1996-00 University of Massachusetts Lowell (UMASS Lowell) Doctor of Science (Sc.D.) majoring in Occupational Ergonomics with minors in

Epidemiology and Work Physiology. Doctoral thesis title: “Musculoskeletal disorders, ergonomic exposures, and construction ironwork.”

1992-94 Technical University of Nova Scotia (subsumed into Dalhousie University) Master of Applied Science (M.A.Sc.) in Industrial Engineering majoring in

Ergonomics. Master thesis title: “Isometric Push-up and Pull-down Strength Profiles in Workspace Reach Envelopes of Paraplegics.” This research study involved measuring and recording the arm strength of paraplegics and determining how they related to specific workspace envelopes.

1987-90 University of the West Indies (UWI) B.Sc. Industrial Engineering (Upper Second-Class Honors). Was awarded the

Faculty of Engineering Prize for obtaining the highest mark among final year (Year III) graduating Industrial Engineering students. Was awarded the J.A. Buzacott Prize for obtaining the 2nd highest mark among Year II Industrial Engineering students.

(Lorin Kerr (1909 -1991) was a life-long activist and served for over 40 years as a physician for the United Mine Workers. He was dedicated to improving coal miners' and other workers' access to care, and to attaining black lung disease compensation and prevention.)

1999 Selected by the Dean of the College of Engineering as the College of Engineering’s Most Outstanding Doctoral Student for 1999. Each year, the Dean of Engineering selects a candidate from one of the six Departments in the College to represent Engineering in the university-wide competition.

1999 Selected by the Department of Work Environment as the Department of Work Environment’s Most Outstanding Doctoral Student for 1999. Each year, the faculty of each department selects one doctoral student who they think has been the most outstanding doctoral student to receive this award from the Graduate School.

1997 Awarded one of 10 available LASPAU Trustees’ Fund grants (US$300) to cover expenses related to doctoral research activities.

1996/98 Awarded a two-year Fulbright/LASPAU Scholarship. Within Trinidad, the Fulbright scholarship is

typically awarded to only one person per year based on the recommendation of the US Information Agency which interviews all applicants.

1996 Awarded a full Commonwealth Scholarship by the UK government. This scholarship is awarded annually to 3 or 4 citizens of Trinidad and Tobago based on the recommendations of the Government of Trinidad and Tobago. Competition for these scholarships are extremely intense with hundreds of applicants vying each year for the few scholarships awarded. (I subsequently turned down this scholarship in order to take up the Fulbright/LASPAU Scholarship).

1992/94 Awarded a two-year Research Grant from Department of Industrial Engineering, Technical University

of Nova Scotia to pursue a Masters of Applied Science degree (M.A.Sc). 1990 Awarded The University of the West Indies Faculty Prize for obtaining the highest mark for Year III

(final year) graduating Industrial Engineering class. (The Industrial Engineering undergraduate program at UWI is currently a 3-year degree program).

1989 Awarded the J.A. Buzacott Bursary for being the Year II Industrial Engineering student who places 2nd in Industrial Engineering.

1985 Awarded the Zonal Merit Award for Debating Competition for being the top debater in the East Zone of the Trintoc National Schools Debating Competition, Trinidad. W.I.

A summary of some of the key projects and assignments I have worked on are listed below:

Lead person in observation based (Posture, Activity, Tools, Handling) PATH

training and development.

Helped develop a computerized version of PATH.

Lead researcher in research to determine the prevalence of repetitive-type jobs and

activities/tasks on the Central Artery/Third Harbor Tunnel Project (Big Dig);

subsequently helped develop ways to measure and record the levels of such

exposures.

Lead person in the development and implementation of a cross-sectional study

involving ironworkers (Local #7).

Responsible for the development and maintenance of the Department of Work

Environment and COHP’s web pages.

NIOSH Back Belt Project - provided ongoing advisory and technical support to

NIOSH personnel in the implementation of PATH for the Wal-Mart Back Injury

Health, Safety, and Security Committee, Chair – The HSSC committee was mandated to provide

technical support as well as monitor and ensure that all SGU facilities are safe, secure, and do not

in any way effect the health of its user population. (2) International Technologies Limited, Trinidad - 1991/92

Product Engineer - Provided support to both Administration and the Production and Technical

Departments. Specific duties included Quality Control and Product Design.

Planning/Production Manager - Provided support to both Administration and the

Production/Technical Departments. Specific duties included Production Planning, Plastics

Technology, Inventory Control, Pricing/Cost Estimation, and Management/Administration.

(4) ABEL Clay Products, Trinidad - 1989 (summer job)

Design Engineer – Did a detailed analysis and submit a report that outlined a packaging system

for all of ABEL clay products. Two designs were built and tested. Cost analyses for both designs

were carried out and recommendations for cost saving made.

(5) Caribbean Agriculture Research and Development Institute (CARDI), U.W.I., St. Augustine,

Trinidad - 1988 (summer job)

Library Assistant - entering of data into computer system; cataloging and sorting of books,

journals, etc.; re-shelving of all books in library.

(6) Trinidad & Tobago Bureau of Standards - 1985 (winter job)

Laboratory Technician – Worked in Laboratory Services Division sorting, cataloging and

packing of laboratory equipment.

(7) Quickbuild Construction Projects, Trinidad - 1986/99

These projects involved the construction of auditoriums that can seat up to 250 persons in four (4)

or five (5) days or over two weekends. I have been involved in two ways: (i) Monitoring of all on-

site activities with the intentions of recording all problems that occurred and suggesting possible

solutions in the form of a written report submitted at the end of the project, and (ii) as a mason.

2006 Data Analyst for ‘Caribbean Health Service Provision Inventory’ project: Conducted data analysis for all seven countries (St. Kitts, Nevis, Antigua, Grenada,

Trinidad, Tobago, and Suriname) of Phase II of the C-HSPI project. 2005 Biomedical Waste Management Manual for Healthcare Personnel in Grenada Developed a biomedical waste management training manual Waste Management Manual

for Healthcare Personnel in Grenada manual for the Government of Grenada. Project

funded by World Bank.

1997 Ergonomics Consultant Hired by NIOSH to help design, develop and pilot test an ergonomic exposure assessment

protocol that would be used in support of their Wal-Mart Back Belt Study.

University’s Administrative staff.

1999 Web Page Design Course (9 - 10 September, 1999) Conducted a two-day introductory course on web page design and layout for the staff and

faculty of the Department of Work Environment, University of Massachusetts Lowell,

Lowell, MA.

1997 Ergonomics Training Instructor Conducted two 3-day training sessions (3/97 and 9/97) for NIOSH personnel. Training

was provided in the use of an ergonomic exposure assessment protocol developed

especially for use in NIOSH’s Wal-Mart Back Belt Study (see below).

1997 Health and Safety Training Workshop (26 – 30 May, 1997), Trinidad One week course conducted by Dr. John Wooding, Dr. Beth Rosenberg, Ms. Parker, and

myself for the All Trinidad Sugar and General Workers Trade Union. My main

responsibility was to design and deliver the ergonomic portion of this course to union

workers drawn from a wide range of local industries. It should be noted that this course

was a direct result of the ISGWE’s visit in January 1997 (see below).

1997 International Study Group for Work Environment: visit to Trinidad (6 – 10 January)

Helped organize and was part of first symposium organized by the International Study

Group on Work Environment (ISGWE) in Trinidad. The ISGWE is a group created to

examine work environment issues from various international perspectives. The major goal

of our visit to Trinidad was to – via a series of presentations, discussions, and site visits –

learn of the important work issues from various groups in Trinidad and foster further

exchange of information.

1996 Ergonomics Consultant Helped develop a three-week training course on "Work Study Methods" to be given to

trainees at the Telecommunication Services of Trinidad and Tobago (TSTT).
