Labour goes rural BY DEAN TAYLOR TC170714DT01 LABOUR team in town (from left): Rimutaka MP Chris Hipkins, Taranaki-King Country candidate Penny Gaylor and Mt Albert MP David Shearer. Representatives of the Labour Party ventured into opposition territory this week to talk about their aspirations for rural New Zealand. Taranaki-King Country can- didate Penny Gaylor hosted for- mer Labour leader David Shearer and high flier Chris Hipkins in her patch. Mr Shearer is MP for Mt Albert and Labour spokesperson for Foreign Affairs and Energy. Mr Hipkins is Labour spokesperson for Education, Early Childhood Education and Forestry and MP for Rimutaka. In Te Awamutu Tuesday morning, before heading to vari- ous appointments and meeting in Otorohanga and Cambridge over a couple of days, they talked of the importance of rural communities. Passionate about education, Mr Hipkins said Labour’s recently announced education strategies will improve our nation’s schools, give young people more opportunities and have positive flow-on effects for family and community. Labour plans to reduce finan- cial burdens on parents by scrapping voluntary school donations, ensure all students from Years 5-13 have affordable access to a portable computing device at school and home and reduce class sizes by training 2000 new teachers. The extra teachers will be paid for by scrapping National's $359 million plan to pay New Zealand's best principals and teachers more so they can help struggling schools. Mr Hipkins is excited about the access to technology the package will offer. He says it will allow teachers and students to reach their full potential. “Schools can interact more easily with other schools,” says Mr Hipkins. That means students can work together right from all around the world and teachers can share great ideas and learn new and better ways to interact with all their students. Mr Shearer says in an earlier life he used to be a teacher, and it is hard to beat the feeling when you know you have reached a young person and made a difference. He believes everyone is keen to see education improve. “We go to Grey Power meet- ings expecting questions about superannuation and get asked what we are doing for young people,” says Mr Shearer. “The older generation want the best for their children and grandchildren.” He is also a fan of technology in education, saying if it excites children they will share it with their family — so in fact every- one is learning. They believe strong schooling contributes to strong communities, and that in turn can give young people more opportunities without having to always head for the big smoke. Mr Shearer says aging com- munities are not a positive out- come of centralisation, and he believes if there are legitimate choices for young people in smaller communities, it is a healthier outcome for New Zea- land. Mr Hipkins says even at ter- tiary education level, better technology means institutions no longer need to be in the biggest cities, so smaller scale, specialist providers will be able to operate in smaller communi- ties. Although Labour does not believe the roll out of fast fibre- optic broadband was handled as well as it could have been, they do welcome the opportunities it provides. NOT IMPRESSED What isn’t impressing Labour with regards to new technology is our power use of electricity. Mr Shearer is quoted as saying ‘New Zealand has the dumbest smart meters in the world’. He believes it. “A $20 chip in each meter would have given New Zea- landers the opportunity to monitor use and make smart choices about managing con- sumption,” says Mr Shearer. “We have no incentive to reduce peak demand and save ourselves and New Zealand money. “When consumption peaks we use the most expensive to run, least green, gas genera- tors. “Proper smart meters would allow consumers to turn off non-essential appliances and devices and better manage that demand,” he says.

HIP HOP dancer MJ Neethling.

MJ Neethling has his sights seton dancing as a career and isprepared to put in plenty of effort tomake it happen.

The Te Awamutu IntermediateYear 7 student travels to MtMaunganui at least twice everyweek for hip hop classes and isinvolved in local, national andinternational competitions.

It’s already been a big year forMJ.

His Hysteria Dance crew wasnamed champions at the 2014 Wai-kato/Bay of Plenty Hip Hop DanceChampionships held in Bethlehemearlier this year.

Last month Hysteria featured onPukana (Maori TV) and soon afterheaded for Brisbane to compete inthe House of Champions.

MJ says the eight-day trip wasan awesome experience.

“We finished in second place, bringing home a big trophy. We alsoattended hip hop workshops withexperienced international competi-tors and visited the theme parks.”

Although tired from the trip itwas straight back into competitionson his return.

He featured at the Waikato com-petitions in Cambridge, where hewon the solo 10-12 years section forthe third year in a row.

He hopes to attend two moreinternational events this year — theWorld of Dance in San Franciscoduring September and Hawaii inNovember.

While most people would findthis schedule of rehearsal andperforming busy enough, MJ stillmanages to fit some sports into themix as well.

He has been a Waikato touch and

rugby representative and is cur-rently playing rugby.

“I play for Te Awamutu SportsDevils in the 12th grade on Satur-days, then get cleaned up and headto the Mount for several hours ofhip hop training on Saturday andSunday.”

As well as practising dancemoves, his trainings involve plentyof fitness work.

“We ran up the Mount last week-end and did an hour workout.

“I do it because I love hip hop andI want to have a career as a dancer.”

MJ says he wouldn’t be able toattend international competitionswithout the generous support hereceives.

“Thanks to Kihikihi Rotary Cluband Cambridge Lions Club fordonations to help me go to Australia.

“Also to the local Te Awamutupeople who brought sausages at mysausage sizzles and gave me moneywhen I was busking outside TheWarehouse — every dollar helpedtowards my trip.

“I will be on the streets again soon, hip hopping towards my next goal.”

EASTER 1973 on Cyril’s launch.

BY CATHY ASPLIN

A local resident found six black and white photos, dated from the 1960s — 1970s, on Ohaupo Road earlierthis week.

He thinks they had probably fallen off a car roofand were in a frame that smashed as it fell on to theroad.

The photos had been taken on holiday in Ohope, at

the Farmers store in Auckland, at Nana’s and onCyril’s launch.

They all feature children — Donna and Ross aretwo of them — and they all appear to all be from thesame family.

Heated debate over road closuresBY GRANT JOHNSTON

An application for temporaryclosure of Sainsbury Road for a FiatClub Waikato hill climb sparked alively debate about traffic manage-ment at last week’s Waipa servicedelivery committee meeting.

There was no contention overthe closure of a two kilometrestretch of Pirongia Road on SundayAugust 10, from 9am-5pm or any ofthe publicity and safety steps theFiat Club was putting in place.

But the general subject of trafficmanagement plans elicited strongsentiments from some councillorsover publicising closures ade-

quately and ensuring safe parking.Cr Sue Milner referred to a

recent cycling event in Leamington, where motorists attempting totravel along roads they normallyused were frustrated to find theywere closed for the event.

“There needs to be a properpublicity plan for each event — notjust in letterboxes in that street.

“For every event where we arebeing asked to close a road, thereneeds to be notification on the roadstraffic comes from, not just oneblock around.

“There also needs to be a picturein the papers showing roads affec-ted. It is an issue that causes a lot of

aggravation.“This would also help the com-

munity to get out and watch theseevents, which leads on to the needfor provision of car parking.”

Group manager service delivery,Barry Bergin said traffic manage-ment plans were required for allroad closure applications.

He said if they did extendrequirements, any costs involvedwould fall back on the organisers.

Mr Bergin said Councilmaintained control over roadclosures.

“These events bring value to thecommunity, but we ensure the sameroads are not closed frequently.”

Graffiti paints townin a very bad lightBY GRANT JOHNSTON

Graffiti in Te Awamutuis costly to ratepayers aswell as the town’s image.

Councillors at lastweek’s Waipa service deliv-ery meeting expressed frus-tration at how hard it hasproved to reduce graffiti inTe Awamutu.

“Te Awamutu is a fabu-lous community with beau-tiful facilities, but it is beingruined by a few (graffitivandals),” Cr Hazel Barnessaid.

Cr Barnes said the rail-way station has beenruined by graffiti which aswell as being unattractive, contained obscenities – oneof which was pointed out toher by her seven-year-oldgrand-daughter as theywere driving past thestation.

“As soon as the publictoilets are looking nice, some tag appears again.

“If you asked me whatwas the thing most peoplecomplained to me about (inTe Awamutu), I would saygraffiti. I am not sayingCambridge is devoid of it,but graffiti is a real problemhere. What can we do aboutit?”

Community facilitiesmanager, Tony Roxburghsaid the majority of graffitiwas done by visitors to thetown, generally duringschool holidays.

“The police haveemployed personnel to lookat graffiti in Te Awamutu

and to document it. It is amatter of getting the evi-dence to prosecute thepeople doing it.

“Council has a contractwith a cleaner to clean it off.It is a reasonable com-ponent of the parksbudget.”

Cr Sue Milner said oneof the Auckland councils inan area which had beenprone to graffiti had moreor less solved the problemsand she suggestedresearching what othercouncils were doing aboutgraffiti.

Cr Laurie Hoverd saidTe Awamutu’s communitypatrol had a book detailingsites that were subject tograffiti.

“We have tried to look atways through CommSafe toprevent graffiti but it is ahard thing to stop.”

Cr Vern Wilson said thekey was removing graffitias quickly as possible.

Mr Roxburgh said therehad been discussions aboutoutfitting a trailer to bemanned by volunteers, which would paint outgraffiti.

“This would be inaddition to the work Coun-cil does.”

Cr Liz Stolwyk said itwas a hot topic, and rightlyso.

“Te Awamutu isn’t look-ing great at the moment. We need more information(about dealing with theproblem) at the next meet-ing.”

Every time I got a compliment I would get more inspired. Friends would say how good my skin looked. Good skin is a refl ection of good health. I never used to sleep very well when I was a size 16. I was always tossing and turning and waking up hungry. The kids used to get up before me and I’d tell them to go back to bed because I was tired and I needed more sleep. Now I am a size 10,I don’t get hungry, I sleep soundly and I am out of bed early. I have stacks of energy and I am way healthier.

Group manager service delivery,Barry Bergin told last week’s meet-ing that Waipa District Council wasinvolved in a range of initiativesaimed at enhancing traffic safety aturban and rural schools.

There had been implementationof 40km school hours speed limitsaround qualifying schools, with 25

per cent of the cost (signage etc.)contributed by participating schoolsthemselves. Ongoing discussionswere taking place between Councilengineering staff and schools.

Waipa had a road safety co-ordinator — Megan Jolly — whoserole included visiting schools to talkabout road safety.

Traffic signage near schools wasbeing upgraded with new high visi-bility signs.

New Zealand Traffic Authority(NZTA) guidelines had just beenupdated and roading staff would beundertaking an assessment of trafficissues around schools over the next12 months.

Mr Bergin said Council needed toensure it was consistent in how itmanaged schools (in relation to roadsafety).

“We need to see where schools fit

in the assessment.”Safety improvement options

included pedestrian underpasses/overpasses along with and signageupgrades.

Cr Barnes suggested Waipamight need to think about changingits slogan from ‘Home of Cham-pions’ to ‘Love of Children’.

“We have been told in the pastthat we have to ‘wait and see’ what isdone nationally to address some ofthe safety issues,” Cr Barnes said.

“What is Central Governmentgoing to do about some of the driverstupidity we see around our schools?

“NZTA rules mean all of theresponsibility is loaded on to schoolswhile nothing is done to improve theproblem of speeding vehicles aroundschools.

“Is the problem that kids don’tvote?”

WORLD Premiere of ‘State Highway 48’.

BY DEAN TAYLOR

‘Theycaptured the

emotion of themusical in away that was

raw andreal.’CHRIS WILLIAMS

It isn’t often you get toattend a world premiere —but that is exactly whattook place in Hamilton lastweek.

The rock opera StateHighway 48 — written byformer Te Awamutu manChris Williams — wasstaged at Clarence StreetTheatre for a short seasonand my wife and I were atThursday’s ‘full house’opening.

The musical is based onthe at-times tumultuousjourney of life at middleage.

Told through lyrics, melodies, and dance, ittraces a typical middle-aged couple, their kids andtheir friends as theygrapple with their dailylives, relationships andwork.

“Really it’s a comment-ary on life at middle age, intended to help make usall feel that it’s perfectlynormal to have some upsand downs, and that wecan all feel comfortable inour own skins,” said MrWilliams.

“I also wanted to empha-sise what’s important, which above all is com-munication and family.”

After finally getting theshow on to the stage, after afive year journey, MrWilliams couldn’t be moreimpressed with the turnoutor the standard of perform-ance.

“Opening night was anamazing life experience,”he said.

“I have been working onState Highway 48 for theprevious five years andwas incredibly excited, albeit nervous, to finallyshare it with the region.

“And it all exceeded myexpectations.”

Mr Williams describedleads Bryan Bevege andKersten Hickman as trulysome of Waikato, and NewZealand’s, leading perform-ers.

“They captured theemotion of the musical in away that was raw andreal,” he said.

The entire cast wasexcellent — and a credit toeveryone involved inbringing a brand newshow from inception tosuch a polished finishedproduct.

In proper musical tradi-tion, there was no dialogue— yet the songs and actingperfectly portrayed thestory.

We enjoyed the variety

of music styles and foundthe entire performanceand story captivating.

The talented cast werebacked by an equally cap-able band and a slick crew— State Highway 48flowed beautifully fromscene and scene and themusic kept us entertained.

Well done to everyoneinvolved in this ambitiousventure — this musicalcould easily play on anystage in New Zealand, andfurther afield.

Shield boys deliver

TC170714SP10

STANDOUT Te Awamutu winger Ihaka Rakatairi has plenty of support from his team-mates as he takes the attack to Hamilton Panthers in the playoff for third and fourth inthe Gwynne Shield tournament at Cambridge on Sunday.

BY COLIN THORSEN

Te Awamutu Gwynne Shield rugby teamwere rewarded for a fantastic tournamentthird placing with 10 players selected for theCity v Country trial game for Roller Mills.

The well-drilled, David Fox coached TeAwamutu side finished the revampedtournament in Cambridge with a six win, three draws, one loss record to go with theirtwo from two pre-season wins.

Their only loss was to the eventualwinners, Tritons from South Waikato.

“To go through a campaign of 12 gamesand only losing once was a huge effort bythese young men,” Fox told the Courier.

“They showed a lot of heart and had agreat defensive record which showed thatthey were playing for each other.

“As a management group we couldn’thave been more prouder how they conduc-ted themselves on and off the field.”

The team dug deep one last time onSunday to record a comprehensive 21-5 winover Hamilton Panthers in the play-off forthird and fourth.

It was always going to be another epicencounter after these two teams had drawntheir earlier game in the round-robin.

“The two evenly matched sides had greatrespect for each other, and there was hugesideline support for both teams,” says TeAwamutu manager, Erin Gibson.

“The atmosphere was buzzing and all 30players on the field responded with massivedefence.”

Te Awamutu gained a psychological edgeby scoring first through George Hayward, with Ahumai Edwards converting for a 7-0lead.

A further try to Dylan Jeffries, converted

by Edwards extended their advantage to 14-0at halftime.

Due to an injury, the game was switchedto an another extremely wet, boggy field forthe second half.

Panthers scored within a few minutes fora 14-5 scoreline.

Great hands were required to maintainpossession with mud everywhere andplayers slipping.

Te Awamutu sealed their 16 point victorywith a second Hayward try, converted byEdwards.

“How fantastic for the boys to finish theirrun with a third placing and get 10 playersnamed for the trial,” says Gibson.

“This truly shows how dominant wewere, it’s just a pity we weren’t quite able tomake those three draws into wins.”

The players invited to trial are JackGibson, Shaye Retemeyer, Jackson Tims,Grasyn Paikea, Dylan Jeffries, AhumaiEdwards, Te Kapa Crown, Ihaka Rakatairi,Luke Collins and Cobain Richardson.

The trial game will be played at Cam-bridge on Sunday, July 20, with Foxcoaching the Country team.

Te Awamutu beat Cambridge 34-12 afterleading 17-5 at halftime on Thursday.

Try scorers were Dylan Jeffries, Dee-JayMoana and two each from Luke Kidd andIhaka Rakatairi. Edwards added twoconversions.

Their spot in the play-off for third andfourth was clinched with an emphatic 34-12win over Hamilton Eagles and a hard-earnedscoreless draw against Morrinsville inFriday’s double-header. Tims, Hayward,Jacob Ashby and Jeffries were the tryscorers against the Eagles, with Edwardslanding three conversions.

Outstanding Sports gooh so close to upsetBY JUSTIN MIEZENBEEK

TETI TELA

Te Awamutu Sports gave thetable-topping Otorohanga Sports areal fright, going down 7-6 in acracker Waikato premier rugbyencounter.

It was a torrid affair played interrible conditions, as two teamsput away the expansive play booksand set about beating each otherinto submission.

The score suggests a dour slog inthe rain but this was far from it.

Island Reserve was in greatcondition considering the amountof rain that had fallen and theplayers’ skill level rose above theelements.

Like earlier in the year, thegame started tough and physical asthe two neighbours tried to estab-lish their will on the other.

Conditions favoured the hugeOtorohanga forward pack butSports came to play and gave asmuch as they got.

Lock Valentino Mapapalangiand flanker Fetu Sasalu wereespecially prevalent, fearlesslycarrying the ball into the hugetacklers and dishing out their shareof hits.

The early stalemate was eventu-ally broken by Te Awamutufullback Jared Bayliss slotting apenalty to lead 3-0.

Otorohanga replied by layingsiege to the Sports line, desperate toget ahead of the visitors.

The visitor’s defence was out-standing, repelling wave after waveof attacks to keep them scoreless.

Bayliss slotted another penaltyto stretch the lead to 6-0 at halftime.

As the time kept ticking, Sportsgrew in confidence. Their set piece, which had struggled most of theyear, all of a sudden clicked.

The visitors could sniff an upset,so too their loyal supporters whobraved the conditions to supportthem and grew more and morevocal with everything penalty andturnover.

Otorohanga, however, decidedthat the best way to nullify the waveof confidence was to hold the balland patiently work down themiddle.

The hosts held onto the ball formultiple phases, keeping the ball nowider than the edge of the ruck andwere eventually rewarded after theweight of possession on the goal-line paid off with flanker Jeremy Iticrashing over beside the posts.

Centre Dylan Collier convertedto give the competition leaders thelead for the first time in the gamemidway through the second half.

The wind picked up dramatic-

ally behind Otorohanga as the raincame down in sheets, and with theirnoses in front the hosts plugged thecorners — making Sports work outof their own end into the stiffbreeze.

The game was in the balanceuntil the final whistle.

Sports desperately tried to getinto the opposition half to strike, but the hosts were equally desper-ate to retain their one point leadand held off the gallant visitors toscore an enthralling, close victory.

It was a huge effort by Sports, but ultimately it was not enough toroll the leaders and avoid finishingin the bottom two and facing thepromotion/relegation round.

The forwards were immense inmatching up to the impressiveOtorohanga pack. Flankers CarlFindlay and Mathew Towers gotthrough a mountain of work in thewet, while front rowers Chris Keen,Andrew Solo and Wade Mclean-TeHuia worked tirelessly against big-ger opposition in laying a platform.

The standout was lock ValentinoMapapalangi, who towered in thelineouts and featured prominentlyin general play with his hugedefence and ball carrying ability ina game that was to be won and lostin the forwards.

The backs were largely quiet, which was to be expected in theconditions, but the combination ofRichard Judd and Teti Tela wasagain instrumental in guidingSports around the field.

Fullback Jared Baylissperformed well with the unenviabletask of tidying up play at the back inthe wet.

Sizzling Firehawksheading for semis

Te Awamutu SportsFirehawks rugby league teamcontinued their winning formen-route to a semi-finalplacing with a dominant 28-10victory against Hamilton CityTigers.

Leading 16-6 at halftime, the Firehawks maintainedtheir dominance of territoryand possession to run outcomfortable victors at AlbertPark on Saturday.

Coach Kane Rangitongawas pleased with the win, which has the Firehawks insecond place overall ,confirming a semi-final berthin two weeks.

“The weather was alwaysgoing to have an impact on thegame and we knew that pos-session of the ball was going toplay an important part in theoutcome.

“Our message was simple— possession of the ball, fieldposition and defence.

“We knew our attackingplays could match any otherteams, but we needed to showreal resilience with ourdefence. Our defence is whatour win was based on today.”

The opposition struggled tobreak through the Firehawksfirst line of defence, and whenthey did, the cover and scram-bling defence held them atbay.

The fact that Hamilton CityTigers only scored one try ineach half is a testament to howstrong the defence was. Bothtries scored by the oppositionwere from kicks into the goalarea.

Hamilton City Tigersshowed why they were seriouscontenders and their big for-ward pack tested theFirehawks commitment.

A number of Hamilton CityTigers’ raids made on theFirehawks goal line werestopped short by players beingheld up after crossing the lineor having the ball knockedfrom possession while scor-ing.

“That is the defence com-mitment we must have overthe ensuing weeks to have anychance of winning the com-petition,” says KaneRangitonga.

“We had a taste of finalslast year and the team aregetting ‘geared’ for a moredetermined, organisedattempt than in 2013 at win-ning the Reserve Grade com-petition for 2014.”

It was a satisfying win forthe Firehawks who play theirlast round-robin game thisSaturday at Albert Parkagainst United, who are acombination of College OldBoys and Hamilton Hornetsclubs.

College Old Boys defeatedthe Firehawks in the 2013final, so the Firehawks will belooking to ‘even the ledger’there as well.

Firehawks try scorers wereIsaac Howell (2); MoureaMorgan, Kuuta Ratima, KylieDiamond and JackieMaikuku.

Isaac Howell and HenareRaukawa landed one conver-sion each.

PIRONGIA captain Travis Cook holds the New Zealand Forest Productsdivision 1 challengers trophy aloft.

Pirongia captain Travis Cookwas the toast of his team afternailing a match-winning drop kickin their 15-12 win over Taupiri inWaikato division one rugby.

The Mountain Men finishedwith a flourish on Saturday, scor-ing 10 points in the final fiveminutes to wrest the NZFP div-ision 1 challengers trophy off Tau-piri and lock it away for thesummer.

Carl Sheridan reports that aftera season of ups and downs,Pirongia saved their best to last.

“It is hard to recall the last timewe beat Taupiri in division one,”he says.

“Pirongia wanted to finish theseason strong and show that thetalent that resides in the countryside is in fact able to produce theresults that they have promised allyear.”

At the 35 minute mark Pirongiawent up 5-nil with an outstandingteam try finished by prop Cam-eron Coombes emulating the greatSean Fitzpatrick hanging out onthe wing.

However, the lead was shortlived.

Taupiri sparked into life, hit-ting back with a converted tryfrom the last play of first half tolead 7-5.

Pirongia had the majority ofpossession early in the second halfbefore Taupiri broke out andscored to lead 12-5.

The next 30 minutes remained astalemate with both sides havingperiods of ascendancy only to bestifled by equally good defence.

Then, with five minutes remain-ing and Pirongia hard on attack, aloose clearance from Taupiriallowed Tyna Williams to pounce

and score. Travis Cook convertedto lock the scores up at 12-all with acouple minutes to play.

From the kick off Pirongiacharged the length of the fieldthrough forward runners andaggressive attack.

The Mountain Men positionedthemselves to win the game withcontrolled forward play, setting theplatform for Cook to calmly slot adrop kick from 35 metres to give his

side a 15-12 buffer. The drama was not over.Taupiri went hard on attack

with time just about up.A wide pass to their fullback

presented a scoring opportunitybut the ball spilled free as he wastackled over the line, much to thedelight of the Pirongia team andtheir loyal supporters.

Player of the day was TynaWilliams.
