Sask K of C Charitable Foundation Annual Report We have received several questions from Councils concerning our Annual Report. These are questions that I feel others may also be thinking about, so I will share the questions and responses that were provided:
1. James & Lawrence Meier grant – I initially thought that the available grant was $5k to be distributed rather than $15.5k (not upset though) –The Grants Committee decided to allocate an additional $10,500.00 in funds to the James & Lawrence Meier Grant for this one year. Also, Marvin & Pat DeSchryver allocated an additional $5400.00 as well. ($5,000.00 + $10,500.00 +$5,400.00= $20,900.00). We recognized that these were a group that were vulnerable during these uncertain economic times and could use the funding.
2. Recipients receiving the grant should receive the funds from the Foundation shortly? All recipients that have been approved to receive a Foundation Grant should expect to get the checks shortly after the Annual Meeting.
3. Specific to the Vocations Endowment – I note that interest earned/capital gain on the fund (Page 15) is approximately $20,000. $14,400 was allocated to the 10 seminarians Is the allocation calculated - earnings less operating expense? How is the operating expense for any of the funds calculated? The amount of the earnings for each endowment is determined by the percent of the endowment relative to the assets of the Foundation. On Jan 1, 2019, the foundation’s assets were $3,831,711 and the Vocations endowment held $317.336 or 8.28%. During 2019 the Foundation earned $207,608. excluding Capital gains, Losses, write-ups and write-downs. The vocations endowment’s share was 8.28% or $17,194. The expenses were allocated the same way. The Expenses were $41,545 of which 8.28% or $3,441 was billed to Vocations. $17,194 - $3,441 = $13,753. This is the
amount that was available to hand out in 2020. The amount allocated ended up being slightly higher which was favourable for the Seminarians.
4. I note on Total Donation beginning on Page 34 that the amount shown for my Council for Total Donations is less than the amount for K of C Vocation Endowment donations beginning on Page 38. Please explain. The Total Donations spreadsheet on Pages 34 -37 is for January 1st, 2019 – December 31st, 2019. The Vocations Endowment spreadsheet beginning on Page 38 is for the second year of the K of C Vocations Endowment campaign which ran from April 1st, 2019 – March 31st, 2020. In summary, the funds that your Council donated to the K of C Vocations Endowment from January 1st, 2020 to March 31st, 2020 is not included within the Total Donations spreadsheet.
We look forward to any other questions that may come in regarding our Annual Report. Please send by e-mail to [email protected] or [email protected]. Unspent Convention Dollars With our convention being cancelled this year we would like to propose that each Council exemplify the lesson of Charity by investing the “Unspent Convention Dollars” that they planned to spend on the convention on an act of Charity. We ask for a minimum of $225.00 from every Council on one (or more) of the three options below. If you wish to discuss or complete a purchase you may call or e- mail Shawn Scherr 306 222 9549 [email protected]. All payments are made through the Sask K of C Charitable Foundation.
A. Wheelchairs - The Sask Knights of Columbus received a shipment of 60
wheelchairs in Saskatoon on March 24th, 2020. There are chairs for youth as
well as adults. Each of the chairs has the Knights of Columbus logo
embroidered into the fabric. The price per wheelchair is $225.00.
B. Coats for Kids - The Sask Knights of Columbus has just purchased 50 boxes of
Coats through a special promotion in partnership with Supreme Council. The
coats will be delivered to Saskatoon early next month.
Councils can purchase a box of 12 coats for a total purchase price of $200.00.
C. K of C Vocation Endowment - The Sask K of C Charitable Foundation, in
partnership with the Bishops, priests, councils and parishes began the third
year of our campaign on April 1, 2020. We have again established a target of
Councils that have already contributed a minimum $200.00 to the Unspent
Convention Dollars campaign
