It is a great pleasure for me to invite you to be part of the exciting future we are building and a world of opportunities we will be creating together. I understand that selecting a study program that can meet your goals is a very demanding, but rewarding decision of your life. We can make it easier for you as we offer a broad range of courses. We want to be part of your life journey whether you are a high school student looking for undergraduate qualifications or someone wanting a graduate degree to make the most of your potential.

Throughout its more than 50 year history as a leading university and a founding member of Vietnam Na-tional University, ULIS has played a defining role in foreign language education, international studies, and related fields through its pursuit of academic excellence, and commitment to innovation and creativity.

ULIS leads the nation in quality foreign language teacher education and international studies in Vietnam. It has hosted many international conferences and workshops. In the face of new challenges posed by global-ization and the emergence of a knowledge-based economy, ULIS fosters innovative educational practices to address the needs of a diverse student population. With the resources of the entire Vietnam National Uni-versity system, we are pioneering the introduction of double degree and double major programs consisting of a foreign language major and a major such as finance & banking, business administration, international business, law, and tourism – the first in Vietnam. We are also committed to international education.

ULIS has always understood that it is people who matter. It is the capacity and capability of our faculty and students that will determine what we are able to achieve. Our aim is to provide a friendly and stimulating environment that supports faculty and students to grow and to take leadership roles so that they can make the most of their own lives, and in the process, enhance our reputation as a powerhouse in Vietnam’s higher education system.

On a personal note, I understand that one of the questions you may ask is, what is in it for me at ULIS? The answer is, together we will create opportunities enabling us both to acquire knowledge and to develop those qualities vital to living and working in a globalized world such as critical thinking, teamwork, problem solving, communication, and people skills. I invite you to come spend a most meaningful part of your life with us as a student and later as an alumnus. Our mission is to assist you to lead a successful life whoever and wherever you may be.

EXPANDING CAREER CHOICES

Graduating students can choose to:

• Teach and do research in Chinese in different universities, junior colleges and secondary schools.

• Interpret and translate for companies, representative offices and other organi-zations of Vietnam and China.

After spending three years in the Foreign Language Specialized School (1999-2002) and another four years in the Chinese fast-track course of ULIS (2002-2006), Bui Thanh Huyen is arguably one of the most ‘veteran faces’ in this university. Graduating with a distinction degree, aided by her rich experi-ence as a youth union secretary of the Chinese department, Huyen has asserted herself as a competent learner and leader. Now a staff in the Sports Division of the national television channel (VTV3), she has become a popular reporter to the national audience with her coverage of different sporting events inside and outside Vietnam.

“Seven years learning Chinese gives me a true understanding of the values of the language I learn, especially when Vietnam is integrating quickly into the world. I think you agree with me that teachers are there to give ‘the fishing rod’ and not ‘the fish’, so let’s work hard and be active in your use of language to turn human knowledge into a fishing rod for ourselves.”

Bui Thanh Huyen – 2002-2006 student of Chinese.

BACHELORS IN CHINESE TEACHER EDUCATION (FAST-TRACK Program)

The program, specifically designed from the first to the fourth year with a selection of con-stantly adapted and updated course-books and participatory teaching methods, offers students a unique opportunity to develop their creativity and team spirit in learning and doing research. The Chinese Faculty is an excellent provider of Chinese teachers who spread na-tionwide to work in different universities, ju-nior colleges and high schools.

ULIS is the first education institution nation-wide to have a bachelor degree program in Chinese language teacher education and has been very responsive to the increasing social demands for Chinese teachers in the present and immediate future.

During the first and second year, students spend most of their time learning Chinese skills (listening, speaking, reading and writing) through a system of theme-based course materials that depict China – the land, the people and its age-old traditions.

In the third year, students will start learning teaching methodology, theory-based subjects (Chinese culture and civilization, Chinese literature, Chinese phonetics and phonology, grammar and semantics, etc.). These subjects are designed to give students solid background and specialized knowledge conducive to their future re-search projects. In the fourth year, apart from the contin-ued acquisition of theoretical issues, students will also start doing micro-teaching. In the vicinity of the student residential com-plex are the stadium, multifunctional halls, computer literacy centers, health clinic, and a 600 sqm two-story student restaurant, all of which contribute to a convenient and comfort-able student life.

Students who want more private space can choose to rent a house outside the campus, but the sanitary and security conditions of
