With all my heart, I hope you are healthy and doing well. I heard that Children’s Day is coming up soon. How I longed for Children’s Day when I was a child! Long time before Children’s Day, I thought about the gifts that I wanted to have and places that I wanted to go on my wish list. I wonder how you spend your Children’s Day! In Korea, May is also called, ‘Family’s month’. In Korea where I live, every year in May, we celebrate Children’s day on May 5th and Parent’s Day on May 8th, so children can also express their gratitude and love to their parents. How about there? I believe that every child deserves to be happy. I hope that you will be happy and that your dreams will come true. You can have the strength to overcome any difficulties when you head towards your dream. I will always cheer for your dreams! When I called, you answered me; you made me bold and stouthearted. I imagine what your face would look like when you are reading my letter. I thought your face would be beautiful like a flower. Would you smile beautifully just like a flower, when you read this letter? In Korea, we have a proverb that many blessings come in through smiles. So back in the days in Korea, people used to write this proverb down on as a sign and put it on their gates, hoping that they would smile a lot and be given a lot of blessings during the New Year. So when you smile, you’ve already done something to be blessed. That’s why I want you to smile more and more J Yes, it is very important to express our emotions honestly. But it is more important that you smile and laugh constantly because of joy and blessings from God. Smiling really DOES bring happiness!! [일반-하나님의 섭리] [Regular-God created this world!] 사랑하는 나의 아이야, 잘 지내고 있니? 그곳의 날씨는 어떠니? 이 곳은 영하의 기온을 넘나드는 겨울에서 꽃이 피어나는 따뜻한 봄으로 날씨가 바뀌어가고 있단다! 해마다 계절이 바뀔 때마다 정말 신기하게도 하나님의 섭리에 대해 생각하게 되는 것 같아. 특히 영원할 거 같았던 추운 겨울에서 봄으로 갈 때는 어두운 시간이 지나면 나타나는 은혜의 계절을 마음으로 묵상하게 되더라구. 비록 그 은혜의 날들이 당장 나의 삶에 나타나 보이지 않아도 혹은 내가 원하는 형태가 아니라 지금은 볼 수 없다 해도 계절의 변화를 묵상하며 믿음으로 보게 되곤 한단다. 성경 말씀에 하나님을 알지 못해도 사람들이 그분을 알 수 있도록 자연에 하나님의 것들을 심어 놓았다구 쓰여있는데 자연을 보고 하나님을 생각할 때마다 나는 그 말씀을 생각하게 되어. 너와 가까운 곳에 살고 있지는 못해도 너와 함께 하나님이 지으신 자연을 보면서 그 안의 하나님을 만나는 경험들을 함께 나누고 싶구나. 사랑하는 아이야, 하나님이 너의 삶의 모든 곳에서, 네가 사는 곳의 아름다운 자연에서도 너와 만나주시길 기도한다! 사랑해! 로마서 1:20 창세로부터 그의 보이지 아니하는 것들 곧 그의 영원하신 능력과 신성이 그가 만드신 만물에 분명히 보여 알려졌나니 그러므로 그들이 핑계하지 못할지니라. My beloved child, How are you doing? How is the weather over there? The weather here is now turning from the freezing, cold winter to the flower blooming spring. Every year when the season changes, I think about how amazingly God created this world. Especially when the cold winter, which once made me feel like it would be freezing forever, slowly fades into the spring, it reminds me of the old dark days of mine that have passed away and the new season of grace that have come into my life. Even though grace in our lives for now is invisible at the moment, it’s not because grace doesn’t exist, but because grace is shown and formed according to God’s will, not our hope. We just don’t recognize it. So, in those times, we may have to just sit back and watch how the season of our lives slowly turn out to be great in the way that we’ve never expected before. We do this by faith, right? In the bible, it says that God has placed signs in the nature that tell us who He is. Every time I look at the nature, I think about that scripture. My beloved child! Even though you and I are not physically together, we are living in the same nature as God’s creations. We can share each other’s life experiences of meeting God while looking into the same nature. My beloved child, I pray that God will always be with you in the village where you live, in the beautiful nature, and everywhere you will be, throughout your whole life. I love you so much!

[일반-선하신 하나님] Regular-God is good!] 사랑하는 나의 아이야, 잘 지내고 있니? 그동안 보내준 너의 편지를 잘 받아서 보았단다. 편지를 받을 때마다 편지와 함께 전해지는 네 마음과 정성으로 내 마음도 따뜻해지곤 한단다. 우리가 떨어져 있지만 편지로 연결될 수 있다는 게 정말 감사하지? 나는 요즘 좋은 일이 있을 때마다 ‘하나님이 정말 좋은 분이구나’를 생각하게 된단다. 힘든 일이 있을 때에도 ‘그런데 하나님이 어떤 분이지?’ 라고 그분의 좋은 성품을 생각하다 보면 좋은 것들을 소망하게 되더라구. 물론 선하신 하나님이 와닿지 않는 날들도 있지. 그럴 때는 그런 하나님의 좋으심을 더욱 깊게 경험하고 잊지 않게 해달라고 기도하곤 해. 그분의 성품을 알고 누리기 원하는 내 마음을 받아주실 하나님을 신뢰하면서 말이야. 사랑하는 아이야, 우리 함께 하나님의 좋으심을 누리는 삶을 살자. 나도 너의 삶 속에 선하신 하나님을 경험하고 인정하는 역사가 늘어나도록 기도하고 또 기도할게! 사랑해! 다음 만날 때까지 건강하렴 너와 함께 하나님의 성품을 알아가길 소망하는 후원자로부터 시편 34:8 너희는 여호와의 선하심을 맛보아 알찌어다 그에게 피하는 자는 복이 있도다 Dear my beloved child, How is it going? I’ve been reading all the letters you’ve sent me with great joy. Every time I read your letters, I feel so warmhearted because I can feel how sincerely you wrote each letter. Isn’t it so amazing that we can be connected despite of the distance between us? Every time good things happen in my life, I realize how good our God is. And even when I am going through difficult times, I also try to think, ‘What kind of God is our God?’ and meditate on His goodness. Then I get to hope for good things that He will do for me. Of course there are some days when you just cannot feel the goodness of God. In those times, I pray that God will give me chances to experience the goodness of God and that I will never forget it again, in the belief that God always wants me to have good things in life. My beloved child, I want to encourage you to know how great our God is every day. I will continue to pray for you that you will always experience and recognize God, the good Lord of your life. [일반-몸이 아플 때] [Regular-Praying for your health…] 안녕, 그 동안 잘 지냈니? 언제나 네 얼굴에 환한 웃음이 가득하길 기도해 나는 네가 늘 건강하기를 기도하지만, 열이 나거나 몸이 아플 때는 성경말씀을 기억했으면 좋겠어. 사복음서를 보면 예수님께서 얼마나 많은 사람들의 몸과 마음을 치료해주셨는지 알 수 있단다. 그래서 나도 몸이 아플 땐 병을 치유하시는 예수님을 생각하며 기도를 하게 돼. 하나님께서는 우리 몸을 직접 만드신 분이시기에 나의 아픔을 가장 잘 아시는 분 이시란다. 그러니 앞으로 몸이 아플 때는 무서워하지 말고 전능하신 하나님께 믿음으로 기도해보렴. 놀라우신 하나님께서 너의 건강을 회복시켜 주실 거야. 그리고 가족이나 친구가 아플 때도 함께 기도해주는 네가 되기를 바래. 너를 사랑하는 후원자가. 이러므로 너희 죄를 서로 고하며 병 낫기를 위하여 서로 기도하라 의인의 간구는 역사하는 힘이 많으니라. (야고보서 5: 16) Dear my child, Hi! How have you been? I pray that you may have a bright smile on your face all the time. I always pray for your health, but if you have fever or get sick someday, I hope you remember the bible verses. In the four gospels of the bible, you can see that how many people were healed by Jesus physically and mentally. So when I get sick, I think of Jesus who heals our sickness and pray to him. God knows my pain the best because he is the one who created my body. Therefore, when you are sick, don’t be afraid and pray to almighty God with faith. Then our wonderful God will restore your health. I hope you also pray for your family and friends when they are sick. [일반-너의 하루] [Regular- How do you spend your day?] 사랑하는 아이에게, 잘 지내고 있니? 오늘 밥은 맛있게 먹었는지, 밥 먹고 양치질은 거르지 않았는지 궁금하구나. 나는 네가 하루를 어떻게 보내는지 참 궁금하단다. 아침에 일어나면 제일 먼저 무얼 하는지, 점심이 되기까지 보통 무얼 하며 시간을 보내는지, 하루 중 누구와 가장 많은 시간을 보내는지… 네 하루 일과를 가능한 한 자세히 알고 싶을 만큼, 난 너에게 관심이 참 많단다. 멀리 떨어져 있어서 더 궁금하고 보고 싶은가 봐. 너와 내가 똑같은 하루를 보낼 수는 없지만, 함께 할 수 있는 걸 제안할 수 있는 게 하나 있는데 그게 뭔 줄 아니? 아침에 일어나자마자 하나님께 하루를 맡기는 기도, 그리고 밤에 잠들기 전 하루를 돌아보는 기도를 드리는 거야. 그럼 우리의 하루 일과 중 두 개나 같아지는 거란다. 어때? 재미있겠지? 너의 하루하루가 주님의 아름다운 사람으로 자라는 데 밑거름이 되는 날들이 되기를 기도하며, 이만 편지를 마칠게. 사랑해. Dear my lovely child, How are you doing? I wonder if you had your meal well and didn’t miss brushing teeth afterwards. I wonder how you would spend your day. I’d like to know what would be the first thing you do when you wake up, how you would spend time before lunch, and whom you are spending your time with the most… I am so interested in you that I’d love to know your daily routine as much as I can. Maybe it’s because I am far away from you now. I know I cannot spend my time here like the way you there, but I could suggest one thing that we can do together. You know what that would be? It is to give prayer to God right after you wake up, and right before you go to bed, looking back your day. That would mean that you and I share one daily routine together. How does that sound? Sounds like fun?

I am praying for you to have every single day meaningful enough to be a foundation to make you a beautiful person for the Lord. This is for now. I love you.

[일반-너의 중심을 보시는 하나님] [Regular- God looks at your heart.] 사랑하는 나의 아이에게, 너의 몸과 지식이 자라나면서, 사람들의 시선을 의식하게 될 때가 있지? 그래서 항상 바른 말과 바른 행동을 해야 한다는 부담감으로 지치고 힘들 수 있을 거야. 그런데 그런 부담감은 벗어버렸으면 좋겠어. 왜냐면 그것은 하나님께서 주신 마음이 아니기 때문이야. 사람들은 너의 행동과 겉모습을 보고 너를 판단하지만 하나님께서는 너의 중심을 보시는 분 이시란다. 너는 사람들에게 잘 보이고 싶기도 하고 하나님을 기쁘게 해드리고 싶기도 할 거야. 하지만 인생에서 진정한 승리를 하려면 다른 사람의 인정을 얻기 위한 노력은 내려놓고 하나님의 뜻과 그분의 선하심을 구해야 해. 그럴 때 하나님께서 은혜로 너의 갈 길을 보여주시고 또 인생의 동역자들을 너에게로 인도해주실 거야. 그러니 마음의 중심을 하나님께 두고 그분만 의지하며 하루하루 함께 달려가보자! 너희의 구속자시요 이스라엘의 거룩하신 이이신 여호와께서 이르시되 나는 네게 유익하도록 가르치고 너를 마땅히 행할 길로 인도하는 네 하나님 여호와라. 이사야 48:17 Dear my child, While you grow up physically and mentally, there are times when you become conscious of the eyes of others. It may lay a burden on you because it makes you think that you always have to speak properly and behave. But don’t let it weigh on you for God did not give us such spirit. People judge you by your appearance and behavior, but God looks at your heart. You may want to win the favor of others and please God at the same time. But if you want to have a true victory in your life, you have to seek the favor of God rather than trying to gain recognition from others. Then God will show you the way with his grace and send you lifelong friends to you. So, let’s live our daily lives focusing our hearts on God and holding onto him every day. This is what the LORD says your Redeemer, the Holy One of Israel: “I am the LORD your God, who teaches you what is best for you, who directs you in the way you should go. (Isaiah 48:17)

[일반-칭찬의 말] [Regular- Giving compliments makes a whale dance!] 사랑하는 아이에게, 너는 어떤 말을 들을 때 기분이 제일 좋니? 모든 사람은 장점, 단점을 함께 지니고 있는데, 단점보다는 그 사람이 지닌 장점을 찾아내려고 노력하는 게 중요할 것 같아. 그리고 그 장점에 해 그 사람에게 이야기해주는 걸 ‘칭찬’이라고 하는데, 예를 들어, 웃는 표정이 예쁜 친구가 있다면 그 웃는 얼굴을 칭찬해주고, 학교에 언제나 일찍 오는 친구가 있다면 그 친구의 성실한 점을 칭찬해주는 것, 이게 바로 칭찬이란다. 어렵지 않지? ‘칭찬은 고래도 춤추게 한다’는 말이 있단다. 고래를 책이나 사진을 통해 본 적이 있는지 모르겠지만, 고래는 바다에 사는 동물 중 몸집이 가장 큰 동물이야. 그렇게 큰 고래도 ‘칭찬’을 들으면 신이 나서 춤을 추게 된다니, 칭찬이 얼마나 사람을 기분 좋게 해주는지 잘 알 수 있겠지? 오늘 네가 칭찬으로 기분 좋게 해줄 사람이 누가 있을까 한번 생각해보렴. 나도 한번 생각해볼게. 그리고 다음 편지에 나눠보자꾸나. 사랑해. Dear my lovely child, What kinds of words make you feel the best? Every person has his own strong and weak points. So I think it is more important to find that person’s strong points than weak points. Telling a person about good things he has is called a ‘compliment’. For instance, to a friend who smiles beautifully, you give a compliment about it and to a friend who comes to school very early every day, you give a compliment about being diligent. This is what we called a ‘compliment’. Not difficult at all, right? There’s a saying: ‘Giving compliments makes a whale dance’. I wonder if you have seen a whale through photos or books. It is the biggest animal in the ocean. Such a big animal like a whale can dance when he gets ‘compliments’, so you’d realize how happy people would get, when they get compliments, right? I suggest you to think of people whom you might make happy by giving him compliments. I will think of that as well. And let us talk about it in our next letter. I love you. [일반-하나님의 기쁨이 되는 너]

[Regular- You are His great joy!] 사랑하는 아이에게, 하나님이 너를 얼마나 사랑하실까 생각해본 적이 있니? 오늘 성경을 읽다가 네가 생각난 구절이 하나 있었는데, 너도 같이 읽어볼래? “너의 하나님 여호와가 너의 가운데에 계시니 그는 구원을 베푸실 전능자이시라 그가 너로 말미암아 기쁨을 이기지 못하시며 너를 잠잠히 사랑하시며 너로 말미암아 즐거이 부르며 기뻐하시리라 하리라” (스바냐 3장 17절) 이 구절을 읽으며 나는 가슴이 막 뛰었단다. 네 이름을 부를 때면 나도 모르게 얼굴에 미소가 지어지는데, 너로 인하여 즐거이 부르며 기쁨을 감추지 못하시는 하나님을 상상하니얼마나 기쁘고 감사하던지! 나에게, 그리고 무엇보다 하나님에게 기쁨이 되는 너를 만난 나는 참 행운인 것 같아. 앞으로 두고두고 저 구절을 읽을 때면 네가 떠오를 것 같구나. 네가 하나님의 기쁨인 것을 언제나 마음속에 기억하렴. 사랑해. Dear my lovely child, Have you ever thought of how much God loves you? While I was reading the Bible today, this verse reminded me of you a lot. Do you want to read it too? “The LORD your God is with you, he is mighty to save. He will take great delight in you, he will quiet you with his love, he will rejoice over you with singing.“ (Zephaniah 3:17) Reading this verse, my heart kept beating fast. When I call your name myself, even I cannot help but smile. Then thinking how much delight God would take in you and rejoice over you with singing, I was so happy and grateful! I felt very lucky to have met you, for you are such a delight to me and most of all, to God. It seems that whenever I read this verse from now on, I will think of you. I hope you’ll never forget in your heart that you are His great joy. I love you.

[일반-어린이센터 이야기] [Regular- Tell me about your children center!] 사랑하는 아이야, 오늘은 네가 공부하는 어린이센터에 해 이것저것 궁금했던 것들을 물어볼까 해. 난 자주 상상해보곤 하거든. 네가 수업을 듣는 모습, 손을 들고 질문하는 모습, 그리고 간식을 먹는 모습 등등 말이야. 어린이센터에서 배우는 것들 중 무얼 배울 때 가장 신이 나니? 그리고 네가 가장 어렵게 느끼는 과목이 있을까? 그럴 때 선생님이나 친구에게 도움을 청해본 적이 있니? 또 어린이센터에서는 누구와 가장 친하니? 친한 친구 이름을 알려줘도 좋고, 그림으로 친구 얼굴을 그려줘도 흥미로울 것 같구나. 너에 관한 거라면 뭐든지 환영이란다.

‘사랑은 관심’이라는 말이 있는데, 어느 정도 내게 맞는 말인 것 같아. 네 일상에 해 자꾸 궁금해하고, 그려보게 되니 말이야. 너도 내게 궁금한 게 있다면 뭐든지 물어봐 주렴. 우리 둘은 그래도 되는 사이란다. 너랑 나는 특별한 사이니까! Dear my lovely child, I would like to ask you what I wanted to know about the Project, where you study. I often picture you taking classes, raising hand and answering questions and also eating snacks. What kind of subject makes you excited the most at the Project? What is the most difficult subject for you to study? Have you ever asked for a hand to your friends or teachers about it? Who is your best friend there? Let me know his or her name, or you can even draw your friend’s face and send it to me. Anything about you is always welcome. There is this saying, “To love is to have interest”. I think it’s so right, because I become curious and to picture your daily life. If you want to know anything about me at all, feel free to ask. There’s nothing we can’t talk about. [일반-네 꿈은 무엇이니?] [Regular- What is your dream?] 사랑하는 나의 자녀야, 잘 지내고 있니? 언제나처럼 시간이 참 빠르게 가는구나. 요즘은 프로젝트에서 무엇을 배우니? 어떤 것을 배울 때 가장 신이 나고 즐겁니? 공부하며 항상 최고가 되고 일등이 될 필요는 없단다. 그렇지만, 네가 가장 좋아하는 것, 잘하는 것이 무엇인지 어려서부터 알고 찾아가는 일은 매우 중요하단다. 그것이 바로 `꿈`이라는 것이거든. 자꾸 물어보고 생각해보렴. `내가 가장 좋아하는 게 뭘까? 내가 가장 잘할 수 있는 게 뭘까?` 하고 말이야. ^^ 아참, 어린 시절, 공부가 어렵고 힘들게 느껴졌을 때 나는 이 성경구절을 가지고 하나님께 도움을 요청했단다: “너희 중에 누구든지 지혜가 부족하거든 모든 사람에게 후히 주시고 꾸짖지 아니하시는 하나님께 구하라 그리하면 주시리라.”(야고보서 1:5) 그럼 다음 편지엔 네 꿈 이야기를 기 해 볼게. 사랑한다. My beloved child, How are you? Time goes very fast as always. What are you learning at the Project these days? What are the most exciting and enjoyable thing to learn? You don`t have to be the best student who wins first place all the time. But it is very important that you find and realize what you`re good at and what interests you the most. We call these “dreams.” Think about it and ask yourself often, `what do I like the most? What am I best at?` When I was a student, studying was difficult and frustrating sometimes. Whenever I felt that way, I held on to this verse and asked for God`s help: “If any of you lacks wisdom, he should ask God, who gives generously to all without finding fault, and it will be given to him.”(James 1:5) I look forward to hearing about your dream. [일반-너에게 편지 쓸 때 나는] [Regular- when I write a letter to you…] 사랑하는 나의 자녀야, 잘 지내고 있니? 너에게 편지 쓸 때 나는 이런 저런 생각에 빠지곤 한단다. 내 편지를 읽고 있는 너는 어떤 표정일까? 내 편지로 인해 기분이 좋아졌을까? 내가 어떤 사람일지 궁금해할까? 그리고 내가 보고 싶을까? 등등 말이야. 그리고 내 편지는 어디에 보관될까? 너는 내 편지를 가족 또는 친구들과 함께 나눌까? 내 편지의 질문들에 해 생각해볼까? 내 글씨체가 이상하게 느껴지진 않을까? 이런 즐거운 질문과 상상들이 머리 속을 채운단다. 그렇지만 가장 많이 하는 생각은 사랑스러운 네가 너무 보고 싶다는 거야. 편지로 나의 마음을 다 표현할 수 없지만, 나는 당장이라도 달려가서 너를 보고 싶어. 그래도 편지를 통해 네가 가까이 있는 것처럼 느껴져서 편지 받는 것이 정말 행복하단다. 너와 더욱 아름답고 풍성한 관계를 만들어가길 바란단다. 왜냐하면 너를 사랑하니까! How are you, my child? I think of many things when I write a letter to you. What would your facial expression be like when you read my letter? Would this letter make you happy? Would you wonder what kind of person I am? Would you miss me? I ask these questions to myself. I also wonder where you keep my letters, and if you share the letters with your family or friends. Do you take time to think of my questions before you answer? Is my handwriting okay? All these interesting questions fill my mind when I write a letter to you. However, what I think about the most is how much I miss you. I cannot express how I feel about you in this one letter, but I always want to run to you and meet you in person. But I am content because I feel as if you are near when I write a letter to you, and it makes me happy. I wish we could develop more beautiful and fruitful relationship because I love you!

[일반-우리를 웃게 만드는 일들] [Regular- what makes you smile?] 사랑하는 나의 자녀야, 즐거운 하루를 보내고 있니? 나는 어제 재미있는 TV 프로그램을 보면서 한바탕 웃었단다. 그러면서 문득 궁금해졌단다. 너는 어떨 때 크게 소리 내어 웃는 지 말이야. 친구와 재미있는 놀이를 할 때? 맛있는 것을 먹을 때? 아니면 집에서 키우는 동물과 장난칠 때? 이런 저런 상상을 해 보았는데, 네 아름다운 얼굴에 웃음이 피어나는 모습을 상상해보니 상상만으로도 너무 사랑스럽더구나! 다음 편지에 너를 웃게 하는 일들에 관한 이야기를 듣고 싶구나. 언제 크게 웃었는지, 누구와 함께, 무엇을 할 때 웃었는지 말이야. 너의 매일매일이 웃음으로 가득한 하루가 되었으면 좋겠구나. 사랑한다. Dear my child, From time to time, I used to think: what would be the first word from my mouth, if I meet God? So many words come to my mind but the very first thing would be “Thank you”. I just cannot express how thankful I am to have His love, which sent His one and only son for us, not expecting anything back from us. After I tell Him that, I want to hug Him tight. If I meet you, what would I say to you the very first? I used to think of this as well, and I think it would just be the same: “Thank you”. Thank you for growing up so well, for being my sponsored child… You are my precious family whom the Lord himself connected with the string of love.
