Happy New Year, Church!
What a joy it is to be entering into my third year in
ministry at KFUMC. As I reflect over the last several years, I am
overwhelmed with how far we have come together. Through
the power of Christ at work in his church, we have welcomed
hundreds of new people to membership at KFUMC. We have
witnessed new life in births, baptisms, and professions of faith.
We have extended our ministries of love and justice further than
ever before as we serve people in Kerr County, Costa Rica,
Rwanda, and around the world.
Along the way, we have faced challenges. We have overcome financial
deficits and demonstrated fiscal discipline to ensure we do the most good for the
Kingdom with every dollar donated to the church. As a culture of generosity has
been developed, we have been able to meet all our ministry needs without special
appeals or fundraisers. This is the sign of a healthy, mature congregation.
Some of our challenges were not of our own making. Rather, they have
been pressed upon us by the ongoing disobedience of certain leaders in the great-
er United Methodist denomination. Though sometimes hard to do, we at KFUMC
have made a commitment to speak truth in love while holding fast to the doctrines
and disciplines of the United Methodist Church. We have chosen to anchor our-
selves in this great affirmation: This church belongs to Jesus Christ. By studying the
Bible, we learn ever more about how he wants us to Love God, Share Christ, and
Make Disciples.
As we enter a new season of ministry together in 2017, I am excited to turn
our attention to our neighbors as we find ways to invite them to become connected
to Jesus Christ through the ministries of KFUMC. As you know, we have dramatically
improved our efforts at hospitality and follow up for the people already visiting
KFUMC. Now we are ready to increase the number of visitors by becoming even
more proactive in issuing invitations to others.
Friends, there is so much to be excited about as we consider this next year
together. I pray you will be open to the Spirit’s leading as he shows you the places
where you are called to grow deeper spiritually, serve the church, and witness to
the community. I continue to pray for you, for the work Christ has put before us, and
the mission he has given us. If I can help you grow in your discipleship of Jesus Christ,
please let me know. My door is always open.
It is an honor to be your pastor,
Rev. Ryan Barnett

Thoughts from Pastor Phillip
Greetings Church! As many of you already know, this will be my final message to you as I
prepare to accept the role of pastor for FUMC Brownsville. My emotions have been all over the
place as we have prepared for this move. The one feeling that rises above the rest though is
thankfulness.
Not just as a pastor, but as a father, I could not have asked for a better church to serve be-
side these last few years. You have embraced and loved not only myself, but my wife and chil-
dren and for that I will always be thankful to KFUMC. My third born Aaron was baptized here, and I am
honored that this congregation said those baptismal vows to pray for and help raise him.
I am thankful for our United Methodist Church under whose itinerant system I was led here in the first place. It
is through that appointment system that I had the honor to serve you as pastor and meet so many wonderful
Christians that I will have the privilege to worship beside in eternity. I will now have the blessed opportunity to
meet new people, families, churched, and unchurched to worship beside in Brownsville.
I want you to know how much you have influenced, encouraged, taught, and loved me in my time here
and for all those things I cannot thank you enough.
I have many hopes, but my main hope is found in the Lord and trust He will continue to do amazing things
here at Kerrville First through you, the church body, with the faithful staff and clergy God has gifted you with!
Grace and Peace,
Pastor Phillip Hoeflinger

KFUMC 2020 Measuring Spiritual Growth
One of the five-year goals adopted by our Church Council is to increase
spiritual growth. My many years of business experience and serving on
numerous non-profit boards have taught me that goals need to be “SMART”
which is an acronym for Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Realistic and Time
-Bound. When I think about our spiritual growth goal, it seems to me that it
meets all of these criteria except for Measurable. How can you measure
spiritual growth?
When we first adopted this goal we, of course, had this discussion. Finally
we decided to use parameters that we know how to measure. So we settled
on worship attendance, Sunday school attendance and tithing. We decided
that those variables don’t actually measure spiritual growth, but we thought
that an increase in those areas would probably indicate that there was also
an increase in spiritual growth taking place. In essence, we decided to use
participation and attendance as proxies for measuring spiritual growth.
In the months since I was elected goal champion for spiritual growth, I
have continued to ponder the question, “How can you measure spiritual
growth itself?” I think about my own spiritual life and wonder what it would
look like if I was growing spiritually. Would I pray more, love more, be more
Christ-like? How would my life change? I think I am growing spiritually, but
how can I be sure?
Over the next several months, I will be working to find an answer to this
question and challenging the Council to be open to ways that we may be
able to measure spiritual growth itself. If you have any thoughts on this sub-
ject, please let me know. Your input would be greatly appreciated.
May the Spirit of Christ continue to grow in your heart during this Christmas
season and the years to come! Shalom,
Bob Rothe, Goal Champion for Spiritual Growth

The Nature of Enthusiasm
KFUMC Congregational Survey on Human Sexuality KFUMC Lay Leaders want to thank all those who participated in the congregational survey. As you may have heard, the
United Methodist denomination is facing serious challenges as we seek to live faithfully in a changing culture. In particular, our
denomination continues to debate whether we will change our traditional position regarding same-sex marriages and practicing
gay clergy. A special commission is currently meeting to discuss all these issues and propose "A Way Forward" for the United
Methodist Church. This survey was designed to give the members of KFUMC an opportunity to weigh in on these critical issues. All
responses were anonymous. The data from the survey will assist your lay leaders in representing you to the decision-makers in the
denomination as to the final outcome of this debate. Our Bishop Robert Schnase (a member of the special commission) will be
seeking feedback on these matters from the Rio Texas Conference this spring. Thanks to your participation, we will be prepared to
offer it in a way that reflects the body of our church. The response rate to the survey was greater than expected and statistically
very significant, indicating a valid random sample of the whole congregation. In the first weeks of January, all of the data will be
analyzed and prepared to be presented to the whole congregation. We plan to print the summary of responses in the February
issue of the monthly newsletter. This will allow everyone to receive the information at the same time. These are challenging times
in the United Methodist denomination. Please remain in prayer for our lay leaders, pastors, bishops, and denominational leaders.

Message from Pastor Donna
As a former educator, I used to love the
beginning and end of a school
year. The end allowed the
opportunity to reflect on the
year and its accomplishments,
and the beginning brought
the chance to start anew
again. In many ways a new
year provides the same oppor-
tunity, a time to begin again and “wipe the slate
clean”. What a perfect time to renew our com-
mitment to our Lord and growing in our disciple-
ship. I had the joy of teaching a class during Ad-
vent, which reminded me of the importance of
our being together to study, to learn, to share, to
listen, to grow. I know many of you are
involved in long-term studies, but for those of you
who aren’t, I encourage you to get involved. I
encourage you also to find your niche for ser-
vice. For more than 20 months, approximately 80
of our laity have been involved in serving our
own members. We are always in need of more
persons to help with our In-Reach ministry. I pray
that you will consider joining us, as I can assure
you that you will be blessed! As we are reminded
in Galatians 5:13b: serve one another humbly in
love.
May God bless you, and may God bless
KFUMC!
Yours in Christ,
Pastor Donna

Paul Trejo Joins KFUMC as
Director of Contemporary Worship
KFUMC welcomes Paul Trejo as new
Director of Contemporary Worship. Paul is
already well-known as a leader in student
ministry. He has served churches in the
Central Texas, North Texas and the former
Southwest Texas and Rio Grande
Conferences of the United Methodist
Church.
He has served under Rev. Dr. Rusty Freeman as Confer-
ence Director for Contemporary Worship and most
recently has been Worship Leader at Christ Fellowship
UMC (a new church) in San Antonio. Having a deep
belief in the power of the Holy Spirit to be at work during
worship, Paul hopes to serve First United Methodist Church
Kerrville by providing leadership in musical expressions of
worship in the contemporary venue.
Paul graduated from Texas State University with a
degree in Business Management, and he received his
Master of Divinity from the Perkins School of Theology at
SMU. Paul is a fierce lover of coffee, his family, and looks
forward to calling Kerrville home.
Please welcome Paul to KFUMC. He will begin full-time
in January.

Quick Facts from the U.S.
National Institute on Drug
Abuse (NIDA)
Many teens have turned
away from drinking alcohol and
smoking tobacco.
Teen use of prescription pain
killers is trending downward
among 12th graders.
Video games might be providing an adrenaline-
pumping alternative to drugs.
Increased use of social media could be playing a
role in reducing peer pressure to try drugs.
Research has shown that early exposure to nico-
tine primes the brain to be rewarded when teens
experiment with other drugs. Smokers are much
more likely to become addicted to illegal drugs or
alcohol after trying them.
Be a role model. Don’t smoke. If you need help
quitting, call 800-QUIT-NOW (800-784-8669).
