VERSES OF
THE WAY TO BUDDHAHOOD
The Existence Of Ordinary People And Sages
The difference between ignorance and wisdom,
One leading to bondage, the other to emancipation,
Should be believed deeply and without doubt.
The Existence Of The Five Destinies
Circulation within the five destinies,
The body and mind sustain much suffering.
The Three Evil Destinies
The great extremely hot hells,
The peripheral hells all of which one must pass
through,
The eight frigid hells and the solitary hells:
These are the worst places for suffering beings.

By The Venerable Yin ShunThe Basic Purpose of Following The Buddha
In order to understand the basic purpose of following the teachings of the Buddha, we must recognize the value of human existence and that human beings are playing a leading role in the universe. Having recognized this value, we can determine the correct direction to head towards. We ourselves cause suffer-ing and happiness for ourselves, and commotion and tranquillity in the world. There is no external authority that governs our lives. Since we possess such an initiative power, therefore there is pos-sibility for us to perform wholesome acts and improve ourselves. To improve is to work towards good and progress step by step un-til we reach the summit of ultimate wholesomeness. This is the purpose of following the teachings of the Buddha. It is human na-ture to look up to the good. Unless we are confronted with failures in our lives and are losers, then we may be low in our spirits. We may give up on ourselves and let ourselves become the scum of the community. However, there are not many people acting this way, and there are always many opportunities lying ahead, waiting for us to discover them and improve ourselves. People in general consider that the good things in life consist of a happy family with many children, good health, wealth and holding high social status. This is certainly true to some extent. But ac-cording to Buddhism, these are good fruits, not the good seeds. If we want to continue to enjoy the good fruits we must not be con-tent with what we have at the time. This is because good times will eventually come to an end. Only by accumulating good seeds (performing wholesome acts) can we maintain and progress to-wards a better life. This may be compared to our actions when we see a beautiful flower. Our greed urges us to pluck it so that it becomes ours in-stead of taking care and cultivating the plant. In this way, we do have possession of the flower but we will soon lose it. In addition, this is also an unwholesome deed. Although some people acquire wealth and social status by reason-able means, they use their social status and wealth to exploit oth-ers for their own advantages. This is the result of not establishing the correct goal in uplifting themselves, and hence, they lack the aspiration of improving themselves in life. Some people say, “I do not want to follow the teachings of the Buddha nor attain Buddhahood. All I want to do is to be a good person.” This is not a right attitude. As the ancient saying goes: “If
we follow the best example, we may end up as moderately good examples. If we follow the moderately good examples, then we may end up even below these.” It is right to start following the teachings of the Buddha by becoming a good person, but if we are content in trying to be a good person only, we may end up as not being such a good person after all. Therefore, to follow the teach-ings of the Buddha is not just to be a good person. We must set up a noble objective and strive to accomplish it. Even if we cannot accomplish it in this lifetime, we should be determined to realize this objective in the future. All high cultures and religious in the world have noble ideals the teach people to strive and attain them. Christianity teaches people to obey the will of, and learn from, God. Although Christians be-lieve that they can never attain the status of God and Jesus Christ, they must learn the teachings of universal love and self-sacrifice as Jesus of Nazareth exemplifies. They say the dust makes the human body, whereas God endows the soul to the human. Be-cause humans commit sins, they degenerate. This has made the originally pure and clean soul sullen. Therefore, they teach people to firstly purify their unclean souls, before admitting them into their ideal objective – Heaven. The Chinese Confucians also say: “The scholars should strive to be virtuous; the virtuous aim for the sagely; the sagely aim for the celestial.” The scholarly people are the class of intellectuals well versed in various branches of higher knowledge. Their ideal is to attempt to rank themselves among the virtuous ones they see. Furthermore, the virtuous ones should attempt to rank themselves with the saintly one. But even the sages are not all-knowing, so they too should attempt to be ‘heavenly’. Thus, the orthodox Con-fucian spirit is to constantly strive towards virtue and the sagely. The Taoists, too, have a set of ideals for themselves. That is: “Heaven models itself on Tao (the Way of Nature); Tao models itself on nature.” The phrase ‘Tao models itself on nature’ means that we should follow the natural law of the universe without artifici-ality, that is, to act in accordance with the purest nature and the flow of non-intervention. This is their progressive outlook on life. The world will be in a chaotic state if the activities of the world, in-dividual activities and inter-personal relationships, do not act with the flow of the natural law. The situation will worsen if we try to solve it using ways that contradict the natural law. Then suffering
will set in. From the above observations, we find that the Confucians follow the virtuous acts of the sage and the saint. From there they uplift themselves to the heavenly state. Taoists, on the other hand, ad-vocate acting with the flow of the natural laws of the universe. In short, both of them have some means of guiding us to the ideal
progressive path of life.

5 BGVI News Volume 24
By Upasaka Chuang Chun ChiangExtract from Stories of Agama Sutra’s Selection
Once upon a time, the Buddha, his senior disci-ples and a group of monks (the Sangha)
were traveling through Magadha, one of the countries in
ancient India. They planned to transit through the capi-
tal Rajagaha and visit Nalanda Village. Traveling be-
hind the Buddha and his disciples were wanderer Sup-
piya and his pupil Brahmadatta. They were heading for
the same village and followed closely with the Buddha
and his group. On their way to the village, Suppiya was
finding fault in all sorts of ways with the Buddha, the
Dharma and the Sangha, whereas his pupil Brahmadatta
was speaking in various ways in their praise. And so
these two, teacher and pupil, directly opposing each
other’s arguments, followed closely behind the Buddha
and his order of monks.
Then the Buddha stopped for one night with his monks
at the royal park of Ambalatthika. And Suppiya too
stopped there for the night with his pupil brahmadatta.
And Suppiya went on abusing the Buddha, the Dharma
and the Sangha, while his pupil Brahmadatta defended
them. The Buddha’s disciples could not help but talking
about the strange teacher and pupil. Everybody thought
that in contrast to the wanderer who had no under-
standing of his pupil, the Buddha’s insight into people’s
aspiration and interest was indeed rare and hard to come
by.
Then the Buddha, being aware of what those monks
were saying, came to the lecture hall and asked his dis-
ciples what they were discussing about. The disciples
therefore reported to the Buddha the reasons behind
their discussions.
The Buddha told the disciples that if anyone should
speak in disparagement of the Buddha, of the Dharma or
the Sangha, they should not be angry, resentful or upset
on that account. For if others disparage the Buddha, the
Dharma or the Sangha, and you are angry or displeased,
can you recognize whether what they say is reasonable
or incorrect? On the other hand, everyone should not be
pleased and happy upon hearing others praising the
Buddha, the Dharma and the Sangha because it could
only generate obstacle, hence unable to judge truly what
others saying is reasonable or incorrect.
Continuing, The Buddha said that the ordinary people
could only praise him from the standpoints of his ob-
serving the travail, insignificant and worldly precepts
such as the five precepts, the ten virtuous deeds, living in
a frugal and strict way, begging for foods and collecting
no personal wealth; but failed to praise the Buddha from
the standpoints of his verifying the brilliant, profound and
subtle Dharma. The Buddha said that only from the
standpoints of his verified the brilliant, profound and
subtle Dharma is the true way to praise the Buddha.
Notes:
1. This story was derived from the Chinese translation of
Brahmajala Sutra (Yuen Heng Temple Edition); Buddha
Light Brahmajala Sutra (Buddha Light Publication) and
Dirghagama 21th Brahmajala Sutra)
2. According to the Buddha’s teaching described in this
story, we understand that Dharma cannot be dwelled
upon strict precepts. The advantage of true Dharma is
the right view, and the right behavior-- departing from
vexation, attachment to self and breaking the cycle of
birth and death--developed from the right view. Exam-
ples listed in the sutra are the processes of The Origin,
the Passing Away, The Gratification, The Danger and
The Escape between the Six Touch and Sensation. This
is beginning of the Four Noble True; and also the Right
Behaviors developed from the Right View of Cause and
Conditions.
3. It is noteworthy that the pure precepts practiced by the
Buddha included not engage in any forms of divination,
ritual of burning, fortune telling, magical incantation,
and medication.
