LOS ANGELES — The ladies of “Pitch Perfect 2” hit all the right notes opening weekend, amassing a $70.3 million debut, according to Rentrak estimates Sunday.

The Elizabeth Banks-directed sequel to the 2012 sleeper hit and video-on-demand phenomenon cost Universal Pictures only $29 million to produce and was expected to open in the $50 million range. The first film, for comparison, grossed only $65 million domestically across its entire run.

“It’s aca-awesome,” said Universal Pictures’ President of Domestic Distribution Nick Car-pou, using one of the catchphrases of the film about a cappella singing. “We knew that the film would be a success, but there’s something that happens when movies grow in their success beyond a range that’s easily predictable. When that happens, the sky’s the limit.”

Audiences for the musical comedy starring Anna Kendrick and Rebel Wilson were 75 percent female and 62 percent under the age of 25, according to Universal.

Carpou attributed some of the massive suc-cess to savvy positioning and the widespread appeal of the popular music and the charis-matic, diverse cast. He noted that ads during the NBA playoffs and a Super Bowl spot

helped to grow the film’s audience base.George Miller’s critically acclaimed “Mad

Max: Fury Road” landed a distant second in its debut weekend with a solid and expected $44.4 million from 3,702 locations. The high-octane, post-apocalyptic film cost a reported $150 million to make and stars Charlize Theron and Tom Hardy.

Although it cost significantly more than “Pitch Perfect 2” to produce and didn’t come close to matching its opening, “Mad Max: Fury Road” still had a promising and suc-cessful first weekend in theaters — especially considering the fact that it is R-rated.

“We’re very excited about the opening,” Warner Bros. President of Domestic Distri-bution Dan Fellman said. “We’re going to have some long legs and some great success on this movie.”

The film, which also played in IMAX and 3D, is one of the best reviewed in the studio’s history. Fellman said that many of the show-ings ended with applause, only adding to the hope that word of mouth will contribute to a lengthy and successful run.

Audiences for the film were 70 percent male and 46 percent under the age of 35, ac-cording to Warner Bros. (ap)

Taylor Swift wins 8 at Billboard AwardsLAS VEGAS — Taylor Swift dominated the Billboard Music Awards with

eight wins, including top artist, while Kanye West was booed during his perfor-mance that closed the three-hour event.

Swift also won top Billboard 200 album for “1989” and top female artist Sunday night.

“Oh, this is such a good night!” she said after winning the top prize, besting One Direction, Ariana Grande, Sam Smith and Katy Perry. “Early this morning I watched my brother Austin graduate from Notre Dame ... (and) to anyone who’s graduating this year ... this is for you.”

“This is kind of a graduation for us,” Swift said to the audience of top musicians.

West, however, was booed during his smoky performance of “All Day” and “Black Skinhead.”

“And now a doctor,” Kylie Jenner said while introducing the rapper, who earned an honorary doctorate from the Art Institute of Chicago last week.

Swift owned the night with wins for top Hot 100 artist and the fan-voted artist achievement award. Swift kissed her rumored boyfriend Calvin Harris on the cheek and gave him a hug at the MGM Grand Garden Are-na in Las Vegas. Swift, who sat next to the DJ-producer-singer, kicked off the awards by debuting her action-filled music video for “Bad Blood,” which stars Selena Gomez and Lena Dun-ham and s h o w -c a s e s S w i f t a s a f ight -i n g vixen.

Gomez fighting men in an office and then fighting each other. It ended with Swift’s and Gomez’s armies going head to head. Other stars in the clip included Mariska Hargitay, Ellen Pompeo, Jessica Alba and Ellie Gould-ing, and Hayley Williams of Paramore.

Swift swapped her first two verses with new ones from rapper Kendrick Lamar for “Bad Blood,” a song rumored to be about Swift’s friendship with Perry.

“I am so excited I got to show the world,” Swift told the audience.

One Direction, which recently downsized to four members, won the night’s first award for top duo/group. They also won top tour-ing artist.

“There is one more person to share this with, and that’s our brother Zayn,” Liam Payne said of Zayn Malik, who left the boy band.

Iggy Azalea won top rap song for “Fancy” as her NBA player boyfriend,

Nick Young, watched her with emotion. Azalea also won top streaming artist and rap artist.

Like Azalea, Smith and Pharrell also won three awards — the most after Swift.

Smith, who recently had vocal surgery, didn’t attend the show. He wrote his thank you speech

on cue cards, which aired via video when he won top male artist. (ap)

EvEry Temple and Shrine has a special date for it annual Ceremony, or “ Odalan “, every 210 days according to Balinese calendar, including the smaller ancestral shrine which each family possesses. Because of this practically every few days a ceremony of festival of some kind takes place in some Village in Bali. There are also times when the entire island celebrated the same Holiday, such as at Galungan, Kuningan, Nyepi day, Saraswati day, Tumpek Landep day, Pagerwesi day, Tumpek Wayang day etc.

The dedication or inauguration day of a Temple is con-sidered its birth day and celebration always takes place on the same day if the wuku or 210 day calendar is used. When new moon is used then the celebration always happens on new moon or full moon. SEMARAPURA - Scarcity of the three-kg LPG tube begins to expand to the region of Klungkung. Many residents are forced to buy food because they cannot cook a result of being unable to buy subsidized gas. If they can buy, they must also spend much money because the price of the three-kg gas tube reaches IDR 25,000 each at stall as experienced by one of the local residents, Ketut Pageh, Sunday (May 17).

The man living at Akah village, Klungkung, said that the scarcity of the three-kg gas tube has happened since the past two weeks. He admitted that it is difficult to buy the gas of that size because all the stalls have run out of stock. So, with this condition, he and his family are forced to buy cooked food because they cannot cook. “I have looked for the gas to many stalls, sir. I must even search to outside the village, but no one sells,” he said.

To anticipate the scarcity of the LPG, Pertamina immedi-ately comes down to perform market operation at a number of points in Klungkung. The market operation carried out spread over three subdistricts. Some are held at Akah village, Gelgel village and the office of Dawan subdistrict head.

However, the market operation conducted by the Pertamina was in fact deserted from the visit of residents. Instead, more subsidized gases are purchased by the circle of traders and restaurant owners.

Some residents were surprised because the price of the three-kg gas tube was cheaper than the market price. Selling price of the three-kg gas tube by Pertamina is IDR 14,500. Actually it was usually sold at stalls for IDR 19,000 each. “Do not be mistaken, sir. I myself once purchased it at IDR 25,000 forcibly in order that I can cook,” said one of the residents named Putu Budi.

In the market operation, residents are not easy to purchase the LPG. Each resident must attach identity card to purchase two tubes of gas. Moreover, it is specifically intended for the poor. However, in the market operation at Akah village on Friday (May 15), most people coming to purchase were traders. Among the traders, there are even those that borrow the identity card of their relatives in order to be able to pur-chase more LPGs for resale at their shop. Different market operation was conducted at Gelgel village. The sales system seems tighter. In addition to collecting copy of identity card, the buyers must also submit their family card. It is meant to anticipate the leakage of the sale and all residents can get lower price.

One of the officers of the Klungkung Cooperatives, In-dustry and Trade Agency, Wayan Mustika, said that local government is not fully engaged in the market operation. Precisely his party only supervises the activity. Mustika even argued that the three-kg gas tube is not scarce in Klungkung. “Actually, the three-kg gas is not scarce, but only the price is soaring from the market price,” he said.

In addition, Mustika also denied if there are parties com-mitting unfair business practices in the sale of the LPG in Klungkung so that the prices continue to soar. “We do not see it because from the statement of several collectors, they are usually able to supply gas in the morning, but then changes to midday. So, it kindles late delivery. As result of the delay, people purchase gas in large number,” he explained. (kmb)

Chairman of the Klungkung House, I Wayan Baru, asserted that inadequate supply of electricity in Nusa Penida needs to be addressed immediately. The clas-sical problems must not be let continue without a solution. According to him, so far the community at Nusa Penida has not received adequate electrical services. When the electricity is needed, the PLN is in Nusa Penida even does a blackout. Similar condition also happens to the availability of clean water where until today many people do not get the services. Water shortage is getting worse when dry season arrives.

The people’s representative from Cu-bang hamlet, Sakti village, Nusa Penida,

questioned about the readiness of the PLN in Nusa Penida in meeting the electricity needs. If the leadership of the PLN in Nusa Penida is incompetent to provide services, it must be requested to look for a replacement. “If it is incompetent to manage the electricity in Nusa Penida, it must immediately resign. Let be replaced by another more capable person,” he said, Monday.

According to Wayan Baru, the chal-lenges of the PLN in Nusa Penida will be even getting greater. The electrical problem may not become an obstacle for the government of Klungkung to promote tourism. So far, the community engaged in tourism frequently gets complaint from

travelers related to electricity condition that often goes out. “The demand for electricity should be serviced for 24 hours. Such frequent blackout has disrupted the activities of the community in tourism sector,” he complained.

To that end, Wayan Baru asked the executive to coordinate the availability of electricity and clear water beforehand lest the tourism development becomes stagnant due to both unresolved issues. As a result, the tourism in Nusa Penida growing rapidly at this time is not fol-lowed by the development of electricity and water services. “These problems must be immediately coordinated to find the best solution,” he concluded. Tourism development in Nusa Penida hampers by electricity, clean water

SEMArAPUrA - The endeavor of the Klungkung County to bring in investors to Nusa Penida is ascertained to be disturbed. So far, the supporting facilities such as electricity and clean water remain to become an obstacle in Nusa Penida. Both facilities are unable to meet the need of local people, let alone for the need of resorts or hotels. To that end, the legislative asked the executive to ensure the readiness of electricity and clean water prior to the development of tourism in Nusa Penida.

Researchers say bird waste will be the secret ingredient to kickstart Mother Nature’s grand experiment on what is a still ac-tive volcano that only poked its head above the waves in Novem-ber 2013.

That speck of land, some 1,000 kilometres (620 miles) south of Tokyo, has grown to engulf its once larger neighbour, Nishinoshima, a part of Japan’s Ogasawara island chain known for the wealth and variety of its ecosystem.

The new Nishinoshima, a re-spectable 2.46 square kilometres (0.95 square miles), the Japan Coast Guard said in February -- roughly the size of 345 football pitches -- is currently almost all bare rock, formed from cooling lava.

But scientists say it will one day be humming with plant -- and possibly animal -- life, as nature moves in to what is being called a “natural laboratory” on one of the latest bits of real estate in the

Pacific Ocean.“We biologists are very much

focusing on the new island be-cause we’ll be able to observe the starting point of evolutionary processes,” said Naoki Kachi, professor and leader of Tokyo Metropolitan University’s Oga-sawara Research Committee.

After the volcanic activity calms down, “what will probably happen first will be the arrival of plants brought by ocean currents and attached to birds’ feet,” he said.

Those seabirds, who could use the remote rock as a temporary resting place, could eventually set up home there.

Their excreta -- along with their dropped feathers, regur-gitated bits of food and rotting corpses -- will eventually form a nutrient-rich soil that offers fertile ground for seeds carried by the wind, or brought in the digestive systems of overflying birds.

“I am most interested in the

effects of birds on the plants’ ecosystem -- how their bodily wastes-turned-organic fertilisers enrich the vegetation and how their activities disturb it,” Kachi told AFP.

The old Nishinoshima, mea-suring just 0.22 square kilome-tres, was home to bird colonies until the eruptions scared the creatures away.

A small number have clung on to the only patch of the old island that is still visible, making their nests among ash-covered plants.

Japan, which sits at the junc-tion of several tectonic plates, is home to more than 100 active volcanoes.

Scientists have no idea when Nishinoshima will stop spewing lava, but its expansion is being offset by erosion around the edges.

The island is expected to fol-low a route laid out by Surtsey, an island that emerged from the sea in 1963, around 30 kilometres

from the coast of Iceland. The UN Educational, Scien-

tific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) World Heritage spot is known globally as an outstand-ing example of a pristine natural laboratory where researchers have been able to trace the evolu-tion of a habitat.

“Since they began studying the island in 1964, scientists have observed the arrival of seeds carried by ocean currents, the ap-pearance of moulds, bacteria and fungi, followed in 1965 by the first vascular plant,” UNESCO says on its website.

“By 2004, (vascular plants) numbered 60, together with 75 bryophytes, 71 lichens and 24 fungi. Eighty-nine species of birds have been recorded on Surt-sey, 57 of which breed elsewhere in Iceland. The 141 hectare island is also home to 335 species of invertebrates.”

Not bad for somewhere that has only existed for half a cen-tury.

Nishinoshima might not be quite as quick as Surtsey to establish itself as a teeming wildlife haven -- it is a long way

from mainland Japan and not too close to its neighbours in the Ogasawara island chain, which limits the number of species of birds and seeds that will make it that far.

Nonetheless, it is an exciting blank canvas, said Kachi, and needs to be treated with respect -- which means keeping out foreign invaders that would not naturally drift or fly in.

He said when he conducted a field study on another island in the chain in 2007, his team prepared a fumigated clean room where they packed all research equipment, after making sure everything they had was ei-ther brand new or scrupulously clean.

While Nishinoshima is cur-rently only being monitored from the air, the first field researchers will need to take similar precau-tions.

“Biologists know the busi-ness, but probably the first batch of scientists who will land on the island will be geologists and vulcanologists -- who may not be familiar with the problems,” he said. (afp)

The Benoa Bay reclamation plan with its focus revitalization, according to tourism analyst, Dr. Ni Made Eka Mahadewi, will have a negative impact on the economic, socio-cultural, and environmental aspects of life in Bali. In regards to the economic aspect of the plan, Eka says that a new tourist attractions does not guarantee that the local popula-tion will be employed as tourism workers, given that there is a lim-ited supply of people in Bali who have the education and expertise to work in tourism.

What is needed today are new attractions that take advantantage of existing resources in Bali, such as agriculture, plantations, fisheries and marine activities. That way, local workers can take part and also this approach would allow other regencies in Bali to develop - not just South Badung. “Indeed, the potential of resource development has valuable tourism potential. Bali tourism is associ-ated with cultural, natural and spiritual tourism. By focusing on what is reffered to as “revitaliza-tion” of tourism, (ED. which in fact is more aptly called

‘industrialization of tourism’) will have a negative impact on the economy, poverty, inequality and disadvantage of Balinese people,”

she said. The involvement of investors in

‘revitalization’ under the pretext of economic development will only favour the owners of capital and only takes into account the economic profits while ignoring benefits for the local community. In addition, it will also have an impact on population growth from the arrival of a non-Balinese workforce associated with the new attraction resulting major changes to the local community’s lifestyle.

In terms of socio-cultural as-pects, it cannot be denied that this kind of tourism will result in changes in social habits. Teenag-ers and people of productive age tend to be influenced into sexual promiscuity and drug use when exposed to this type of tourism. Such conditions need to be seri-ously looked at because they not only impact youth in the city of Denpasar, but also those in remote villages.

HIV/AIDS, drug abuse and crime will be a major scourge for Bali in the future if things are left unchecked. “Is Bali not too greedy to even consider creating a new is-land named by way of reclamation with the intention of transforming cultural tourism into ‘revitalization tourism’? If we are talking about

Organized biennially, the 41st ICMM World Congress on Mili-tary Medicine in Bali encompasses sectors such as Military Medicine, Emergency Military Medicine, Healthcare, Military, Medical and Defense.

Delegates from 98 countries comprising top military officials and military doctors were present in the congress.

A transfer of ICMM leadership from Head of the Saudi Arabian Health Center Major General Gha-leb Huraib to Surgeon General of the Indonesia Defense Force Major General TNI Daniel Tjen, MD, took place before Vice President Kalla inaugurated the congress.

During his opening speech, Vice President Kalla voiced his complete

support to the world congress on military medicine to discuss their role in addressing global conflicts and disasters.

“As the chairman of the Indone-sian Red Cross (PMI), I have a lot of experience with military doctors in addressing disasters. When a devastating tsunami hit Aceh in December 2004, military doctors from more than 50 countries came to Aceh,” Kalla pointed out.

Topics of interest to be discussed during the congress will comprise health aspects related to protecting the health of armed forces person-nel, humanitarian assistance and disaster relief, handling chemical-biological-radiological and nuclear disasters, emerging infectious diseases and re-emerging diseases in specific military population, en-vironmental and preventive medi-cines, emergency management of battlefield injuries, military health education and training, and military health promotion and rehabilita-tion. The construction of tourist fa-cilities at Benoa Bay will increase the number of hotel rooms in Bali.

According to Eka, this increase in the number of rooms in Bali would mean that the 80,000 rooms that were recorded in 2010, would be far exceeded in 2015. “Given that even with just 80,000 rooms the average occupancy rate for Bali is 55 percent, with an average stay of 3 days from 10 million (foreign

additional rooms,” added the lec-turer of the STP Nusa Dua Bali.

According to Eka, God created the nature of Bali along with its wealth. On that account, Bali must be maintained as well as possible. (rah)

One soldier was killed by a land mine and two were wounded when troops overran 10 Boko Haram camps on Saturday, said the De-fense Ministry spokesman, Maj. Gen. Chris Olukolade, in a state-ment Sunday night. Olukolade and other Nigerian officials had said Boko Haram’s main fighting force was trapped in the vast Sambisa Forest following a 14-week multi-national offensive that drove them out of dozens of towns and villages where they had declared an Islamic caliphate.

But some must have escaped to press last week’s attack on Giwa Barracks in Maiduguri, the biggest

northeastern city about 200 kilome-ters (125 miles) from the forest.

The forest offensive had de-stroyed some 20 other camps, according to the military, before getting bogged down by land mines and other booby traps laid by the insurgents, soldiers told The As-sociated Press. They insisted on anonymity because they are not authorized to speak to reporters.

“The operation to clear the ter-rorists in Sambisa and other for-ests is continuing as troops in all fronts have been alerted to be on the lookout for fleeing terrorists,” Olukolade said. “The Nigerian Air force is maintaining an active

air surveillance to track the move-ment of terrorists for appropriate action.”

The ground offensive, backed by bombing by jet fighters and cover-ing fire from attack helicopters, had allowed the military to free some 700 girls and women captives. There has been no word on the fate of boys and young men kidnapped by Boko Haram.

The Defense Ministry has made no comment about the latest Boko Haram surge, which killed at least 60 civilians in the past 10 days, half of them villagers who died in army shelling to repulse the Maiduguri attack. (ap)

BERLIN — The Ebola crisis in western Africa showed the world in a painful way that a global catastrophe plan is needed to deal with future epidemics, German Chancellor Angela Merkel said Monday. “The struggle (against Ebola) is only won if there are no new cases and if we have learned the lessons from this crisis: we should have reacted earlier,” Merkel told the 68th World Health Assembly in Geneva.

The World Health Organization has been criticized for its slow response to early warnings about the Ebola outbreak. More than 11,000 people have died in the outbreak since the first cases became public in rural Guinea in March 2014. Merkel said that WHO structures need to become more effi-cient, suggesting that the organization has to become more centralized.

An independent panel of experts is currently looking into the WHO’s slow response to early warnings about the Ebola outbreak. The panel said last week in its first report that “deep and substantial” change is needed at

the World Health Organization. After studying what went wrong in the WHO’s response to the Ebola crisis, the panel said it’s still not clear why the global body took so long to heed warnings.

Looking forward, the chancel-lor said Germany would give 200 million euros ($228 million) to help developing countries build up better-functioning health care systems — which she said was essential to deal with future epidemic outbreaks. She said 70 million euros of this would go specifically to the Ebola-ridden countries in western Africa.

“If we react faster, and act faster, we will manage to better prevent a crisis like Ebola the next time,” Merkel told the assembly, which is the WHO’s decision-making body. It is attended by delegations of all WHO member states and meets annually in Geneva, Switzerland. Ebola continues to spread in Guinea and Sierra Leone, while Liberia was declared Ebola-free earlier this month. (ap)

BEIJING — China on Monday rejected Vietnam’s protest over Beijing’s seasonal fishing ban in the South China Sea, underscoring their dispute over ownership of islands and marine resources in the area.

Foreign Ministry spokesman Hong Lei said the summer mora-torium was an annual event and that China was merely fulfilling its international responsibilities and obligations to conserve fish stocks. “China’s position on the South China Sea is consistent and clear,” Hong told reporters.

Vietnam had issued a statement late Saturday criticizing the ban as a “worthless decision” and reasserting Vietnam’s claim to the disputed Paracel Islands and their surrounding waters.

Tensions spiked a year ago when China parked a giant oil rig near the islands. Anti-China demonstrations in Vietnam left at least four Chinese dead, while ships from the sides sparred in

the waters surrounding the rig.The rig’s deployment was seen

as part of a Chinese strategy to strengthen its footprint in the South China Sea, where China’s extensive claims overlap with territory claimed by Vietnam, the Philippines, Taiwan, Malaysia and Brunei.

Despite its tough talk, the gov-ernment in Hanoi has limited op-tions, considering Beijing’s mas-sive military and huge financial resources. Vietnamese officials are believed to be split between a fac-tion that favors a tough line against Beijing and stronger ties with the U.S. and one that favors a quiet compromise with China.

China has faced growing criti-cism over its island reclamation drive, with frictions over the issue clouding a visit to Beijing by U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry over the weekend. (ap)

many militants and captured heavy weaponry in the northeastern Sambisa Forest. This comes after a surge in attacks by the Islamic extremists including suicide bombings, assaults on a busi-ness school and villages and a repelled night-time raid by hundreds of fighters on the biggest military base in northeast Nigeria.

TABANAN - Crab pest is one of the greatest enemies for farmers at Subak Mumbu at Kukuh village, Kerambitan. Unavoidably, every planting season arrives the yellow crab will gobble the newly sown seeds by farmers. More seriously, the clawed animal living under-ground also causes the subak irri-gation channel to leak. The newly repaired irrigation channel some time ago has been damaged again due to the act of the crab pest.

It was revealed by the chief of Subak Mumbu, Muliarta, when met amid the harvest season some time ago. He said that he was deeply

confused in dealing with the crab pest. Moreover, the farmers at Subak Mumbu do not know the natural predator of the crab. “It is poisonous crab so that it is not edible,” he said.

The only way that can be done by farmers is to get rid of the crabs by using pesticide named Matarin. Admittedly the use of this pesticide is not good for the quality of water and soil in the future. However, he continued, unless using pesticide, the rice harvest of farmers can fail because of the newly sown seed will be gobbled by crabs. “Before sowing, farmers here must spread pesticide to kill crabs. Otherwise,

within one day the newly sown seeds will be eaten up,” he said.

According to Muliarta, this con-dition started to happen in several planting seasons. Moreover, the crabs perforate the subak irrigation chan-nel. “We get assistance worth IDR 50 million for irrigation channel repair. But after being repaired, it has been damaged again by the crabs,” he said. He just hoped there will be somebody that knows how to eliminate the crabs naturally because the farmers at Subak Mumbu do not know about the natural predator of the crab.

Other than crab problem, local farmers at Subak Mumbu are also

faced with the availability of water, chiefly during dry season. If they do not get water, about 2-3 hectares of the 60 hectares of the agricultural land at Subak Mumbu become dormant. “In dry season, a few hectares of land typically cannot get water, so that it becomes dormant,” said Muliarta. Average rice production per hectare of the paddy field at Subak Mumbu with 185 members can reach 6 tons. About 60 percent of the farmers har-vest their own grain, while the rest is done by harvesting laborer. “The grain for self-consumption is usually harvested by farmers themselves, but the grain for sale is harvested by

laborer,” he said Muliarta. He acknowledged that farmers

find it easier to sell grain through middlemen than self-harvest. When calculated in terms of expenditure, the cost of self-harvesting is much greater than through middlemen. “Selling through middlemen gets certain price. Farmers here can get IDR 150,000 per 100 square meters,” he said. If farmers are un-able to do by themselves, they must hire harvesting laborer for IDR 90,000 per day. Moreover, when calculated, according to Muliarta, it is more profitable to sell through middlemen. (kmb24)

Heavy equipment was seen working to flatten the kiosk build-ings in front of the market. Scat-tered debris of the buildings has been transported by a truck and dumped in the southern market. In the meantime, some stalls on the first floor of the market looked to have started to open, though re-mained to lack of buyers.

The Head of the Bangli Industry and Trade Agency, Nengah Sudibia, when met at the local market said that the relocation of traders to the art market has been doing since

Wednesday (May 13). Traders that were initially unwilling to move eventually dismantled their own stall. On Saturday (May 16), his party deployed a unit of heavy equipment to help flatten the former building of the traders.

Sudibya described that the re-location of traders can be finally realized following the agreement related to the kiosk rental price made between the kiosk owners and the government of Bangli. “About nine days ago, the regent came down and met the traders in person.

Having been given direction, the traders finally moved to the market. We agreed the rental price at IDR 700,000 per year,” he explained.

Sudibya recognized that the rental price agreed actually remains very little compared to the previous government draft. However, the government is forced to take this win-win solution in order to smooth the restructuring plan of the chaotic Penelokan. In addition, the small rental price is forced to be agreed because traders still do not enjoy the presence of the market.

He said that the rental price of the market will be re-evaluated after operating for a year. “We will evaluate the rental price of the mar-ket. The policy of the government of Bangli giving such amount of rental price will be surely evaluated by the inspectorate and other agen-cies,” he said.

Until Sunday, the area in front of the market remained in the process of flattening, so that not all the traders can remove to the kiosk. His party still tolerated a number of traders to sell along the sidewalks at Penelokan. They will be relocated to the market after all the flattening process of the former buildings has been completed. “This flattened land will be transformed into park-ing lot. When the main budget does

not allow, we will allocate the ar-rangement in the amended regional budget,” he added.

As reported over the years, after the completion in 2014, the occupa-tion of the geopark art market was uncertain due to the difficulty of reaching the agreement on rental price between the government of Bangli and dozens of traders or stall owners in front of the market. Trad-ers insist on asking for the rental price of IDR 300,000 per year, while the government of Bangli has the calculation if the rental price is worth IDR 2.7 million per unit per year. Dozens of kiosk owners refused the desire of local govern-ment because they consider the land they occupy is their own private land. (kmb40)

Dozens of traders finally occupy Geopark art market

BANGLI - Dozens of traders who originally sold in the kiosks at Penelokan finally began to occupy the Geopark art market. It is based on the agreement between the traders and the gov-ernment of Bangli related to the amount of kiosk rental price at IDR 700,000 per year. In the meantime, a number of kiosks originally hampered by the Geopark market seem to have been flattened to be used as for vehicle parking area.

BEIJING — The owner of fashion brands Gucci and Yves Saint Laurent has accused Alibaba Group in a lawsuit of profiting from sales of counterfeit goods de-spite the Chinese e-commerce giant’s pledge to combat the trade in fakes.

The lawsuit filed by France’s Kering SA and a group of its brands in a New York court is a setback for Ali-baba’s effort to reassure companies and regulators it is taking effective action to keep counterfeit goods off its online sales platforms.

Alibaba said it believes the complaint has “no basis” and said the company will fight it. In a statement, Ali-baba said it has a “strong track record” of cooperating with brands to protect their intellectual property.

Kering filed suit against US-listed Alibaba in a New York court last week for selling counterfeits of its prod-ucts worldwide, Chinese state media reported.

Kering’s portfolio of luxury and lifestyle brands include Saint Laurent, Alexander McQueen and Puma, according to its website.

Copyright infringement is rife in China, but Alibaba said it planned to fight the case.

“Unfortunately, Kering Group has chosen the path of wasteful litigation instead of the path of constructive cooperation,” an Alibaba spokeswoman said in a state-ment provided to AFP.

“We believe this complaint has no basis and we will fight it vigorously,” it said.

Alibaba’s Taobao platform is estimated to hold more than 90 percent of the consumer-to-consumer market in China, while its Tmall.com is believed to command over half the Chinese market for business-to-consumer transactions.

State media said that Kering filed an earlier lawsuit against Alibaba in July last year but dropped it after the two companies agreed to work together to reduce counterfeiting.

“We continue to work in partnership with numerous brands to help them protect their intellectual property and we have a strong track record of doing so,” Alibaba said in its statement on Monday.

In January, the State Administration for Industry and Commerce (SAIC), which regulates market order in China, delivered an unusual dressing down of the promi-nent company, publishing a survey saying only about a third of products sampled from Alibaba’s consumer-to-consumer marketplace Taobao were genuine.

“We have always been committed to combating fake products and have devoted our efforts to solving this difficult problem,” Alibaba founder Jack Ma said in a meeting with SAIC after the survey was released. (ap/afp)

late Sunday, as fighting raged between Shiite Huthi rebels and loyalists of exiled president Abe-drabbo Mansour Hadi.

And Islamic State fighters have seized the Iraqi city of Ra-madi in a deadly three-day blitz, with the effective loss of the capital of Iraq’s largest province

becoming Baghdad’s worst mili-tary setback since it started claw-ing back land from the jihadists late last year.

Vandana Hari, editorial direc-tor at global commodity informa-tion provider Platts, said the oil market remains “volatile” due to geopolitical tensions in the

Middle East. “Traders are keeping a close

eye on the situation in that region as it has an impact on global oil supply,” said Hari.

Yemen is not a major oil-pro-ducing country, but its coast forms one side of the Bab el-Mandeb Strait, the key strategic entry point into the Red Sea through which some 4.7 million barrels of oil pass each day on ships headed to

or from the Suez Canal.Baghdad is almost entirely

dependent on oil revenues and falling crude prices have hit it hard at a time when its expendi-tures have increased because of the battle against IS.

Analysts say however that any gains in oil prices are being capped by continued concerns over a global oversupply in the face of weaker demand. (afp)

Oil prices up in Asian tradeSINGAPORE - Oil prices rose in Asia Monday as fresh tensions in Yemen and Iraq raised

concerns about a supply disruption in the crude-rich Middle East, analysts said.

The Head of the Klungkung Social of Labor Agency, I.B. Anom Adnyana, admitted the increasing unemployment rate every year. In accordance with the data of the agency, the 1,508 job seekers in 2013 have increased to 1,908 in 2014. Starting at the beginning of January 2015 up to now, the job seekers have been recorded to

reach 381.According to I.B. Anom, some

jobseekers cannot be absorbed in the job market is caused by the infe-rior quality of the human resources that does not meet the needs of a number of companies. As a result, the job opportunities are still open and cannot be met. He explained that his party continues to make an

effort so that the job seekers can improve their quality. However, such an effort can only be made in limited quantities.

Of the job opportunities avail-able, according to I.B. Anom, the position as chef and spa therapist is so far still required. The posi-tion of spa therapist is available at home and overseas. His party

also targets that the absorption of job seekers will penetrate overseas vacancy. This is done by providing training for spa therapists followed by training of foreign language. “We want to send labor that really fits the needs. The training is not only focused on skills, but also on foreign language to facilitate their communication,” he said.

On the other hand, the restricted budget causes the unemployment handling effort to reach a lim-ited number of participants. Of the thousands of current job seekers, only dozens attend the activities.

“We can only give limited training in accordance with the existing budget, so that not all job seekers can be involved in this training,” he explained.

Nevertheless, his party will try to increase the number of job seekers to be involved in the training. Besides, the training will also be conducted so that the job seekers can open their own job opportunities such as makeup services, motor repair and other entrepreneurship training. Ac-cording to him, the enthusiasm of people to attend the training activity is high. (dwa)

NEGARA - Right on the week-end of long holiday, Sunday (May 17), the crossing traffic at Gili-manuk Harbor was remarkably crowded. Thousands of vehicles from Bali thronged the Gilimanuk Harbor. Similarly, the traffic enter-ing Bali through the Ketapang Har-bor also boosted dramatically.

Since Saturday night (May 16), the traffic coming out of Bali, es-pecially cars and freight vehicles, were lining to reach outside area of the Gilimanuk Harbor. To avoid long lines, security forces applied traffic arrangement like during the

backflow of Idul Fitri last year.Chief of Gilimanuk Water Po-

lice, Nyoman Wirya Sucipta, with permission from the Jembrana Police Chief told reporters that vehicles leaving Bali are quite crowded. To that end, his party ap-plies the pattern as applied during the Idul Fitri backflow so that there is no congestion. “Despite crowded, it remains to move smoothly,” he explained.

Diversion of vehicles is also meant to anticipate the congested vehicles. On the other hand, vehicles coming to Bali were dominated by

private cars and tourist buses trans-porting the group of students on holiday to Bali. As seen on Sunday afternoon (May 17), crowded pas-sengers looked to get off the ship at Gilimanuk. From the information at the ASDP Gilimanuk, the growing number of passengers traveling to Bali has been seen from three days before or a long holiday weekend. The number of passengers is domi-nated by school students spending holiday in Bali in group. The ASDP has prepared a total of 30 vessels to serve the surging passengers both the outgoing and incoming to Bali.

Other than coinciding with the end-ing of the National Examination, as predicted it is also coupled with the long weekend holiday. The surge of passengers traveling to Bali still occurs up to a week ahead.

Business Manager of the ASDP Gilimanuk, Wahyudi Susianto, said on Saturday (May 16) that the num-ber of pedestrian passenger reached 1,072 people, motorcycle (2,932 units), sedan (2,080 units), buses (215 units), large buses (564 units) and freight vehicles (1,059 units). Under normal condition, it ranges from 150-175 units of bus, medium

bus (over 100) and private car (over 700 units). However, based on the existing data, the number of freight vehicles declined when compared to normal days. On the other hand, the Chief of Gilimanuk Harbormaster, Nyoman Daelon W, said that even though the currents in the Bali Strait are quite swift, the crossing during the holiday backflow runs quite smoothly. While continuing to co-ordinate with the National Weather Service (BMKG), the harbormaster appealed to the skippers to be care-ful because the weather can change any time. (kmb26)

Unemployment rate continues to increaseSEMARAPURA - Each year the unemployment rate in Klungkung constantly increases.

Throughout the years, the number of job seekers recorded by the Klungkung Social of Labor Agency averagely reaches more than one thousand people. Inferior quality of human resources in Klungkung is suspected to be the cause why they cannot be absorbed in the job market. On the other hand, the limited budget to provide guidance for job seekers makes the effort to al-leviate the unemployment unrealized.

Nearly 3,000 migrants have swum to shore or been rescued off Indonesia, Malaysia and Thailand over the past week, around half of whom have arrived in Indonesia’s western province of Aceh.

The three nations have sparked outrage by turning away some overloaded vessels, and thou-sands of migrants are still be-lieved to be stranded at sea after a Thai crackdown disrupted long-established people-smuggling and -trafficking routes.

The migrants who have made it to shore in Indonesia have mostly been rescued by fishermen, and grim tales have emerged of deadly fights on board and harsh treatment by people-smugglers.

On Sunday the Indonesian navy stopped a boat from entering its waters after the vessel was spotted

heading across the Malacca Strait from the direction of Malaysia, Indonesian armed forces spokes-man Fuad Basya told AFP.

After radio communication with the boat, it turned back from Indonesia, he said, adding it was not physically pushed back. Basya said it was believed the boat was carrying more mi-grants, although he was not sure how many.

“It was heading to Indonesian waters from Malaysia and was denied entry,” Basya said. “It was intercepted, and we stopped it from passing.”

A week ago the navy stopped a boat carrying hundreds of mi-grants from entering Indonesia, and the military insists it will only help vessels in distress.

Basya said four warships and

one plane were now patrolling off Aceh’s coast to stop migrant boats from entering, up from one warship and a plane around a week ago.

“The boats are forbidden from entering Indonesia,” he said.

On Friday fishermen rescued hundreds of migrants from a sink-ing boat off Aceh, on the huge island of Sumatra. Fighting had erupted on board between the Rohingya, a persecuted Muslim minority from Myanmar and the Bangladeshis, and many leapt or were thrown overboard.

Southeast Asian nations are under growing pressure to take action to stem the influx of boatpeople, and Malaysia, cur-rent chair of regional grouping ASEAN, on Sunday pressed Myanmar to engage in talks on the issue. (afp)

JAKARTA - Indonesian President Joko Widodo (Jokowi) has urged law enforcers to eradicate piracy in the creative industry by arresting the members of the piracy mafia in a bid to develop the industry in the country.

“I have ordered the Indonesian Police chief to handle the issue seriously,” the president remarked on Monday.

The president welcomed the representatives of the Indonesian Recording Industry Association (Asiri) and the Indonesian Song Creators and Singers Association at the State Palace in Jakarta.

Jokowi has urged the Police to arrest the members of the piracy mafia.

“We will not only arrest those selling pirated CDs on the streets and in stores but also the deal-ers who supply them to the street vendors and store owners,” Jokowi affirmed.

The government will arrest the big players involved in piracy in the creative industry rather than

solely taking action against pirated CD vendors operating on a smaller scale.

The president emphasized that the government will handle piracy in the creative industry on the similar lines as their approach to eradicating illegal fishing.

“There are seven thousand for-eign vessels who conduct illegal fishing. Drugs kill 50 people on a daily basis, which is considered normal. But for me, it is not normal,” Jokowi pointed out.

The president stated that Indone-sia should also eradicate the oil and gas mafia. Jokowi urged the Police to investigate several criminal cases that are not considered normal, in-cluding those related to corruption.

The president said he has in-structed the Police to work on the cases a week before.

“Illegal fishing vessels operated in Maluku as though it was a night market. I ordered to capture and sink them, and now, illegal fishing operations have stopped,” Jokowi added. (ant)

JAKARTA - The Investment Coordinating Board (BKPM) has received an investment com-mitment worth US$16.7 billion during a business forum with Chinese investors in Beijing, China, Thursday (May 14).

At least five Chinese inves-tors plan to invest in Indonesia, BKPM Chief Franky Sibarani noted in a statement on Mon-day.

Of the US$16.7 billion com-mitment, investors have sought principle permits for projects valued at US$700 million and have earmarked $16 bi l l ion for exploring projects in the sectors of energy, mining, and infrastructure, as well as the processing and automotive in-dustries.

The business forum was aimed at providing firsthand informa-

tion to Chinese businessmen about the potential areas of investment and procedures in Indonesia,” he stated.

Moreover, i t was also ex-pected to increase the value of realized Chinese investment in Indonesia, he emphasized.

The trend of investment plans in Indonesia has increased over the past f ive years to reach US$23.4 billion.

However, the realization is very small and is only seven percent of the plan.

The BKPM has planned to open a representative office in China to increase the realization of Chinese investment plans in Indonesia, he added.

The business forum was at-tended by 120 businessmen, mostly Chinese businessmen and some other foreigners. (ant)

Parwata said he was grateful that the government canceled the fuel price hike. When fuel price rises, the cost of production au-tomatically goes up which would obvisouly make things even harder for SMEs. Also SMEs involved in export- specifically crafts produced in Bali, have not been optimally supported.

According to Parwata, the eco-nomic structure of Bali is built on the tourism sector. Therefor, the government should provide stimu-lus to these SMEs because they support the tourism sector. The synergy between these two sectors must be enhanced so as to increase exports from SMEs.

“This support must be concrete. I do hope that the government can actively provide motivation. Oth-erwise, the economy will plummet. We should begin by boosting craft exports so that the SME sector in Bali can be more passionate and contribute more to the economy of Bali. The

solution is to encourage coop-eration between SMEs and the tourism sector,” said this Badung legislator.

So far, the SME sector is still constrained by classic problems such as capital, marketing and human resources. Because many SMEs do not have access to chan-nels that could provide solutions, to their various problems, many of them simply go out of business.

Wayan Suweta, a potter from Binoh hamlet, Ubung Kaja village, Denpasar, attested to this.

Suweta recently said that it

seems a shame that more and more crafters are going bankcrupt despite the tremendous potential that pot-tery products have as decoration for hotels and restaurants.

Chairman of the Kriya Amertha Business Group of Binoh hamlet mentioned that the main constraint that they face is limited human re-sources and difficulty finding raw materials. In order to survive in the current condition, the Kriya Amer-tha Business Group has created a cooperative to help the economy of the artisans.

The government is implement-ing various other programs to help SMEs. Municipality of Denpasar, for example, has launched the is-suance of the Permit on the Micro and Small Enterprises (IUMK) program.

According to the Head of the Denpasar Cooperatives and SMEs Agency, Made Erwin Suryadarma Sena, the IUMK card aims to pro-vide legal certainty for SMEs so that they can more easily access banking services and guidance from the government.

Also, in order to expand the SME market, the Municipality of Denpasar has also launched a program aimed at boosting SMEs by marketing artisan’s products through the government’s website to major events.

Recently, the sustainability of the market expansion for SMEs, also involved cooperation with the GAPURA Google Online pro-gram that provides assistance for SMEs in marketing their products. (kmb25)

An Osprey caught fire after a hard landing on Sunday at Bellows Air Force Station on Hawaii’s main island of Oahu, killing one Marine and sending 21 others to hospitals.

“From the (Okinawan) residents’ point of view, Osprey deployment is not acceptable to begin with,” Onaga told a televised news con-ference. “The significance of this crash is extremely big. We seek an adequate investigation into the cause and an explanation, and of course eventually demand the withdrawal of Ospreys.”

Onaga said he plans to demand that the U.S. military suspend all Osprey flights on Okinawa until the authorities determine the cause of the latest accident.

The U.S. military says the Os-prey is safe but Okinawans have worried that it may be prone to crashes. Anti-U.S. military sen-timent is particularly high on Okinawa, home to half of the about 50,000 American troops based

in Japan under bilateral security treaty. Many complain about noise and crime linked to U.S. bases on the island.

The U.S. operates 24 Ospreys on Okinawa and announced a week ago that 10 more would be deployed to Yokota Air Base near Tokyo beginning in 2017.

The first three are to arrive in Yokota in the second half of 2017, with the remainder to be deployed by 2021. The announcement im-mediately prompted opposition from Japanese residents near the base, with dozens protesting over the weekend.

Separately, Japan’s Defense Ministry plans to buy 17 Ospreys for deployment at Japanese Self-Defense Forces bases over the next few years, although the exact loca-tions have not been released. The U.S. Defense Security Cooperation Agency in early May announced the State Department has approved a possible sale to Japan of V-22B

Blok C Osprey aircraft and related equipment and logistical support for an estimated $3 billion.

Japanese Chief Cabinet Secre-tary Yoshihide Suga told a regular news conference Monday that he believes the aircraft is safe, but asked the U.S. side to promptly provide information about the ac-cident.

Officials from six municipalities near the Yokota base have demand-ed the Japanese government do more to provide information about the aircraft and the accident. Os-preys on Okinawa are deployed at the U.S. Marine Corps Air Station Futenma, which is at the center of a longstanding relocation dispute.

Tokyo and Washington agreed in 1996 to relocate the base, which is now in a densely populated part of the island, to another location on Okinawa to address safety and nuisance complaints. Many Okinawans want Futenma moved completely off the island. (ap)

ADDIS ABABA — Two hun-dred suspected human smugglers have been detained as part of the Ethiopian government’s efforts to stem the number of citizens trying to illegally migrate to Europe, a senior official said.

The government is looking for 80 other alleged smugglers who are conducting overseas operations, Ethiopian Federal Affairs Minister Shiferaw Teklemariam told the Ethi-opian News Agency late Sunday.

“The detentions are part of the government’s efforts to bring perpe-trators to justice,” he said. “People should understand the fact that il-legal migration is costing lives and leaving many injured. The youth in particular should stop considering migrating as an option and we are carrying out works to help in job creation at home.”

Molla Abo, the mayor of the city

of Hosaena in southern Ethiopia, said many suspected human smug-glers from the region have been arrested in the past few weeks.

“This is besides the education we are providing to the youth, parents and religious leaders about the problems of illegal migration,” he said.

Along with neighbor Eritrea, Ethiopia is the source of many of the migrants making the perilous journey by sea to Europe, often via Sudan and then Libya.

Ethiopia is drafting a new law to stiffen punishments for human traf-ficking in an attempt to stem a wave of dangerous migrations to Europe, the Ministry of Justice said.

Ethiopia’s current laws stipulate prison terms ranging from five to 20 years for crimes related to human smuggling and a maximum fine of $2,500. (ap)

Japanese worry over Osprey safety after fatal US air crash

TOKYO — A fatal crash of a U.S. Marine Corps Osprey in Hawaii has renewed safety concerns in Japan, where more of the hybrid aircraft are to be deployed. Gov. Takeshi Onaga on the southern island of Okinawa said Monday that flights of Ospreys should be suspended until the cause of the crash is found. The tilt-rotor MV-22 Osprey can take off and land like a helicopter but flies like an airplane.

The Rockets needed an epic come-back to overcome a 19-point third-quar-ter deficit and force Game 7. No such heroics were needed Sunday when they were up by 17 after three and Howard opened the fourth quarter with a 3-point play to push it to 88-68.

Blake Griffin scored five points in a 9-0 run to cut the lead to eight points with less than 2 1/2 minutes remaining. Harden made a pair of free throws after that, but a dunk by DeAndre Jordan got the Clippers within eight again. This time Trevor Ariza hit a 3 from the corner to secure the victory. Griffin had 27 points and Chris Paul had 26 points and 10 assists. The Western Conference finals begin Tuesday night at Golden State. Ariza finished with 22 points and made six 3-pointers.

Every fan in the arena was given a red shirt emblazoned with the words “Clutch City” in yellow letters, bringing back the moniker of the 1994 and ‘95 teams that won back-to-back titles. These Rockets lived up to the nickname, winning their third straight game to become the first team to win a playoff series after trailing 3-1 since the Phoenix Suns did it in 2006 against the Lakers.

After taking a two-game lead after four games the Clippers looked destined to be heading to the conference finals for the first time in franchise history. But they failed in all three chances to put Houston away and are now left to ponder their collapse as they head home early yet again.

Los Angeles never led, but tied it at twice in the first 4 minutes. The Clippers insisted Saturday that they’d gotten over Thursday’s loss, but looked listless early in this one as Houston built the lead.

Little went right for the Clippers for most of the game and when a dunk by Jordan early in the fourth quarter simply bounced out of the rim, the big man could only look at the basket in disgust. The frustration was evident with Paul too, as he angrily threw the ball after picking up an offensive foul later in the fourth. (ap)

ROME - Novak Djokovic boost-ed his hopes of completing a career Grand Slam at Roland Garros after he lived up to his top billing at the Italian Open by brushing aside old rival Roger Federer in the final on Sunday. After dropping a set in each of his three previous matches in Rome, the world number one showed that he was back to his best as he humbled Federer 6-4 6-3 to capture his fifth title of the year.

Earlier, Russian Maria Sharapo-va ground down Carla Suarez Na-varro 4-6 7-5 6-1 to claim the 35th WTA Tour victory of her career. Djokovic and Federer were meet-ing for the 39th time and top seed Djokovic narrowed his opponent’s overall lead to 20-19.

With one week to go until the French Open, the Serb extended his unbeaten run to 22 matches as he added to the Australian Open, Indian Wells, Miami and Monte Carlo titles he has won this season. “So far, this is the best season of my life,” Djokovic, who needs to win the French Open to complete his grand slam collection, told re-porters. “I don’t know how it will go at Roland Garros, but I’m very confident.

“I’m playing with great joy

and concentration and I hope to continue. “This has been a very exciting week and today was my best match. It’s always a big chal-lenge to play Roger and obviously I’m very pleased.” World number two Federer admitted there was not much he could do. “Novak was rock-solid today, he played great throughout. He made very few unforced errors. I’m happy, feeling good and healthy.”

The first set went with serve until the final game when Djokovic rifled a return winner that clipped the edge of the tramline and converted his first set point.

The Serb never looked in danger after breaking again in the second game of the second set and wrapped up the title when Federer hit a fore-hand out on match point.

Third seed Sharapova looked sluggish against her Spanish op-ponent in the first set and Suarez Navarro fought back from 1-3 and 3-5 down in the second to level at 5-5.

But Sharapova reeled off the next two games and tore through the decider against the tiring 10th seed, sealing victory in more than two and a half hours with her 39th winner. (ap)

HOUSTON — James Harden scored 31 points, and Dwight Howard had 16 points and 15 rebounds as the Houston Rockets never trailed in a 113-100 victory over the Los Angeles Clippers on Sunday, sending them to the Western Conference finals for the first time since 1997. It’s the ninth time in NBA history that a team has overcome a 3-1 series deficit to win a playoff series.

A year after not winning a major title for the first time in six seasons, Luis Enrique’s side now has a chance to win another treble, with the final of the Champions League and the Copa del Rey coming up.

“We’re very happy of this glorious era with so many titles,” said Barcelona midfielder Sergio Busquets. “Last year we weren’t up to the chal-lenge to win any competitions, but this year we are on a good path and this is only the first. This winning era hadn’t ended. What Pep Guardiola started with Messi, Xavi, Iniesta is still going. We have one title now and are two more wins away from a historic season.”

Real Madrid will finish runner-up despite Cristiano Ronaldo scoring a hat trick in a 4-1 win at Espanyol. It trails Barcelona by four points with one round left. Atletico, which won the title last year in a winner-take-all finale at Barcelona, was left in third place.

While Barcelona’s players hopped with arms interlocked forming a ring in the middle of the Vicente Calderon pitch, the club’s coach indulged in a heartfelt embrace with his staff on the sideline. After a rocky start to his first year in charge, Barcelona won the league on the back of an excellent second half of the season as Luis Enrique steered the team to 18 wins in the last 20 rounds.

Luis Enrique can now match Guardiola’s coaching debut with three titles of his own. Barcelona hosts Athletic Bilbao in the cup final on May 30, and then turns to facing Italian champion Juventus in the Champions League final in Berlin on June 6.

“I think of everyone who has formed part of the club form the start of the season, and above all our fans,” said Luis Enrique. “This is our

chance to make our fans happy, nothing more. It’s time to celebrate. Whether this is the start of a winning era, that’s just a cliche. We have two more finals now, and we will see. If we do win them it will be because our players will demonstrate they are the better side.”

With Suarez out nursing a left hamstring injury, Messi moved into the center of Barcelona’s at-tack and had four shots in the first 20 minutes before clipping the crossbar with a free kick. Barcelona kept up the pressure until Messi and Pedro finally broke down Atletico’s defense, when the Argentina forward used his left boot to fire the ball inside the post for his 41st league goal of the season and his 54th in as many games in all competi-tions.

“Again, Messi was the best and marked the difference,” said Atletico captain Gabi Fernan-dez. Ronaldo’s goals— he leads the league with 45— were once again not enough for Madrid to better Messi’s Barcelona, and Carlo Ancelotti’s team will end the season without a major title.

Moments after Ronaldo completed his hat trick at Espanyol, Barcelona fans began flocking to the center of the Catalan capital to celebrate. Chants of “Messi! Messi!” were heard from the heart of the party at Barcelona’s famous “Las Ramblas.”

Messi now has seven league titles with Barcelona. Ronaldo, meanwhile, has won one for Madrid in six seasons. “Congratulations

to Barcelona,” said Ancelotti. “Real Madrid always plays to win, but we weren’t able to do so this season.”

Elsewhere on Sunday, fourth-place Valen-cia’s Nicolas Otamendi salvaged a 1-1 draw at home with Celta Vigo, while Sevilla remained one point behind after fighting back 2-1 over relegation-threatened Almeria. Eibar also stayed in the drop zone after drawing 1-1 at Getafe, while already relegated Cordoba fell 2-1 to Rayo Vallecano.

Granada rolled to a 3-0 victory at David Moyes’ Real Sociedad for a third

win in as many games under coach Jose Sandoval, while Deportivo La Coruna beat Levante 2-0 as both winners boosted their chances of staying up.

Athletic Bilbao erased Jonathas’ two goals to rally for a 3-2 win at Elche and move into seventh place, while Malaga fell into eighth after losing 2-1 at sixth-place Villarreal. (ap)

MADRID - If there is one lesson Real Madrid coach Carlo Ancelotti has learned during his two seasons in Spain it is that resting on your laurels is not an option at the world’s richest club by income. After lead-ing Real to a record-extending 10th European crown and a King’s Cup triumph last term, Real have failed to win any of the three major tro-phies in 2014-15 and speculation has already been swirling for weeks about the Italian’s future.

Club director Emilio Butragueno pointedly refused to confirm An-celotti will see out his contract, which runs for another season, after Real were knocked out of the Champions League by Juventus on Wednesday.

The former Real and Spain forward did so again following Barcelona’s victory at Atletico Madrid on Sunday, which secured a fifth La Liga title in seven years with a game to spare for Real’s arch rivals, who are also through to the finals of the Champions League and King’s Cup.

They are on course to repeat 2009’s historic treble, something neither Real or any other Spanish club have achieved. “It is not some-thing to be said now,” Butragueno told Spanish television when asked

about Ancelotti’s future. “And this is not the place either,” he added. “There is one match left and after that we’ll see.”

Ancelotti is a vastly experienced coach, having won the Champions League twice previously while in charge at AC Milan, and appears to be taking it all in his stride.

He had to watch Real’s 4-1 vic-tory at Espanyol on Sunday from the stands due to a touchline ban and was captured on television calmly smoking a cigarette during the game. Among names to have been linked with his job are Borus-sia Dortmund coach Juergen Klopp, who is leaving the Bundesliga side at the end of the season.

Jose Mourinho, Rafa Benitez and Julen Lopetegui have also been mentioned, while it seems too early for former Real and France great Zinedine Zidane to step up from his current post as assistant coach of Real’s B team.

Ancelotti hinted he would con-tinue next season. “As always, I would like to win the most im-portant competition, which is the Champions League, but also La Liga,” Ancelotti told reporters. “This year I was very close but we will try again next,” added the 55-year-old. (rtr)

MANCHESTER — Manchester United will probably have to go the longer route to reach the group stage of the Champions League next season. A 1-1 draw with Arsenal on Sunday left United facing a likely fourth-place finish in the Premier League, which will send the team into the final qualify-ing round of the Champions League. And that could mean potential matchups against opposition like Valencia and Monaco to reach the group stage.

“It is always stressful,” Unit-ed manager Louis van Gaal said. “You can meet an opponent who is halfway through a season already. It is not so easy. But I am satisfied we have set our goal (of the top four) and reached that.”

Tyler Blackett’s late own-goal earned Arsenal a point that kept it in third place, two points ahead of United. Arsenal will secure a top-

LISBON, Portugal — Benfica clinched the Portuguese league title on Sunday despite a 0-0 draw at Guimaraes after FC Porto was held 1-1 at Belenenses. Benfica won its first back-to-back titles in 31 years and its 34th league crown in club history after it protected a three-point lead with one round to go. Benfica holds the head-to-head advantage with Porto.

Porto looked set to push the title race to the final round of the season next weekend after Jackson Martinez scored in the 44th min-

ute. But Belenenses’ Tiago Caeiro equalized with five minutes to go to ruin Porto’s title hopes. Benfica led the championship from start to finish, though it shared the lead in the third round.

“It was tough, but we are the deserved winners,” Benfica striker Lima said. “I feel like I have joined the history of the club. It was more difficult than last year, the responsibility was also different because Benfica hadn’t successfully defended its title in 30 years.” Porto, with Spanish

coach Julien Loptegui in his first season, will finish the season without a trophy for the first time since 1989.

Guimaraes will head to the Europa League next season along with Braga after securing fifth place despite the loss. Gil Vicente was relegated after losing to the already-relegated Penafiel 2-1.

Elsewhere, it was: Sporting 4, Braga 1; Setubal 2, Arouca 1; Pacos Ferreira 3, Academica 2; Maritimo 4, Rio Ave 0, and Mor-eirense 1, Estoril 1. (ap)

ORLANDO, Florida — Brazil mid-fielder Kaka scored one goal and set up another as Major League Soccer newcomer Orlando City beat the Los Angeles Galaxy 4-0 on Sunday for the first home win in team history. Orlando City held its first lead at home — in six games — in front of 40,122 fans.

Eric Avila’s header put Orlando City on the board in the 12th minute after Rafael Ramos crossed a ball to Brek Shea at the far post, who headed it back in front of goal

to an open Avila. In the 34th minute, rookie Cyle Larin scored after a nice back-and-forth breakaway with Kaka for his fourth goal of the year.

In the second half, Kaka scored from a penalty in the 56th minute after he was tripped up in the area by goalkeeper Jaime Penedo. Darwin Ceren made it 4-0 in the 73rd on a deflected shot.

In the day’s other game, Zach Pfeffer scored in second-half stoppage time as the Philadelphia Union 0beat D.C. United 1-0

to end a four-game losing streak.Philadelphia ended its five-game win-

less streak, while D.C. United, the Eastern Conference leader, had its eight-game undefeated streak stopped.

Fabinho sent in a cross in the 93rd minute that Sebastien Le Toux let play through his legs. Pfeffer settled the ball with his right and slotted a left-footed shot past goalkeeper Bill Hamid at the near post. It was Philadelphia’s first goal since April 25. (ap)

SAO PAULO - Deportivo Tachira have been crowned Venezuelan champions after beating Trujillanos 1-0 in the season’s playoff game.

Jorge Rojas scored the winner for the San Cristobal club after 75 minutes to give Tachira their first title in four years and their eighth overall.

The match was played between the winners of the Abertura and Clausura half-season championships. The first leg at Trujanillos’ stadium ended 0-0. (rtr)

But it is still to do.” Ander Herrera opened the scoring for United in the 30th minute, side-footing home a volley from Ashley Young’s cross.

Barcelona clinches Spanish league title with win at Atletico

BARCELONA — Lionel Messi ended Barcelona’s short-lived tro- phy drought by scoring the goal that clinched the Spanish league title on Sunday, securing a 1-0 win at dethroned cham- pion Atletico Madrid. Messi slotted in the decisive goal in the 65th minute after working a sublime one-two passing combination with Pedro Rodriguez, who started for the injured Luis Suarez. It was Messi’s 41st goal of the season and powered Barcelona to its 23rd league crown — and seventh in the last 11 years — as it re-established itself as the dominant team in Spain.

turned, with 10 goals coming in the team’s last two games. City has ensured qualification for the Champions League’s group stage and a home win over Southampton will secure second place. Wilfried Bony scored in stoppage time on his first return to Swansea since moving to City in January, while Yaya Toure scored two goals and James Milner added the other.

“I feel it’s like my garden here. I know the pitch here so well,” Bony said. “It was a strange mo-ment when I scored. This team did a lot for me — and the fans too.” Swansea came from 2-0 down to pull level thanks to goals by Gylfi Sigurdsson and Bafetimbi Gomis, but conceded twice in the final 16 minutes. The Welsh team will defi-nitely finish eighth and cannot now qualify for the Europa League.

At Old Trafford, United may have bid farewell to its top-three hopes — and also might have said goodbye to its goalkeeper David de Gea. The Spain international hobbled off with a hamstring injury in the second half and is set to miss United’s last match of the season, against Hull.

With Van Gaal acknowledging it will be hard to keep De Gea amid interest from Real Madrid, United’s best player this season may have played his last game for the club.

“He is Spanish, he is Spanish international, now a Spanish club is coming, his girlfriend is Spanish, his father and mother come every week or every two weeks here. So it is difficult,” Van Gaal said.

Radamel Falcao could also have played his last game at Old Traf-ford. The Colombia striker, who is on loan from Monaco, offered a little wave to the crowd after being substituted after 60 minutes and Van Gaal gave no assurance Falcao would be back next season. (rtr)

three finish by winning one of its last two matches — first against Sunder-land on Wednesday and then against West Bromwich Albion on Sunday in the final round of the league.

Arsenal has gone through the Champions League’s qualifying round for the last two seasons and manager Arsene Wenger will be glad to see the back of it. “It takes the pressure off the holidays,” he said. “We have always that in mind when you prepare (for a new sea-son) and it will be great when we do it. But it is still to do.” Ander Herrera opened the scoring for United in the 30th minute, side-footing home a volley from Ashley Young’s cross.

Manchester City is favorite to finish second behind Chelsea after beating Swansea 4-2 to move five points ahead of Arsenal, having played a game more.

(rtr)

(ap)

(ap/afp)

concerns about a supply disruption in the crude-rich Middle East, analysts said.

(kmb26)

(ap)

NUSA DUA - Vice President Jusuf Kalla inaugurated the 41st World Congress on Military Medi-cine organized by the International Committee of Military Medicine (ICMM) at the Nusa Dua Conven-tion Center in Bali, on Monday.

“Given that even with just 80,000 rooms the average occupancy rate for Bali is 55 percent, with an average stay of 3 days from 10 million (foreign

and domestic -Ed.). There for, clearly Bali does not need

additional rooms,” added the lec-turer of the STP Nusa Dua Bali.

According to Eka, God created the nature of Bali along with its wealth. On that account, Bali must be maintained as well as possible. (rah)

The day of course can differ the religious celebration of a temple lasts at least one full day with some temple celebrating for three days while the celebration of Besakih temple, the Mother Temple, is never less than 7 days and most of the time it lasts for 11 days, depending on the importance of the occasion.

(ap)

Like Azalea, Smith and Pharrell also won three awards — the most after Swift.

Smith, who recently had vocal surgery, didn’t attend the show. He wrote his thank you speech
