Welcome to this year’s ECC Milan Report. I have been going to this incredible event for over 30 years and find great

satisfaction in building new relationships, and reconnecting with those suppliers we have been working with for decades. I love to see familiar faces when dining out, and the passion

and enthusiasm of the Italians is always uplifting.

To witness the huge commitment to product innovation and presentation that brands make is awe-inspiring. This year we saw some classic materials come back around, but these are always interpreted in a modern way – like the highly polished

finish on metals, for example.

Designers are embracing technological advances to beautiful —and functional—effect. LED lighting has enabled originality to be taken to new heights, creating moon-like reflective discs

and reimagining the Edison bulb. Modular and customisable collections enable a purely user-focused experience in both

furniture and lighting.

Between these pages you will find the most beautiful and creative offerings we saw at Milan 2015, all of which ECC is

making available to our design-loving New Zealand customers.

Why is Moooi going into carpets?

As a brand we are always pushing the boundaries of creativity with inspiring patterns and colours, which outlast everyday interiors. We had several carpets in our range already and Marcel was developing new designs when we came across this opportunity, so this venture is really just an extension of that, but with greater choice and flexibility.

What designs are available?

We have 3 categories of carpets that give you varying degrees of creative input. You can buy ‘off the shelf’ with our Signature Collection, where our team of 14 renowned names of the design, fashion and visual arts world have done the designing for you. If you want to customise a little you can choose from the Moooi Works collection of 20 designs, which you can then specify the shape and size, and play with the colour combinations. Finally, do your own thing. Let your sketches, fabric swatches or photos inspire a completely unique creation.

There are some additional designs by Marcel Wanders as well I see.

Yes, they’re part of the Signature Collection, but they are jacquard woven carpets. Technically refined, high definition images can be woven into the carpets with great precision. This especially developed weaving technique enhances the 3D effects, which really bring the magic illusions of Marcel’s designs to life.

What is unique about the printing process?

The unlimited colours that our new Chromojet printer is able to replicate in extremely high definition is unique to our production process. This can result in photo realistic carpets due to the accurate depth of tones that are produced. Take Eden Queen by Marcel Wanders for example—that carpet uses 365 colours, and Liquid Maple by Broersen & Lukács—it looks just like a photograph.

Do you cater for the hospitality industry and other project work?

There are 12 broadloom designs in the Signature Collection that have a repeating pattern, so you can fill the entire room, or a long corridor with these extraordinary designs. The printer itself is 100 metres in length so you can print several unlimited coloured designs of 400cm width without changing the injectors. I notice you have the carpets hung in this exhibition space. Is that one of the ways you see them being used?

Yes, certainly. Many of the designs are as beautiful as an artwork so why not hang it on your wall! We are probably more accustomed to that here in Europe with our tradition of wall tapestries. Maybe that can be a new trend in New Zealand.

Luna Oscura by Heike Buchfelder for Pluma CubicIridescent green coloured rooster tail feathers come together to create Luna Oscura, an extension to the already hugely successful Pluma Cubic feather lamp range. With plumes on the outside, and quills pointing inwards this unorthodox suspension lamp is both durable and modern.

6. Caddy Wing Chair by Carlo Colombo for GiorgettiThe Caddy collection conveys a concept of comfort expressed in a wing chair and a pouf characterised by softness, thanks to special inserts for the headrest and lumbar support.

7. Fedde Sofa by Piet BoonInspired by the casual and relaxed atmosphere of beach houses, the Fedde series comfortably fits into any environment with its loose wide hem and wonderfully soft arm and backrest. The Fedde series exists as a sofa, fauteuil, loveseat and a pouf and—with its removable covers—is easy to maintain.

8. Eclisse by Massimiliano Raggi for ContardiA play of light and shadow, unveilings and overlappings, where the main light comes from the ceiling disc and the side rings provide a secondary, more atmospheric light.

9. 24 Karati by Matteo Ugolini for KarmanAppearing as a suspended gem, 24 Karati is a metaphor for the utmost purity of a noble element. It glitters translucently in smoked or amber finishes, but becomes more about the form in the milky white version.

10. TIM by Olgoj Chorchoj Studio for BommaAll globes in the TIM collection are unique mouthblown pieces presented at an eye-catching scale. They are named after the exhibition ‘Tim Burton and His World’ for which Studio Olgoj Chorchoj designed crystal cupolas to house Burton’s movie characters. The collection consists of two over-sized crystal cupolas in dimensions of 50 and 70 centimetres.

1. Acid Marble Table Lamp by Lee Broom Formed from layers of Carrara and Nero Marquina marble, the Acid Marble Table Lamp by Lee Broom uses yellow glass accents to add a contemporary pop edge to this classic material.

2. Mizar Table by Roberto Lazzeroni for Giorgetti With a strong visual impact, the Mizar Table by Roberto Lazzeroni is one of a series of oval tables with a base of cast bronze. The gold Calacatta marble top gives great prestige and, divided into four parts, gives off an asymmetric effect of tones and colours.

Synonymous with luxury, a delicately treated piece of marble can elevate and soothe, but the precious rock is no longer confined simply to flooring and benchtops. Glowing bars of light, gleaming walls, and veiled beneath acid Perspex – these are just some of the surprising uses of marble now available. Rodolfo Dordoni for Minotti pairs a wonderfully striated marble slab with polished metal in a range of chic side tables, and employs balance and a refined elegance in his Catlin coffee table. Giorgetti, too, recalls sweeter times with its nostalgic oval Mizar dining table. Perhaps the most astounding manipulation of the mineral can be found at Lee Broom. Playing with our perceptions, his range of lighting is milled from Carrara marble, and cut to such a fine degree that light emanates through the stone. These items appear as solid marble until switched on, when they transform into glowing translucent stone. What material other than

marble would provide such an unexpected sleight of hand?

3. Tube Pendant by Lee Broom Skillfully milled from a single piece of Carrara marble and finished at each end with bands of brushed brass, Tube contains a strip of LED resulting in what appears to be a solid length of warm glowing stone. The unique veins of each piece of marble mean no two lights are exactly the same. A handcrafted twist on the traditional fluorescent tubelight.

4. Bookend and Trivet by Salvatori for RitzwellThe interiors on the Ritzwell stand were enhanced by sculptures in marble and glass that complemented the expert Japanese craftsmanship.

5. Elliott Coffee Table by Rodolfo Dordoni for MinottiRodolfo Dordoni’s Elliott coffee table has an aesthetic nature akin to that of a precious object. It’s rich use of materials and restrained design reveals a well-measured elegance that mimics the Milanese design from the 50’s and 60’s. The Elliott coffee tables have been built with a practical internal compartment that can be used for storing magazines or other objects.

6. Catlin Coffee Table by Rodolfo Dordoni for Minotti The Catlin coffee table conveys an air of sophisticated simplicity, and is available in an array

of materials that express refined, restrained elegance. The elegant metal base features a cross-pattern motif, which can be produced in textured black-painted paired with bright

chrome or gold finish, while the table top is available in laminated smoked grey glass or in two rare marbles—Arabescato Purple or Sahara Noir—with polished finish.

Mike Thorburn talks to Lee Broom about his installation ‘The Department Store’, which was named as one of

Where did the concept of a Department Store come from?

It was after I saw the space on Via Capellini and the idea of turning a street of disused shops into my own Department Store sounded appealing. This was also our largest collection to date, there are around 25 new pieces from furniture to lighting to accessories and all those pieces seemed to fall into 10 mini collections. Therefore it was key to be able to present them in their own settings, so a department store worked well with that concept. Visitors to the show moved from tableau to tableau through the exhibition, with each environment representing a surreal take on a different department – including The Perfumery, Ladies Accessories, Fitting Rooms, Book Store and Haberdashery.

What were the challenges of getting the installation set up in Milan?

With such a large scale installation there are always challenges. The first challenge started 3 weeks before Milan started which was to entirely refurbish the space from 5 individual shops into once large space over two floors. The next challenge was getting everything over to Milan from London in one piece as we didn’t just have the products themselves but also all the glass display cabinets, mannequins and hundreds of props that were used to style the space.

What are the influences in the collection?

I wanted to explore all the things that inspire me right now; from new materials, vivid colours, pop culture,

craft culture, techniques from the past and shapes from the future. The collection features new materials and new interpretations of those used in previous collections. Each piece incorporates some kind of traditional manufacturing techniques in an innovative way. Why is everything presented on a grey background?

Each department acted as a backdrop which was finished in Lee Broom signature grey to accentuate the colours and materials of the new pieces. This collection has a lot more colour than used in previous collections and I wanted that to stand out in the show. I was also inspired by the surrealist photography of 1930’s photographers such as Horst and Manray who used lots of mannequins and props in their black and white photography. The exhibition was almost like being in a black and white movie.

What did you do before you started your own design brand?

I started out in theatre school and the plan was to continue being a professional actor, however my career took a change of direction after I won a fashion design competition at the age of 17 judged by Vivienne Westwood. I then went to go on to work for Vivienne before studying for a degree in fashion design at Central St Martins. During my degree I provided décor advice to a number of independent bars across London which cemented an organic move into interior design for around 4 years before I launched the Lee Broom brand in 2007.

Rich and inviting, walnut has an understated depth and timelessness. Ritzwell uses it well in its structured armchairs and ottoman softened by plush leather upholstery, and their minimal, elegantly curved Marcel dining chair speaks to the company’s Japanese pedigree. Zeitraum’s interpretation is best seen in their modern Nonoto chair, whose design, by Läufer and Keichel, is animated and surprising. Paired with classic white saddle leather, as seen at Giorgetti in such different pieces as a graceful armchair and a writing desk, the richness of the walnut canaletto comes into its own. Volume is explored by Roderick Vos; his Kigi tables for Linteloo are built from solid walnut and resemble cogs or wheels. They live happily in clusters of differing sizes. Conversely, timber’s potential for fineness is what’s on show at Nomon. Their incredibly delicate Barcelona

clock defies belief with its lightness and precision.

1. Norah by m2atelier for GiorgettiExquisitely fashioned out of walnut canaletto, Norah has a lightness of design. Continuous lines connect the whole skeleton from the arms to the legs in a single flowing shape.

2. Ibiza Forte Coffee Table by Jun Kamahara and Blava High Back Chair by Atelier D.QJapanese furniture maker, Ritzwell, presents its range of furniture fashioned predominantly from walnut that gives the legacy of Japanese hospitality a contemporary twist with strong lines and sleek structure.

3. Studium Writing Desk by Umberto Asnago for GiorgettiWhat better motivation to get to work than this stunning Studium Writing Desk. With a structure in solid and veneered walnut canaletto, the desk is equipped with two small upper drawers and two large drawers in its body. It is covered with saddle leather, which is available in different colour shades.

4. Swing Armchair by Carlo Colombo for Giorgetti For those days where you’d rather be on vacation, the Swing Armchair boasts a beautifully curved frame in solid walnut canaletto wood. The saddle leather covering gives a particular charm to this chair with a really unique design, for a style that is refined and at the same time nostalgic.

5. Kigi Tables by Roderick Vos for Linteloo This clutch of three round side tables come in different sizes and heights and are made of solid timber. Their name, Kigi, refers to ‘a family of trees’, and designer Roderick Vos says he was ‘strongly influenced by a Japanese style characterised by its minimalistic forms, clean lines and simple shapes’.

6. Turntable by Formstelle, Nonoto Chairs by Läufer and Keichel for Zeitraum A charming scene that exposes Zeitraum’s love for the warmth of timber. From the quirk of Läufer and Keichel’s solid wood Nonoto Chairs to the gracefully balanced Turntable by Formstelle, what better area to sit down with family and friends.

7. Cena by Birgit Gämmerler and Peter Gaebelein for Zeitraum The Cena table by Birgit Gämmerler and Peter Gaebelein, boasts a bevelled table-top which gives it a lightness which contrasts nicely with the reassuringly solid legs. Tables of different heights can be nested together. The small version can be used as a coffee table, and the large as a dining table.

Diana Armchair by Shinsaku Miyamoto for Ritzwell The inviting plushness of Diana carries with it a clear message of softness and relaxing comfort – a design that curves delicately to encompass your body. The wood frame and the leather cladding give the armchair a strong sensorial and visual impact.

Magpies beware; you’ll find a lot to covet with the latest lighting and home accessories in shimmering brass, copper and chrome. Used as panels on side tables, polished metals convey a vintage decadence. Delightfull’s imposing Galliano suspension is grand in scale and comprises a ring of impeccably detailed metal tubes, while Ladies and Gentlemen Studio stage a balancing act with their Shape Up 5 Piece chandelier. Tom Dixon’s love affair with precious metals endures with the stunning new Cube range of copper stationery and Tank, a collection of sleek glass and copper cocktail accoutrements. His Spun lighting series is all aglow in polished brass. 6. Elliott Coffee Table by Rodolfo Dordoni for Minotti A range of jewel-like coffee tables which are both highly decorative with their varied combination of elegant materials, and exceedingly practical with their internal compartment that can be used for storing magazines or other objects.

5. Knox Cabinet by VisionnaireSet against a moody, dark background in the Chatam Living Room, Knox shines its reflected light around the room. The polished exterior is bronze mirror glass, with gold and black details adding the finishing touch in hallmark Visionnaire style.

Glassdrop Table Lamp by Diesel Creative Team for Diesel LivingGlassdrop is brought to life with Foscarini’s know-how and material experimentation, and leads a double life thanks to an aluminum surface finish, which covers the blown glass body and interacts with light. When it is off the lamp’s surface is silver coloured and mirror-like and when you turn it on it is cosy and soft in a split personality that shows its two-fold nature with a simple flick of a switch.

9. Cog Pen and Pen Block by Tom Dixon A series of super functional accessories inspired by great British engineering and made from solid brass. Creating a sense of the tooled and the machined, these pieces are designed for the tabletop and the desk study.

8. Crash and Bell Pendants by Diesel Creative Team for Diesel LivingDiesel’s rock soul has taken shape in two lamps, Crash and Bell. Inspired by percussion instruments, these fittings have everything in common except their shapes. Crash resembles a cymbal while Bell looks just as its name suggests.

7. Shape Up 3-Piece Chandelier by Ladies & Gentlemen for Roll & Hill Shape Up is a versatile lighting series celebrating geometric shapes. These playful collages upend traditional notions of symmetry in favour of a dynamic spatial harmony. The collection’s abstracted shades are networked via connecting cords and hubs. Mike Thorburn talks to Tom Dixon about the Melt Pendant, a standout product at the fair. Pictured → Melt in gold, chrome and copper

Tell me about your new product Melt.

Melt is a concept I’ve been trying to achieve for a while. It’s a distorted light globe in molten-lava copper, ice-cold silver and sophisticated gold finishes. The light bouncing and reflecting around the uneven surfaces creates a dramatic melting hot blown glass effect. You can see the internal luminosity in full daylight with the light on and it has a mirror finish when off.

What were the production challenges in producing Melt?

I spent three years trying to produce a unique yet mass produced item by crushing my Copper shades. This process made beautiful, but unusable objects. Then last year we found an existing mould in the factory that was slightly asymmetrical, made in white plastic. When we metallised it, it made amazing, complex internal reflections. We then worked on half metallisation, which was when we had our EUREKA moment – the internal reflections worked, and you could also see into the lamp through the now half mirrored skin. Then the tricky part was making the bottom clear so that you still had a decent light output.

That existing mould you mentioned was from FRONT, correct? How did you link up with them?

I was walking in a park and spotted a street light with a moulded globe. After some investigation I discovered it was produced by the Swedish design collective FRONT. I’ve known FRONT since they started and they are friends, so it was no problem to call them and ask them if we could pay a royalty on their mould.

How will this product help you protect your intellectual property?

It’s actually a relatively difficult object to produce. I’m sure it will get copied but they will have a hard job getting all the complex qualities that this lamp has. Another step we have taken this year in Milan is to not show any prototypes. Everything you see is ready to go so that’s a step forward too.

Two years ago Buster + Punch set themselves a challenge. They would be the first independent design

A major trend at Milan this year was a real focus on customisability, with stunning pendant assemblages becoming far more than the sum of their parts. What better way to celebrate a beautiful pendant than to group it artfully with tens or even hundreds of its kind? Pendants should be clustered according to their nature: Andrea Tosetto’s aptly titled Rain pendants are staggered to drip down to varying heights, while Graypants’ woven Moa pendants have their naturalistic design further emphasised when hung like ripe fruit on a drooping tree. Small globes hung in perfectly calculated waves create an exquisite optical illusion and can be adapted to any space, while Buster + Punch arranged their Heavy Metal lampholders and Buster Bulbs in an upturned cone configuration, resulting in a deconstructed chandelier. Grouping many pendants together creates a sense of occasion. The concept is flexible, from a small cluster in an intimate dining room to a impressive cloud of lighting

to command attention in a larger area.
