Діла милосердя щодо душі слід чинити як індивідуально – у щоденному спілкуванні з ближніми, так і на рівні загальнонаціональної політики, яка повинна дбати про просвіту й ду-ховний розвиток народу, передусім молодого покоління. Політики, які зосереджують свою увагу лише на досягненні економічного поступу та матеріального добробуту народу, занедбую-чи його культурні й духовні прагнення, не вико-нають свого обов’язку щодо суспільства й не матимуть морального права називатися його провідниками. У сфері духу нам іще треба ба-гато що зробити! Адже після десятиліть тоталі-тарного комуністичного режиму в нашому на-роді далі простежуються розмитість ціннісних понять, моральний релятивізм і схильність до компромісів зі злом у різних його іпостасях. У цих обставинах нам так потрібні мужні свідки Христового Євангелія, які щоденною муравли-ною працею будуть утверджуватимуть справе-дливість і правду в нашому народі, поширюва-тимуть просвіту і дбатимуть про розвиток куль-тури. Без них жоден матеріальний добробут не принесе тривалого щастя і справжнього посту-пу. (продовження буде… )

forgive our neighbors their transgressions and weaknesses for this will promote inner peace in our relationships and will secure lasting joy in our hearts.

Acts of mercy should be performed both individually (in daily communications with others) and on the level of national policy which should care for the education and spir-itual development of a nation, primarily of its youth. Politicians who focus only on economic progress and the material welfare of its peo-ple, neglecting its cultural and spiritual aspira-tions will not fulfill their duty to society and will have no moral right to be called its leaders. We still have very much to do in the spiritual sphere! Indeed, after decades of a totalitarian communist regime in our nation, concepts of values are blurred and moral relativism pre-vails as does a tendency to compromise with evil in its various guises. In these circum-stances we very much need courageous wit-nesses of Christ’s Gospel, who will work very hard in order to establish justice and right-eousness among our people, who will propa-gate education and care for the development of culture. Without this no material wealth will ever bring lasting happiness and true ad-vancement. (to be continued……)

церковному подвір’ї).

26-th of June our parish will be cele-brating the Feast of the Nativity of St. John the Baptist. First we will pray together at the 9:30 Liturgy and at 4:00 pm we will gather on our church grounds for our traditional par-ish picnic.

ПОСЛАННЯ БЛАЖЕННІШОГО СВЯТОСЛА-ВА ДО ДУХОВЕНСТВА І ВІРНИХ УГКЦ ТА

ВСІХ ЛЮДЕЙ ДОБРОЇ ВОЛІ З НАГОДИ РО-КУ БОЖОГО МИЛОСЕРДЯ

(продовження з минулого тижня)

Нехай кожен греко-католик, кожна наша громада відкриють для себе ці моральні й соціальні «периферії», які часто є коло нас, і нехай вирушать туди, щоб занести стражден-ним братам і сестрам нашу (а краще сказати – Божу) допомогу, утіху й підтримку. Не забу-ваймо, що у надвечір’ї нашого життя ми буде-мо суджені щодо нашої любові до ближнього і що від наслідку цього суду залежить наша вічність, залежить остаточний вирок: або «Прийдіть, благословенні, візьміть у спадок Царство, приготоване вам від сотворення сві-ту», або «Ідіть від Мене геть, прокляті, у во-гонь вічний, приготований дияволові та його ангелам!» (пор. Мт. 25).

Проте милосердя стосується не лише тілесних чи матеріальних потреб. Не менш важливими є діла милосердя в духовній сфе-рі. Навернути грішника з дороги беззаконня, вказати ближньому шлях до Бога, дати мудру пораду в сумнівах, підтримати у скорботі, на-вчити в невіданні – усе це не менш важливе, ніж окраєць хліба для голодного чи склянка води для спраглого.

Серед діл милосердя щодо душі особ-ливу увагу належить звернути на ті, що пов’я-зані з прощенням. Справді, немає більшого дарунку нашому ближньому, ніж прощення, яке ми можемо уділити йому у відповідь на завдану нам кривду чи образу. Скількох конф-ліктів, напружень чи навіть трагедій між чле-нами родини, друзями, знайомими чи сусіда-ми можна було б уникнути, якби люди були готові сказати одне одному ці прості й такі чарівні слова: «Прощаю і прошу вибачення». Пам’ятаймо, що прощення – це не вияв слаб-кості, а доказ сили. Тільки морально сильна особистість здатна просити прощення й про-бачати своїм кривдникам і бажати їм добра. Господь у своєму милосерді прощає нам усі гріхи й прощає завжди, тож і ми, що молимо-ся: «Прости нам провини наші, як і ми проща-

PASTORAL LETTER ON THE OCCASION OF THE YEAR OF GOD’S

MERCY (continued from last week)

May every Greek Catholic and each of our communities discover the proper moral and so-cial “periphery” that is often alongside of us and may each of us bring our suffering brothers and sisters our (or rather – God’s) help, comfort and support. Let us not forget that in the twilight of our lives we will be judged on our love for our neighbor and that the final verdict of this judge-ment will decide our eternity: “Come, ye blessed, partake of the inheritance that the kingdom pre-pared for you from the creation of the world “, or “Depart from me, you cursed, into the eternal fire prepared for the devil and his angels.” (Matthew 25)

But charity addresses not only physical or material needs. Equally important are the works of charity in the spiritual realm. To convert the sinner who is on the road of lawlessness, to point to the path to God, to give wise counsel to those in doubt, to support those who mourn, to teach those who are in the dark – all of this is in no way less important than a loaf of bread to the hungry or a glass of water for someone who is thirsty.

Among the works of mercy of the soul it is befitting to pay particular attention to forgiveness. Truly there is no better gift that we can give our neighbor than forgiveness which we can give him or her as an answer to the injustice or insult that we have suffered. An infinite number of conflicts, tensions and even tragedies could be avoided among family members, friends, acquaintances or neighbors if people were willing to tell each other those simple and magic words: “I forgive you and ask your forgiveness!” Let us remember that forgiveness is not an expression of weak-ness but proof of strength. Only a morally strong individual is capable of asking for forgiveness and capable of forgiving their offenders wishing them well. Our Lord, in all of His mercy, always forgives us all of our sins and so we pray: For-give us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us” – and we must be ready to

Instead of ‘Indeed it is fitting’: My soul, extol the most dear Jesus, our Loving Lord. With one accord let us the faithful extol the Word of God, ineffably become man for us from the Holy Vir-gin. In his ineffable wisdom he came from God to restore Adam who was mortally felled by the serpent’s sting.

one to come and take part in this service.

A LETTER FROM UKRAINE

Dear parishioners of St. John’s, I received your money this morning – eight one hundred dollar bills, have ex-changed them for hryvni and, as promised, have started distributing this money to the needy. So far two men have received 250 hryvni each, from the “generous people at St. John’s parish in Newark who are concerned about them.” This is what I said to Serhiy, who is a recovering alcoholic and for the last 2 years and 7 months hasn’t touched a drop of alcohol. He expressed sincere gratitude for this unexpected joy and then gave me a hug and said “Now I am sure there is a God!” Petro, one of the security guards at Karitas in Drohobych was very happy with his 250 hryvni, for he barely survives on his meager salary, which is often delayed be-cause Karitas doesn’t have the money to pay its employees wages. Tomorrow I plan to give 250 hryvni to a maid who told me yesterday that she has nothing left over for her salary and that it is very difficult for six people to live in two rooms. I will also give 250 hryvni a piece to Daria, Yaroslava, Anya, Luba, Oksana, Myroslava and to two Marias, who are at the bazaar day-in, day-out with their milk, cheese, eggs and sour cream, rain or shine, sleet, snow, hot or cold weather. I will also be giving your gifts to two Hanyas, Mykhaj;yna and Lyuda at the other side of the ba-zaar. On Saturday I will bring the 250 hryvni to recovering alcoholics who work very hard but are very poor. On Monday I will visit 23 mentally and physically handicapped young people and will also visit Oleh, Bohdan, Sasha, Misha, Mykola, Volodya and Lyuda from the organization of “Our House” which helps the homeless. There will also be enough money for a single mother, an elderly woman who tends to her sick husband, for a young man who just got married and they have noth-ing… and for others. ЛИСТ З УКРАЇНИ!

Дорогі парафіяни церкви св. Івана Хрестителя в Нюарку! Отримав сьогодні рано гроші – 8 ($100) і вже це виміняв на гривні і так, як обіцяв,

почав роздавати ці гроші людям в потребі. Покищо 2 чоловіки одержали по 250 гривнів від "щедрих людей з парафії св. Івана Христителя у Нюарку, які турбуються їх долею." Так я сказав Сергієві, який колись був алкоголіком і вже 2 роки і 7 місяців не рушив крап-лі алкоголю. Він працює але заробляє дуже мало і йому тяжко прожити. Він сердечно дякував за це несподіване щастя і вкінці обняв мене і сказав «"Ну, тепер я знаю, що є Бог!" Петро, один з охоронців при Карітас в Дрогобичі, дуже втішився, бо він виживає на дуже убогій платні, яку часто не виплачують на час, бо працедавець не має чим йому платити. Завтра маю на увазі подарувати по 250 гривень прибиральниці, яка мені вчора розповідала що їй нічого не залишається із зарплати і що то не легко жити зі шістьома людьми в двох кімнатах. Також понесу по 250 гривень Дарії, Ярославі, Ані, Любі, Оксані, Мирославі та двом Маріям - жінкам, які в дощ, сніг, чи пекуче сонце день за днем сидять на базарі та стараються продати молоко, сир, яйця та сметану. Також понесу ваші по-дарунки двом Ганям, Михайлині та Наталці, по другому кінці базару. В суботу понесу по 250 гривень кільком бувшим алкоголікам, які дуже сильно над собою працюють, а дуже бідно живуть. В понеділок з вашим подарунком відвідаю 23 неповносправих молодих людей а також Олега, Богдана, Сашу, Мішу, Миколу, Володю та Люду з «Нашої Хати», організації, яка допомагає бездомним. Ще вистачить грошей для мами, яка сама виховує дитину, для старої жінки, яка доглядає хворого чоловіка, молодому чоловікові, який недавно одружився, і дуже їм тя-жко прожити… та іншим. Дякую вам за вашу чудову щедрість! Знайте, що ваше добре серце торкається ду-же багато людей! Обіцяю дальше вас інформувати.
