It’s funny how some things stick in your mind for a long time. I remember sitting at the table one day when I was in my teens, leafi ng through the latest issue of “Cattlemen’’ and admiring that picture perfect female that was always in that little box ad that C.R.A.P.S. ran in every issue. I guess I was thinking aloud when I announced that someday I would like to own a herd of cows that looked like that. My dad asked me what I was talking about and when I showed him the ad he replied ‘What in the hell would you want those for?’ Angus was not the in thing in the late 70’s and in my dad’s eye, if it was not white or tan and weighed at least a ton, it could not possibly make you any money! I am pretty sure he was still thinking that when Diane and I purchased our fi rst registered females 20 years ago, but he held his tongue that time. I think it had something to do with the fact that he really liked the bull we had bought the year before to use on our heifers.

Here we stand a short 20 years later at a fork in the road. We have a herd of outstanding, productive females with excellent udders and lots of barrel and really good structure and bone to them, but our lives are headed in a slightly different direction and so we have decided to offer for sale that which has been our passion for the past 20 years. We were never much for the show road or a lot of pomp and pageantry, but believed that every cow on the place needed to be the right kind and productive as can be without a big feed bucket. We always attempted to move our program along a slightly different path than most were taking. We looked for unique, fresh bulls and bloodlines that may not have been the current favourites but were certainly the right kind and something that we felt would enhance ours and our customers programs. We never feared trying a few outcross genetics or even some older, proven ones that we felt would still work. We were also not afraid to cull an experiment that did not work out. No matter how good the cattle looked at fi rst glance, structure, functionality and production were always at the forefront of our program! Great hair coats are also a must in a prairie winter and that has been a focus of ours.

The best part of this industry though is still the people. We have made many friends in these cattle circles over the years and do hope we are able to keep in touch with all of you. The warmth and hospitality with which we were welcomed into your homes on our rather infrequent tours is nothing short of wonderful and these are memories we will always have. Thank you.

Please join us on November 6th in Virden to celebrate 20 years of friendship and share some hospitality with us. It would be our privilege to be your host on the occasion of our dispersal. P.S. You will notice some multiple exposures on some of the females. This was due to fl ooded pastures this summer and having to shuffl e some cows around.

It is with obvious mixed emotions that the D-Bar Dispersal is drawing near. To realize that the Angus fraternity is losing a great leader,

breeder and promoter is a sobering thought but on the other hand, what an opportunity for others. Here we have an established program

that has become the source for one of the leading bull sales in Manitoba. The search for functional, useful females as a foundation

was always in the forefront of the D-Bar program.

Now in the herd’s prime, we fi nd as stout a set of herd bulls as can be put together. The Pathfi nder infl uence along with Red D-Bar

Current Trend 9K set a base and standard upon which to develop. Then came the fabulous breeding Red U2 Dynamo 7021T, the high

selling bull in the 2008 U2 Bull Sale at $24,000, partnering up with Lewis Farms for possession. Red Minburn Windy 178R was added

for his outcross Black genetics, backed by power and performance. Prior we have the Major League infl uence through Red Gold-Bar

Homerun ML 1011R. The most recent addition was Red U2 Mission Impossible 150W, again one of the leading and high selling bulls

secured in the 2010 U2 Bull Sale.

The D-Bar program is run very practically with minimal inputs allowing for cows production to be identifi ed. The work is done for you!

You may wonder if D-Bar genetics will continue to work well elsewhere - well the lead-off female sold at the historic Gold-Bar Dispersal

was a 2 Year Old from here, who together with her bull calf, were one of the sale highlights.

The beef industry is on the move, the opportunity to purchase seedstock from recognized programs is sure to be a highlight in these

re-building times. Again, the opportunity is yours to embrace and further develop. Daryll, Diane and family have given to the industry

in a tireless fashion, while compiling a herd backed by tremendous integrity. It has always been a pleasure to work with these folks

The Heather family is possibly the easiest doing and productive cow family you will fi nd. They are well

structured with lots of bone and great udders. They put on body condition on what most cows would consider a

maintenance ration while raising a top calf.

We never sold many females from this family as they were too hard to part with and the sons have proven

themselves worthy and have been among the top picks every year, including one son of 5N to U2 at Coaldale.

Red Chopper K Valentine 25K was our sight unseen selection out of the 2000 SuperStar sale. Not a bad choice as she has turned out to be one of the matriarchs to our herd. Nearing 12 years old, she is still pretty easy to look at and would be in the sale except we had to remove a toe about 5 years ago due to an abscess. In her prime, 25K would have out profi led most cows in the breed and still has it. Her daughters, though

not real numerous, are also front page material and as productive as their mother. Red D-Bar Valentine 3M left here as a calf and went on to make a bunch of cash for Stewart’s, Wagner

Angus, and now resides at T-K in their fl ush program. She looked awesome when I last saw her. Valentines are a productive addition to any program.

Every so often one has to consider oneself privileged to know some of the truly nice people in the business and Robert and Karen Harris and girls were real ambassadors. It was sad to see their exit last year due to health reasons

and we wish them all the best. We tried to buy Shining Armour that day at Round’s and only succeeded in making him more expensive. I wish I had

known then what a great breeding bull he would go on to be! I also wish we would have dug in and bought up more daughters along the way.

LPC Soapy 12L was one of Soo Line’s consignments to Red Round-Up in 02’ and has become an awesome producer

for us up to her untimely demise this year. Her only daughter was her 1st calf by Dwajo Gladiator who needs

no introduction and was in my opinion one of the best Red breeding bulls of the time.

43N is in the midst of creating her own legacy with a very powerful string of herd sires. Most have

gone on to do their greatness in commercial herds but her son this year by Windy created a

bit of a stir and is now heading up the Red division at Minburn Angus. This is a cow that has

Soxro 2K was one of the fi rst New Trend 22D daughters on offer and when I saw her as a calf in the summer I told Diane she was a good one. Her fi rst calf went to a commercial herd. Her second, Red D-Bar NT Design 32N was a class winner at Agribition and went on to be herd sire for Triple F. We liked

him well enough to go get him a few years later and use him til his demise.

Her third, a Pathfi nder 5L son calf went to Rocking S to become their herd sire. Then another full brother went to the big pasture. Her last calf before she was lost was 28S, also a

full sib. She too has been very productive

in her short career thus far. Her fi rst calf was 61W by Dynamo and was selected for

the Red Coat sale, but we did not get

her in in time to have her ready.Oh well!

Terms:Terms: The terms of the sale are cash or cheque, payable at par at the sale location. The right of property shall not pass until after settlement has been made; no invoicing on buyers in attendance, unless previous arrangements have been made. Every animal sells to the highest bidder and in cases of disputes, the auctioneer’s decision will be fi nal. Current exchange rates will be announced sale day. All monies are in Canadian funds.

Bidding:Bidding: Each animal will sell to the highest bidder.

Disputes:Disputes: Bidding will be reopened between the parties involved in dispute. If no further bidding is made, the buyer will be the person from whom the auctioneer accepted the last bid. The auctioneer’s decision on all disputes will be fi nal.

Announcements:Announcements: All announcements made from the auction block will take precedence over the printed matter in the catalogue. Buyers are therefore cautioned to pay close attention to such disclosures.

Breeder’s Guarantee:Breeder’s Guarantee: As this is a dispersal, all cattle sell with no further guarantee. Any known defects will be announced before the cattle is sold.

Pregnancy Information:Pregnancy Information: All serviceable age females have been pregnancy examined by an accredited veterinarian, giving an estimated length of gestation. This estimated gestation period shall be used only as a guideline to calving and is not a guarantee of actual service.

Certificate of Registration:Certificate of Registration: Each animal will carry papers issued by the Canadian Angus Association unless otherwise stated. A certifi cate of registry duly transferred will be furnished to the buyer after the payment has been made.

Health:Health: All animals in the sale have met all necessary health requirements.

The seller, facility owner and sale manager assume no liability legal or otherwise, for any accidents that occur. It is understood that OBI is acting only as a medium between buyer and seller and is not responsible for any failure on the part of either party to live up to his obligations. Neither does OBI assume any fi nancial obligations to collect or enforce collection of any monies between parties and any legal action that may in exceptional cases be taken must be between the buyer and the seller. OBI assume no responsibility for any credit extended by the seller to the buyer. The buyer must look to the seller for fulfi llment of all guarantees and representations made hereunder.
