Getting to Praguehttp://magistrat.praha.eu/lang/l2http://www.praha.eu/jnp/en/home/index.html

Arriving by AirAll international flights arrive at Prague Ruzyně Airport, located approximately 20 km of the city centre. You can getinto the city centre either by a city bus + metro (we recom-

mend especially bus Nos. 119, 179 and 100 since they are thefastest ones; bus stop Terminal 2 is located just in front ofthe “Arrivals” building and tickets can be obtained by the busdriver or info stand in the arrival hall, timetables athttp://www.dpp.cz/en/ or by catching a taxi or using theairport minibus shuttle service (white vans of companyCEDAZ).

There are several ways you can get from the airport to youraccommodation:

1. Take a taxiThis is undoubtedly the most comfortable way to travel, butalso the most expensive. Prices for a taxi journey from theairport into town range from CZK 160 – CZK 1,050, depen-ding on your precise destination. You will find a price list forthe service offered by Airport Cars FIX by the company’sstand in the airport lounge. If you decide to use a taxi, makesure you get a written estimate for the cost of your journeyfrom the company in the airport lounge before you set out, since this reduces the chance of the driver trying toovercharge you.

2. Hire a city shuttle vanto take you direct to the dormitory/flat.This is charged at a flatrate of CZK 280 – CZK 680 for 1–4 people, or CZK 480 –CZK 960 for 5–8 people, and is generally cheaper than takinga taxi. However, it is also slower, since the van will have up toeight passengers, and will have to visit up to eight differentaddresses. Write down the address of your dormitory/flatto show the shuttle driver as he may not be fluent in English.

IMPORTANT!To take any public transport you will need to buy a tran-sport ticket, and you must remember to validate the ticket bydate-stamping it when you get on the bus/tram/metro.Reckon on CZK 26 for a single ticket that is valid fora journey that includes bus/tram/metro changes; this ticketis valid 75 minutes when travelling in one direction, at theweekends and in night 90 minutes. We recommend you geta 24-hours, 3 or 5-days ticket so that you can use theticket until your transport prepaid ticket is issued. Prices:http://www.dpp.cz/en/fares/.

Timetables can be found on http://www.dpp.cz/en/or www.idos.cz.

There are several direct trains departing forHradec Králové every day from this railway station.2. Holešovice Railway Station (Nádraží Holešovice) is linkedwith Hlavní nádraží and Florenc by metro line C.

Arriving by Bus or CarThere are numerous buses linking Prague with HradecKrálové. Most of them depart from Florenc Bus Terminal(changing point between metro lines C and B) every 30 to 60minutes.The journey takes less than 2 hours. If driving a car take the route No. E67 (D11) from Prague toHradec Králové (approx. 90 min). P U B L I C T R A N S P O R TGeneral Information on PublicTransportThe Czech Republic offers an excellent public transport sys-tem in every major city. Between the cities, we have bothgood bus and train connection. The intercity buses are generally cheaper than trains, but tobe sure of getting a seat on the major routes you should makean advance reservation. In the Czech Republic it is absolu-tely normal to sell standing places on intercity buses for thesame price as the seats. Not every company does it (it’s notpossible e.g. by Student Agency offering the cheapest bus con-nection between Prague and Plzeň and Prague and Brno), sowithout a pre-reserved ticket you may not be allowed on the bus.To find your bus or train connections inside the CzechRepublic please visit: www.idos.cz (switch to English/German - right bottom corner).

PublicTransport within the CitiesTravelling on Single-Ride TicketsTickets are available from many newsstands and tobacconists, ticket offices in the metro, and from automatic machines inthe metro and at selected bus and tram stops. Single ticketscost from CZK 18 to CZK 26.In Prague the CZK 26 tickets are valid for 75 minutes ofunlimited travel between 5:00 and 20:00 on weekdays, andfor 90 minutes of unlimited travel at all other times(weekends and night). You may change between trams, buses, the metro and trains (in area of Prague) as you wish. Youdo not need to have a new ticket, regardless of how manytimes you change, until the time period runs out. Use a CZK26 ticket to get from the airport to the dormitory orintercity tram/bus station. More on: http://www.dpp.cz/en/.

In Hradec Králové and Plzeň, you will need a new singleticket after each change between buses/trams.http://www.dpmhk.cz/about-us.htm (Hradec Králové)http://www.pmdp.cz/index.php?lang=en (Plzeň)

Validation of Single-RideTickets,Ticket InspectionAfter boarding a bus, tram, or upon entering the metro, tickets must be date-stamped in order to make them valid.Your ticket is not valid without the time and date or withoutmarked specific code.Ticket inspectors may fine you if youare caught travelling without a stamped/marked ticket.

Travel passesIf you use local transport regularly, you can save money andtime by purchasing season tickets. Passes are valid for unlimi-ted travel on any bus, tram or (in Prague) metro line throug-hout the city area. They are also valid on some suburbantrain routes up to the city boundary. The ISIC card of theCharles University with the faculty coupon can now serveas transport pass (you have to only add the transport cou-pons for the period of your stay in the Czech Republic).

Prague PublicTransportThe metro is the quickest way to travel long distances acrossthe city. It has three lines: A (green), B (yellow) and C (red). It closes down for the night shortly after midnight andreopens at 5:00.Trams and buses connect the Metro systemto outlying areas, and are also a handy way to make shortjourneys in the city centre.

The most efficient form of night transport is the network ofnight trams that runs from about midnight until the metroreopens. Night trams run very precisely with a 30-minute in-terval, and rendezvous with each other at selected stations tofacilitate passenger transfers (the central changing point isLazarská tram stop). The night trams are No. 51–59. Nos. 57and 59 go to Nádraží Hostivař (Hostivař dormitory). Forfurther information on public transport in Prague (fares, list ofroutes and timetables), visit http://www.dpp.cz, where youwill find comprehensive information in English.

Ticket InspectionTicket officers (often accompanied by policemen) travelwidely around the transport system and frequently askpassengers to show their tickets or passes. Passengers whoare travelling without a valid pass or ticket are subject to afine, which must be paid on the spot (especially in the case offoreigners). All officers carry both a metal badge and a photo-ID card (průkaz), which are numbered. The number on thetwo forms of ID should be identical. Always insist on gettinga receipt. This may help you if you want to receive part of themoney back (e.g. due to having a valid travel pass you haveforgotten at home).

IMPORTANT!After you have obtained a travel pass (plus valid coupons forthe selected period of time) you cannot be fined at the fullrate (in Prague) even if you forget your pass at home. In thiscase, please, note that you have to inform the ticket inspec-tor and pay a lower fine at the central office of the tran-sport’s agency. In Prague this agency is called Dopravní podnik

and the address of its office is Na Bojišti 5 (5 minutes walkfrom metro station I. P. Pavlova).

UsingTaxisUnfortunately, taxi drivers have quite a bad reputation inPrague. There is no standard price for taxi services, but driversare required to display their prices, usually on the door.A reasonable price is around CZK 25 per km, but it is a goodidea to agree on a price before you commit to a ride, and besure that the meter is running while you are in the taxi.Three usually reliable companies whose dispatchers speakEnglish are AAA RadioTaxi (Tel. +420 222 333 222; 14014),ProfiTaxi (Tel. +420 844 700 800), Halo Taxi(Tel. +420 244 114 411).

M E D I C A L C A R EA N D H E A L T H I N S U R A N C EIf you hold valid medical insurance which covers your stayin the Czech Republic, standard medical treatment isobtainable free of charge from the Czech Health Insurancefund, in conjunction with your health insurance policy at home.It is important to contact a medical institution, such as adoctor, dentist or a hospital that has a contract with Czechpublic health insurance system. Most of them have, but someinstitutions are purely private and here you would have payany costs that should arise.

IMPORTANT!From January 2008, patients have to pay a small administra-tive charge for each visit to the doctor and each prescriptionissued. Most of these charges will be in the range of € 1-3approx., depending on the exact treatment required.

Your European Health Insurance Card (EHIC)or Provisional certificate isued by one of the registrated sub-jects (www.cnb.cz Financial Market Supervision List andregisters) has to be submitted to the attending physician. If you do have neither of these documents, the physiciancan insist on cash payment.

In order for thedoctor to ensurehis or her ownre imbur sementfrom the contrac-ting Czech healthinsurance fund,

he or she will need to see your EHIC card, or Provisionalcertificate and will copy the information onto anotherspecific internal form, known as "Potvrzení o nároku"(Certificate of entitlement). The doctor will also need to checkyour ID document (passport, ID card, driver’s license).

The doctor will normally ask you to confirm your expectedlength of stay in the territory of the Czech Republic and willadvise you to choose one of Czech contracting healthinsurance funds. You will confirm your choice and expectedlength of your stay by signature in above-mentioned"Potvrzení o nároku" (Certificate of entitlement). If any medicines, laboratory tests, or any further examinati-ons are prescribed, the doctor should give you an appropriatenumber of copies of "Potvrzení o nároku" (Certificate ofentitlement). The copy should then be submitted to thepharmacy, laboratory or surgery. Please bear in mind, that your European health card insurance(or Provisional certificate) entitles you only to coverage ofthe costs of standard or urgent medical care in the CzechRepublic. Czech doctors are instructed to try to ensure thatyou need not leave the country earlier than you planned asa result of medical problems.Other kinds of medically related care, e.g. non-urgent treat-ment, or medically assisted transport home following seriousillness or injury, are normally not covered by the standardinsurance, and for these eventualities we recommend youtake out extra medical or commercial travel insurance with aninsurance provider in your home country.

In case of medical need, visitors with, Provisional certificateor the EHIC can go to the doctor/dentist/hospital directlywith this document. If you are staying in the CR for a relati-vely long period (1 semester) you may – if you wish – makea direct agreement with a Czech health insurance company, and register with it. As the registration document you willobtain "Potvrzení o registraci" (Certificate of Registration)which can be submitted to any doctor/dentist/at the hospitalbefore getting treatment.Standard dental care is generally covered by the healthinsurance system. As in other EU countries, however, someforms of non-essential (cosmetic) treatment or higher qualitymaterials require extra payments. If you need treatment by a specialist, the general practitionerwill refer you to one. In urgent cases visitors can go toa hospital with EHIC directly. In other cases the practitionerissues a recommendation for admission to hospital. Urgenttransport to the hospital is covered by the insurance systemand is provided free of charge. In case of urgent medicaltransport or in case of treatment by a doctor from theemergency service it is also necessary to present your EHICor Provisional certificate. If the doctor decides to prescribe medicines, he or she willissue a prescription. Medicines and non-prescription drugs areavailable and sold at pharmacies only - they are not availableat supermarkets, as in some West European countries.(Pharmacies may be recognised by the prominent green cross

displayed over the shop-front. Many ofthem have staff that can speak Englishor German, and are used to offeringadvice to tourists - especially in the citycentres). For some medicines thepatient must make some financial con-tribution while some groups of drugs are free for the patient. You have to pay an administrative fee with each prescription, however. There are also compulsory prescription charges on somemedications, materials and forms of dental treatment.Thesecharges are not refundable. If you (by mistake or for any otherreason) pay cash for medical treatment that is covered byyour home insurance company, you will have to apply forreimbursement at home since such costs are not refundablewithin the CR.Students from outside non-EU countries are not covered bythe EU’s form, and they therefore must have a validinternational medical insurance plan, or they must expect topay cash for all medical care. In case of emergency or anaccident use any hospital or health clinic. If your medical problem isn't an emergency, Prague hasseveral clinics that cater to English-speaking clients that canprovide a network of services from basic examination toaccompanying a patient to the hospital. Please note, however, that these are usually commercial operations that may chargea high fee.

OTHER USEFUL INFORMATIONPublicTelephonesCalls can be made from public telephone boxes operating oncoins and cards. Call boxes on the street are usually glassstructures with yellow roofs, and may be found all over the re-public. Phones are also located at metro stations and somepost offices. Most call boxes now operate on phone cards(available at newsagents, tobacconists, post offices, depart-ment stores, etc.), and students would be well advised tocarry one with them. Phone cards come with differentamounts of phone-time credit and vary in cost.Currently three mobile telephone network operators func-tion in the Czech Republic: O2,T-mobile and Vodafone. Forusing a mobile telephone in the Czech Republic it is advanta-geous to use prepaid cards (O2 Go, Twist and Vodafonekarta), which are cheaper than in West European countries.

Cost of LivingThe cost of living in the Czech Republic is on average com-parable to that of other Central and East European countries.A single student is advised to have available approximatelyCZK 8 500 (cca € 330) per month to cover food, basic tran-sport and accommodation.

Rent CZK 3,000 – 6,000Food CZK 3,800 – 4,200Public Transport CZK 250 – 300Leisure Time CZK 1,000 – 3,000Total CZK 8,050 – 13,500

Be aware that the level of rent varies depending on whichcity you live in, whether you use the University dormitory orprivate place and if you share the flat or not.The final cost ofyour living, of course, depends on your personal spendinghabits.

CateringCharles University has a number of student cafeterias andrestaurants at different University locations. Student’s pricesare guaranteed with a Charles University ISIC card used newlyalso for paying for the meals (approx. CZK 40/meal).

Internet connectionInternet access is provided for students in the hall of residenceand at the university. The Hostivař Hall of Residence offersthe possibility of Internet connection in all rooms in all buil-dings. This is a land line and the student must have his/herown cable. To get connected a student must present the Stu-dent Identity Card that he/she has been given on registration.Connecting is administered by the hall of residence reception, and the connection is activitated within 24 hours of submit-ting the request. The rate for Internet and notebook is roughlyCZK115 per month. This charge is paid with the accommo-dation charge. If the accommodation charge is not paid ontime, the Internet stops functioning. The Bolevecká (Plzeň)and Na Kotli (Hradec Králové) Halls of Residence also offerInternet connection in every room. At the faculties studentscan enjoy free access to the Internet in computer studyrooms, and also wi-fi connection. Students get their accesslogin to the university network at the same time as theirStudent Identity Cards on registration.

For registered readers the libraries also offer Internetconnection (Czech National Library – www.nkp.cz, freewi-fi connection to the library network in all study rooms). You can also use the services of Internet cafés.

Money exchange, paying in shopsAlthough many shops accept payment in Euros, we recom-mend that you pay in cash in CZK (Czech crowns), becausethe exchange rate used by the shops does not necessarilycorrespond to the current CZK to Euro exchange rate.Charge cards and credit cards can be used in the standardway, but not every shop here accepts them. Non-cash pay-ments may almost always be made in the large departmentstores and supermarkets.

It is definitely safer to use bank services rather than exchangemoney in the exchange offices. While most of the streetexchange offices offer the best exchange rates, if you decideto use their services you must be very careful. In mostexchange offices the client pays no charge for the exchangeand there is no minimum limit on sums to be exchanged.

You can also exchange money in banks. The rates are lessadvantageous here but you have the security of knowing thatyou will not be cheated. Most of the banks have a charge forexchange, and its level depends on the sum exchanged. The opening hours of most of the banks on working days arefrom 9:00 to 17–18:00, and they are usually closed at theweekends.

For current exchange rates go to the pages of the CzechNational Bank: http://www.cnb.cz/en/index.html.
