We join our Holy Father Pope Francis in expressing our wishes that in this Holy Year all of the faithful of our Church, draw attention to acts of mercy of both body and soul. So let us remember them in the order that our Catechism taught us: Pertaining to the soul: Pertaining to the body

Convert the sinner 1. Feed the hungry Teach the ignorant 2. Give drink to the thirsty Advise those in doubt 3. Clothe the naked Comfort the sad 4. Accept the traveler to your home Patiently endure injustice 5. Care for the sick Forgive grievances 6. Visit the imprisoned Pray for the living and deceased 7. Bury the deceased

These works of mercy seem very simple, ordinary, almost commonplace if just expressed in words but if they are embodied into our lives they become a concrete sign of God’s love and a most con-vincing sermon of the Gospel teachings. It is through works of mercy that the Gospel becomes visi-ble and our faith reaches a concrete path to salvation because as says St. Paul, we are saved through faith working through love (Gal. 5,6). As also faith without works is dead. (James 2: 26) In addition, according to Metropolitan Andrey, "there is no more certain way to win God's mer-cy, than to show mercy and respect for one’s neighbors. (Pastoral Letter for Great Lent, 1929) Our Lord calls the merciful blessed, assuring them that they, too, will receive mercy (Math 25,40). Let us look around us with eyes cleared by faith – and we will see Jesus in many places of our daily reality, Jesus who is suffering and awaits our help and mercy. Look, there is a lonely person living next door, who cannot leave her home; look, there is a widow who is very sad because her husband was killed in the war; look, there are orphans who lost their father or mother; look, there are refugees who in fear of their lives were forced to leave their homes; look, there is a co-worker who for some reason is sad and depressed; look, there’s an ill-fated person who is living an immoral life, immersed more and more in the quagmire of alcohol and drugs ... All of them await God’s mercy and the compassion and help of the people around them. Unfortunately they often wait in vain! And all because Christians lack concern, have allowed themselves to be manipulated by egoism and live by focusing only on themselves, locked in their own problems and affairs. Listen to the worlds of the Holy Father Pope Francis, through which we hear the pleas of the outcasts of our age. This Holy Year we can learn something new and we open our hearts to those who are in the most hopeless of life’s peripheries. Oh, how many situations there are of uncertainly and suffering in this world! How many wounds on the bodies of many, who no longer have a voice for their cries grew weak as a result of the indifference of many people. During this Jubilee Year our Church is called to heal the wounds, to clean them with the oils of concern, to bind the wounds with mercy and to heal them with solidarity and proper attention. Let us fight the indifference which throws us into habits that lull the spirit and makes us destructive cynics. Let us open our eyes so that we can see the troubles of the world, the wounds of so many of our brothers and sisters who have been deprived of dignity. Let us be incited to hear their bellowing for help. Let our hands clasp their hands, let us draw them to us so that they can feel the warmth of our presence, friendship and brotherhood. Let their cries become ours, so that we can work together to break the barrier of indifference and do away with hypocrisy and egoism. (Bull of The Face of Mercy).

1929 рік). Господь сам називає блаженними милосердних, запевняючи їх про те, що вони за-знають милосердя (пор. Мт. 5, 7). А у відомій розповіді про Страшний суд Ісус навчає, що все, що ми зробимо одному з Його братів найменших, робимо Йому самому (пор. Мт. 25, 40).

Погляньмо навколо себе очима, очищеними вірою, – побачимо в багатьох місцях нашої щоденної дійсності Ісуса, який страждає й очікує на нашу допомогу та наше милосердя. Ось поруч із нами мешкає самотня особа, яка неспроможна вийти з дому; ось удова, що сумує за вбитим на війні чоловіком; ось сироти, котрі втратили батька-годувальника чи рідну матір; ось переселенці, які змушені були покинути рідні сторони й домівки, рятуючи своє життя; ось спів-робітник, що з невідомої причини сумний і пригноблений; ось нещасна людина, яка веде не-моральне життя, занурюючись щоразу більше в трясовину алкоголю чи наркотиків… Усі вони чекають на Боже змилування, на людське співчуття і допомогу. На жаль, як часто чекають да-ремно! А все тому, що християни збайдужіли, дали себе опанувати егоїзмові й живуть, зосе-реджені лише на собі, замкнені у своїх клопотах і справах. Вслухаймося у слова Святішого Отця Франциска, через якого промовляють до нас знедолені люди нашого часу: «Цього Свя-того року ми зможемо отримати новий досвід, відкривши серця всім тим, хто живе на най-більш безнадійних життєвих периферіях, що їх так часто світ створює драматичним чином. Скільки ж ситуацій невпевненості й страждання у нинішньому світі! Скільки ж ран на тілі бага-тьох, які вже не мають більше голосу, бо їхній крик ослаб і згас через байдужість багатих на-родів. У цей Ювілей Церква стане ще більше покликана лікувати ці рани, обмивати їх оливою потішення, перев’язувати милосердям і лікувати їх солідарністю й належною увагою. Не впа-даймо в байдужість, яка принижує, у звичку, яка присипляє дух і не дозволяє відкрити новиз-ну, у цинізм, який нищить. Розплющмо наші очі, аби побачити біду світу, рани стількох братів і сестер, позбавлених гідності. Відчуймо себе провокованими, чуючи їхнє волання про допомо-гу. Наші руки нехай потиснуть їхні руки, притягнімо їх до себе, аби вони відчули тепло нашої присутності, приязні й братерства. Нехай їхній крик стане нашим, так щоб ми разом зламали бар’єр байдужості, яка часто царює владним чином, аби приховати лицемірство та его-їзм» (Булла «Обличчя милосердя»).

PASTORAL LETTER ON THE OCCASION OF THE YEAR OF GOD’S MERCY

(continued from last week)

“Blessed are the merciful for they will be shown mercy.” (Mathew. 5,7) When our Lord Jesus began His public ministry, He came to the synagogue in his family vil-lage of Nazareth and read the words of Isaiah with which the people in the Old Testament marked the beginning of the Jubilee year. “The Spirit of the Lord in upon me, because He has anointed me to bring glad tidings to the poor. He has sent me to proclaim liberty to captives, and recovery of sight to the blind, to let the oppressed free and to proclaim a year acceptable to the Lord. (Luke 4, 18-19). Every jubilee is an incentive to charitable acts toward one’s neighbor and that is no wonder, for God's mercy, which is a manifestation of the Lord's eternal love, is always directed toward those with specific needs and necessities. And so the primary recipients of God’s mercy this Holy Year must be the needy who live alongside of us: widows, orphans, the sick, the lonely, refugees, those who have been wounded and maimed by war, outcasts, those who have been forgotten etc. It is through us that God primarily directs his words of encouragement to these needy so that they can feel His loving and merciful presence.

Epistle: A reading from the Epistle of the holy Apostle Paul to the Corinthians. ( Corinthians. 11: 23 - 32)

Brothers: I received from the Lord what I hand-ed on to you, namely, that the Lord Jesus on the night in which he was betrayed took bread, and after he had given thanks, broke it and said, “This is my body, which is for you. Do this in remembrance of me.” In the same way, after the supper, he took the cup, saying, “This cup is the new covenant in my blood. Do this when-ever you drink it, in remembrance of me.” Every time, then, you eat this bread and drink this cup, you proclaim the death of the Lord until he comes! This means that whoever eats the bread or drinks the cup of the Lord unworthily sins against the body and blood of the Lord. A man should examine himself first; only then should he eat of the bread and drink of the cup. He who eats and drinks without recognizing the body eats and drinks a judgment on himself. That is why many among you are sick and in-firm, and why so many are dying. If we were to examine ourselves, we would not be falling un-der judgment in this way; but since it is the Lord who judges us, he chastens us to keep us from being condemned with the rest of the world.

Alleluia verses: The eyes of all look hopefully to you, and you give them their food in due sea-son. You open your hand and satisfy the desire of every living thing.

Gospel: John 6: 48 - 54 The Lord said: “I am the bread of life. Your ancestors ate manna in the desert, but they died. This is the bread that comes down from heaven for a man to eat and never die. I myself am the living bread come down from heaven. If anyone eats this bread he shall live forever; the bread I will give is my flesh, for the life of the world.” At this the Jews quarreled among themselves, saying, “How can he give us his flesh to eat?” Thereupon Jesus said to them: “Let me solemnly assure you, if you do not eat the flesh of the Son of Man and drink his blood, you have no life in you. He who feeds on my flesh and drinks my blood has life eternal, and I will raise him on the last day.”

Instead of ‘Indeed it is fitting’: My soul, extol the Lord, who gave his flesh as mystical food. My soul, extol Christ our God, who gave his flesh for man’s salvation. You are all desire. You are all delight, word of God, son of the Virgin, Lord, the God of gods, you are the holiest of the holy.

Áî òîé, õòî їñòü i ï’º, íå ðîçðiçíÿþ÷è Ãîñïîäíüîãî òiëà, ñóä ñîái їñòü i ï’º. Îñü ÷îìó ó âàñ áàãàòî íåäóæèõ òà õâîðèõ, à ÷èìàëî é óìèðàþòü. ßêáè ìè ñàìi ñåáå îñóäæóâàëè, òî íàñ áè íå ñóäèëè. Êîëè æ Ãîñïîäü íàñ ñóäèòü, âií íàñ òèì ïîïðàâëÿº, ùîá íå áóëè ìè çàñóäæåíi çî ñâiòîì.

ПОСЛАННЯ БЛАЖЕННІШОГО СВЯТОСЛАВА ДО ДУХОВЕНСТВА І ВІРНИХ УГКЦ ТА ВСІХ

ЛЮДЕЙ ДОБРОЇ ВОЛІ З НАГОДИ РОКУ БОЖОГО МИЛОСЕРДЯ (продовження з минулого тижня)

«Блаженні милосердні, бо вони зазнають милосердя» (Мт. 5, 7)

Коли Господь Ісус розпочинав свою публічну діяльність, то, прийшовши до синагоги у своєму родинному містечку Назареті, прочитав слова пророка Ісаї, якими старозавітний на-род знаменував початок Ювілейного року: «Господній Дух на мені, бо він мене помазав. Пос-лав мене нести Добру Новину бідним, звіщати полоненим визволення, сліпим прозріння, ви-пустити пригноблених на волю, оповістити рік Господній сприятливий» (Лк. 4, 18-19).

Кожний ювілей є спонукою до діл милосердя стосовно ближнього. І це не дивно. Адже Боже милосердя, яке є виявом Господньої вічної любові, завжди має за адресата людину з її конкретними потребами та нуждами. Тож привілейованими адресатами Божого милосердя цього Святого року мають стати потребуючі люди, які живуть поруч із нами: вдови, сироти, недужі, самотні, вимушено переселені, поранені й покалічені війною, знедолені, відкинуті, забуті тощо. До них усіх насамперед Бог скеровує свої слова потіхи та бажає – за нашим по-середництвом – дати відчути їм свою люблячу і милосердну присутність.

Спільно зі Святішим Отцем Франциском висловлюємо побажання, щоб кожен вірний нашої Церкви звернув увагу в цьому Святому році на діла милосердя щодо душі і щодо тіла. Отож пригадаймо собі їх у тому порядку, як подає наш Катехизм:

Щодо душі: Щодо тіла: 1. Грішника навернути 1. Голодного нагодувати 2. Невіжу навчити 2. Спраглого напоїти 3. В сумніві порадити 3. Нагого зодягнути 4. Сумного потішити 4. Подорожнього в дім прийняти 5. Кривду терпеливо зносити 5. Недужому послужити 6. Образу з серця прощати 6. Ув’язненого відвідати 7. За живих і мертвих молитися 7. Померлого похоронити

Ці діла милосердя у словесній формі видаються дуже простими, звичайними, майже буденними, проте, втілені в конкретику нашого життя, стають вимовним знаком Божої любові й чи не найпереконливішою проповіддю євангельського вчення. У ділах милосердя Євангеліє стає видимим, а наша віра осягає спасенну конкретність, бо, як застерігає св. Павло, нас ря-тує тільки віра, чинна любов’ю (пор. Гал. 5, 6). Натомість віра без діл є мертвою (пор. Як. 2).
