El nuevo traje del emperador The emperor's new clothes

Érase una vez un emperador muy vanidoso a quien le encantaban los finos ropajes. Gastaba la mayor parte de su tiempo y mucho dinero en espléndidos trajes nuevos. El emperador descuidaba por completo los asuntos de su gobierno y sólo le interesaba aparecer en público para lucir sus nuevos trajes y sombreros.

Once upon a time, there was a very vain emperor to who loved his fine clothes. He spent the greater part of his time and a lot of money in splendid new attire. The emperor neglected the affairs of his government completely and was only interested in appearing in public to show off his new suits and hats.

Un día llegaron a la ciudad dos estafadores y decidieron sacar partido de la afición exagerada del emperador.

One day two swindlers came to the city and decided to take advantage of the exaggerated fondness of the emperor.

-Tengo un plan con el que nos volveremos ricos en poco tiempo -dijo uno de ellos.

One of them said - I have a plan that will make us a fortune in a little time -.

Las puertas del palacio estaban abiertas para los tejedores y The palace's

sastres de todos los rincones de la tierra. En poco tiempo, los dos estafadores tuvieron audiencia con el emperador.

doors were open for the weavers and tailors of all of the corners of the land. Shortly, the two swindlers had audience with the emperor.

-Somos tejedores de un país muy lejano y fabricamos la tela más hermosa que se pueda imaginar su Excelencia -dijeron los falsos tejedores, mientras el emperador escuchaba con sumo interés-. Los colores son majestuosos y el diseño es inigualable.

- We weavers come from a very distant country and we make the most beautiful cloth that you can imagine your Excellency - The false weavers said, while the emperor listened with utmost interest. - The colors are majestic and the design is unequalled.

-Esta tela -continuaron diciendo-, tiene la propiedad de ser invisible para todo aquel que sea tonto y no esté a la altura de su puesto.

They continued saying - This cloth has the property of being invisible for whoever is slow-witted or incompetent[?].

"Una tela así me sería muy útil", pensó el emperador. "Así podré saber cuáles de mis ministros no están a la altura de

Sin pensar más, el emperador le ordenó a su primer ministro entregarles a los tejedores el dinero necesario, así como la seda y los hilos de oro, para que empezaran el trabajo de inmediato.

Without stopping to think more, the emperor ordered his prime minister to deliver to the weavers the necessary money, as well as silk and gold thread, in order that they begin the work immediately.

Los dos estafadores se pusieron manos a la obra. Alquilaron un telar y un gran taller, y se instalaron con toda comodidad. Cada vez que alguien iba a verlos, fingían trabajar arduamente.

The two swindlers put their hands to the work. They rented a loom and a great workshop, and they moved in with all comfort. Every time that somebody came to see them, they pretended to work

arduously.Por supuesto, no estaban tejiendo nada. Todos los días escondían un poco de seda y de hilos de oro, y se pasaban el tiempo comiendo y bebiendo.

Of course, they were not weaving anything. Every day they hid some silk and some gold threads, and they spent their time eating and drinking.

Meanwhile, the emperor enjoyed himself thinking about his wonderful new clothing.

"Me pregunto cómo irá el trabajo de esos tejedores", pensaba. No estaba muy seguro de ir a ver la tela por sí mismo, pues lo inquietaban sus poderes mágicos… ¡Claro que eso no debía preocuparle en lo más mínimo!

I wonder how the work will go from those weavers, - He thought . - It was not very safe to go to see the cloth by itself, because it would disturb it's magic powers. Of course that should not have worried him in the least!

-¡Ya sé! -exclamó el emperador-. Enviaré a mi primer ministro. Él no es ningún tonto y está a la altura de su cargo. La tela no será invisible para él. El emperador mandó llamar a su primer ministro y le pidió un reporte detallado sobre la elaboración de la tela. Ya toda la ciudad se había enterado de

He is not a fool and he measures up to his position. The cloth will not be invisible for him. The emperor sent for his first minister and asked him for a detailed report on the elaboration of the cloth. Already all city had found out about the manufacture of the wonderful cloth. The first minister, that had his heart in the right place, decided to go only to supervise the weaver's work.

"No soy estúpido y sé muy bien que soy apto para mi cargo, pero es mejor tomar precauciones".

I am not stupid and I know very well that I am apt for my position, but it is better to take precautions.

Los falsos tejedores recibieron muy amablemente al primer ministro. Uno de ellos levantaba los brazos en el aire, como si estuviera sosteniendo la tela, y hablaba de sus magníficos colores. El otro movía las manos sobre el telar, fingiendo entrelazar los hilos. Sin embargo, el pobre primer ministro ¡no veía absolutamente nada!

The false weavers received the first minister very affably. One of them

raised his arms in the air, as if he were supporting the cloth, and talked about its magnificent colors. The other moved his hands on the loom, pretending to braid threads. However, the poor first minister failed to see anything!

"¿Me habré vuelto estúpido?" se preguntó preocupado. Have I become stupid? He asked himself worried.

El primer ministro regresó al palacio. The first minister returned to the palace.

Al cabo de unos días, los embaucadores le pidieron más dinero al primer ministro. En el fondo de su corazón, él sabía que algo no andaba bien, pero le daba temor confesar que no veía la tela. Así pues, accedió a enviarles más dinero.

After some days, the tricksters asked for more money from the first minister. In the bottom of his heart, he knew that something was not right, but he feared to confess that he failed to see the cloth. So then, he agreed to send them more money.

Al día siguiente, los sirvientes del emperador fueron al taller de los falsos tejedores a dejarles tanto el dinero que pedían como más hilos de oro. Los estafadores estaban encantados.

On the following day, the emperor's servants went to the false

weavers' workshop to leave them so much money that they asked for more gold thread. The swindlers were delighted.

La impaciencia del emperador aumentaba cada día más. Esta vez decidió enviar a uno de sus cortesanos de confianza a supervisar el trabajo de los tejedores. La sorpresa del cortesano al ver el telar vacío fue total. Sin embargo, para que los tejedores no pensaran que era un tonto, se acercó al telar e hizo como si examinara cuidadosamente la tela.

The emperor's impatience grew more every day. This time he decided to send one of his trusty courtiers to supervise the weavers' work. The surprise of the courtier to see the empty loom was total. However, in order that weavers not think that he was a fool, he got close to the loom and he made as if he examined the cloth with care.

Cuando regresó al palacio del emperador, no quiso revelar su incapacidad para ver la tela. No quería exponerse a que lo considerasen estúpido. Entonces, alabó la tela e hizo una magnífica descripción que complació al emperador. Por fin, el emperador decidió ir a ver la tela con sus propios ojos. Los estafadores lo recibieron con grandes venias.

When he returned to the emperor's palace, he did not want to reveal his incapacity to

see the cloth. He did not want to risk that they consider him stupid. Then, he praised the cloth and he make a magnificent description that pleased the emperor. Finally, the emperor decided to go to see the cloth with his own eyes. The swindlers received him with majestic consent.

El emperador no salía de su asombro: ¡No podía ver la tela! The emperor did not get out of his amazement: He failed to see the cloth!

-Toque esta tela, su Excelencia -decían los falsos tejedores-. Es de una suavidad y una delicadeza indescriptibles.

The false weavers said - touch this cloth your Excellence -. It is of a softness and an indescribable fineness.

-Hemm... sí, claro, claro, muy suave -dijo el emperador-. Es un trabajo absolutamente maravilloso.

El día de la prueba del traje llegó por fin. El emperador esperaba pacientemente en ropa interior mientras los estafadores hacían como si estuvieran probándole al emperador el famoso traje. Los cortesanos, reunidos en torno a él, alababan la calidad del diseño y la hermosura de los colores.

The day of the proof of the suit came at last. The emperor waited for swindlers patiently in underwear in the meantime they did as if they were trying the emperor's famous suit. Courtiers, joined together about him, they praised the quality of the design and the beauty of the colors.

-¡Su Excelencia debería lucir este traje en la procesión de mañana! -dijo alguien.

- Your Excellency this suit should shine in the procession tomorrow! - somebody said.

Al día siguiente, los estafadores le ayudaron al emperador a ponerse el traje. Con todo cuidado, le alcanzaban cada prenda y él, con el mismo cuidado, hacía lo mejor para ponérsela.

On the following day, the swindlers helped the emperor to put on his suit. With all care,

they passed each garment to him and he, with the same care, did his best to put it on .

-¿Me veo bien? -preguntaba con nerviosismo el emperador, al tiempo que se miraba en el espejo.

- Do I look good? - the emperor asked nervously while was looking at himself in the mirror.

-¡Oh, sí, su Excelencia! -todos exclamaban, con una sonrisa de oreja a oreja.

- Oh, yes, your Excellence! - they all exclaimed, with a smile from ear to ear.

El emperador desfiló por toda la ciudad. La gente comentaba con admiración la delicadeza y vistosidad de las prendas. Nadie quería pasar por tonto. De repente, un niño gritó:

The emperor paraded for all the city. The people commented with admiration the delicacy and colorfulness of the garments. Nobody wanted to be taken for a fool. All of a sudden, a little boy shouted :

-¡Pero si el emperador está desnudo! - But the emperor is naked !

Todo el mundo empezó a reírse a carcajadas. Everybody

began to roar with laughter.

El emperador se sentía muy avergonzado, pues sabía que la gente tenía razón. A pesar de todo, siguió caminando con la cabeza muy erguida, resuelto a no admitir en público su estupidez. Por su parte, los astutos estafadores en otro lugar, disfrutaban de la inmensa fortuna.

The emperor felt very ashamed, because he knew that the people were right . Nevertheless, he kept on walking with his head very erect, resolved not to admit his stupidity in public . For their part, the astute swindlers were someplace else, enjoying their immense fortune.
