LAUNCH OF MALTA BOOK FUND

Minister for Education and Employment, Evarist Bartolo and Executive Chairman of the National Book Council, Mark Camilleri, launched the Malta Book Fund with an investment of €40,000.

The Malta Book Fund is an initiative launched by the National Book Council to foster cultural growth in the local book market. The National Book Council noted that there are many authors and publishers who have planned very interesting Melitensia publications of significant cultural, educational and intellectual value, however, said projects may not necessarily be easily profitable due to their very specialised nature, or are rather difficult to publish and distribute due to shortcomings within the infrastructure of the market itself.

€2.5M IN TRAINING FUNDS

Over 2,300 individuals from 450 different enterprises applied for training funds through the Training Aid Framework (TAF2) which was launched by ETC in November 2014. This was revealed recently by Parliamentary Secretary for EU Funds Ian Borg, at the Yacht Marina in Msida. The programme, co-financed by the European Social Fund, had the aim of promoting training and development. The end result would be an improved and more productive workforce which is able to rise to the challenges and adapt as new technologies are introduced.

Borg claimed that a budget of €2.5 million had been allocated to the TAF in order to promote training activities which need to be implemented by the end of June 2015. Dr Borg said that the industry’s need for such initiatives is evidenced by the record number of applications received within an 8-week timeframe, till mid-January 2015, whereby ETC received over 2,389 applications, resulting in 1,800 grants towards 450 different enterprises.

2.

Furthermore, the NBC, in its drive to contribute towards the development of the Maltese book, would also like to support authors and publishers by financing projects to further enhance their skills and capabilities by providing them with grants to attend workshops, courses and cultural initiatives which might help further improve his or her skills and capabilities.

One particular Mediterranean species, known as the Undulate ray (Raja Undulata), is a rare species in the wild, but the Aquarium has made them feel at home and we know this because they are currently releasing egg cases which will hopefully release their young in a couple of months.

Rays are experts at hide and seek !The Malta National Aquarium is home to an array of species of rays which are closely related to the shark family, both known as elasmobranchs which refers to cartilaginous species, in comparison to bony fish.

Each egg is a leathery black eggcase with horny corners, known by the common name "mermaid's purse" (as are the eggcases of other rays, skates and sharks). These often get washed up on the shore in bad weather after having released the young.

Education Minister Evarist Bartolo visits the

Alternative Learning Programme (ALP) centre in Paola

The ALP is a programme where the content is tailor-made for each student through the practice of differentiated learning by the dedicated teachers who are supported by learning support assistants.

Do you have a question you’d like to ask?

Send us an email at [email protected] and we’ll reply with an answer in the next issue of @edukazzjoni MINISTRY FOR EDUCATION AND EMPLOYMENT

The 260 co-ed students following ALP programme learn by doing and therefore the content is based on hands-on sessions which are then accompanied by lessons in the core subjects namely Maths, Maltese and English.

The vocational subjects being taught relate to areas of engineering, community services and performing arts. Such diverse options open up many opportunities to students who are willing to focus on vocational subjects and intend to proceed with their studies in further education institutions such as MCAST and ITS.

Doreen Camilleri I assumed the role of National Coordinator with the European Union Programmes Agency only a month ago and I am thrilled by the prospects offered by Erasmus+ and the impact that the educational programmes offered can have on society at large.

One of EUPA’s goals is to partner with stakeholders on the Islands in order to support and nurture Erasmus+ in Malta.

On taking up the headship of this Agency I set myself two challenging priorities: that of increasing these efforts and that of helping Maltese organisations make the most of the opportunities provided by the Programme, aiming at achieving a greater impact on education, training, youth and sports in the Maltese islands.

These priorities may only be achieved through a robust action plan based on sound marketing and communication backed by close contact with potential beneficiaries through the engagement of practical information workshops, continuous staff and assessors training, and regular research-based analysis.

Throughout, EUPA needs to remain aware of and open to the adoption of best practices identified by the European Commission or highlighted by other National Agencies as wellas to suggestions by beneficiaries within the applicable parameters.

I am committed to reach out to the widest array of beneficiaries possible, with the collaboration of the management and staff at EUPA.
