La motonave Skorpios III, zarpa todos los sbados al anochecer desde la ciudad de PuertoNatales, ubicada a 247 kms al noroeste de Punta Arenas, en un crucero de cinco das de

navegacin por los canales y fiordos que bordean el Campo de Hielo Sur, en la Patagonia

Chilena, considerado la tercera reserva de agua dulce del planeta y cuna de los glaciares

ms grandes y espectaculares del hemisferio sur. Para llegar a la regin de Magallanes,

tenemos la opcin de va area, arribando a la ciudad de Punta Arenas o por va

terrestre desde Argentina. Desde esta ciudad, debemos trasladarnos al terminal

Skorpios de Puerto Natales. En este lugar, se inicia la travesa martima a travs

de Angostura Kirke, enfilando hacia el norte por los canales Morla Vicua,

Seno Unin, Collingwood, canal Sarmiento, Concepcin y Wide, para recalar

en el hermoso paraje conocido como Seno Eyre.

The motorvessel Skorpios III, sets sail every saturdays evening from PuertoNatales, located 247 kms to the north of Punta Arenas, on a five day cruisethrough the channels and fjords that border the Southern Ice Field, in

the Chilean Patagonia, which is considered to be the third largest reserve

of fresh water on the planet and crib of the biggest and most spectacular

glaciers in the southern hemisphere. There are two options to reach

the region of Magallanes: flying to Punta Arenas or comming

overland from Argentina. From this city, passengers must be

transferred to the Skorpios Terminal in Puerto Natales. The

maritime route commences through the Kirke Narrows, moving

towards the north through the Morla Vicua, Unin Inlet,Collingwood, Sarmiento, Concepcin and Wide channels,

to anchor in a beautiful area known as the Eyre Inlet.

Junto con las primeras luces del da lunes, la motonave Skorpios III se aproxima al Glaciar Po XI, el mayor de Sudamricacon una extensin de 1.263 km2y que se encuentra ubicado en el Parque Nacional Bernardo OHiggins. Cerca de las12:30

hrs, se inicia el retorno navegando a travs del Seno Eyre, canal Grappler y Paso del Indio. Desembarcando en Puerto

Edn, localidad ubicada a unos 400 kms al norte de Puerto Natales. Situado en la isla Wellington, sus primeros habitantes

corresponden a tribus nativas de la regin, los Kaweskar o Alacalufes. Actualmente, an viven aqu los ltimos miembros

de esta etnia que est a punto de extinguirse.

Monday, along with the early light of dawn, the motorvessel Skorpios III approaches the Po XI Glacier, the largest inSouth America with total surface area of 1,263 km2, which is located in the Bernardo OHiggins National Park. Around

12:30 hrs, the return trip is initiated through the Eyre Inlet, Grappler channel, and Paso del Indio. Debarking in

Puerto Eden, which is located some 400 kms to the north of Puerto Natales. Situated on the Isle Wellington, its first

inhabitants correspond to the native tribes of the region, the Kaweskar and Alacalufes. Currently there are still

some living members of these ethnic groups, tribes that are now on the point of extinction.

Navegando en estos canales y fiordos, nos empezamos a fascinar con un paisaje de impresionantescontrastes de luz y de sombras, donde la montaa se funde con un mar plagado de islas,

fiordos y cascadas, en un laberinto de belleza sin igual de canales que fueron explorados

por legendarios navegantes como Ladrillero, Darwin y Fitz Roy, entre muchos otros. La

naturaleza en esta zona se manifiesta con una gran variedad en su fauna y flora. Los patos

liles, quetros, toninas, cormoranes, cipreses, lengas, ires, helechos, etc., asombrarn a

quienes aman al mundo con una mirada ecolgica. Nos internamos a travs del Paso

del Abismo y Canal Wide para llegar al Glaciar Amalia, ubicado en la parte central

del Campo de Hielo Sur. Su blanca silueta parece descolgarse desde las abruptas

montaas para depositar sus hielos en las aguas del estero Peel.

Sailing through these Channels and Fjords, we become enthralled with scenery of

impressionable contrasts of light and shadows, where the mountains run intothe sea which is dotted with multiple Isles, Fjords, Channels, Water Falls, in a

labyrinth of beauty that has no equal. These are Channels that were explored

by such legendary discoverers as, amongst many others, Ladrillero, Darwin

and Fitz Roy. The natural beauty is manifested through an immense variety

of flora and fauna. Lilly Ducks, Mud Hens, dolphins, cormorants, cypress

and lenga trees, hardwood trees, and gigantic ferns, etc., all of which

amaze those who love ecology. Sailing through the Paso del Abismo

and Wide Channel we reach the Amalia Glacier, which is located

in the central zone of the Southern Ice Field. Its white silhouette

appears to hang precariously from the craggy mountains so asto deposit its ice in the waters of the Peel Inlet.

En esta zona existen muchos glaciares que fluyen con lentitud inexorable hacia el ocanoPacfico, transformando y modelando el paisaje a travs de los siglos. Fondearemos en el

fiordo Antrim, donde la nave se abastecer de agua dulce de un ro sin contaminantes,

momento en que podremos hacer excursiones por este lugar, un antiguo lecho de glaciar,

que hoy muestra toda su verde vegetacin. Al regresar al barco disfrutaremos de lo

vivido a bordo de la motonave Skorpios III. La excursin al Glaciar Bernal ser, sin

lugar a duda, otra de las experiencias de este viaje, ya que podremos caminar hasta

su base para apreciar como es la muerte o extincin de un Glaciar.

Fjord, where our ship will supply of natural sweet water from a clear river, a moment that we

will take for making an excursion for this place, and old glacier bed that today can show us

all its green and beautiful vegetation. Once we get on board again, we will enjoy all that wehave lived on board Skorpios III. The excursion to the Bernal Glacier will be without no

doubt another of the great experiences during this journey, since we could walk until its

base and appreciate how a glacier is disappearing.

El Glaciar Po XI se ubica en la parte norte del Campo de Hielo Sur, al final del Seno Eyre. Es elglaciar ms grande del hemisferio sur con 1.242 km2de superficie, (ms de la que ocupa Santiago,

capital de Chile). Su gran tamao lo transforma en un verdadero coloso de hielo con un frente

de aproximadamente 6 kms de ancho y torres que se alzan sobre los 75 mts de altura y con un

largo de 64 kms. Es uno de los pocos que se encuentran en su posicin mxima neoglacial,

registrando avances hacia el mar de hasta 10 kms en los ltimos aos. La antigedad del

Glaciar Po XI es simplemente milenaria y es uno de los 48 glaciares que nacen del Campo

de Hielo Sur, que tiene una superficie de 13.000 km2y un largo sobre la Cordillera de

los Andes de ms de 350 kms. Aqu, la motonave Skorpios III se aproxima a este Glaciar

para navegar entre icebergs de diferentes tamaos y formas, de coloridos tonos azules,

celestes y blancos que impresionarn al visitante.

The Po XI Glacier is located in the northern part of the Southern Ice Field, at theend of the Eyre Inlet. This is the largest glacier in the Southern Hemisphere, with atotal surface of 1,243 km2(more than the land surface of Santiago, the Capitol of

Chile). Its humongous size transforms it into a truly colossus of ice, it has a frontal

face of approximately 6 kms, towering higher than 75 mts, with an overall length

of 64 kms. This is one of the few glaciers that is found in its maximum neo-

glacial position, registering advances towards the sea of up to 10 kms in recent

years. The age of the Po XI Glacier is millenarian; it is one of the 48 glaciers

that are born of the Southern Ice Field, which has a surface of 13,000

km2and a length of more than 350 kms over the Andes Mountains. Here,

the motorvessel Skorpios III sails close to the Glacier to navigate amongsticebergs of different sizes and shapes, of varying colors, light blue

and white, an impressive sight for the passengers.

Siguiendo por el Estero Peel, encontramos el Glaciar Amalia, ubicada en la parte central delCampo de Hielo Sur. Ver su larga silueta que desciende desde la Cordillera de los Andes, es

todo un espectculo que emociona con sus torres de hielo y el colorido contraste con el entorno.

Este glaciar tiene un ancho aproximado de 1 km y una altura de 50 mts y su masa de hielo

se genera por las intensas nevazones que, al congelarse, se transforma en hielo con aspecto

de cristal al perder parte del oxgeno por la presin de su propio peso. Posteriormente,

ingresaremos al Fiordo Calvo donde avistaremos 6 glaciares, surcando por aguas sembradas

de tmpanos de increibles colores, variados tamaos y formas, realizando una grata

excursin en botes a motor para brindar con nuestro tradicional whisky con estos

hielos milenarios. Por la tarde haremos una excursin al Glaciar El Brujo, donde

podremos caminar sobre las rocas adyacentes al Glaciar, una aventura nica.

Continuing along the Peel Inlet, we find the Amalia Glacier, located in the central

part of the Southern Ice Field. It is an absolutely emotional spectacle to see its longsilhouettes of towering ice, descending from the Andes Mountains, which contrast

with the colors of the surrounding environment. The frontal face of this glacier is

approximately 1 km and reaches heights of 50 mts, this ice mass is generated

from the intense snow blizzards, when the snow freezes it is transformed into

ice that has a crystal aspect. This is due to the fact that it loses oxygen under

the great pressure of its own weight. Later, we enter the Calvo Fjord, where

we can view 6 glaciers flowing through waters seeded with ice flows of

incredible colors, varying sizes and forms. Here is where we, in specially

designed motorboats, participate in an extremely enjoyable excursion

and were we traditionally have a toast with whiskey and millenniumold ice. During the afternoon we will do a new excursion to El Brujo

Glacier, an unique adventure where we could walk on the rocks

close to the Glacier.

Este Parque Nacional tiene una extensin de 181.000 hectreas y est ubicado en el Seno de Ultima Esperanza a 150 kms de Puerto Natales.Fue declarado Reserva Mundial de la Bisfera por la Unesco en 1978. Ingresaremos por el sector de Laguna Amarga y Laguna Azul a

travs de parajes de pampas y espesos bosques magallnicos. Destacan las Torres y Cuernos del Paine, con su imponente estructurageolgica de piedra y granito; sus lagos de variados colores como el Nordeskjold, Peho, Toro, Sarmiento y Grey; sus mamferos,

como el puma, el guanaco y el huemul y sus aves como el and, el cisne de cuello negro, cisne coscoroba y el guila, entre otras, yuna gran variedad de rboles, arbustos y flores nativas.

TORRES DEL PAINEThis National Park covers an area of 18,000 hectares and is located in the Ultima Esperanza Inlet, some 150 kms from Puerto

Natales. UNESCO declared it a World Biosphere Reserve in 1978. Entrance is made to the Amarga and Azul Lagoon sectors byway of the vast pampas and thick magellian forests. Highlights are the Torres and Cuernoes of Paine, with their imposinggeological structure of stone and granite; colorful lakes such as Nordenskjold, Peho, Toro, Sarmiento and Grey; mammals

as such pumas, guanacos, and Guemals, as well as birds like the nandu and black necked swans, amongst others. Besidesthis there is an abundant variety of trees, shrubs and native flowers.

MILODON CAVELocated 24 kms to the north of Puerto Natales, this natural monument is formed by three caverns and a conglomerate

of rocks called, the Seat of the Devil. Its dimensions are: a height of 30 meters, a 80 meters face and 200 metersdepth. Scientific interest in this mysterious place is due to the discovery, in 1896, of, skin, bones and other fragments

of now extinct animals. The MILODON (Mylodon darwini), was a herbivorous animal of great dimensions thatprobably became extinct at the end of the Pleistocene.

Ubicada a 24 kms al norte de Puerto Natales, este monumento natural est formado por tres cavernas y un conglomerado rocosodenominado "Silla del Diablo, siendo sus dimensiones de 30 metros de alto, 80 metros de frente y 200 metros de profundidad.

El inters cientfico del lugar est dado por el hallazgo en 1896, de piel, huesos y otros restos de un animal extinto, el MILODON(Mylodon darwini), un hervboro de grandes dimensiones que se extingui probablemente, a fines del pleistoceno.
