Ti and its alloys have been widely used for various industrial and medical applications because of their excellent characteristics of low density, high strength, high corrosion resistance and high biocompatibility. However, it is not easy to produce the complicated shape and precise parts because of their poor workability. Therefore, the advanced powder processing techniques such as Metal Injection Molding (MIM) are hoped to be a suitable technique for fabricating complex shaped Ti or its alloy parts with low cost. In this paper, various high performance Ti alloy materials such as Ti‐6Al‐4V added Mo or Fe or Cr have been developed by MIM process. The effect of powder type and sintering conditions on the microstructures, relative density and mechanical properties of injection molded compacts were investigated. Also the oxygen and carbon contents were checked in detail for obtaining high performance properties as same as the wrought materials. Eventually, more than 1000 MPa of strength and 15% of Elongation were achieved with MIM process.

Effect of Application of DLC Coating on the Improvement of Uniformity in Metal Powder Die Compaction
Yukinori Taniguchi* ([email protected]‐k.ac.jp), Department of Mechanical Engineering, Nara National College of Technology.
In the metal powder compaction process using closed‐die system, which applies to mass production for various metal parts, density distribution caused by frictional force on contact region between tool and compacted powder occurs inside of green compact. Such behavior often results in poor quality of sintered product, and the high frictional force during ejection causes an occurrence of scuffing or cracking of green compact. This study demonstrates that the application of DLC (Diamond Like Carbon) coating for metal powder die compaction system becomes more effective ways for the improvement of uniformity of green compact. The frictional force on die wall and the magnitude of axial density distribution of green compact were estimated in single‐action powder compressing. Conventional tool steel (SKH by JIS) die with or without DLC coating were tested for pure iron powder and stainless steel powder; these were compacted to 10mm diameter and 20mm height with density ratio of 0.85.
The ability of several die wall lubricants about the improvement of uniformity in green compact was also investigated. As a result, DLC coated die keeps consistently low frictional force during compaction and enhances density uniformity of compact, while the scuffing occurred at the late stage of densification in case of typical lubrication conditions (ex. 0.5wt% zinc stearate addition). On the other hand, die wall lubrication by paraffin wax powder was effective way to decrease wall frictional force but does not improve the density uniformity except for applying in combination with admixed lubricant. It is concluded that the application of DLC coating exhibit fine anti‐galling abilities in a viewpoint of improvement of density uniformity especially on less addition lubrication in metal powder die compaction process. Laser Forming of Tailored Blanks of High Tensile Strength Steels
Masaaki Otsu* ([email protected]‐u.ac.jp), Akira Ishii and Kazuki Takashima Kumamoto University
Reduction of car weight for saving fuel energy and improvement of safety involving increase of car weight are most important problems in automotive industry. One of the approaches to solve those contradicting demands in the same time, application of high tensile strength steels to car bodies is expanding. On the other hand, tailor welded blanks which consist of materials with different thickness, tensile strength and so on, have been remarkably applied to the car bodies to optimize material usage. In bending high tensile strength steel sheets, however, great spring back appears and bending accuracy is low by conventional bending method. Furthermore it is also difficult to bend tailor welded blanks because different material and thickness sheets are welded. In this study, tailor welded blanks with two different materials(SPCC‐SPFC980Y) were V bent by laser forming which is a bending method with thermal stress induced by rapid heating by means of laser irradiation, and it is suitable for bending of large spring back sheets since spring back is not affected. Forming conditions for SPCC part and SPFC980Y part were changed. A 50W CW YAG laser was employed with scanning velocity of 2mm/s, scan number of 10 and defocus length of 25mm. When same laser power (38W) was employed for SPCC and SPFC980Y parts, bending angle of SPCC part was greater than that of SPFC980Y part. However, when laser power was 40W for SPFC980Y part and 36W for SPCC part, the bending angle of both parts were almost same and this means constant bending angle was obtained by controlling the laser power. Constant bending angle was also gained by controlling the scanning velocity as well as the laser power. Key words: Laser Forming, High Tensile Strength Steel, Carbon Steel, Tailored Blanks, Bending

Novel characterization method for evaluating dynamic wetting on a tiny chip component device using a non‐contact position sensor during unsteady wetting process was proposed. Testing system consists of a programmable reflow profile‐heating unit and a motion sensing unit. Copper traced FR‐4 substrates with paired circle lands for each chip component terminal were used as the wetting test substrate. Standard chip capacitors and registers were used for the test. Time vs. z‐position curve was analyzed around melting point of the solder paste. The height position of the chip component decreased after solder melting. Several wetting parameters (rate and change of the vertical position of the chip component device) were determined according to the acquired time vs. z‐position curves. Dynamical vertical motion of a chip component device and steady state position were evaluated with several kinds of lead‐free solder alloys.

An Improved Method for Ultrasonic On‐line Monitoring of Temperature Distribution of Materials being Heated

Corresponding author: [email protected]
In many fields of engineering, there are growing demands for noninvasive measurements of the temperature distribution and its transient variation of a material being heated. In our previous work, an ultrasonic inverse method to determine the temperature distribution inside material was proposed and its validity was demonstrated through the experiments with metal plates being heated. In this work, an improved ultrasonic method providing fast and robust temperature measurements has been developed for practical applications such as on‐line or real‐time temperature monitoring of materials being processed at high temperatures. The method basically consists of an ultrasonic pulse‐echo measurement and an improved inverse analysis coupled with a one‐dimensional finite difference calculation. The advantage of the method is that the calculation time
is quite short and independent from the number of grids used in the finite deference model. To demonstrate the practicability of the method, temperature distributions of steel and aluminum plates are evaluated. Ultrasonic pulse‐echo measurements are then performed for the plates during heating and cooling. A change in the transit time of ultrasonic waves across the plate is continuously acquired and used to determine the temperature distribution inside the plate. The temperature distribution and its transient variation determined by the developed method almost agree with those obtained using thermocouples installed in the steel. Although some problems are remained to be overcome, the method is believed to be effective in monitoring the transient variation of the temperature distribution of materials being processed at high temperatures. Corresponding author: [email protected] Diamond‐like Carbon (DLC) has been widely accepted as an excellent tribo‐coating material acting like a high wear‐resistant solid lubricant with a low friction coefficient. The purpose of this study is to investigate the influence of the interlayer on adhesion strength between DLC film and steel substrates. First we examined the influence of oxygen partial pressure during deposition of Si‐DLC interlayer by RF plasma CVD method using Si(CH3)4 (Tetra Methyl Silane: TMS) gas. Elemental ratio of interlayer evaluated by XPS (X‐ray photoelectron spectroscopy) has remarkably changed due to the injection of oxygen gas during the deposition. However, the adhesion strength between DLC and steel substrates by scratch test were approximately constant even if the O2 partial pressure ratio is as large as 50%. Then, we deposited other DLC film whose interlayer is Cr by magnetron sputtering method and evaluated mechanical and tribological characteristics with scratch test and boll‐on‐disk test. Soldering and anisotropic conductive adhesives (ACAs) are used for assembling of devices with high‐density area‐array terminals. However, the solder bump processes are high‐cost and the interconnects of ACAs are less‐reliable. The purpose of this study is to develop the novel method replacing the conventional methods. Self‐Organization assembly method using active resin containing solder fillers, have the possibility to obtain reliable interconnects through low‐cost process. The fundamental phenomena of the Self‐Organization assembly process are movement, coalescence, and wetting of the molten fillers in the resin. The movement of the fillers is focused on this paper. In‐situ observation of the coalescence behaviour of the 40m molten fillers in the resin demonstrated irregular movement of the fillers at the velocity of several m/s. According to the numerical analysis using improved
volume fraction method, 10% degradation of interfacial energy on one side of a 40m filler, involved in elimination of the oxide film, could move the filler at the velocity of several mm/s. Key words: Electronic packaging, Self‐Organization, Solder, Wetting, Interconnects
