Pandit Upadhyaya's"life and contributioncan be a source of inspiration for the present generation".

Pandit Deendayal Upadhyaya was an Indian philosopher, economist, sociologist,

historian, journalist, and political activist. He was an ideologue and a guiding force for an

alternative model of governance and politics. He encouraged young men and women to

live a life of struggle and sacrifice in service of the nation

Deendayal Upadhyaya wanted to raise and grow India on the basis of its rich culture and

not western concepts left by the ritish at the time of their departure from the nation.

Deendayal ji!s antra of Integral Humanism # a concept which is deeply embedded in

Indian Psyche and his message of serving the very last person in the $ueue continues to

inspire us. %he philosophy of Integral Humanism advocates the simultaneous and

integrated programming of the body, mind, intellect and soul of every human being. His

philosophy of Integral Humanism, is a synthesis of the material and the spiritual & the

individual and the collective. He visuali'ed for India a decentrali'ed polity and self(reliant

economy with the village as the base. Human)ind, according to Upadhyaya, had four

hierarchically organi'ed attributes of body, mind, intellect and soul which corresponded to

four universal objectives, )ama *desire or satisfaction+, artha *wealth+, dharma *moral

duties+ and mo)sha *total liberation or !salvation!+. hile none could be ignored, dharma is

the !basic!, and mo)sha the !ultimate! objective of human)ind and society. He claimed that

the problem with both capitalist and socialist ideologies is that they only consider the

needs of body and mind, and were hence based on the materialist objectives of desire and

wealth. Upadhyaya rejected social systems in which individualism !reigned supreme!. He

also rejected communism in which individualism was !crushed! as part of a !large heartless

machine!. -ociety, according to Upadhyaya, rather than arising from a social contract

between individuals, was fully born at its inception itself as a natural living organism with

a definitive !national soul! or !ethos! and its needs of the social organism paralleled those of

    the individual./0

It is the responsibility of society to arrange for the up)eep of every childthat is born, and to provide him with education which would enable him to develop his

individuality even as he contributes to the well(being of society as a responsible member.

It is the responsibility of society again to assure every able(bodied person employment and

ade$uate leisure and every person a living. 1very civilised society fulfils these obligations

in some form or the other. In fact, these have become the main criteria of progress.

%herefore, right to a minimum living standard, education, employment and social security

and welfare will have to be accepted as fundamental rights.
