Game Changers2012

Last August 31st, at the Rotary Club, CarlGuardino, President and CEO, Silicon ValleyLeadership Group (composed of 345 com-panies) presented a preview of projectionswhich looks forward into the future of Sili-

con Valley’s micro economy and its jobs market. Theseprojections will be presented by three panels at theGame Changers 2012 forum. Each panel is composed ofleaders who will look ahead at trends and issues whichimpact Silicon Valley.

These include governance, civic discourse, and inno-vation.

All panels will discuss GAME CHANGERS 2012 andwill focus on Silicon Valley’s Changing Economic En-gine, Redefining Public Services, and Staying Competi-tive as a State and Nation.

Guardino observed that ”Life is a partnership. Andthe partnership is led by those who make a difference. As a society, as governed and government, we are at atipping point.””The eventual direction we will take by choice or by

default will determine our future. The choices of goalsand means require definition and content as they arethe “game changers . Solutions will come from “In-spiration, Innovation, and Ideas.””They will necessarily be made at the speed of busi-

ness. Jobs and unemployment are at the forefront asour biggest economic challenge.””A job begets other jobs, jobs produce wealth for

the job-holders and that wealth produces taxes to sus-tain government. Change must come in the Tax Code,Education, Investment, Research and Efficiency.”

In February 2007, Governor Arnold Schwarzeneggerappointed Carl Guardino to a four-year term on the Cal-ifornia Transportation Commission.

Governor Jerry Brown reappointed him this year. Healso serves on numerous other boards and is activelyinvolved in a wide range of community organizationsand projects.

In 2000, the San Jose Mercury News namedGuardino one of the ”Five Most Powerful” persons inSilicon Valley in a once-per-decade study.

Guardino has been the chief executive of the SiliconValley Leadership Group since 1997.

He previously served as a vice president with theorganization 1991 to 1995. A San Jose State graduate,he also held an executive position in governmental af-fairs with Hewlett-Packard. He spent six years on thestaff of Central Valley Assemblyman Rusty Arias withthe last three as his chief assistant.

As publisher, I encourage all Latino leaders to at-tend this. Game Changers 2012 Forum on Tuesday,September 13, 2011 at the Santa Clara Convention Cen-ter. To register for Game Changers, please visit the fol-lowing link: http://gamechangers2012.eventbrite.com/or phone 408-501-7879 for information.

By Norma L. MolinaDietitian- Nutritionist

As a registered die-titian/nutritionistfor 15 years, I have

been working with over-weight children and theirfamilies throughout theSanta Clara County, neverimagining how much theirhealthy well being would beaffected.

I have been working withkids who already have adulthealth problems, includinghigh cholesterol and triglyc-erides, pre-diabetes andeven diabetes type 2. Sadly, the majority of those childrenare Latinos.

The concern is not somuch about their weight; themain concern is the alarmingepidemic of pre-diabetes anddiabetics experienced today.

The Centers for DiseaseControl and Prevention esti-mate that 1 in 3 children bornin 2000, and after, will de-velop type 2 diabetes in theirlifetime. That estimate in-creases to 1 in 2 for Latinochildren!

Many parents ask, “whyis my child pre-diabetic or di-abetic? One of many an-swers is their lifestyle; whatthey are eating and the phys-ical activity they are notdoing. It’s the environmentthey live in today as much astheir genes that contribute to

their risk of developing dia-betes and other chronic dis-eases.

When conducting classesabout the development andpersonal management of di-abetes, I discuss the genes ofour grandparents, greatgrandparents, and as farback as we can remember.

How did most of themtravel from one location toanother? Did they go by car, take a taxi, or a bus? No, theywalked. Every day theywalked. How much do wewalk today? We hardly walkeveryday. How many hoursdid you play outdoors whenyou were your child’s age? Most say 3-4 hours or moreevery day.

Today, the majority playless than 1 hour outdoors, ifat all. Children’s physical ac-tivity is at its lowest. Thereare several reasons why, butfocus on sedentary screentime in the homes, watchingTV, video games, and com-puters. How many hours didyou, or your grandparents, watch TV? Probably zero.

How many TV’s are inyour homes today? Most sayone in each room, includingthe children’s rooms. This isa big challenge since our chil-dren would rather be indoorsin front of a screen than to beactively playing outdoorswith peers. As Latinos we

have the genes of a veryphysically active race, but weare no longer active, we aresedentary today.

Consider how and whatour grandparents ate. Theyate home cooked meals withnatural, fresh, unprocessedfoods containing a goodamount of fiber from sourceslike beans, vegetables, andfruits. Usually they drankonly water, and very little, ifany, sweetened beverages.Today we eat and drink theopposite of our grandpar-ents.

We as Latinos also havethe genes of healthy eaters, but are eating less homecooked meals and too muchprocessed foods, instead ofbeans, vegetables, & fruits;and drinking too much sug-ary drinks such as soda andjuice, instead of water andmilk.

As a responsible parenthelp reduce the risk of yourchild developing diabetes byfirst clearing your home of allsweet drinks such as sodas, juices, flavored waters, andall sweets and white flourfoods like cookies, pan dulce, chips, white bread, sugary ce-reals, etc. Have only waterand milk in the home todrink, and eat fruits insteadof drinking juices.

Offer vegetables forsnacks and/or meals every

day, instead of 2-3 days aweek just in soups. The moreyou offer vegetables at home, the more opportunities your

child has to taste and eatthem. And, just like ourgrandparents, eat beans atleast 5 days a week; daily iseven healthier.

Secondly, remove the TVfrom your child’s bedroom. This makes it too convenientfor your child to spend manyhours watching TV indoorsand less likely to go outdoorsto play actively.

To prevent diabetes type2, one of the most importanthealthy lifestyle habits to de-velop is to be physically ac-tive every day. For children, this means playing at least 1to 2 hours every day out-doors after school, especiallysince playing times at schoolare shorter.

Latinos possess activeand healthy eating genes, butwe live in a toxic environ-ment.

This may be a factor forsuch high rates of pre-dia-betes and diabetes type 2amongst us. Do decrease the

risk of your child being the 1in 2 Latino children who willdevelop diabetes type 2.Teach them to appreciatehomemade natural, fresh, unprocessed foods, and to bephysically active by playingoutdoors every day. Becometheir role model just as yourgrandparents were yours.

Learn as much as youcan about diabetes type 2 toenable you to be able to de-tect it early and undertakesustainable prevention.

You can start by attend-ing the American DiabetesAssociation “Feria de Saludy Bienestar on Sunday, Sep-tember 10, from 12pm to 5pm at San Jose’s BerryessaFlea Market.

Hidalgo encabeza inicial-mente unos cien mil

Parents and evengrandparents arenow doing home-

work alongside their chil-dren. According to theNational Center for Educa-tion Statistics (NCES), highereducation enrollment of stu-dents age 25 and older rose43 percent between 2000and 2009. From 2010 to2019, NCES projects a 23percent rise in college enroll-ments of students age 25and older.

Many adults are striving

to find the balance betweenwork, family and education;others feel they are too over-whelmed by responsibilitiesto even consider pursuing ahigher degree.

However, options doexist. Online education is agreat solution for workingadults seeking an advanceddegree. Online programs en-able working adults to ac-commodate their busyschedules. However, despitethe schedule flexibility thatonline learning offers, adultstudents still must prioritize

their responsibilities andcommitments in order tocomplete assignments ontime.

”Parents aren’t the onlyones who need to under-stand that going back toschool is a time-consumingprocess. Everyone in thefamily should understandthe commitment as well,”says Savitri Dixon-Saxon,Ph.D., LPC, NCC, associatedean of Walden University’sSchool of Counseling and So-cial Service. Walden Univer-sity offers more than 60online doctoral, master’s andbachelor’s degree programs.

Here are five tips fromDr. Dixon-Saxon for achiev-ing balance:

* Choose a focus or spe-cialization that you truly careabout. The juggling act willbe much more challengingfor you if you don’t enjoyyour field of study. Choose afocus area you are passion-ate about.

* Set aside time for your

studies. Set specific timeframes for studying andcompleting assignments. This requires discipline andtime management, but onceyou establish a routine, it canhelp keep you on track.

* Find a place to do yourstudies. It’s easy to be dis-tracted, so find a quiet place

to study away from exces-sive noise and interruptions.

* Ask for help. Make con-nections early on with class-mates and faculty membersto set up online study groupsand start the term off right.

* Renew your energy.Take time for yourself aspart of your schedule. Spend

time with your family andfriends to recharge your bat-teries.

The San Jose Mexican Heritage andMariachi Festival will kick off Sep-tember 18. This year will be known

as VivaFest, in an effort to recognize 20years of Latino music, theater, film, and vi-sual arts with educational music, danceworkshops and community conversations.

The Mexican Heritage Corporation hasproduced the festival once a year in Sep-tember. It’s a destination event that show-cases Latino culture. There’s something foradults, kids, music lovers and film aficiona-dos, and individuals interested in Mexicanheritage crafts and the visual arts.

On September 23, Los Lobos will per-form at the San Jose State Event Centeralong with The Spanish Harlem Orchestraand special guest Tito Puente, Jr.

A band from East Los Angeles, LosLobos, has subtly challenged their fans withconscience-raising dongs and thought-pro-voking lyrics. They have been around sincethe early 70’s and have evolved artisticallywhile never losing sight of their humbleroots. They are a rare example of longevityin an unpredictable music world thatstresses style over substance.

On September 25, there will be anotherconcert. Entitled Once Upon A Time A Mari-

achi Musical, this series is an original musi-cal commissioned by the Festival with sup-port form the National Endowment for theArts. It will feature Vicki Carr Mariachi Cobre,Mariachi Sol de Mexico, Mariachi ReynadeLos Angeles and Mariachi Nuevo Tecalitlan.San Jose’s very own Folklorico Company LosLupenos will also perform.

Vikki Carr has won three GrammyAwards and has released over 60 best-sell-ing recordings. She has performed for theQueen of England, five US presidents andsold-out shows around the world.

Tow brothers and their friends foundedMariachi Cobre in Tucson, Arizona. This pro-fessional group of Mexican Americans menhave sung the music of Mexico, not only inthis country but have become ambassadorson other countries as well.

Although you must purchase tickets tothe concerts, VivaFest will offer a free out-door festival. Everyone from local mariachisto nationally renowned artists will perform. There will also be family craft activities, ven-dors selling authentic Mexican art, food, andmuch more.

Tickets can be purchased for the con-certs through http://vivafest.org/tickets orby phone at (800) 745-3000.

When Beth Emhoff (Gwyneth Paltrow) returnsto Minneapolis from business in Hong Kong, what she thought was jet lag takes a virulent

turn. Two days later, she’s dead in the ER and the doctorstell her shocked and grieving husband (Matt Damon) theyhave no idea why.

Soon, others exhibit the same mysterious symptoms:hacking coughs and fever, followed by seizure, brain hem-orrhage...and ultimately, death. In Minneapolis, Chicago,London, Paris, Tokyo and Hong Kong, the numbers quicklymultiply: one case becomes four, then sixteen, then hun-dreds, thousands, as the contagion sweeps across all bor-ders, fueled by the countless human interactions thatmake up the course of an average day. A global pandemicexplodes.
