Prayer of the Week
Stewardship of Time & Talent
First Eucharist
When children receive the Body and Blood of Jesus in First Holy Communion for the first time we congratulate them and
their parents and teachers. They experience what we all believe about the presence of Jesus under the signs of bread and
wine: that the Lord is truly with us to be our very life.
It is no accident that food and drink are the primary symbols of the presence of Jesus in Christian worship. Without food and
drink we cannot survive. Without sharing the food and drink that is Eucharist we cannot live in Jesus. Actually, in our
celebration, the ultimate sign of peace is not the handshake of friendship but the sharing of communion—sharing at the table
of the Lord. Most parishes do fairly well at celebrating the communal nature of the liturgy until it comes to communion, then
it can tend to become a rather individual experience. It's not that receiving Eucharist should not be intensely personal. But, at
the same time, we need to be aware that the presence of the Lord must also include our brothers and sisters. We are sharing
from the one loaf and the one cup which is meant to make us one in Christ.
We congratulate those receiving Eucharist for the first time. As they begin to experience with us a new level of sharing in the
presence of Jesus, let's pray that all of us can allow our sharing in the banquet table of the Lord to help us discover new
ways to share our lives with others. Copyright © 2009 Resource Publications, Inc. All rights reserved.
Saint John of Capestrano
On October 23rd the Church celebrates the feast of St. John
of Capestrano. John was born at Capestrano, Italy in 1385.
He began a brilliant legal career in Naples, but was put in
prison for political reasons. This sad experience gave him
time in which to meditate, and in doing so, he decided to
enter the Friars Minors (Franciscans) in Perugia, which he
did in 1416. After his ordination he traveled throughout
Italy, Germany, Bohemia, Austria, Hungary, Poland, and
Russia preaching penance and establishing numerous
communities of Franciscan renewal. When Mohammed II
was threatening Vienna and Rome, St. John, at the age of
seventy, was commissioned by Pope Callistus III to preach
and lead a crusade against the invading Turks. Marching at
the head of seventy thousand Christians, he gained victory
in the great battle of Belgrade against the Turks in 1456.
Three months later, on October 23rd, he died at Illok,
Hungary. St. John of Capestrano was canonized in 1724
and is the patron of jurists.
Offertory for Oct. 8 - $15,496.99

Prayer at a Child's First Communion
Lord Jesus Christ, in the Sacrament of the Eucharist You
left us the outstanding manifestation of your limitless love
for us.
Thank You for giving our parish children the opportunity to
experience this love in receiving the Sacrament for the first
time. May your Eucharist presence keep them ever free
from sin, fortified in faith, pervaded by love for God and
neighbor, and fruitful in virtue, that he/she may continue to
receive You throughout life and attain final union with You
at death. Amen.
WITH SINCERE APPRECIATION
We want to thank all the volunteers who helped to clean St.
John church and those who provided refreshments for the
coffee break.

Understanding Three Beliefs
A Guide for Maine Catholics
On End of Life Decisions Wed., Nov. 8 3PM Notre Dame Hall
Suzanne Lafreniere, the director of the Office of Public
Policy for the Diocese of Portland, will discuss Three
Beliefs, a recently promulgated document from Bishop
Robert P. Deeley, at the Notre Dame Church Hall on Wed,
Nov. 8 at 3:00PM,
Three Beliefs is a guide for Maine Catholics that offers
valuable assistance and information regarding end-of-life
issues. The 20-page document, produced by the Diocese of
Portland, includes an explanation of Catholic teaching on
life-sustaining treatment and care, an introductory letter
from Bishop Deeley, the Maine Advance Directive form
modified to ensure consistency with both Catholic teaching
and Maine law, and a helpful FAQ section. Copies of
Three Beliefs will be available
at the workshop.
During her presentation,
Lafreniere will present the three
basic Catholic beliefs that are
the foundation for making
end-of-life care determinations
and answer questions from
attendees.

Thank you to everyone who helped make our 31st annual
Harvest Fair such a great success! We are very grateful to
all!
Although the Harvest Fair is in it's 31st year, Mount Merici
Academy has been educating area youth for 107 years in
the Ursuline tradition of teaching the whole child, mind,
body, and spirit. How did we start? In 1888, Father
Charland, pastor of St. Francis de Sales, asked the Ursuline
sisters in Trois Rivieres, Canada to come to Waterville to
educate area children, and they did. Mount Merici Academy
was founded later in 1911 and was named after Saint
Angela Merici, the foundress of the Ursulines. We are
forever grateful to the first group of Ursuline sisters who
had the courage to leave their home and move to
Waterville!
