    Please keep the video machine's guarantee card and receipt safe for warrantypurposes.

    x Read carefully through this manual to familiarize yourself with thishigh-qual ity video cassette recorder.

    x Make sure the rating of your household electricit y supply matchesthat shown on the back of the video cassette recorder.

    x Refer to this chapter and the "Initial installation" chapter to helpyou install and adjust your video cassette recorder.

    Do not ...

    ... expose the video cassette recorder to high levels of humidity andheat, to avoid the ri sk of fi re and electric shock.

    ... open the video cassette recorder. Have a qualif ied technician carry

    out repairs.... connect the video cassette recorder to the power supply if you have

    just moved it f rom a cold to warm environment. This can result incondensation inside the recorder and cause serious damage to themachine and cassettes. Wait around two hours to allow it to reachroom temperature.

    ... the recorder is placed on a steady, flat surface.

    ... you place the recorder where there is good ventilat ion all around.

    ... you clean the recorder only wit h a soft , lint-f ree cloth; do not useaggressive or alcohol-based cleaning agents.

    ... you disconnect the power supply if the recorder appears to beworking incorrectly, is making an unusual sound, has a strangesmell, has smoke emit ting from it or liquids have got inside i t. Havea qualif ied technician check the recorder.

    ... you disconnect the power supply and aerial if you wi ll not be usingthe recorder for a long period or during a thunderstorm.

    Connecting up the video cassette recorder

    Place your video

    x horizontally on a flat, steady base so that air can circulate around it for ventilation.

    x away from humidity and heat, magnetic fields, such as those from loudspeakersetc., and with no heavy objects placed on top.

    Switch off all components when connecting or disconnecting cables.

    x Unplug the aerial cable from your TV and plug it into t he"ANT. IN" socket of the video.

    Plug the short coaxial cable provided into the "ANT.OUT"socket of the video and the aerial socket of the TV.

    x Plug a RCA cable into the "RCA socket of the video andthe AV socket on the TV if available.This connection will provide best picture and sound quality.

    Ask your dealer for an appropriate cable i f you do not have one.

    Without a RCA cable , you need to follow the steps described under"If you are not using a RCA cable" (right page and page 19).

    x Make sure the rating of the household mains supply matches therating shown on the back of the video.

    Now plug in the mains lead. The display of the videoshould now light.

    x Plug a phone cable into Audio L, R jack on the rear paneland into the Audio jack on any audio amplif ier, if needed.

    Fit the batteries as shown bythe pictures in the bay.

    Setting up the video cassette recorder

    x Switch the TV on.

    x You can also start "Auto Search" in t he menu"PR Preset" "Auto Search".

    x To tune innew stations(manual tuning) and toenter stat ion names see page 16-18.

    You should see this picture the fi rsttime you switch on the TV and video.

    Choose your language.

    OK for "Auto Search!".

    "AUTO SEARCH" tunes in all the stations you can receive inyour country and ...

    ... sorts them i n an order common for your country.

    Should you w ish the stations to have the same numbers asthose used on the TV, follow the instructions in "Sorting

    programme locations" on page 18.Else . ..

    exit the basic installation function and enjoy yourvideo cassette recorder.

    x If you dont see this picture, because you dont use a RCA cable , search this picturenow (CH 52) with t he station tuning f unctions of your TV set (see its user manual).

    x In case of interference problems on CH 52, type in an othertransmission channel between 21 and 69 using t he number buttons.

    Playing back

    x Your TV and your video cassette recorder are switched on.

    x To see the picture from your video, press the stati on button on t he TV reserved forvideo input or the AV (Audio/ Video) button.

    Load the cassette by pushingit smoothly and squarely intothe cassette bay, with itswindows pointing up.

    Start playback.

    Stop playback.

    Eject the cassette.

    Fast forward or rewind thecassette f rom stop.

    x When you load a protected cassette (e.g. pre-recorded fil m,see page 13) playback starts automaticall y.

    x PLAY switches back to normal playback.

    x During still, slow or search, you dont hear the sound.

    x If the still picture is jittering, you can steady it by using the PR +/buttons.

    x You can reduce horizontal interference stripes resulting from inaccurate

    tracking (when playing tapes of poor qualit y or recorded on other machines)by using the PR +/ buttons during playback.

    x After approx. 5 minutes in still, the cassette plays back automatically.

    x NTSC PLAYBACK on PAL TV ; If you playback the tapes, which have beenrecorded on NTSC color system, on this VCR, you can watch the pictures ona PAL TV.

    x Clock / Counter / Remaining time page 12.

    x Auto Head Cleaning

    This VCR has Auto Head Cleaner. The video head will be cleanedautomatically whenever loading or unloading the tape.

    Each press of the button advances the pictureone frame.

    PLAY blinks during still.

    PLAY switches back to normal playback.

    Starting from playback you can control searchspeed in 2 steps either forwards ( ) orbackwards ( ). Press repeatedly.

    PLAY switches back to normal playback.

    Starting f rom playback you can control slowmotion speed in 6 steps (1/15, 1/10, 1/5, 1/30,1/25, 1/20, 1/15, ...). Press repeatedly.

    PLAY switches back to normal playback.

    Select INDEX + or INDEX to search forwards orbackwards.The video will now wind t o the beginning of t he firstrecording, play it for about 6 seconds then wind on to thenext one.

    When you see the recording you want , pressPLAY.

    Access the beginning of recordings in the middle of the tape using the Index + / function.

    The video cassette recorder automaticall y sets an electronic marker (index) at t he beginning ofeach recording. It is these markers which the Index + / function detects.

    Simple recording

    x The TV stations on the video have been tuned in (page 5).

    x The video is sw itched on.

    x You can either watch the picture from the video on the TV by pressing the stationbutton reserved for video input or the AV button, watch another TV station orswitch off the TV altogether.

    Load a cassette with itssafety tab in place (see page 13).

    Start your recording.

    If you wish to interruptrecording briefly - thencontinue.

    REC blinks during this period.

    Stop your recording.

    Choose the station whoseprogramme you want t orecord.

    If the programme you wish torecord is very long, double thepossible recording time with"LP" (Long Play).

    Up to eight hours with an E-240

    x Load a cassette with its safety tab in place(see page 13) and with sufficient free space forthe recording.

    x If you want to record from a source connected to your video see page 20.

    x To cance l OTR press the button (stop) more than 5 seconds.

    Normal timer recording

    x For ti mer recordings, clock, date, and stations must be set correctly.

    x Load a cassette with its safety tab in place(see page 13) and with sufficient free space for the recording.

    Call the videos "MAIN MENU",choose "Timer Program".

    Decide if you want to record"Once", "Weekly" or "Daily"...

    ... and confirm.

    If you wish to make changes:

    M ove to the position you want tochange using the / buttons.Change the setting using the PR+/- ornumber buttons.If all setti ng are ok, press or , til lyou see OK : confirm in the bottomline.

    Confirm.

    Switch your video off.

    Type in one after the other:

    x The programme locationnumber;

    x the time the broadcast starts,

    x the t ime the broadcast ends,

    x the day of the broadcast, if itis not today.

    x Select LP if you wish to makea very long recording .

    x Wait a few seconds after t yping a one-digit-number.x If you have made a mistake, move to the position you want to change

    using the / buttons and change the setting.

    x If programme timings overlap, the machine wi ll give a w arningmessage. If you dont adjust the times, the machine will record the firstprogramme completely then continue with the second one.

    x If there is no sufficient free space for the recording on the cassette thevideo switches automatically to LP for double recording capacity.

    x The recorder will eject cassettes which have the safety tab removed(page13).

    If you want to erase this programming pressbutton 0, confirm with OK.

    x The counter counts in real time f rom the point you load the cassette. This does nothave to be its beginning! The counter does not count unrecorded parts of the tape.

    x If you rewind beyond the zero position, the counter counts in negative values(e.g. 0:01:15).

    Select your language.

    Confirm.

    Press the button for about 5 seconds.Your video cant be operated now, only t imer recordings wi llbe performed. Keep your remote control i n a safe place.

    To release child lock, press the butt on again for 5 seconds.

    Dimmer

    Your video cassette recorder dims its display when sw itched to stand-bymode.

    Auto pow er off

    Your video cassette recorder switches to stand-by when no tape is playedand no station is received for more than 5 minutes.

    Use only good quality tape cassettes w ith the VHS logo.x Keep cassettes away from excessive moisture or dust, magnetic and

    electrical fields (loudspeakers and computer monitors, f or example).

    x Always wind the tape to the beginning when you have finished. Storewith the full spool at the bottom and with the cassette in its cover.

    You can protect your precious recordings from being wiped by breaking outthe safety tab on the side of the cassette (some cassettes have a slide).

    Should you wish to re-use the tape after removing the tab, cover the holewith adhesive tape.

    x On the mono VCR, you will hear the normal mono sound.

    In addition to the normal mono sound track of VHS videocassette recorders, your video machine is equipped w ith ahigh-quality Hi-Fi sound system.

    To the TV via antenna cable (if you are not using a RCA cable)

    x If you are using a RCA cable, select the AVinput on the TV to see the picture from thevideo.

    x If you are not using a RCA cable, select thebutton number on the TV reserved for videoinput to see the picture from the video.

    If you are not using a RCA cable, your video can transmit pictures and sound to the TV via thecoax aerial cable. Just t une the TV to the video's t ransmitti ng channel (factory set to UHF CH52). Tune the TV carefully to ensure the best pictures and sound.

    Once you have carried out the steps in"Connecting up the video cassette recorder"(page 4), switch on your TV.

    Press the OK button of the videos remote controllonger than 5 seconds to call the videos testpicture.

    Tune the TV to the test picture using the channelpre-set functions of your TV as described in i tsmanual.

    When you have found the test picture, store itunder the button number on your TV for videoinput.

    Press the OK button of the videos remote controlagain longer than 5 seconds to release the testpicture.

    Call the videos "MAIN MENU" choose

    "VCR Setup" then "RF Output Set".

    Type in the free channel.

    Store and exit.

    If the quality of the test picture transmitted to the TV is poor due to interference caused bya station transmitting on channel 52, you can tune the video to a different transmittingchannel. Find a free channel between 21 and 69 on your TV.

    x If the quality of the test picture transmitted to the TV is poor, fine-tuning on the TV mayhelp (refer to the TV manual).

    x Without a RCA cable , you will not get stereo sound from a TV capable of stereo sound.

    Should you wish to assemble your own film, from camcorder footage forexample, use the assembly technique for smooth edit points:

    To copy to your video fromanother video machine,connect the two machines witha cable between their RCAsockets and select asprogramme "AV" or F. AV(front sockets) using the AVbutton.

    Set the other video machine toplayback and your machine torecord.To connect a mono audio source, use

    the f ront Audio In socket marked L.To copy to another videomachine from your video,connect the two machines bymeans of their RCA sockets.

    On the other video, select it sAV input and set the machineto record.

    Switch your video to play backat the position you wantcopying to start.

    x Move the tape to theposition at which the newscene is to be added usingthe play functions (pages6/7).

    Start playback.

    Stop playback.

    Fast forward or rewind thecassette f rom stop.

    Still picture from playback.

    Each press of the buttonadvances the picture oneframe.PLAY switches back to normalplayback.

    - The mains lead is not connected to the wall socket.

    - condensation may have formed when moving the video cassette

    recorder from a cold t o a w arm room. Wait until the video (and

    cassette! ) reach room temperature.

    - Is a cassette loaded?

    - the safety tab may be missing. Cover the hole with adhesive tape

    (page 13).

    - -Are the TV stations tuned in on the video

    (page 5)?

    - Is there a recording on the video tape?

    - Use PR. / + buttons to adjust tracking if horizontal stripes appear.

    - Is the cassette of poor quality or worn out? Test with another cassette.

    - If you are not using a RCA cable, have you tuned the location for video

    input on the TV properly? pages 5/19.

    - Try a different cassette. The video head drum may need cleaning - ask

    your dealer.

    - Press (pause) several times. Adjust with the PR +/- buttons until

    you get the best picture.

    - are the batteries run down?

    - is the distance between remote control and video more than

    7 meters?

    - is there an object blocking the direct line between remote control and

    video?

    - is there a cassette already loaded? If so, the videos display will

    indicate it.

    - the cassette is already fully wound back or to the end.

    - is the clock set correctly (page 11)?

    - if no play or record function is used for about five minutes when left in

    Stop mode, the video switches its motor off to conserve the

    mechanism.

    - Your video has detected abnormal conditions. Release this mode with

    any button , your video then safely sw itches to stand-by.
