Highlights
My outstanding performance in teaching, service, research and applied work
demonstrates that I am a committed, prolific and all-rounded academic with
creative ideas and positive attitudes towards my teaching and research.
I love teaching and enjoy sharing my values, knowledge and life experiences
with students. To enable and facilitate my students to become an independent,
people-oriented and society-oriented person with critical thinking through formal
as well as informal education is my mission.
Teaching As an educator, my main objectives are to stimulate the students’ interests in
acquiring knowledge, to foster in them a real concern for the society and to assist
them to cultivate a systematic and critical way of thinking.
Results of my teaching evaluation are rated well above the average score of
Department of Social Work at the Chinese University of Hong Kong whereas
some of them are among the best ratings of the department. It demonstrates that
my teaching performance is recognised and appreciated by my students.
I have enthusiastically participated in planning, implementing and evaluating
the curriculum and teaching of the programmes of Bachelor Degree and Master
Degree of the Department of Social Work.
In recognizing my outstanding teaching performance, I am awarded the
Exemplary Teaching Award 2011 by the Faculty of Social Science, the Chinese
University of Hong Kong.

College and University Service
Since 2009, I have joined the Assembly of Fellows of Shaw College and also
served as a warden of the Kuo Mou Hall since 2011. Furthermore, I organized a
Service Learning General Education course for Shaw students since 2010 to
understand the poverty situation and alleviation strategies in China, the service
target are the poor rural and urban residents in China. I also serve as advisor and
judge for various social service programmes of Shaw students and initiated an
acroponic project for the Shaw student to understand importance of food
sustainability.
I have served as the Associate Director of the Centre for Civil Society Studies
since 2008 and Director of Centre for Quality of Life. Both research centres are
under the Hong Kong Institute of Asia-Pacific Studies, CUHK. I have served as
an elected Board member of the Faculty of Social Science since 2009.
I have served as the leader of the Community Research Team and a member of
the steering committee of the I-Care Programme since 2014. I was also invited
by different student organizations to deliver seminars and talks and being
advisors of their service projects.
Research
Trained as a social worker as well as a sociologist, I am interested in conducting
applied and action researches in the field of poverty, social security, labour,
community economic development as well as services to homeless people, youth
and ethnic minorities.
I have achieved excellent performance in my research work. Since 1994, I have
successfully conducted 32 research projects and been granted a total sum of more
than HKD 12,789,000. Most of these researches are applied social researches
which I act as Principal Investigator. In recognizing my research performance, I
was granted Global Scholarship Programme for Research Excellence – CNOOC
Grants 2012-13 by the Chinese University of Hong Kong to support me to be
visiting scholar at the School of Social Welfare, University of California,
Berkeley in 2013.
In 1999-2000, being the Principal Investigator of the research ‘Drawing Hong
Kong’s Poverty Line: An Inter-disciplinary Study’, I was granted a Competitive
Earmarked Research Grant (CERG) of the amount of HKD 601,992 by the
Research Grants Council (RGC). In 2009, being the Principal Investigator of the
research ‘The Impact of the Introduction of a Statutory Minimum Wage on
Labour Market’, I was granted a Public Policy Research Funding Scheme, of
the amount of HKD 448,500 by the RGC. In 2011, I was granted again by the
RGC for the Strategic Public Research Funding Scheme for the project
‘Trends and Implications of Poverty and Social Disadvantages in Hong Kong: A
Multi-disciplinary and Longitudinal Study’ of the amount of HKD 3,250,000.

Applied Work
I have actively contributed my knowledge and expertise to non-government
organisations, professional bodies and the Hong Kong Government. I had been
elected as the Chairperson of the Committee on Social Security and Employment
Policy of the Hong Kong Council of Social Service from 1998 to early 2001
and from 2011 till 2012 and as Vice Chairperson from 2012 to 2014. From 2002
to 2007 I was a member of the Programme Committee and have been a member
of the Council since 2013 of Oxfam Hong Kong. From September 2004 to
2010, I was the Vice-chairperson of UNISON Hong Kong, a non-government
organisation which is concerned about the rights of the ethnic minorities in Hong
Kong. I have become the Chairperson of UNISON Hong Kong since 2010. I was
elected as a member of the Election Committee (Social Welfare) in 2006 and
2011 and voted in the election of Chief Executive.
To advocate for policy changes, I have frequently been interviewed by print and
electronic media to demonstrate the results of my applied researches. I have also
been a critic writing commentaries regarding social issues. I am convinced that I
am recognised as a social-minded academic.
