Learning of English for International Communication
Basic Elements #1Basic Elements #1 Using English in order to learn English is the
best way. It makes learning more meaningful and more effective - and EVEN enjoyable!
Studying a bicycle is NOT the same as riding one. Studying English is not the same as communicating in and using English.
Using English to communicate is a whole body and mind activity. It takes practice and experience to make progress. There are some risks - making mistakes is totally normal.

Basic Elements #2Basic Elements #2 While grammar, vocabulary and reading are
essential basic skills, real communication requires listening and speaking. (TOEIC RL / SW)
In order to start to develop EIC, you may need to re-think a lot of how you have limited yourself.
Like trying to ride a bicycle with no handlebars
or pedals, you can’t really use English without some putting in your own effort, energy, and desire to move ahead.

Basic Elements #3Basic Elements #3 You will also need to acquire some new learning
strategies and, perhaps, a new attitude about learning English in order to learn to actually use English.
Having your own personal goal or goals for what you want to achieve in USING English will help to guide you - in this and beyond - even after college graduation.
Self-confidence, a desire to communicate, the
willingness to take some risks, and flexibility of thinking are more important than correctness of grammar or vocabulary when you are trying to learn to communicate in another language.

Learning English For Life Learning English For Life Maintaining and developing your English
language skills is an on-going, life-long learning activity.
Once you start your major studies and then start working, it won’t be so easy to maintain or develop your English language abilities. So don’t waste what you have now – at least, try to maintain your
skills or improve them.

activity. Once you start your major studies and then start working, it won’t be so easy to maintain or develop your English language abilities. So don’t waste what you have now – at least, try to maintain your

studying English to maintain or improve your English language skills.
Just because you entered university does NOT mean that you should ONLY study what you are required. Just because it is required does NOT
mean it is not in your best interests.
What are your goals for your education and a career?
What types and levels of English ability will you need to achieve those goals?
Why should learning English should be a goal?
Why should learning English should be a goal?
1. Maintaining and developing – “Use it or lose it.” Investing in yourself and your own ability shows your worth to your future
employer.
2. your English language skills - Reading, Writing, Listening & Speaking – all or select one or two
3. is an on-going, life-long – Now is the time when you have the most time. Don’t put off until tomorrow what you can do best today.
4. learning actively. – Studying is only one form of learning – using English is better than “studying”– memorizing, drilling, or practicing

Why do you need English? Why do you need English? You have spent 6-8 years already studying
English, it would be a “waste” ( もったいない) if you just let it fade away.
“Life is long but time is short.!” Before you know it, you will be finishing university and looking for a job. Then you’ll really be busy and making time to learn English (or other life/career skills will be
even harder.)

You should try to get a measurable outcome that will expand your ACTIVE ability in English - understanding comes first but EXPRESSING oneself is the very important SECOND step.
