3rd Sunday in Ordinary Time Today’s first reading, from the book of the prophet Jonah, describes how the city of Nineveh was spared from damnation. Through the story of Jonah, God reveals that he is not only God of the people of Israel but also God for the Gentiles. There are two focal points in today’s gospel from Matthew, namely: proclamation of the Kingdom of God by Jesus, and Jesus’ calling of his first apostles. We are told that Jesus came to Galilee and proclaimed to the people: “The time is fulfilled, the Kingdom of God has come near; repent and believe in the good news”. The scripture readings remind us that, to prepare for the coming of Christ, we need to do two things: (i) repent and (ii) believe in the Good News. “Repentance” means acknowledgement of our sins and turning ourselves to God. Humility leads to a cleansed soul and a readiness to follow guidance of the Holy Spirit, making a person easier to recognize the mark of Jesus’ mission and to accept his teachings. “Belief” or “faith” is acceptance of Jesus’ teaching of the “Good News” which, in the Church’s vocabulary, means the joyful message of the salvation of humankind through our Savior Jesus Christ.

It is therefore evident that the theme of the Liturgy of the Word in today’s mass can be summarized in Jesus’ words: “The Kingdom of God is near; repent and believe in the Good News”.

The Eucharist, Body and Blood of Jesus Christ. The Eucharist or “Holy Communion”, is a Sacrament that is a vital part of Holy Mass, celebrated by Roman Catholics. We believe that during “Holy Mass” (Sacrifice of Praise), bread and wine are placed on the altar. A Priest then recites an Offertory, offering God the Creator the same bread and wine, made with human hands from gifts given to man by God the Creator. The Priest then recites the “Consecration”: the words and acts of Jesus Christ on the

evening of “The Last Supper” at the Jewish Feast of the Passover. After the “Consecration”, it is believed that through the invocation of the Holy Spirit; the bread and wine are transformed into the Flesh and Blood of Jesus Christ. Not visibly seen, but disguised as bread and wine. The Body and Blood of Jesus Christ is then offered to God His Father for the sins of men. Then, under the direction of Jesus Christ as recorded in the Gospels, the Body and Blood hidden and disguised as bread and wine, is consumed. It is the words of Jesus Christ taken literally that has become the whole basis of the Eucharist. “Take this and eat, this is my body, which will be given up for you,” then he took the cup: “This cup is the cup of my blood, the blood of the new and everlasting Covenant, which will be shed so that sins will be forgiven. Do this in memory of me”

(Luke 22). To non-believers and even many Christians of various faiths, the possibility of bread and wine being transformed into the Flesh and Blood of Jesus Christ, is deemed impossible, ridiculous and not true. The atheists simply laugh or give such a notion no thought, whereas skeptical Christians believe Jesus Christ did not mean that the bread and wine were his “Body” and “Blood” in a literal sense. How to interpret the words of Jesus is up to the individual. But, it is wise to at least examine all of the words recorded in Scripture, before any judgment of interpretation should be made. Interpretation by examination is wiser than interpretation in ignorance.

Stories Faith Sharing

Heaven and Hell One day while walking down the street a highly successful person was tragically hit by a bus and she died. Her soul arrived up in heaven where she was met at the Gates of Heaven by St. Peter himself. “Welcome to Heaven,” said St. Peter. “Before you get settled in though, it seems we have a problem. You see, strangely enough, we’ve never once had someone like you make it this far and we’re not really sure what to do with you.” “No problem, just let me in” said the woman. “Well, I’d like to, but I have higher orders. What we’re going to do is let you have a day in Hell and a day in Heaven and then you can choose whichever one you want to spend an eternity in.” “Actually, I think I’ve made up my mind, I prefer to stay in Heaven”, said the woman. “Sorry, we have rules...” And with that St. Peter put the executive in an elevator and it went down – down - down to hell. The doors opened and she found herself stepping out onto the putting green of a beautiful golf course. In the distance was a clubhouse and standing in front of her were all her friends - fellow executives that she had worked with and they were all dressed in evening gowns and cheering for her. They ran up and kissed her on both cheeks and they talked about old times. They played an excellent round of golf and at night went to the clubhouse where she enjoyed an excellent steak and lobster dinner. She met the Devil who was actually a really nice guy (kinda cute, he always is) and she had a great time telling jokes and dancing. She was

having such a good time that before she knew it, it was time to leave. Everybody shook her hand and waved good- bye as she got on the elevator. The elevator went up – up - up and opened back up at the Gates of Heaven and found St. Peter waiting for her. “Now it’s time to spend a day in heaven,” he said. So, she spent the next 24 hours lounging around on clouds and playing the harp and singing. She had a great time and before she knew it her 24 hours were up and St. Peter came and got her. “So, you’ve spent a day in hell and you’ve spent a day in heaven. Now you must choose your eternity,” he said. The woman paused for a second and then replied, “Well, I never thought I’d say this, I mean, Heaven has been really great and all, but I think I had a better time in Hell.” So St. Peter escorted her to the elevator and again she went down – down - down back to Hell. When the doors of the elevator opened she found herself standing in a desolate wasteland covered in garbage and filth. She saw her friends were dressed in rags and were picking up the garbage and putting it in sacks. The Devil came up to her and put his arm around her. “I don’t understand,” stammered the woman, “yesterday I was here and there was a golf course and a clubhouse and we ate lobster and we danced and had a great time. Now all there is a wasteland of garbage and all my friends look miserable.” The Devil looked at her and smiled. “Yesterday we were recruiting you, today.....you’re staff” That story reminds me of a fact of life. Sin is always attractive, if it weren’t we wouldn’t commit sin.

The devil is attractive, he’s kinda cute, as that story said. If he weren’t we could keep well away from him. The woman in the story was deceived. That’s the way it is with the devil and sin. The devil deceives us to make us think that sin is attractive but we discover afterwards that sin damages and did not bring the joy we wanted. The woman in the story was confused, and we in our times we are confused. Sin is inviting us and God is inviting us, we have to choose.

Consider it pure joy, my

brothers and sisters,

whenever you face trials of

many kinds,

because you know that the

testing of your faith

produces perseverance.

Let perseverance finish its

work so that you may be

mature and complete, not

lacking anything.

再耽誤時間,必須立刻有所行動;
