Mall hit with third car theft claim

    ILLANA FRANTZ

    ANOTHERvehicle has allegedly been stolen

from the parking lot at Somerset Mall.

This is the third such claim DistrictMail

is reporting on this year. In the first, on 3

May, a womans white Toyota Corolla was

not in the moms and tots parking bay at

    entrance 1 when she returned.

The second incident involved a mall em-

ployeewhodparkedhis car in the staff park-

ing at the back of the centre. When he re-

turned at 15:30 on 24 May, his white Nissan

Sentra was nowhere to be found.

    Last week Macassar resident Grant

Josephs became the latest victim. Josephs,

who is also a mall employee, says he parked

his car as usual, near entrance 1, onTuesday

14 August. When he returned that evening

at 18:30, the parking space was empty, he

says. I alerted the security and wanted to

view the footage, just to check round about

what time my car was stolen.

    Butthesecuritymanagertoldmethat the

centre manager had already gone home, so

I should come back the next day.

Josephs, who took the car over from his

    father,whodied ayear andahalf ago, claims

    oneof thesecurityofficerssaid,Itsnotsuch

    a serious crime.

He then attempted to speak to mall man-

agement the next day, but no onewas availa-

ble to see him, he says.

    Imveryupset aboutwhathappened, and

everyones sluggishness. I now have to rely

on public transport to get around. Its espe-

cially stressful as I have to attend training

    month.

    MandyBellamy, generalmanager of Som-

erset Mall, says she cannot confirm the inci-

    dent. UnfortunatelySomersetMalldoesnot

have CCTV footage of the particular area.

She claims theallegation that the security

guard had been offhandwas unfounded, and

says the mall views such crimes in a very

    serious light.

The matter has been handed over to the

    police.

    NIKITA SYLVESTER

    PARELValleiHighSchool inSomer-

set West has been given some seri-

ous insight into the pursuit of excel-

lence, thanks to a research project

undertaken there by a group of stu-

    dents from the USA.

The eight students who are do-

ing their executive masters in lead-

ership at the McDonough School of

    Business, part of Georgetown Uni-

    versity in Washington DC identi-

fied Parel Vallei High School for

    their research assignment. The

project was to serve as the global

    component they needed to complete

    their course.

    The students visited the school

from 14 to 17 July to conduct their

    research and engagewith the pupils

    andstaff.Thegroupwasdivided into

two teams, each presented with a

    scenario that the school thought

would be valuable to its educational

    mission.

    The first scenario involved the

search for the perfect Parel Vallei

    principal.

    Withtheschools incumbentprin-

    cipal, Ettienne Gouws, retiring in

2014, the school agreed it would be

beneficial to compile a detailed pro-

file of their expectations for his

    successor.

Using our various skills, we en-

    deavoured to understand the com-

munity and the school, says Alton

Davis, one of the Georgetown stu-

dents who worked on the headmas-

    ter project.

    Their researchmethods included

    surveys containing diverse ques-

tions. These surveyswere sent to all

    pupils, staff and parents.

    Those polled highlighted a

number of aspects they deemed im-

    portant in a principal, including:

    strong leadership, communication,

    and morals; sound management

    principles; andabelief inwhatParel

    Vallei stands for.

To validate the survey the team

    spoke toasmanypupils,parentsand

staff as they could to create a clear

picture of what the schools head-

    master means to them.

    The second student team delved

into a a more complex and strategic

    scenario, looking into how the

    school could maintain academic ex-

    cellence while integrating pupils

and staff in an environment of

    changing diversity and scope.

    We researched other schools

that in the past had also faced prob-

lems such as this, and looked at how

    they managed to succeed, says

    Georgetown student Kim Tobar.

The second team held direct dis-

cussions with faculty staff and pu-

    pils to establish long-term strategic

    goals. Theschoolhas takenaproac-

    tive stand in promoting diversity,

    withregards to the integrationofpu-

    pils from poor communities, Tobar

    elaborates.

To be successful, the team feels

that the school needs to promote

what it is good at its fine academic

    offering, for example.

    This needs to be emphasised.

    Their strengthsneedtobe leveraged

    andotherareas improved, the team

    says,addingthat theintegrationand

    expansion offer a great opportunity

for the school to excel even further

    than it has.

    The Georgetown students say

theyare in aweat howgreat a school

Parel Vallei is, calling the people

who make up its ranks articulate,

    thoughtful, engaged, polite, respect-

    ful and well-disciplined.

A grateful Gouws says the valua-

    ble information and positive re-

    search presented to Parel Vallei

High School by the students will be

    of tremendous assistance to the

    school in its future endeavours.

    Bless you, Mervin!

IF you are like me, and most

    AndifyouliveinGordonsBay,

    you probably find yourself doing

    that on a daily basis.

But how often do we actually

take the time to appreciate the

people who have gone out of their

way to help us and make a differ-

ence in our lives? When I sit down

and think of how many people

have helpedme out in some small

    waysince Imovedhere fouryears

ago, it becomes quite a long list.

    Auntie Gay and Colleen (Second-

But today I amgoing to take the

time to acknowledge one of those

many, one who has never turned

    his back on helpingme andmany

    others in my situation, without

even thinking twice. This man is

    Mervin Steer.

About two years ago I discov-

ered we had a dump site on Sir

Lowrys Pass, and being very pas-

    sionate about recycling, I decided

to check it out. I was amazed at

    howmuchgarbage this little town

puts out, and how careless many

are when it comes to recycling.

    I started volunteering weekly

to feel like Iwas doingmypart for

    theenvironment.Thenanorgani-

sation was in need of stationery

    donations.Mervin toldme to take

    asmuchas Icould for thechildren

    in need without even thinking

twice, allowing me to make my

    contribution to the people whod

helped me out when my son was

    going through a difficult time.

    Inoticedhowmanytoyswerebe-

    ing dumped, and again asked

Mervin if I could perhaps donate

some, aswell as a few pieces of fur-

niture and building materials, to a

few daycares that had also been

    very supportive during a trying

    time.Mervinwasmorethanhappy.

When he discovered that I had

    foundsuchjoyinthegiftofgiving,

he suggested that instead of sell-

    ing itemsneededby the less fortu-

nate, we could donate them. I was

    so happy!

    His company, called Shine the

    Way, has helped three orphan-

    ages, three daycare facilities, a

    community centre, a shelter

(which, by the way, could really

    use akitchen cupboard) aswell as

    many people who cant afford

    items brand new.

    Its amazingwhatpeople throw

    to thank thisman, adevoutChris-

rock and a fountain of knowledge

    inmy life, fornotpullingoutacal-

    culator to consider how much

money he might lose, but instead

allowing me to enjoy the gift of

    giving other peoples things.

He is an amazing man, and I

hope he continues to contract at

this site for the City of Cape Town

formany years to come so that he

may continue to bless those of us

in need without a heavy heart.

PARENTS want the best schooling envi-

ronment for their children one that nur-

tures their strengths, considers their na-

ture, stretches their intellect, hones their

    concentration, identifies their interests

and guides them gently towards success.

If this resonates with you, you may

    groups (ages 36, 69 and 912), mirroring

a family situation where the young child

observes and learns from the older child

without feeling pressured, and the older

child gets the rewarding learning oppor-

cian. In 2010, Nics wife was offered the

opportunity to move to Cape Town during the height of soccer fever, and they grabbed

the chance with both hands. He soon became the regular musician booked for many

of the pubs in the area, while also providing music at private events and many smaller

pubs in the Cape TownCBD. Nic will bring his vibrant personality to Somerset tomorrow

    FINANCIAL COLUMN

    Beware the recency bias

RECENCY bias refers to an inves-

    torsbehaviourintakinginvestment

action based on themost recent data

or trend rather than putting current

    situations into their historical

    perspective.

    Theinvestmentwarningthatpast

performance should not be taken as

    an indication of future performance

is based on this well-documented in-

    vestor behavioural error.

But following this advice is often

    easier said than done.

    The graph below illustrates the

    relative performance of the major

stock markets compared to that of

the MSCI World Index expressed in

    localcurrency.Asyoucansee,South

    Africa and Asia ex-Japans relative

    performance since 2002 is literally

    off the chartsversus themajordevel-

    oped markets.

    Investors recency bias could ex-

    plain why investors continue to

drive our stockmarket higher in the

    face of demanding valuations rela-

    tive to global peer companies.

Investors will do well to remem-

ber that markets are like elastic

bands, which stretch until a point

    and then stretch no more.

    Fridays Lonmin-motivated sell-

off by foreigners and the subsequent

fall of the rand should be a reminder

to local investors that our market is

    also not bullet-proof.

Applewood pupils sail to the stars

    FOR their annual FET (further

    education and training) trip

this year, the Grade 6 class of

    Applewood Preparatory set off

    for Mossel Bay.

They arrived at the Dias mu-

seum and boarded a replica of

    the ship Bartolomeu Dias used

    to sail around the southernmost

tip of Africa in 1488. The replica

    was sailed toMosselBay to com-

    memorate the 500th anniversa-

ry of his voyage in 1988.

The pupils also got to see the

milkwood tree that Dias and his

    crew used to leavemessages for

    other sailors.

The group then headed to the

    Karoo National Park, where it

is tradition to swim in the icy

    water beneath the waterfall.

Part of their visit included an

    overnight stay at Grantham

    House close to Frasenburg, and

a walk on the fossil trail there.

    The children were privileged to

see a Verreauxs eagle nest dur-

    ing their stay.

    Thereafter, they left for Suth-

    erland, where they stopped at

    the South African Astronomi-

people lived long ago, and to learn about the inventions they made

tomake their lives easier. At the planetarium the pupils learned about

the Zeiss Machine, which projects about 7 600 stars, the sun, moon

and five planets onto a dome-shaped screen that spans 59 feet.
