gunfire while evacuating woundedrecently, but the crew was rescuedand the downed chopper recoveredsoonafterward. The chainof eventsbegan justafter one of twoHUSKIESfrom Det 6, 38th ARRSq, Bien HoaAB, RVN, had hoisted a woundedsoldier aboard from the dense jun-gle and was preparing for a secondrescuee. Suddenly bullets begantearing theirway through the plexi-glass on the pilotts side of the HH-43F and TSgt Richard A. Connon, the hoist operator, was struck in thecalf andthigh. CaptHarold D. Salemquickly pulled the helo away fromthe direction of the enemy fire and,as the rotor RPM began dropping,Capt Dale L. Potter, the copilot, radioed that theyhad been hit. Sec-onds later, A2c FrederickL.Sangerreported oil pouring through theceiling into the cabin.

Ïhe oil caution light was glowingand thetree topswere a scant 7b feetbelow but Captain Salem managedto checkthe helicopter's descent andthen, a fewseconds later, climbed to200 feet as the rotor RPM leveledoff. Despite the oil loss, the pilotcontinued onward fortwo miles to asmall clearing where he laaded with-out further damage to the rescuechopper. Just before touchdown theoi l pressuredroppedto zeroand theengine oil temperature beganto risesharply. Withweapons at theready, the helo crew jumped out to secure

ger, a pararescue medic fromDet 6,38th ARR^Sq, Bien Hoa AB, RVN,gave his own life recently while de-fending wounded soldiers during afierce firefight aboutSl miles fromthe base. The 21-year-old rescue-man hadvoluntarily dropped from ahoveringHH -43F into the dense jun-gle to aid a squad surrounded byVietCongand under constant sniperand artilleryfire. As hetreated thewounded, he also passed them am-munition taken from men who couldno longer use it. He even gave hisown pistol to an injured soldier nolonger able to fire a rifle.

Uith th" ktto*ledge that the wound-ed are often deliberately killed bythe Viet Cong, young Pitsenbargerdefended his charges to the last.Justbefore his death hehad col lect-

the area and seconds later the sec-ond Det 6 HUSKIE, piloted by CaptCharles P. Nadler, landed to assist.Others aboard were Capt Karl G.King, the copilot, A1c Gerald C.Hammond, Jr., helicopter mechan-ic, and SSgt David E. Milsten, res-cue specialist. Two armed UH-18Army hellcopters, which had beenflying escort for the evacuation mis -

sion, provided protective cover overthe clearing as the wounded soldierand Sergeant Connon were humiedlytransferred to the second HUSKIE.As theHUSKIE lifted off, one escorthelicopter landed, picked up AirmanSanger, andtook off -thentheother

dropped down to evacuate CaptainsSalem and Potter,

f,leanwhile, Maj Maurice G. Kess-ler, commander of Det 6, had takenoff from Bien Hoa in another HUSKIEas soon as he heard that one of hiscrews was in trouble. With himwere lst l t Mark C. Schibler, co-pilot, A1c Alexander Montgomery, helo mechanic, and A3c Gordon C.Thayer, rescue special ist. Thishelo met the returningHH-43F and, after findingout all had been saved,Major Kessler escorted it to thehospital. After ground troops movedin to secure the area, the two Det 6HUSKIES returned to the clearingand the battle-marked HH-43F wasquickly prepared for airlifting bySSgt Wil l iam D. than three hours a-fterbeing downed, the HUSKIE was lifted from theclearing by anArmy CH-47 and re-turned to base for repairs and fu-ture rescue service. (Three of thepilots who participated in this mis-sion have logged 1000 hours each inthe HUSKIE during the last fewmonths. Their photos appear onpage 17 . )

A few weeks laterin a similar in-cident, thetwo-mancrewof a down-ed Army helicopter was rescued byan HH-43F fromDet 9, 38thARRSq,Pleiku Airport, RVN. The HU-18had crashed at night i.n such heavyjungle it could not be located despitean intensive search. The neÉ morn-ing Capt Richard L. Cardwell andhis crew returned and located thewreckage after one survivor wasable to light a flare. SSgt GeorgeE. Schipper, pararescue specialist, was lowered from the HUSKIE aldmanaged to free the seriously in-jured crew ehief who was then hoist-ed to the helicopter and taken to anArmy aid station. Sergeant Schipperremained on theground and an hourlater had managed to extricate theinjured pilot. He was also hoistedto the rescue helicopter a:od flownto the aid station. Afterwards bothArmy menwere taken to thehospitalat Pleiku. Other members of theHH-43F crew were Capt Dale R.Tyree, copilot; A2c William L.Houghtaling, crewman; and Capt AlAsendorf(MC), doctor.

"Pitsil made his last flight was CaptHarold D. Salem; Maj Maurice G.Kessler, detachment commander, was copilot on the mission and AlcGerald C. Hammond was flight me-chanic. All spoke highly of thebravery of theyoungparamedic whohad made over 300 flights, many ofthem hazardous, while in Vietnam -just a few days earl ier he haddropped into a minefield to rescuea wounded Vietnamese soldier.

Capt Dale L. Potter, who hadflown many missions with Pits andconsidered him a personal friend, said of the young pararescueman,

"Eventhough hewas youngin years,he hada lot of goodideas and a ma-turity that many men never attain. His ability and dedication to countryand duty were an example for every-one in the outfit. "

IJ you haae a question regard, ing Kaman AircraJtmaintenance, send, it along to Rotor Tips. The SeruiceDepartment's engineers will be glad to answer it.

a. (Applies UH-2) WHAT IS THE MOST PROBABLECAUSB OF TAIL \A/HBEL SHIMMY AND RESULTANTAIRCRAFT VIBRATION?

A. TaiI wheel shimmy is usually caused by improperadjustment of the nut on the spacer flange. The properinstallation procedure is found in the HMI, AirframeGroup, NAVWEH 01-260HCA-2-2. When a new tireand wheel assembly is installed, the adjustment nut onthe spacerflange should beturned in acounterclockwisedirection to properly position the axle wheel bearingsand eliminate wheel side play. After adjustment, thespacer flangenut should be secured tothe spacer flangewith a screw and locknut (see illustration of the tailshockstrut, P/N611800-501). Indications of an improp-erly adjusted spacer fla-nge nut are: (a) Excessive anderratic tire wear; (b) Aircraft tail vibration when taxi-ing; and (c) Tail vibration noticeable immediately aÍterreplacement of a new tire and wheel assembly.

(1, (Applies HH-43P,/F| WHrCH BLADES rN THEROTOR SYSTEM ARE THE IN-FLIGHT TRACKINGBT,ADES?

Á. Oo the right-hand rotor hub the in-flight trackingrotor blade is identified by the tip cap which is paintedwhite. On the left-ha-nd rotor hub the in-flight trackingrotor blade tip cap is always painted red. Rememberthe rhyme "right is white. "

Q. (Applies UH-z) CAN THE MAIN GEARBOX, AZI-MUTH, AND RETENTION ASSEMBLIES BE REMOVEDFROM THE AIRCRAFT AS A SINGLE UMT? IF THISIS PERMISSIBLE, WHAT SAFETY PRECAUTIONSSHOULD BE OBSERVED?

A. at a maintenance aid, the main gearbox, azimuth, and retention assemblies may be removed from the air-cra-ft as a unit. With the unit out of the helicopter a.ndsecured in the main gearbox worksta-nd or dolly assem-bly, maintenance personnelwill find all work areas andcomponents more readily accessible. A point to re-member isthat this procedureca:n onlybe accomplishedwith an overhead crane. Do not attempt to remove thecomponent unit with the portable hoist assembly, P/NK604013, because it cannot be extended high enough forthis configuration to allow the bottom of the gearbox tolift clear of its mounts. The portable crane is also load-limited to ?00 pounds.

\t ' l . ). Wogemoker, Seryice Engineer

(1. (Applies UH-2) cAN THE CocKpIT BT.ADETRACKING SYSTEM ACCELEROMETER NULL OUT-PUT BE CHECKED IN TIiE AIRCRAFT?

A. Yes, the check can be made in the aircra^ft in thefollowing manner: Align any rotor blade with the bladefolding positionitrg mark (45o forward port). Connectthe Fl ight Line Calibrat ion Test Set, P/NK604616-8,to the actuator controller and provide the necessarypower to energize the 28VDC bus and 26VAC inverterbus. Place the test set auto-manual switch in the ma.n-ual position. Either meter, C or D, should registersome deflection, depending on what blade is in the 4boforward port position. An acceptable accelerometernull is from 0 to 10 microamps. Replace the accelero-meter if the null reading is above this value. NOTE -

Only one meter should defleet. The other meter shouldremain at the 0 reading. If the meter is not at 0, re-check your resolver phasing as outlined in the HMI,Electr ical System, NAVWEm 01-260HCA-2-9.
