    COURIER 3SLCompact slurry analyzer

  • Assay accuracy is comparable with

    manual sample-laboratory procedure.

Sampling and analysis is done in the

same consistent way around the clock.

Cost per sample is radically lower.

Lower cost allows frequent assays for

    real-time process monitoring and

    control.

    What can Courier

    analyzers do for you?

    Courier on-stream analyzers use the

    same WDXF X-ray fluorescence analysis

methods for assaying as used in tradi-

    tional laboratory analysis. Sampling,

analysis and sample return are fully

automatic and do not require operator

    attendance. Slurry samples do not

    require any preparation before analysis.

    Benefits

Increased recoveries as problems aredetected and solved rapidly.

Concentrate quality is controllableand undesired variations are mini-mized.

Plant operation is coordinatedresulting in more throughput.

Results from process tests and improve-ments are readily available.

    Savings in assaying costs.

    COURIER 3SLCourier

3SL is a member in the family of the Courier

    on-line XRF-analyzers for elemental assays.

The compact analyzer system offers flexibility and scalability for process monitoring and control in all

sizes of processing plants. Courier 3SL is a single frame analyzer to minimizing the infrastructure and

labor required for installation. It complements the family of high performance Courier analyzers in

distributed applications and remote sampling points. Outokumpu provides Customer Support Agreement to

guarantee maximum performance and reliability of the analyzer system.

  • Courier 3SL excites the sample in flowcell using low intensity X-rays. Atoms inthe sample react by emitting fluores-cence radiation which is characteristicof each individual element in theperiodic table.

Courier 3SL uses the same highresolution wavelength dispersiveanalyzer technology as high perfor-mance laboratory analyzers for criticalassays. Complementary energy disper-sive technology is used to increase the

    range of elements analyzed.

    Sample presentation

    X-ray fluorescence radiation penetrates

slurry only a short distance, typically

less than 1 mm. Reliable on-stream

process assays are only available if the

sample right at the surface of the

    analyzer window is representative of

    the whole process flow.

    Outokumpu - developed Jet Cell

    technology guarantees that fresh

    representative sample reaches the

    sensitive area for analysis.

    Sampling

Primary sampling in the Courier 3SL

analyzer system is based on the well

proven fast loop techniques of taking a

    representative primary sample from

the process flow to the analyzer

secondary sampler. A smaller sample is

    then divided for analysis.

    Example of resolution difference between

    wavelength and energy dispersive detectors

    Dependable assays fromrepresentative samples

  • COURIER 3SL Sample handling

Secondary sampling is used to make

sure that the sample is presented to the

analyzer in a repeatable and representa-

tive way, and to remove air from the

    sample.

    Courier 3SL analyzer introduces a

    completely new and innovative second-

    ary sampling system. The patented

    secondary sampling module offers

efficient screening of trash and taking a

    representative sample using a simple,

    compact module integrated into the

    analyzer frame.

    Primary samplers

Samples are taken from the process

using various types of standard Outo-

    kumpu primary samplers:

PSA and sector samplers for pressur-

    ized process pipes

LSA, SKA and NLA samplers for

    unpressurized pipes and launders

SPA samplers for well mixed vessels

Low head required by the Courier

3SL analyzer usually allows the sample

flows to be handled by gravity without

    need for pumping. Smaller process

flows can be taken through the ana-

    lyzer as such.

The primary sample flow may be

    continuous with or without automatic

flushing, or the sample flow may be

stopped and the delivery line flushed

    automatically between samples to

    ensure availability of the process

    sample.

    Analyzer operator interface

    The Courier 3SL analyzer operator

interface combines the use of control

switches and indicator lamps with the

graphic local display mounted on the

    analyzer probe control panel. Most

recent assays and analyzer status are

    shown on the display.

  • MAIN FEATURES

    Analyzer system

Up to twelve Courier 3SL analyzers

can be networked together to share a

    common operator station and one

connection to the plant process control

    (DCS) system.

    The operator station PC computer

displays the assays, trends and analyzer

status information. It is also used for

setting up the parameters of the

    Courier 3SL analyzers. Operator

    station collects analyzer system

diagnostic data for local and remote

    support.

    Outokumpu product range has

    compatible PROSCON 2100 process

    control and management systems for

    metallurgical applications.

    Calibration sampling

The Courier 3SL analyzer includes as a

standard an easy to use and reliable

calibration sampler. The built in calibra-

tion sampler helps the operator to take

    a truly representative and repeatable

sample from the measured slurry for

    comparative laboratory assays. The

calibration data can be read from the

    analyzer to the operator station

    OUTOCAL calibration program.

The calibration sampler is also able to

    demultiplex measured samples.

    Analyzer probe

The Courier 3SL analyzer combines in

a unique and cost effective way the

    well-proven wavelength dispersive X-

    ray fluorescence and the energy

    dispersive X-ray fluorescence methods.

    The analyzer has automatic reference

    measurement for instrument calibration

and self diagnostics. The analyzer probe

    contains the core analytical compo-

nents of the analyzer in a protective

    NEMA 4X compliant stainless steel

    enclosure.

    Flow cell

    Patented Jet Cell technology guarantees

that a representative fresh sample is

always presented for assaying. The flow

    cell design guarantees controlled

sample flow pattern in front of the

    analyzer window. Analyzer probe

    changes automatically the window,

which wears because of sample con-

    tact.

  • ISO 9001 quality

    assurance

    Outokumpu Mintec Automation

product line is ISO 9001 accredited

and has a rigorous quality manage-

ment policy to ensure that the quality

    expectations of customers are met.

    The Analyzer has certification.

    Number of sample streams

One Courier 3SL analyzer can mea-

sure up to 6 process sample streams

    through 3 inlets.

The Courier 3SL analyzer probe can

    measure elements from calcium to

uranium (atomic numbers 20 to 92).

    Sample flow rates

    Recommended 80-200 l/min. (20-57

    GPM), minimum 40 l/min. (11 GPM)

    and maximum 300 l/min. (85 GPM).

    Number of simultaneous

    assays

Courier 3SL analyzer can provide up

to 12 simultaneous assays from each

process sample. The assays can be

    calculated by using several calculation

models to adapt to varying ore types.

    Sample measurement time

    Sample measurement time is selectable

for each sample. Typical time for a

sample measurement is 2 to 5 minutes.

    Analysis cycle

Normal analysis cycle for three process

samples is from 6 to 15 minutes

SPECIFICATIONSdepending on the measuring time for

    each sample.

    Assays are calculated and updated

within cycle time of the analyzer. By

using the moving average for the

    analysis calculation, measurement

    results from the consecutive sample

measurements can be used to improve

    the statistics for low assays.

    Measurable concentration

    range

    Typical measurable concentration range

is 0.006 to 100% by weight for slurries.

    Detection limit

For most elements in slurry samples

detection limit is 30..60 ppm with the

    WDXF-measurement channel. With the

    EDXF-measurement channel detection

    limit is typically 30..500 ppm.

    Repeatability

    Short-term stability of the analyzer

under the specified conditions is 0.1%.

    The measurements of an internal

    reference sample automatically com-

    pensate for drift.

    Accuracy

Accuracy of measurement is a function

of the sample parameters such as:

    matrix composition, mineralization and

    particle size. Under normal operating

    conditions 4..8% relative standard

    deviation for minor concentrations, and

    2..5% relative standard deviation for

    major concentrations is achieved for

    individual slurry sample measurements

of concentration levels well above the

    minimum

    Analyzer calibration

    Optional integrated calibration sampler

    takes a repeatable and representative

    sample for the analyzer calibration.
