Dr. Deniz Ünsal Sessional Lecturer PhD Columbia University, 2004 [email protected] Cornett B212 As an anthropologist my primary interests include heritage and museum studies, cultural landscapes, urban culture and cultural policies. These have been the areas of my teaching in Istanbul in the last 10 years before moving to Victoria in 2015. I value the combination of academic research with professional work. So have I volunteered and worked in and for museums in New York, Amsterdam and Turkey. I conducted projects on local history and visualization of heritage for museums, exhibition-making and mapping of heritage and cultural resources in different cities in Turkey. My current research is in Troy, Çanakkale, Turkey and centers on cultural landscape, sense of place and meaning in World Heritage Sites.. Previous academic positions held Assistant Professor, Arts and Cultural Management, Faculty of Communication, Istanbul Bilgi University (2005-2015) Director, MA Program in Cultural Management, Istanbul Bilgi University (2012-2015) Coordinator, BA Program in Arts and Cultural Management, Istanbul Bilgi University (2006- 2012) Ongoing Museum Projects -Cappadocia Museum Project; Exhibition-making (Ministry of Culture and Tourism of Turkey, in cooperation with Yalın Architecture Firm and Nevşehir Archeology Museum) -Reorganization of the historic kitchens of the Süleymaniye Mosque Complex as exhibition space (General Directorate of Foundations in Turkey, in cooperation with Yalın Architecture Firm) Selected Publications 2014. “The Reconquest of Constantinople: Reflections on the contemporary landscape and Panorama 1453 History Museum in Istanbul” Whose City is that?
