Managing Director’s Message

Dear Members,

Laguna National proudly hosted Tiger Woods for his inaugural

visit to this fine country. Golf enthusiasts around the nation

have been waiting anxiously for him to visit our great island

ever since his incredible runaway Masters victory in 1997 –

and now we can say “it has happened”. Proudly, we can

hold our heads high knowing that we served as gracious

hosts and that Tiger left with a fine perspective on both

Laguna National and Singapore as a whole.

I have had the privilege of

knowing and working with

Tiger for close to 10 years

now, even playing with

him on occasion (we hit

a few shots on the World

Classic although I won’t

tell you how I fared against

him on our diabolical hole

#3 where he hit his new

3 wood to 15 feet from

the Championship tee of

301 yards!). He was relaxed and engaging, getting ready for

his President’s Cup appearance with some practice and a

private outing. He confided in me before leaving “Bowers…

what took you so long to get me out here…I love this place”.

I just smiled and said “You are welcome back any time”.

He gave me a wink and flashed his charismatic smile and

quipped “You can count on it.”

It took a giant team effort to pull this one off. Of course

the support of our Chairman and Executive Director was

unwavering in allowing our team to make arrangements to

welcome him. The Laguna team worked huge hours in the

week leading up to the highly confidential visit. We were

happy to see so many Members get the chance to snap

a picture, grab an autograph, attend the clinic or simply

watch him play a few holes on our World Classic Course –

whether it be during his impromptu practice session on the

Wednesday or the full day visit on Thursday.

We appreciate the support of the Membership in being

understanding as to our security and operational requirements

as well. Any visit by Tiger, requires significant confidentiality

as well as control measures. To ensure we were the best

hosts possible, we put all these measures in place. I am

pleased to say we received not ONE word in complaint, with

the Membership all being understanding and supportive.

We will not soon forget the look of excitement and disbelief

on the faces of the Members and their guests as they realized

Tiger Woods had just walked past them, at the Lakes Café

and was dining in their private Members’ lounge. Well done

Laguna….you are Tiger’s first and only in Singapore.

Let us also not forget the wonderful holiday season now

upon us. A very pleasant Season’s Greetings to all of our

Members and their families. Please be on the lookout for our

Social/Recreation and Food& Beverage festive programs.

Those who make their choices and bookings early are sure

not to be disappointed.

From all of us at Laguna National Golf & Country Club and

Laguna Hospitality, we wish you a very Merry Christmas

and a Happy New Year. It would be our pleasure to see you

around the Club and greet you and your family during the

holiday season and beyond.

Warm Holiday Regards,

Patrick Bowers

Massage is considered the most ancient form of medical therapy practiced on the human being. The diverse types of massages and the numerous techniques stem from the most admired civilizations and their legendary beliefs.

There are various benefits of massages. It removes fatigue and pain, improve vision, produces good body, good sleep and enables good skin. It eliminates toxins out of the body from the skin. It stimulates circulation of the blood and soothes the nervous system. It reduces the tension in the muscles and relieves muscular pain. Systematic massage reduces the burden on the heart and thus increases its efficiency.

Medical researches have proven that the benefits of massages include pain relief, released tension, reduced anxiety, less risk of depression and temporarily decreases blood pressure and heart rate. In general, massage promotes relaxation and integral well-being. Scientifically, it is possible because massages may block pain signals to the brain; activating the parasympathetic nervous system that stimulates the release of endorphins and serotonin. This aids in preventing damage on the connective tissue and boostes the circulation of the lymph.

If you have never visited a spa to experience the wonders of massages performed by a trained therapist, this might be the perfect time to do so.

There exist over 150 types of massage therapies including the ancient forms and the modern techniques. Numerous styles of massages currently known have been widely developed from different world’s traditional sources and today are divided in several local techniques or combined between them.

Mr. Benny Hu “Hu Bin”, is a “true-blue Lagunian”. At 43, he became the Director of his own shipping business, he established way back in 1997. The business located at Shenton Way, the prime business district of Singapore. He got his Singaporean citizenship,11 years since he set foot in Singapore in 1997. His family is housed in one of the plush residences along East Coast area, the Costa Del Sol in Bayshore Road. To divert from his business routines he joined Laguna in 2009.

Wife, Sun Wei, 41, mothers Hu Hua Xin an exceptional child who have just completed his Primary School Leaving Examination (PSLE). She enjoys with her friend members the food and services of the club to wit: our restaurants offering sumptuous food varieties like in the comfort of a ‘chalet’ Singaporen style but with awe and elegance.

Witnessing his being a “true-blue Lagunian”, he invited and highly recommended his business partner Mr. Thomas Yang who joined him in Laguna in 2009.

His worthwile experiences since joining Laguna were enthralled by his breathtaking plays with our World Classic Course. He exclaimed, “ Not all clubs in Singapore have the privilege of having two complete 18-hole courses – each unique”. This is an exorbitant experience on top of his routine games of three to four times play at the Masters Course.

Mr. Hu pointed significant improvements in the club. He enjoyed the ambience of the Lakes Cafe’s extension, enjoying his all time favorites the Laksa, Fish Bee Hoon Soup and the cafe’s signature - roti prata.

His latest event is the 17th Laguna National Youth Golf Charity held on Saturday, 17 September 2011, where he manifested his philanthropy. His participation motivated him to let his son engage in golf and make it his own sport too.

Furthermore, his family and friends are very enthusiastic to join the club’s New Year’s Countdown Special the, “ Night of Glamour”.

Affirming a “true-blue Lagunian”, the very active Mr. Benny Hu.

Member Interview – Mr Thomas Yang Good things are worth sharing, in this case, a good Club is worth recommending. That’s exactly what Laguna Member; Mr Benny Hu did when he recommended Laguna to his business partner, Mr Thomas Yang.

A 47 years old business partner of a shipping firm, Mr Thomas Yang, together with wife, Mdm Zheng and their 21 year old son, Yang dong Hua, were neighbors with Mr Hu went they first came to Singapore. Now a Member of Laguna, Thomas loves his golf even more and enjoys toughing it out on the challenging World Classic.

Thomas attributed the business culture of Singapore, one of fairness and efficiency, as the main reason for his move to our sunny island. When he is not out in the marketplace, he enjoys his golf and spends time with his family.

Mr Thomas Yang was introduced to be a member of Laguna National by Mr Benny Hu himself. He bought the membership even before he learnt the art of golf. He took lessons with our golf professional Gary Quek and has loved the sport ever since. Saturdays are his golf days and is very excited about the new Online Booking System that will be in place for more efficient bookings. He usually plays at the Masters course as well just like Benny and finds the World Classic ever so challenging.

Dear Laguna National Members,

Due to the poor weather conditions over the past 1 month, our preventative maintenance programs have had to change to suit these wet conditions considering we have had over 286mm of rainfall where 13 days out of 30 received rainfall.

Considering this rainfall, our team here at the golf course maintenance

department have been busy preparing and improving the conditions of both courses, so we are able to have the golf course presented beautifully and playable at all times for our Members and their guest here at Laguna National Golf & Country Club.

With this, it is my pleasure to share with you some of the highlights of what our team has been working on over the past month and how it affects your enjoyment of our courses;

masters Course:

• Improving the presentation and the playability of the greens at the Masters Course, this has kept our team very busy with regular de-thatching, dusting and rolling of our greens. This work is able to be seen with a true roll of the ball together with an increase of ball speed.

• Re-shaping of the Men’s Blue Tee-box at hole - 2 which will assist teeing off at this great hole. Once completed, we will then move onto the ladies Tee-Box at hole - 11.

• Our team has also been busy enlarging the drop-zones at hole – 3; via carrying out these works, the golfers will be able to enjoy playing off turf full time to be able to be consistent with the shots thru the round. Once completed, we will then move onto hole - 8 and also hole - 17 drop-zones.

World Classic Course:

• Re-shaping the bunkers at holes: 1, 2, 3 & 9 which does assist to see the direction of the hole together with the lines of play; these holes should be played.

Golf Course Maintenance the lifeblood of our golf courses

10 putt & play

Page 13: Dec 2011 issue magazine

• Our team has completed verti-cutting and top-dressing with the fairways with sand to improve the fairway playing surface around the course at the World Classic Course. Via carrying out these works, we have removed a lot of thatch (Dead Organic Material) which will allow our maintenance team to lower the height of the fairways in weeks to come. These works will always be ongoing to ensure we are able to present the course to our members and their guest the way it should be.•Stairways into Bunkers on the World Classic Course were added. Our team has been working hard for the past month adding and introducing stairways into the bunkers. We have completed holes: 13, 14 & 15. This will assist in making the course friendlier and more enjoyable to our Members & their guests.

• Additional secondary drainage on the World Classic was added. Our team have installed secondary drainage on holes - 3 and 5 to assist on improving the wet area’s that are holding water which will improve the playing conditions on the course.

landscaping:

• We have introduced new plants (Frangipani Trees) along the drop-off entrance road in the planter boxes.• Our landscaping team has been busy planting wild grasses around the World Classic Course on holes: 1, 13 and 18. This will assist to define the holes of this great course and give it the character that it deserves.• Around the poolside area, we have put a lot of effort into this great relaxing location with introducing new plants and also improving the presentation

of surrounds around the poolside and restaurant’s.

Once again, this presentation would not be able to be carried out without our hard-working golf course maintenance team and with this, I would like to forward a special thanks for the hard work and support that they have provided me.

Good golfing and I do look forward to meeting you on the course in the near future together with hearing some of your feedback.

The Disciplinary Committee (DC) has arguably the toughest role in the Club. If we had our wish, it is for the DC to never have to meet, deliberate complains and worst of all, mete out disciplinary actions. Yet our DC has to meet every 2-3 months. Our survey shows most cases share a common theme.

The typical DC case is like this: Golfers in flight behind feel that the front is playing too slowly (by the way, most such DC cases revealed playing on schedule). The impatience sets in and they tee off while the flight in front is still within range or barely moving away. One of their balls lands near the golfers in front. “Fore!” is not shouted or heard. Apology is not made or considered sincere. A quarrel ensues and the golfers in front submit a complaint. The DC hears the facts of the case and offender suspended.

Like it or not, this is similar to the basic rule on the roads: if you and your car bumped into the car in front, you are in the wrong. You may argue that the driver in front stopped suddenly, but you have to bear the consequences.

In the same way, you may argue about the flight being slow, or not being able to hit long enough to reach them but the truth of a ball landing near them holds; not to mention the danger and likelihood of hurting someone with a golf ball.

Let me reprise some golden rules to prevent ugly incidents and obviating the DC:

Patience. Golf is meant to be enjoyed and not at breakneck speed. Particularly on a weekend where the flights are full and back to back, some waiting is expected. Even if the flight in front is considered slow, do not take the law into your own hands. If need be, request for the assistance of the marshal or golf operations. Most of all, be patient.

Err on the safe side. Always make sure the flight in front is completely cleared including get on their buggies after putting out. Also always assume your ball may land on a hard ground and bounce more than your usual drive distance.

Fore! Should the unforeseen – ball flying towards a golfer – happens, he should have the presence of mind to shout, “Fore!” loudly. Flight mates should always be watching out for ball flight and landing. They should help their mate shout, “Fore!”

Apologize, apologize and apologize again. Proceed forward and apologize profusely and sincerely to the golfer(s) in front. Even if the golfer in front is not gracious and rejects the apologies, eat the humble pie and remain apologetic. You cannot fight fire with fire. Speaking of fire, trying to rationalize your errant shot will not calm the situation.

Be gracious. For the affected golfer, try to be gracious and accept the apology. Give the offending golfer the benefit of the doubt that it was an unintended or unforeseen mistake.

The above reminds me of an actual incident I experienced. My flight mate drove his ball onto the next fairway towards the oncoming flight. We shouted, “Fore!” then drove up to apologize. We braced ourselves for confrontation as one of the golfers walked towards us and shouted, “Why didn’t you hit my friend?”

He added, “I’m five holes down and wished you put him down and out of my misery!” Danger aside, we all had a real good laugh. We bought drinks later and made new friends.

If all golfers are like the above, we will not need to convene the DC. And maybe even get free drinks!

Front 9 of The World ClassicThe front nine of the World Classic is unique for the amount of short par fours it has placed over the layout. There are 4 possible drivable par fours for the longer hitters (especially from the forward tees) the 1st, 5th, 6th, and the 8th and depending on the tee placement and wind direction they may be also reachable from the blue tees.

putt & play14

Page 17: Dec 2011 issue magazine

But beware; even if you drive your ball within putting distance you may not be able to get your ball close to the hole for two, as the greens on these short holes are challenging with several multi levels and tiers. The greens are also heavily bunkered, along with many inconspicuous pot bunkers and catching the wrong slope with your second can not only put you further away than you started, but leave you in a position where just getting the ball on the green becomes the objective.

Though this nine is considerably shorter THAN THE ENSUING BACK 9, only measuring 3217 yards from the blue tee’s which is 502 yards shorter than the back nine, the front nine provides you the opportunity of low scoring ON at least 4 out of the 9 holes, however severe sloping of the greens and many run off area’s featuring extended aprons can catch the unlikely golfer. Once you have played the championship length 2nd hole a very strong par 4 of 440 yards from the blue tees, which almost always plays into the wind, then the third at 270 yard par 3 from the blue tees and (only a mere 236 from the white) you will not feel like you are playing a short course.

Placement of your tee shots are crucial on this nine and quite often the prudent play would be to tee off with fairway woods hybrids and even irons, which will allow oneself the

correct angle to approach TO THR flag-stick. There are many elevated greens so it is crucial on several holes to hit a high shot into the green otherwise your ball may not finish on the putting surface. To play these holes in par is a testament to some great golf.

The nine consist of an old traditional 5 par 4’s 2 par 3’s 2 par 5’s. Andy Dye the Course architect admits to drawing some inspiration from links golf and old Tom Morris, on two holes on this nine, the first at The World Classic from (#1 from Prestwick) and the ninth at The World Classic from (#4 from St Andrews).

The experienced links golfer can certainly see how this has been achieved with many run off areas providing you an option to putt or bump or run from well off the green. If you place your ball on the wrong level of the green it is very difficult to two putt as evident in Major Championship Golf. Water Hazards are in play on 5 of the holes and seem to be placed in locations that are again not immediately obvious, but strategically placed. The front nine is a fun nine holes of golf, offering the player many different situations from the demanding to the more demanding shots in golf. STAY TUNED FOR NEXT ISSUE’S FEATURE STORY ON THE INWARD 9.

Christmas Celebrationsaround the worldIt is interesting to see how different countries celebrate Christmas.

Page 21: Dec 2011 issue magazine

FinlandIn Finland, people believe that Father Christmas (Santa Claus) lives in northern Finland called Korvatunturi, north of the Arctic Circle. Known around the world as the home of Santa, people from all over the world would send letters to him. There is even a big tourist theme park called ‘Christmas Land’, located near to the “home” of Santa.

The preparation for the three holy days of Christmas - Christmas Eve, Christmas Day and Boxing Day, is a busy period of spring cleaning. Traditional Finnish Christmas treats include rice porridge and a sweet soup made from dried fruits (plums, raisins, apples, pears, apricots and figs), and the usual Christmas treats like ham and turkey. The celebration starts on 24th December with the church service, followed by a trip to the SAUNA! Yes, Sauna. The highlight for the night, after all the presents have been opened, would be the visit to the cemeteries and grave-yards. During the holidays, Finnish final resting place lights up with candles as many families spend the holiest of nights with they beloved.

FranceChristmas in France is a festival of fine dining and merriment; where families come together for a time of good food and wine. Traditional French holiday treats include fois gras and seafood.

In France, Christmas is call ‘Noël’, and Father Christmas known as Pere Noel. Everyone has a Christmas tree,

sometimes decorated in the old way with red ribbons and real white wax candles, with lights shinning down on the French night.

germanyChristmas in Germany is a colorful event. The Germans would decorate their houses with little wooden electric candles and colored plastic pictures. Many homes will also have a replica of the Nativity, with little wooden cribs for Baby Jesus.

In Germany, Father Christmas is known as ‘Der Weihnachtsmann’. A traditional Christmas dish would be carp or goose, served on Christmas Day.

ChinaLet’s look to the Far East, to China, to see how Christmas is celebrated there. Christmas in China is traditionally celebrated by decorating their houses with beautiful paper lanterns and Christmas trees, which they call “Trees of Light,” with paper chains, paper flowers, and paper lanterns. Chinese children hang stockings and await a visit from Santa Claus, whom they call Sheng Dan Lao Ren which means “Christmas Old Man”.

Although majority of the Chinese are not Christians, and Chirstmas is not a public holiday there, the festival is still wide celebrated, especially in cosmopolitans like Shanghai and Beijing.

Chicken Biryani Biryani is typically a special occasion dish, for many reasons. This dish is particularly known for its many layers of flavors that slowly develop and meld together. So, it’s a multi step process that requires much love in many installments over a long cooking time. Also, those flavors and the aromas from the dish come from a blend of spices that are typically not used in everyday cooking and are pricier, hence adding to the special feel.

Teochew Bak Kut Teh Bak kut teh is a Chinese soup. It’s name literally translates as “meat bone tea”, and at its simplest, consists of meaty pork ribs simmered in a complex broth of herbs and spices. Bak kut teh is usually eaten with rice and is often served with Chinese loaf stick (you tiao). Soy sauce, usually light or dark soy sauce is preferred as a condiment, with which chopped chilli padi (small red chilli) and minced garlic is taken together.

Pineapple Rice with SeafoodPineapple Fried Rice is the signature dish of Thailand.

Chinese invented fried rice but I think it’s the genius of the Thais that make fried rice sinfully delicious—they concocted pineapple fried rice. Not only does it look visually appealing, the taste is simply mouthwatering and utterly appetizing. Nasi Lemak

Nasi Lemak is served in the morning as break-fast and can be eaten for lunch or dinner as well. The toppings include anchovies, sambal, hard-boiled eggs, fried fish or chicken wings. Other common toppings include roasted peanuts and cucumber slices.

The quadriceps femoris (Latin for “four-headed muscle of the femur”), also simply called the quadriceps, quadriceps extensor or quads, is a large muscle group that includes the four prevailing muscles on the front of the thigh. It is the great extensor muscle of the knee, forming a large fleshy mass which covers the front and sides of the femur. It is the strongest and leanest muscle in the human body. All four quadriceps are powerful extensors of the knee joint. They are crucial for walking, running, jumping and squatting.

It is important to keep your quadriceps strong to allow for the highest level of flexibility as well as to prevent injury. There are exercises and stretches helpful in keeping quadriceps strong and limber. Taking care of your quadriceps not only helps to guard against muscle injuries but can also help to support the knee joint and protect it from injury. Keep in mind, however, that it is always a good idea to check with your doctor before beginning a new exercise or stretching program.

Approach our helpful gym instructors for more information and techniques today!

quadriceps: leg Extentions For this exercise you will need to use a leg extension machine. First choose your weight and sit on the machine with your legs under the pad (feet pointed forward) and the hands holding the sidebars. This will be your starting position.

tip: You will need to adjust the pad so that it falls on top of your lower leg (just above your feet). Make sure that your legs form a 90-degree angle between the lower and upper leg. If the angle is less than 90-degrees then that means the knee is over the toes, which in turn creates undue stress at the knee joint. If the machine is designed that way, either look for another machine or just make sure that when you start executing the exercise you stop going down once you hit the 90-degree angle.

Using your quadriceps, extend your legs to the maximum as you exhale. Ensure that the rest of your body remains stationary on the seat. Pause a second in the contracted position.

Slowly lower the weight back to the original position as you inhale ensuring that you do not go past the 90-degree angle limit. Repeat this action for the recommended amount of times.

variations:You can use various foot positions in order to maximize stimulation of certain thigh areas. You can perform the movement unilaterally one leg at a time.

stretches:After your workout, your cool down stretch is very important. A good cool down will ensure your muscles recover well for your next workout and keep chances of injury low.

Focus on your quad stretches for longer in the cool down. You should hold all stretches for at least 10 seconds with no bouncing at all.

standing quadriceps stretch Tip – Keep your knees parallel; increase the stretch by pushing your hips slightly forward and most importantly, keep your back straight.

Stand near a stationary object; hold on it for balance if necessary.

Keep your back straight throughout; flex your right foot towards your bottom.

Use your right hand to hold the top of the foot and assist it all the way until your heel is touching your bottom. Feel the stretch at the front of your right thigh. Repeat with your left leg.

Laguna National Golf and Country Club was approached to help prepare the players. The World Classic was a perfect setting for the team to hone their short games around the greens. After the National Team’s recent

success and 1st placing at the Putra Cup, their moral was high during their visit and the Head Coach feels confident of another great international result for Singapore.

In response to my question as to why the team were so enthusiastic to use the World Classic as a practice venue, Brad replied, “The World Classic gives us a huge variety of shots to practice. The course is in fantastic condition and it gives our players a great challenge, which is truly beneficial for all the team”. He also mentioned that the World Classic is a course that demands excellence, if you put some pin positions in some tricky positions it sharpens up the team’s focus, as the greens are very demanding.

I spoke with some of the team members who absolutely loved the World Classic. They enjoyed the challenge and diversity of the layout and all agreed that playing there would not only improve their skills but made their practice fun. They were also particularly impressed with the condition of the course and quality of the greens and maintenance.

I was able to follow the group for several holes giving them my personal view of how to manage the course. I was quite impressed at the level of play from the entire squad.

We at Laguna National Golf and Country Club wish the National Team good luck and every success at the Sea Games, and look forward to seeing them again in the near future.

Tiger Woods, considered by most golf aficionados to be the greatest player of not only this generation but perhaps all time, finally visited Singapore and made his debut on Laguna’s World Classic Course. On his way to the President’s Cup and eager to gain some practice time, Tiger

was able to combine a small private outing with a couple of days workout at Laguna National. Laguna National’s Managing Director, Patrick Bowers commenting on the exclusive visit, took the whole thing in stride as he worked alongside Tiger and his Agent/Manager Mark Steinberg for close to 10 years prior to joining Laguna…”Tiger is the type of person who is intensely private, but when he relaxes, the people really see who he is. He needed to feel comfortable that whatever club he visited in Singapore would be capable of handling the scope and co-ordination that goes with such a visit. Our team stepped up and was able to partner with our friends at Marina Bay Sands to deliver this….and Tiger knew that would be the case and as such was very comfortable coming here”.

Tiger Woods took the opportunity for a practice round on Wednesday with his new caddy on the bag, a private golf outing on Thursday and an intimate, energetic and engaging private clinic. In fact, Tiger called all the fans past the carefully arranged fencing to ensure they got up close and personal to watch and hear him.

Tiger also accepted Honorary Membership at Laguna National Golf &Country Club and the World Classic Course from Chairman Peter Kwee.

The Club Championships 2011It was my pleasure to be involved in the Club Championships in 2011. Our staff worked hard this year to make the Club Championships a little different from previous years, which I believe was a great success. We hope this trend will gather momentum and install further pride into future club championships. TEXT BY ANDREW WELSFORD

We displayed the Trophies on the first and tenth tees during the first and second rounds of the championships, hoping to motivate the participants further. We designed a

championship quality scorecard and provided players with pin sheets for each round. Ms Chua and I were on site wishing the players good luck as they teed off.

We had a total of 84 members participating across all four divisions – Ladies’ Open; Novice Cup; Intermediate; and Men’s Open. For the first time in three years, in the true spirit of a Club championship, the rounds were played over both courses, the Masters and the World Classic. This also made for a more interesting tournament where many changes at the top of the leader board were possible.

The Ladies’ Open and Intermediate divisions were played over three rounds, two on the Masters and one on the World Classic. We made sure all divisions finished the final round together on Sunday. Thankfully the rain stayed away and we were able to complete the stroke Championships in all divisions.

Throughout the event we witnessed players making big swings on the leader board, as many players fell victim to the World Classic and it’s perilous bunkers. Notably, a former Club Champion scored a 14 on the 15th hole.

We had four new champions this year. Grace Chew took out the Ladies championship. She was in the lead from the first round. She fired a solid final round on the Masters course to wrap up her first championship.

Albert Ng was able to take the trophy for the Novice Cup by a large margin of 10 strokes.

Ong Seng Lee engaged the help of one our Teaching Pros, Dino Kwek, a few days before the final round, which I’m sure helped him win by a margin of 15 strokes.

Bryan Lim was the winner in the Men’s division, by a margin of 9 strokes. Even though Bryan previously won the match play championship, this was his first club championship victory.

We had an estimated ? millimeters of rain over the two-week period and it was due credit to our Head of Agronomy Brad Leahey and his team, for getting the course in such splendid and dry conditions for the 4 rounds. The greens were running at a speed of 9.5 on the Masters course 8.5 on the World Classic.

I would like to congratulate all the winners on their victories, but most importantly I would like to thank each and every member who participated in the championships for making this years event such a success. Finally, thank you to all the Laguna staff that worked so hard to raise the bar. Looking forward to next year!

Laguna National Golf and Country Club proudly presented Chilling Halloween Night on 29 October 2011, Saturday, at the Pebble

Beach Café. More than 120 Members and guests turn up; fully dress in the wackiest of costumes. It was an eventful night filled with haunted caves and “Bloody Cocktails”, wicked fun for the whole family.

Held at the Pebble Beach Café this year, the event was a resounding success, with adults and children all dressed up in their favorite monster, film character or fictional hero. The event kick started with a good ol’ trick or treating for the young ones. Excitement was high, especially for the little tots as they go around the Club in search of the many candy distribution outlets. The smiles on their faces were only match by the load full of candies in their bags as they return to their parents after a fruitful “harvest”.

Video games came alive as teams of 4 (2 adults and 2 children) played a live size version of the poplar game Rockband, lip syncing and strumming their air guitars to classic rock anthems. And what is a Halloween party without a haunted house or a haunted cave, as is the case for the night. Doe eyed younglings were treated to a time of scare as they entered the specially designed Laguna haunted cave, all in the spirit of good Halloween fun!

The night also featured a variety of delicious treats, thanks to the creativity of the Laguna’s chefs. All time favorites like Beef Meatballs, Wild Mushroom Salad, Buffalo Wings and Cheese Cake were given the Halloween spin and transformed into “bloody” treats like Guts & Eyeballs, wild Demon Horn Salad, Spooky Spiced Chick and Spider Web Cheese Cake, The night ended with recognitions awarded to the adults and children with the nights scariest and most creative costumes. All in all, a another suceess event brought to you by Laguna National Golf and Country Club.

Laguna National Golf and Country Club was proud to host the Canon “Valued Partners Golf Day 2011” on October 18. 124 golfers took up the challenge on the World Classic golf course, putting their skills to the ultimate test on one of the toughest set of 18 holes. With the ultimate Hole-in-one prize, a Bentley Continental Flying Spur, up for grabs, the heat was on right from the get-go.

Like the masterpieces from the great maestros of the Renaissance, the World Classic personifies true greatness in the golfing fraternity. To conquer the 18 specially designed holes is a true testimony to ones excellence in his game. The brainchildren of Laguna’s Executive Director Mr Peter Kwee, the World Classic, deem as Asia’s toughest test, is one of a kind, blending beautiful breathtaking landscape with back breaking challenges hidden at every corner.

After battling it out on the World Classic all day, the guests were treated to a much deserved “Brazilian carnival” at the Laguna’s Eagle ballroom, filled with all the samba and soul of Rio De Janeiro. The excitement reaches a high when the crème of the day were announced and celebrated in a prize presentation.

A day on the World Classic is one no golfer can ever forget and one can be sure that the Partners of Canon will be sharing their story for a long time to come. A story of when man took on a Classic.
