DFE Standards

This Help Card shows you how School PUPIL TRACKER can help teachers explore the DFE Standards

The DFE has published statutory guidance on the standards needed to be met by children at the end of Key

Stage 1 and Key Stage 2. For the academic year 2016‐2017, these are the Interim Standards.

School PUPIL TRACKER has introduced a menu to support schools and keep them up‐to‐date with the Interim

Section 1: Overview of the DFE Interim Standards

The DFE has published statutory guidance on what children should achieve at the end of Key Stage 1 and Key

Stage 2 in order to meet the expected standard.

Standards.


Teachers in Year 2 and Year 6 are expected to judge whether each pupil has met the expected standards by

judging pupil attainment. For example, in Year 2 Reading, a teacher must make judgements about whether a

child is Working at Standard, Working at Greater Depth within the Standard or Working Towards the

Standard (amongst other categories).

Each of the Standards, such as Working at Standard shown in blue above, has a list of expected achievements

(as shown below for KS1 Reading). In order to meet the Working at Standard, the child must achieve all the

objectives in the list.


Teachers in Year 2 and Year 6 must decide which standard band a child sits in.

The tables below show you the full range of standard bands these judgements must be made from.

Section 2: What are the EXS Objectives?

The DFE has published the list of objectives for each expected standard ‐ for example, the list below shows all

the objectives a child must achieve in order to meet the expected standard at the end of Key Stage 1 in

reading:

School PUPIL TRACKER has worked with schools and educational experts to link the list of DFE Standards

directly to the National Curriculum objectives.

The objectives are all labelled with EXS to show they are part of the DFE Standard. A child must achieve all the

EXS Objectives in order to satisfy the DFE's expectation. The EXS Objectives are an integrated part of the

records on School PUPIL TRACKER ‐ so this means teachers can work towards them and record pupil progress

towards the standards through the year as part of their Detailed Tracking without adding to their workload.

The EXS Objectives are an integrated part of the records on School PUPIL TRACKER ‐ so this means teachers

can work towards them and record pupil progress towards the standards through the year as part of their

Detailed Tracking.

You may also upload scans of pupil's work or

photographs of pupil actions or add commentaries

as evidence to your judgements.

Section 3: Tools to see which children are meeting the Standards

Teachers can record which EXS Objectives pupils have achieved over time (please see Section 2 above).

Once this information is being recorded, SPTO will help to give you a range of information to support you in

making decisions about pupil attainment and targeted support.

Objective Analysis Tool [OAT]

You may use the OAT to view a quick summary of pupil attainment of the EXS Objectives. Click on

and then use one of the OAT buttons shown below:

This will give you access to the OAT [Objective Analysis Tool] which will show a visual summary of how many

EXS Objectives have been achieved by your pupils (as shown below).


The OAT EXS column gives a quick summary for each pupil to show how many of the EXS Objectives they have

achieved. Scrolling to the right of the OAT also gives the teacher further guidance on which DFE Standard a

child is currently estimated to be meeting.

School PUPIL TRACKER looks at the EXS Objectives recorded for each child as well as their current saved

Golden Code in the SHORT TERM grid and makes an estimation of which DFE Standard a child is meeting.

For example, in the OAT shown above, the first child has achieved all the EXS Objectives, many at Greater

Depth. This is combined with the SHORT TERM judgement saved by the teacher of Y2S #3 to form a judgement

of GDS [Greater Depth Standard] as there is evidence the child has met all the EXS Objectives and there is also

evidence that this child is working at Greater Depth.

This is an estimated standard to support a teacher in making the final decisions about a child.


Reports to support teacher judgements

You may view a quick summary of the estimated standards pupils are currently working at.

Click on and then use the button shown below to view a report:

This will create a Word document listing all the pupils in your search and their current estimated standard

band (as shown below):

The report also includes detailed information to illustrate how each current estimated standard band has been

calculated (as shown below for reading):


Reports to show gaps in EXS Objective achievement

You may view a quick summary of which pupils have achieved which EXS Objectives.

Click on and then use the buttons shown below to view a report:

This will create a Word document listing all EXS Objectives and all the pupils in your search to show whether

they have achieved the objectives (A) or are working at Greater Depth (+) ‐ as shown in the example below:

This allows a teacher to quickly view which children need to focus on learning gaps in the EXS Objectives in

order to target them for future development.


Section 5: Moderation Reports

You may view a Moderation Report for every pupil to see supportive evidence on pupil judgements.

Click on and then use the drop‐downs shown below to create a report:

This will create a Word document for a child that draws together any uploaded evidence (such as scanned

work or photographs) as well as related EXS Objective judgements to illustrate how a pupil has (or has not)

met the DFE Standard. The report is organised to exactly match the DFE Standard lists.


Section 6: Reporting judgements to your Local Authority and the DFE

Under the new curriculum arrangements, Year 2 and Year 6 teachers must make judgements about each child

in their class to decide which DFE standard band a pupil is working at. To do this, Year 2 and Year 6 teachers

will need to follow the Interim Standards guidance as set out by the DFE. Please see Section 1 for further

information.

Using School PUPIL TRACKER to help you

1. Keep records of pupil attainment

Look through Sections 2 to 5 in this guide to see how School PUPIL TRACKER has tools to support a teacher in

recording pupil achievements, and in particular tracking which pupils have met the EXS Objectives in order to

see which children are meeting the EXS Standard [i.e. the expected standard].

Section 3 in this guide explains how School PUPIL TRACKER can estimate which DFE standard band a pupil has

met.

Section 5 in this guide explains how School PUPIL TRACKER can create Moderation Reports to support

teachers in illustrating evidence that has been built up for each child.

Using the tools and records in place, you can maintain detailed records of each pupil in your class or group.

2. Decide End of Year pupil official judgements

Section 3 in this guide explains how School PUPIL TRACKER can estimate which DFE standard band a pupil has

met. This will provide a word report summarising the estimated standard each child has met.

Download this report and check it through carefully.

IMPORTANT: The final responsibility for deciding whether a child has or has not met a standard is with the

school and the teacher. The Estimated Standard judgement is a feature to guide you ‐ you must amend and

adjust the Estimated Standards to fit your judgement of a child before these are reported to the DFE or your

Local Authority.

Make changes to the grid as your professional judgement sees fit.


3. Office admin staff record your Teacher Assessments in your MIS

Once you have checked the grid in step 2 above, and made appropriate changes, pass the grid of pupil names

and standard judgments to the office admin staff in charge of your data transfer to the Local Authority or the

DFE.

Your office admin staff will fill in the data grid on your MIS and transfer this information to the Local Authority

or the DFE. Your office admin staff must speak to your MIS support for instructions on how to enter the KS1

and KS2 Teacher Assessments in to your MIS and how these will be securely transferred.

School PUPIL TRACKER does not provide a CTF or other file for data transfer for Key Stage 1 and Key Stage 2

Teacher Assessments ‐ you must follow the guidance above.

Your office admin staff will then be able to import the Official Teacher Assessment judgements your school

has made back into School PUPIL TRACKER using a CTF.
