día desde Coyhaique es ir hacia el Parque Nacional Laguna San Ra-fael. La ruta más común parte desde Puerto Chacabuco, situada a 75 kilómetros de la capital regional. Desde allí salen distintas embarcaciones que conducen hasta los tém-panos de hielo y el ventisquero San Rafael. La navegación dura alrededor de tres horas, y el paseo completo todo el día. En el lugar se realizan acercamientos en botes más pe-queños y botes zodiacs. También hay empresas que llevan al glaciar San Rafael desde Puerto Río Tranquilo.

Finalmente, 170 kilómetros al norte de Coyhaique se encuentra el Parque Nacional Queulat, en medio de exu-berante y verde vegetación, y famoso por su ventisquero colgante. El parque cuenta con zonas de camping y tres senderos para conocer el ventisquero colgante: Mirador (200 metros), Sendero sobre la Morrena (3,2 kilómetros) y Laguna Témpanos (600 metros). Este último se hace en 40 minutos ida y vuelta, pasando por un bosque de nalcas gigantes hasta llegar a la laguna con gran vista al glaciar. También se hacen paseos en bote y excursiones en kayak para aproximarse.

El sabor de la PatagoniaThe Taste of Patagonia

Con más de cien mil kilómetros cua-drados de superficie, la Región de Ay-sén es una de las más grandes de Chile. Por lo mismo, no es de extrañar que posea una gran biodiversidad, sobre todo en materia de productos gastro-nómicos. Por ejemplo, aquí crecen decenas de hongos silvestres comes-tibles –como las preciadas morillas–, truchas, salmones, salicornias –tam-bién conocidas como “espárragos de mar”–; además de carnes de caza y variadas frutas –como el calafate– y, cada día, más hortalizas. Por supues-to, esta es también tierra de corderos de excelente calidad, de los que no solo se aprovecha su carne, sino tam-bién que se producen deliciosos que-sos gourmet con su leche.Esa diversidad es lo que se puede en-contrar en gran parte de los restoranes de la zona, sobre todo en Coyhaique: el nuevo polo gastronómico de la Pa-tagonia. Uno de los comedores más destacados es Dalí, que ofrece una cocina de autor que cambia día a día y está ciento por ciento enfocado en

productos de la zona, como puyes y la-pas. La misma senda sigue el restorán Ruibarbo, que –además de ofrecer un sabroso pisco sour de calafate– elabo-ra preparaciones como el risotto con lenguas de cordero o su famosa merlu-za austral con pastelera de choclo.

Con una cocina de aires más rela-jados, el restorán Adobe incluye op-ciones como tapas, hamburguesas y sándwiches gourmet elaborados con ingredientes patagónicos. En la mis-ma línea, otra buena opción es Fogón Patagón, que –con carnes a las bra-sas– es el lugar indicado para pedir un cordero al palo.

Las cervezas de la zona también han ganado buena fama en el último tiempo. ¿La razón? La calidad del agua con las que son elaboradas es excelente, pues son aguas puras y de muy baja mineralidad. Así, lo ideal es probarlas en alguna de las cerve-cerías locales. Una de las más popu-lares es Arisca, que además de ofre-cer tres frescas variedades de cerveza de elaboración propia, cuenta con

With over one hundred thousand square kilo-metres of surface area, Chile’s Aysén Region is the country’s largest. It isn’t strange, then, to see that it enjoys an abundance of biodiver-sity, especially in terms of the produce used in cooking. For example, dozens of species of edible wild mushrooms grow here –such as the prized morillas-, and there are salmon, trout, salicornia -also known as "the asparagus of the sea"-, game meats and a host of wild fruits -such as the calafate-, as well as an ever-growing variety of vegetables. Of course, this is also a region of top-quality lamb, reared not only for their meat, but also for delicious gourmet cheeses made from their milk.

This diversity is present at a great num-ber of the region’s restaurants, especially in Coyhaique: Patagonia’s newest culinary hot-spot. One of the best dining experiences here is Dalí, which serves up original dishes that change daily, and is 100% focused on using local produce including the tiny common gal-axias fish and limpets. Another restaurant, Ruibarbo, follows suit and –besides a tasty calafate pisco sour- serves up dishes such as lamb’s tongue risotto or the famous southern hake with creamed corn.

Otro lugar imperdible es Casa Tropera, donde se la juegan por la imbatible dupla de hamburguesas y ocho tipos de cervezas artesanales; al igual que La Taberna de Charlie, de los mismos dueños de la premiada Cervecería D’olbek, donde ofrecen sus originales cervezas –como la de maqui– acompañadas de sánguches y crudos caseros. El Bar Hudson es otro de los que se especializa en cervezas artesanales, claro que en cuanto a comidas destaca por sus

preparaciones al librillo. Finalmen-te, no se puede dejar de destacar el Barground, especialista en originales cócteles y, claro, cervezas locales.

Por último, la nota dulce en Co-yhaique se puede encontrar en luga-res como el Café de Mayo, un aco-gedor local que cuenta con excelente pastelería y opciones para el desayu-no o la hora del té; o en la Cafete-ría Confluencia, donde además de encontrar delicias dulces, ofrecen buenas opciones para un sabroso al-muerzo con aires locales.

For a more relaxed atmosphere, try the Adobe restaurant, which has tapas, ham-burgers and gourmet sandwiches made with all-Patagonian ingredients. Another similar option is the Fogón Patagón, which –with freshly-barbecued meats- is the best place to go for a traditional spit roast lamb.

The regional beers have also been making a name for themselves recently. Why? The quality of the water they are made with is un-surpassable: it’s pure as can be and has very few minerals. The best place to try a beer is at one of the local breweries. One of the most popular is Arisca, which besides three different

and fresh varieties of the house beer, has a very good hot sandwich menu. Another unmissa-ble spot is Casa Tropera, where they serve up the tried and tested combo of hamburgers and eight varieties of craft beer; as is the case in La Caberna de Charlie, where they serve their own house beers -including a maqui berry beer- alongside hot sandwiches and home-made steak tartar. Bar Hudson is another establishment that specialises in craft beers, which can wash down the unique dishes they serve there. Finally, no trip would be complete without a visit to Barground, a specialist in cocktails and, of course, local beers.

For a sweet treat in Coyhaique, try the Café de Mayo: a cosy little place with great cakes and options for breakfast and after-noon tea. Or there’s Cafetería Confluencia, where besides delicious sweet treats, you can enjoy a tasty local-themed lunch.

Paraíso de la pescaA Fisherman’s Paradise

La región de Aysén es uno de los paraí-sos mundiales de la pesca con mosca o flyfishing. Esto pues no solo está colmada de ríos, esteros, arroyos, lagos y lagunas de aguas prístinas –donde abundan las truchas y salmones–, sino porque se tra-ta de sitios puros y vírgenes, enclavados entre imponentes cumbres nevadas y exuberantes bosques, donde es muy difí-cil encontrase con otros pescadores. Una experiencia salvaje única, que explica por qué pescadores de todo el mundo vienen a lanzar sus anzuelos, de sol a sol, en este privilegiado rincón de la Patagonia.

La temporada de pesca en la región co-mienza el segundo viernes de octubre y dura hasta el primer domingo de mayo. La normativa chilena exige contar con una licencia de pesca recreativa, que en-trega el Servicio Nacional de Pesca, Ser-napesca (sernapesca.cl ), tras solicitud pre-via con un sencillo trámite (ver recuadro “VENTA DE LICENCIAS”).

Los escenarios son múltiples y presentan condiciones para todos los niveles de pesca. Chile’s Aysén Region is one of the world’s most coveted fly-fishing hotspots. Not only is it criss-crossed in pristine rivers, streams, lakes and la-goons –where trout and salmon abound-, but it is also a pure, virgin territory of imposing snowy peaks and deep, lush forests, where it is actually difficult to bump into other fishermen. Fishing in Aysén is a wild and unique experience, and at-tracts fishermen from the world over who happily cast their lines from sunrise to sunset in this quiet corner of Patagonia. The fishing season in Aysén begins on the second Friday of October and runs until the first Sun-day in May. Chilean regulations stipulate that you must have a valid recreational fishing license from the National Fisheries Service, Sernapesca (sernapesca.cl), which you can simply pre-order online (see textbox “SALE OF LICENSES”). There are a tremendous number of fishing spots and conditions to suit all levels of fisherman. In and around Coyhaique you can find a great many excel-lent spots to start out, such as the Simpson River, which runs through the city, or the nearby Aysén and Mañihuales Rivers. You can take a day trip from Coyhaique to Atravesado Lake, which is great for dinghy or float tube fishing, and you can then carry on up to the Seis Lagunas area near Elizal-de Lake, another perfect casting spot. Nearby, you can also find the wild Paloma and Monreal Lakes and, towards the mountains, Lakes Polux, Frío and Castor.

Another great fishing area is the Ñireguao pampa, some 70km north of Coyhaique, which is home to the Emperador Guillermo River –perfect for be-ginners- and the Ñireguao River, home to brown trout, where dry fly-fishing is the order of the day. Further north, beyond the city limits, you'll find the Cisnes River and the Pichaco River Valley, one of the more difficult sites to access, but teeming with wildlife. A little further still, at the northern frontier of the region, near the town of La Junta, you can find Rosselot Lake and the Figueroa Riv-er. Heading south, on the other hand, you come across the legendary Baker River, the mightiest river in Chile, and the enormous General Carre-ra, Cochrane and Bertrand Lakes. Here you can see salmon leaping upstream amongst some of the most breath-taking landscape in all Patagonia.

Otro gran sector es la pampa de Ñire-guao, unos 70 kilómetros al norte de Co-yhaique, donde destaca el río Emperador Guillermo –perfecto para principiantes– o el propio río Ñireguao, donde reina la trucha marrón y la pesca se hace funda-mentalmente con mosca seca.

Hacia el norte, ya saliendo de la ciudad, se encuentra el río Cisnes y el valle del río Picacho, uno de los sitios con acceso más complicado, pero de exuberante natura-leza. Un poco más allá, en el límite norte de la región, cerca de la localidad de La Junta, están el lago Rosselot y el río Figue-roa. Y hacia el sur, en tanto, se encuentra el mítico río Baker, el más caudaloso de Chile, y los grandes lagos como el General Carrera, Cochrane y Bertrand; donde los salmones saltan en algunos de los paisajes más bellos de la Patagonia.

Debido a su particular geografía y ubicación en el mapa del país, la re-gión de Aysén ha podido conservar una de las identidades culturales más fuertes de Chile. Los ayseninos son fieles seguidores y promotores de sus tradiciones, típicas de la Patagonia, varias de ellas compartidas con sus vecinos argentinos. Así, tanto en el campo como en la ciudad, es común ver hombres usando boinas, pañuelos al cuello, botas y pierneras de cuero de chivo para montar a caballo: la vestimenta típica de los gauchos.

Lo mismo ocurre con otras costum-bres muy difundidas en la región, como decir “che” al final de las frases, beber vino en bota durante los asados de cordero al palo o beber mate caliente a cualquier hora del día, ya sea para compartir con amigos en el campo o en torno a una cocina a leña, que siem-pre permanece encendida dentro de las casas. El mate se suele pasar de un comensal a otro, rellenándose con agua

caliente tras cada turno, y debe beberse completo. El que dice “gracias” quiere decir que ya no quiere beber más. Tén-galo presente cuando le ofrezcan uno.

Además del mate, los ayseninos son aficionados al truco, un com-plejo juego de cartas con naipe español que se basa en técnicas de bluff para engañar a los contrincan-tes. Y también a bailar chamamé: música y baile folclórico infaltable en fiestas populares y eventos tradi-cionales de la región.

Para aprender más sobre la cultura de Aysén, hay diversos lugares que conviene tener en cuenta. Uno es el Centro Cultural Coyhaique (Eusebio Lillo 23, tel. +56/67 221 1596; cultu-racoyhaique.cl ), donde suelen exponer artistas locales –desde artesanos has-ta músicos–, y además de ciclos cine; y otros eventos culturales.

Otro sitio esencial es el Museo Es-cuela de Villa Cerro Castillo (mu-seoescuela-cerrocastillo.cl), ubicado en la

localidad del mismo nombre, unos 95 kilómetros al sur de Coyhaique. Este pequeño museo funciona en un edificio patrimonial y exhibe objetos y utensilios del pueblo te-huelche, los primeros habitantes de esta zona. De hecho, este lugar es el complemento perfecto para uno de los grandes hitos arqueológicos de la región: el Paredón de las Manos de Cerro Castillo. Este lugar se en-cuentra a 3,5 kilómetros de Villa Ce-rro Castillo, cruzando el río Ibáñez. Se trata de un alero rocoso donde existen pinturas rupestres con ma- nos trazadas por la cultura tehuelche.

Finalmente, otro importante hito cultural está en la localidad de Puer-to Ingeniero Ibáñez, a orillas del lago General Carrera. Allí, artesanos lo-cales elaboran cerámicas hechas con arcilla y forradas en cuero de chivo, decorado con figuras aonikenk. Una expresión típica más de la región de Aysén y fiel reflejo de su cultura.

Due to its unique geography and location, Chile's Aysén Region has managed to main-tain one of the strongest regional cultural iden-tities in Chile. People from Aysén (“aisen-inos” in Spanish) are staunch followers and protectors of their typical Patagonian tradi-tions, many of which are shared with their Argentine neighbours. From the countryside to the city, it is commonplace to see men wearing berets, neckerchiefs, boots and goatskin chaps for horseriding: typical “gaucho” clothing.

The same thing happens with other customs that are spread throughout the region, such as ending sentences with “che”, drinking wine from wineskins during a spit-roast lamb barbecue or drinking hot mate at all hours of the day. Mate is primarily a social beverage, drunk when chatting with friends in the fields or around a log stove, which are always lit inside Patagonian houses. The mate itself is often shared between friends, and refilled with hot water as it makes its way round the group until it is spent. If anyone should say “gra-cias”, it means they no longer want to drink. Be aware of that if you are offered some.

Besides mate, the locals are avid players of “truco”, a complicated card game played with a Spanish deck which is based on bluff-ing to trick other players. And they also dance a lot of “chamamé”: a folklore style of music and dance, which is a mainstay of parties and traditional events in the region.

To find out more about the culture of Aysén, there are a number of places you should con-sider visiting. One is the Coyhaique Cultur-al Centre (Eusebio Lillo 23, tel. +56/67 221 1596; culturacoyhaique.cl), where local artists are often on show –from craftsmen to musicians-, and there are film festivals and other cultural events. Another essential visit would be to the Villa

Cerro Castillo School Museum (museoescue-la-cerrocastillo.cl), located in Villa Cerro Castillo itself, some 95km from Coyhaique. This small museum works out of a national heritage building and exhibits objects and tools from the Tehuelche people, the region’s first inhabitants. In fact, the place is the per-fect accompaniment if you are looking to visit one of the region’s archaeological highlights: the Cliff of Hands at Cerro Castillo. The cliff can be found some 3.5km from Villa Cerro Castillo, crossing the Ibáñez River. It’s a rocky outcrop with many hand paint-ings made by the Tehuelche.

Finally, another important cultural land-mark can be found in the village of Puerto Ingeniero Ibáñez, on the shores of General Carrera Lake. Here, craftsmen work on ce-ramics made from clay and coated in goat-skin, all decorated with Aonikenk culture designs. It’s a traditional style throughout the Aysén region and perfectly reflects the culture.
