Moros yCristianos /MOORS AND CHRISTIANS

Constituyen sin duda la manifestación festiva

más extendida, genuina y participativa de la Costa

Blanca. En ocasiones acompañan las fiestas mayo-

res y patronales un conjunto de festejos llenos de

colorido, movimiento, ritmo, músicas y disparos de

arcabuces, que conmemoran la ancestral y mítica

lucha entre las huestes musulmanas y cristianas. Un

primer día de entradas de comparsas de ambos ban-

dos, un segundo dedicado al patrón homenajeado y

un tercero de embajadas alternas solicitando rendi-

ciones mediante textos históricos recitados de alta

calidad literaria, a las que siguen alardes de dispa-

ros y la toma del castillo.

This type of festival involves the largest number

of participants and is undoubtedly the most common

and authentic celebration along the Costa Blanca.

As part of the main celebrations of the patron saint’s

feast day, a set of festivals laden with colour, move-

ment, rhythm, music and rounds fired from harque-

buses commemorate the age-old, mythical fight bet-

ween the Christians and the Moslem armies. The

first day is dedicated to the entrances of groups

from both sides. The second day is dedicated to the

patron saint and the third shows the ambassadors

from both sides requesting surrender by reciting his-

torical texts of great literary quality, which are then

followed by shooting and the taking of the castle.

En las faldas de la Sierra de Mariola,

Banyeres celebra por San Jorge sus Fiestas de

Moros y Cristianos, que destacan por la utiliza-

ción de su castillo almohade, denominado Tosal

del Águila, y por el cálido homenaje a los difun-

tos al terminar las fiestas anuales, visitando

ambas huestes el cementerio, para disparar allí

tantos trabucazos como seres queridos quieren

recordar.

On the foothills of Sierra de Mariola,

Banyeres holds its Moors and Christians festival

around the feast day of St. George. The celebra-

tions stand out thanks to the use of an Almohad

castle -called Tossal del Águila- and the warm

homage paid to the deceased, when the annual

fiestas are over, by a visit to the cemetery by

both armies to fire as many blunderbuss rounds

as loved ones they wish to remember.

The industrious shoemaking towns of Elda and

Petrer, in the mid-region of El Vinalopó; of

Cocentaina, a stately village from the time of the

Sicilian admiral Roger de Lauria, with its beautiful

ducal palace and churches; of Callosa d’En Sarrià,

which was home to the admiral Bernat de Sarrià,

with unique dances that pay homage to its

Moorish and Christian captains; and of Villena,

crowned by the frontier castle of Prince Juan

Manuel, with the mass participation of groups and

festeros, can boast of having magnificent Moors

and Christians festivals of Tourist Interest.

En honor a San Jorge, los alcoyanos celebran las más genuinas y vistosas Fiestas de

Moros y Cristianos de cuantas se realizan. Sus desfiles o “entradas”, los boatos de capita-

nes y alféreces, las embajadas de unos y otros solicitando rendiciones, el estruendo de los

alardes con continuos disparos de arcabuces y trabucos, la procesión solemne del Santo

Patrón acompañado de todos los participantes y su gloria final sobre las almenas del cas-

tillo figurado, configuran la tríada festiva de Alcoy.

In honour of St. George, the people from Alcoy celebrate the most authentic and

colourful Moors and Christians festival in Spain. The parades, or ‘entrances’, the shows by

the captains and officers, the ambassadors of both sides requesting surrender, the thun-

derclaps of the displays, with a continuous barrage of harquebuses and blunderbusses,

the solemn procession of the patron saint accompanied by all those taking part and their

final glory on the castle battlements make up the festival triad of Alcoy.

Los clásicos festejos de Moros y Cristianos, en honor de Santa Marta, adquieren en Villajoyosa ale-

grías, desenfados y gozos, sobresaliendo que en la amanecida del tercer día festero, el “Desembarco”

de las huestes moras traslada las luchas rituales de los bandos a las arenas de la playa del bello lugar

marinero y pescador.

In Villajoyosa, the classic Moors and Christians festivals, which are held in honour of Santa Marta,

are filled with joie de vivre and at dawn on the third day of the festival, they offer the landing of the

Moorish armies, which takes the ritual fighting between both sides to the sandy beaches of this beau-

tiful sailing and fishing village.

Fuego y Fiesta

En todas las Fiestas que se celebran en la Provincia de Alicante

hay un denominador común: el fuego. En sus diversas manifesta-

ciones el fuego constituye un atractivo festivo de primer orden.

Algunos ejemplos destacados los representan la Nit de L’Alba, en

Elche, cuando miles de cohetes en innumerables palmeras de gran

colorido, crean un amanecer en la ultima hora de la antevíspera de

la Asunción; el Castell de Foc de L’Olla de Altea, espectáculo de luz,

color, música y fuegos artificiales sobre el mar, de impresionante

belleza; el Concurso de fuegos de artificio en la Playa del Cocó de

Alicante, la semana siguiente a “Les Fogueres”. Pero también lo es

en las Fallas de Dénia, Elda y Benidorm o en las Hogueras de San

Vicente del Raspeig, así como en las diversas poblaciones que cele-

bran festejos en torno al fuego.

FIRE AND FIESTA

All the festivals held in the province of Alicante have

one common denominator: fire. In a variety of forms,

fire is one of the main festival attractions. Good exam-

ples of this are la Nit de L’Alba, in Elche, when thou-

sands of rockets create a palm-tree dawn in the sky on

the evening before the eve of the feast day of the

Assumption; the Castell de Foc de l’Olla in Altea, a beau-

tiful spectacle of light, colour, music and fireworks over

the sea; the fireworks Competition on Alicante's Playa

del Cocó beach in the week after Les Fogueres. But fire

is also an important part of the Fallas in Dénia, Elda and

Benidorm and it is present in the bonfires in San Vicente

el Raspeig, as well as in the different towns which cele-

brate festivities connected to fire.

In the middle of the summer solstice, the

light-filled city of Alicante undergoes a burst of

art, music, gunpowder, beauty, light and popu-

lar tradition. Around sculptured monuments of

wood and cardboard filled with colour, ninots

(the figures) and festive allusions to fashions

and trends, the barracas and racós flood the

streets for relaxation and enjoyment of the

people from the city and visitors until all is

devoured by fire on the magical night of la

Cremá. The city overflows with sensations, aro-

mas and colour, with flower offerings, beauty

parades, bands of music, noisy mascletás and a

week with firework display competition.

Semana Santa /HOLY WEEK

La celebración litúrgica de la Pascua celebrada en el interior de las igle-

sias católicas desborda el ámbito sacro en la Semana Santa, mediante la

realización de procesiones por las calles y plazas de innumerables localida-

des de la Costa Blanca. Diversas cofradías exponen al público devoto esce-

nas y figuras exentas representativas de la Pasión y Resurrección de Cristo,

creadas por prestigiosos escultores e imagineros de distintas épocas.

Desde el Viernes de Dolores al Domingo de Resurrección tales cortejos

sacros manifiestan y alientan la devoción del pueblo fiel que participa o con-

templa respetuosamente su paso.

The liturgical celebration of Easter inside the Catholic churches overflows

the religious side of Holy Week with processions through the streets and

squares of the endless array of towns and villages on the Costa Blanca. A

variety of brotherhoods exhibit, for the worshiping public, free-standing figu-

res and scenes representing the Passion and Resurrection of Christ, created

by famous sculptors and religious painters from different periods.

From Holy Friday to Resurrection Sunday, the religious parades represent

and encourage the devotion of the faithful, who take part in or respectfully

contemplate the scenes as they pass by.

meral declarado por la UNESCO Patrimonio Natural de la

Humanidad. Devoción sentida masivamente por los ilicitanos,

que se hace espectáculo admirable para quien lo contempla.

An immense ocean of white palms, some natural and

upright, and others artistically platted together, accompany

the morning procession representing the triumphant

entrance of Jesus into Jerusalem. The procession takes

place in the town of Elche in the middle of a grandiose palm

grove designated a natural World Heritage by the UNESCO.

The devotion is felt by all the locals and is a sight worthy of

the admiration of all onlookers.

La conmemoración de la Muerte y Resurrección de Jesús

adquiere en las procesiones de la Semana Santa crevillentina

inusitada riqueza y esplendor. A los pasos con imágenes de

renombrados escultores e imagineros, destacando las de

Mariano Benlliure, ricos y bellamente adornados, acompañan

numerosos coros de la localidad, entonando con justeza y

exquisito gusto un variado repertorio de música sacra de

pasión, clásica y tradicional.

The Holy Week processions of Crevillent commemorate the

death and resurrection of Jesus with unusual wealth and splen-

dour. The statues, made by renowned sculptors and religious

painters, in particular those by Mariano Benlliure, are richly and

beautifully decorated and are accompanied by a great number

of choirs from the village, which give an exquisite rendition of

a varied repertoire of traditional, classical and religious music

which is connected to the Passion of Christ.

En la bella y monumental ciudad de Orihuela, las proce-

siones de Semana Santa, con imágenes de Francisco Salzillo,

Nicolás de Bussi, Sánchez Lozano y otros, destacan por su

suntuosidad, extraordinario valor artístico, vigoroso espíritu

religioso y hasta por su curiosidad artística como en la ima-

gen del demonio hermafrodita denominado popularmente “La

Diablesa” en la Exaltación de la Cruz, único paso que no atra-

viesa la Iglesia catedralicia.

In the beautiful, monumental town of Orihuela, the Holy

Week processions, with statues by Francisco Salzillo, Nicolás de

Bussi, Sánchez Lozano and others stand out thanks to their

sumptuousness, their extraordinary artistic value, vigorous

religious spirit and even by their interesting artistic images,

such as the hermaphrodite devil, known locally as La Diablesa

(the she-devil) during the Exaltation of the Cross, which is the

only statue not to cross through the cathedral church.

Every year, and based on the ancient libretto

titled Corona Mortificada, the inhabitants of this

town represent fifteen scenes in verse on the

Passion, Death and Resurrection of Christ. The

popular flavour of the costumes, the expression and

movements of the locals who have been turned into

actors and actresses, and the devout expectation of

the people go hand in hand with the literary quality

of the texts.

Desde el otoño de la Edad Media, el pueblo de

Elche representa cada año en la Basílica de Santa

María la Muerte, Asunción y Coronación de Nuestra

Señora, su Patrona, mediante un drama sacro –

lírico, basado en los evangelios apócrifos del pri-

mer cristianismo, conservado y enriquecido a lo

largo de cinco siglos y de valor excepcional, dividi-

do en dos partes: La Víspera, hasta el fallecimien-

to, y La Festa, con la procesión del entierro por las

calles de la Ciudad y, por la tarde, la Asunción y

Coronación.

Since the latter stages of the Middle Ages, the

town of Elche has held every year a religious-lyri-

cal drama in the basilica of Santa María la Muerte,

Asunción y Coronación de Nuestra Señora, its

patron saint. The said drama is based on the

apocryphal gospels of early Christianity, and has

been conserved and enriched over five centuries

and is of exceptional value, and it is divided into

two parts: the eve of the death and La Festa, with

the procession of the burial through the town stre-

ets and, in the evening, the Assumption and

Coronation.

Carnavales /CARNIVAL

El Carnaval como tal es una celebración

donde las gentes disfrazan sus cuerpos y

enmascaran el rostro apareciendo como

otros, por pura diversión o por motivos

religiosos, sociales y de cualquier otra

índole. Surge en la Baja Edad Media, en

los días cercanos a la cuaresma, principal-

mente como forma de preparación ante las

prescripciones de ayunos, abstinencias y

moderaciones carnales impuestas durante

cuarenta días antes de Pascua, pero tam-

bién como crítica y hasta sátira hacia el

poder religioso y civil, los mayores, varo-

nes y ricos ostentosos.

Carnival as such is a celebration where

people disguise their bodies and place a

mask on their faces to look like someone

else, for pure enjoyment or for religious,

social or any other reason. The festival

appeared during the early Middle Ages,

during the days that were close to Lent,

mainly as a preparation for the fasting,

abstinence and carnal moderation in force

during the forty days prior to Easter.

However, it was also used to criticise and

satirise religious and civil authorities, as

well as the ostentations of the mayors,

barons and rich.

Romerias /PILGRIMAGES

Para los cristianos la vida es sólo camino. De aquí, la manifestación popu-

lar, entre lúdica y religiosa, de caminar al menos un día al año conjunta y soli-

dariamente hacia lugares de culto y devoción, ermitas y santuarios extramu-

ros de tantas localidades, en peregrinaciones multitudinarias, marcadas por

tradiciones, promesas y exvotos, sin que falten nunca representaciones fol-

clóricas y costumbres gastronómicas propias de cada lugar. Entre las muchas

que se celebran en la Costa Blanca, cabe destacar la de la Santa Faz de

Alicante, Santa Águeda en Catral, la del Pilar de Benejúzar, la de San Pascual

en Monforte del Cid o la de La Virgen de los Lirios en la Font Roja de Alcoy.

For Christians, life is a mere journey. This idea gave rise to the popular event,

which involves both enjoyment and religion, where at least one day a year, people

walk together to places of worship and devotion, shrines and sanctuaries outside the

walls of so many towns and villages, on mass pilgrimages marked by traditions,

promises and votive offerings and with displays of folklore and the gastronomy typi-

cal of each place. Out of the great number of pilgrimages in this province we can

highlight those of La Santa Faz de Alicante, Santa Águeda, in Catral, El Pilar de

Benejuzar, San Pascual, in Montforte, and La Virgen de los Lirios, in La Font Roja de

Alcoy

Porrates /Porrates

Porrate no es más que el nombre genérico de una feria de

golosinas, turrones y frutos secos, que se instala en calles y

plazas para acompañar diversas fiestas o acontecimientos,

como solaz de los más pequeños, adquisición de dulces para

las familias y regalo de mozos a sus pretendidas con la clási-

ca “pañolada”. Entre todos ellos el más famoso es el que

acompaña la festividad del abad San Antón, protector de ani-

males domésticos que se bendicen en su nombre y a cuya

intercesión se atribuía la preservación y hasta curación del

temido mal de fuego, antaño tan maligno.

Porrate is simply a generic name for a mini-market of sweets,

cakes, nougats and nuts installed in the streets and squares as

an accompaniment to various festivals or events, for the enjoy-

ment of children, the acquisition of family desserts and gifts from

the young men of the village to their girlfriends with the classic

pañolada. The most famous is the one that accompanies the

feast-day celebrations of the abbot St. Anthony, who protected

pets, which are blessed in his name, and who offered protection

from and even cured the much feared ergotism, which was so rife

at the time.

Bous al Carrer, Sueltade Vaquillas /Running of the Bulls

La utilización de vaquillas y el peligroso juego con

ellas, posiblemente parte del proceso de iniciación a la

edad adulta de los jóvenes, ha llegado a constituir un

elemento festivo primordial de muchas fiestas de dis-

tinto tipo y en diversos lugares. Es corriente correrlas

por las calles de los pueblos, sorteando sus embestidas,

como se hace en Ondara o Jávea.

The use of young bulls and the dangerous games

played with them, which is possibly a part of the ini-

tiation of young men into adulthood, has become a

basic element of a variety of festivals in different pla-

ces. They are frequently run through village streets,

with the men dodging their charges, such as in Ondara

or Jávea.

En Dénia, els Bous a la Mar (toros en el mar) se celebran en una

elíptica plaza junto al mar. La mitad con barreras de madera, la otra

abierta al muelle que lamen las olas, permite que los mozos jueguen

con éstas vaquillas sorteando sus embestidas y arrojándose al agua

cuando la bestia acosa, de modo que el mayor engaño consiste en

que el animal los siga en zambullidas refrescantes de ambos, para

empezar de nuevo en tierra el lúdico encuentro veraniego.

In Dénia, the festival of Els Bous a la Mar is held in an oval-sha-

ped square next to the sea. With half the square covered with woo-

den fences and the other half open to the dock which takes in the

lapping of the waves, the young boys of the village play with young

bulls by dodging their charges and jumping into the sea when there

is no other way of escape. The greatest trick is to get the bull to dive

into the cool water after them, for the summer’s bloodless meeting

between bull and man to start again once they get back to land.

Se dice que los primeros cristianos no acostumbraban a venerar el

crucifijo o cruz de madera con Cristo crucificado, sino sólo los made-

ros cruzados, adornándolos con piedras preciosas o cubriéndolos de

flores. Celebrando la fiesta religiosa de la Santa Cruz a primeros de

Mayo, mes de los árboles en sazón y de las flores, los pueblos cristia-

nos han mantenido la tradición de plantar en su plaza central un árbol

traído del bosque, los llamados “mayos” o de adornar sus casas, calles

y plazas con cruces florales, denominadas Cruces de Mayo, compitien-

do entre ellas en variedad, riqueza y gusto.

It is said that the early Christians did not use to worship the cruci-

fix or wooden cross portraying the crucified Christ, but simply crossed

pieces of wood, which they decorated with precious stones or flowers.

As the religious festival of the Holy Cross is held at the beginning of

May, the month of trees in bloom and flowers, Christian towns and

villages have upheld the tradition of planting in their central square, a

tree brought from the forest called mayo, decorating their homes,

streets and squares with a variety of richly coloured, elegant flower

crosses, known as the May crosses.

Las fiestas propician la cohesión social, soli-

daridad, intercambio y crean o mantienen la

identidad propia de cada lugar. Se les llama

tradicionales y hasta populares cuando su ori-

gen se remonta largo en el tiempo. Aún con

posible origen pagano, la mayoría han sido

cristianizadas otorgándoles que se celebren en

honor de diversas advocaciones de Cristo, la

Virgen María o cualquier santo o santa, consi-

derado por razones históricas o legendarias

protector del lugar y sus gentes, denominándo-

se entonces como patronales. Si, además o por

si mismas, son las centrales, propias y más

importantes del lugar reciben entonces la

denominación de mayores.

Fiestas lead to social cohesion, solidarity and

exchange, and create or maintain the identity of

each location. They are referred to as traditional

and even popular when their origin dates far

back in time. Even though they may have a

pagan origin, most have been Christianised and

are celebrated in honour of various dedications

of Christ, the Virgin Mary or the saints, conside-

red, for historical or legendary reasons, as the

protectors or protectresses of the town or villa-

ge and its people and consequently those festi-

vals are given the status of patron festivities. If

the festivals are the main and most important

celebrations held in the location, they are refe-

De todas las llamadas fiestas de invierno, cabe destacar en la población juguete-

ra de Ibi “els Enfarinats”, grupo de jóvenes que disfrazados de autoridades toman la

villa, imponiendo con gran humor sus propias reglas estrafalarias a viandantes y

comerciantes, luchando con sus opositores arrojándoles harina con la que terminan

todos embadurnados.

Of all the so-called winter fiestas, which run from November to February, such as

the Dances of the Moorish King in the town of Agost or those of the Viceroy in Ibi, the

celebration of Els Enfarinats, which takes place in the toy-making town of Ibi is worthy

of special mention. Els Enfarinats is a group of young men who, dressed up as rulers,

honor y como antigua fiesta de fertilidad, con las primeras espigas del mes de mayo,

en la localidad de Torremanzanas, las mozas del lugar, denominadas “llumeners”,

bellamente ataviadas llevan en sus cabezas, sobre un primoroso cojín, un pan de cua-

tro kilos colocado encima de una fuente de cerámica valenciana y cubierto de finos

velos y flores, que será bendecido en la Iglesia parroquial.

as an ancient festival of fertility, with the first ears of wheat of May, in the village of

Torremanzanas, the beautifully dressed young women, known as llumeners, place a

cushion on their heads and carry a four-kilo loaf of bread on a typical ceramic dish

covered with fine veils and flowers to the parish church, where the loaf is blessed.

Benidorm, gran centro turístico de la Costa

Blanca, celebra a lo largo de año un número

importante de fiestas. De entre ellas destaca la

que sus ciudadanos dedican a la Patrona, la

Virgen del Sufragio, en el mes de noviembre. El

segundo sábado de ese mes, toda la población

asiste a la conmemoración de la llegada de la

imagen de la Patrona a las playas de Benidorm

en una recreación histórica cargada de simbo-

lismo y profunda devoción. Fuego, fiesta y

ambiente a raudales en las calles de la ciudad

gracias al ímpetu de las peñas festeras. Sin

duda una celebración de gran atractivo para los

miles de visitantes que eligen Benidorm.

throughout the year. They include the festival

dedicated to the town’s patron saint, La Virgen

del Sufragio, which takes place in November.

The second Saturday of said month, all the

town attend the commemoration of the arrival

of the statue of the patron saint to the beaches

of Benidorm in a historical re-creation laden

with symbolism and deep devotion. Fire, fiesta

and streets brimming with atmosphere all over

the town thanks to the activities staged by the

festival groups. Undoubtedly a great attraction

for the thousands of visitors that choose

Benidorm for their holidays.

El calendario litúrgico cristiano marca con festividades solemnes

las conmemoraciones anuales del nacimiento de Jesús:

Nochebuena, Navidad, día de los Inocentes y la adoración de los

Reyes Magos. Coincidentes con el solsticio del comienzo del invierno

y con la llegada de un año nuevo, se constituye un ciclo completo

de celebraciones familiares y sociales de gran importancia, que en

cada lugar adquieren la impronta específica que la tradición ha ido

imponiendo: Cabalgatas de Reyes, danzas de pastorcillos, cantos de

aguinaldos y hasta representaciones de todos los acontecimientos

rememorados, como en el extraordinario Auto de los Reyes de

Cañada o en el Belén de Tirisiti de Alcoy.

The Christian liturgical calendar marks the annual commemoration

of the birth of Jesus with solemn festivals: Christmas Eve, Christmas

Day, Spanish All Fools’ Day on the 28th December and the Adoration

of the Magi on the 6th January. They coincide with the solstice of the

beginning of winter and with the arrival of a new year, a full circle of

familiar and social celebrations is completed and in each location, they

take on the specific form tradition has given them: parades of the

Three Kings, shepherds’ dances, carol singing and representations of

all the events being recalled, such as the extraordinary Auto de los

Reyes in Cañada or the Nativity Scene of Tirisiti in Alcoy.

Los Magos de Oriente que llevaron oro, incienso y mirra al Niño

Dios recién nacido, según tradición inmemorial, traen cada año

juguetes a los más pequeños en la noche mágica de la víspera de

Epifanía. En Alcoy, desde 1866, lo hacen desfilando por calles y pla-

zas en camellos y caballos, acompañados de colorista y variado cor-

tejo de gentes vistosamente engalanadas, al son de marchas orien-

tales, mientras innumerables pajes se elevan por escalerillas portá-

tiles hasta los balcones para ir dejando a niños y mayores sus anhe-

lados regalos.

The Three Wise Men of Orient, who, according to tradition

immemorial, bore gold, incense and myrrh to the Baby Jesus, bring

toys and gifts for children on the magical eve of the Epiphany. In

Alcoy, since 1866, they do so by parading through the streets and

squares on camels and horses, accompanied by a colourful array of

courtiers in wonderful costumes, and to the tune of Oriental mar-

ches, while an endless number of pages climb up the portable steps

to the balconies of the houses to leave the children their long-awai-

ted presents.
