The Adopt-a-Shelter Program allows any non-profit, faith-based, or private organization to support Brevard County’s emergency shelters in a disaster. Your volunteers can give back to the community by helping to staff the shelters and bring comfort to those taking refuge there. The American Red Cross, Brevard VOAD (Voluntary Organizations Active in Disaster), and Brevard County Emergency Management will provide free annual training. Prepare now to help your neighbors when they will need you the most!

why do we need your help?Brevard County has 13 primary evacuation shelters and 4 pet friendly shelters, with additional shelters available if needed, which covers our 72-mile length and population of over 550,000. With many potential hazards (severe weather, nearby nuclear power plant, etc.), numerous shelters may need to be opened, and that means volunteers to staff them. We need your help!

what will my organization do if we adopt a shelter?

You will agree to a one-year commitment to work at a shelter within Brevard County, if a situation occurs and the shelter is opened. The agreement will be renewed annually prior to hurricane season (June 1). The Red Cross will register your group and establish a main point of contact who will be able to reach out to the rest of your team. Through this program, the American Red Cross will complete background checks and provide annual shelter fundamentals training.
