Naval Academy midshipmen participate in a wide

variety of activities during the summer serving on

board ships alongside enlisted and ofcer personnel,traveling to foreign countries, working on internshipswith different companies, even chasing tornados.

Midshipman 1st Class Haley Doyle was looking forsomething to work toward this summer while attendingclasses back in Annapolis, and a 100-mile cycle insupport of juvenile diabetes research posed an ideal

challenge.

Approximately 170 cyclists from all over the country

participated in the July 27 event, raising more than$600,000 to help fund research into a cure for Type 1diabetes, a genetic condition that prevents the bodyfrom producing insulin. Doyle raised $5,377.

Cuthbert and Midshipman 1st Class John Mackovjakwere able to take their summer training in a differentdirection with a research trip to Turkey.

REFORM PICNIC WELCOMES BACK MIDSHIPMENThe Naval Academy kicked off the 2013-14 academic year with food, fun and music ... and a dunk tank.

ANNAPOLIS 10-MILE RUNSome roads in the vicinity of the Naval Academy will

be temporarily closed from 7-9:15 a.m. Sunday, Aug.25 for the Annapolis 10-mile run. The route will startat Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium, run downRowe Blvd. to Main St. and pass Gate 1. The route

continues left on King George St., right on Taylor, righton Highway 450, across the Naval Academy Bridgeand through Ferry Farms and Pendennis Mount. Thelast two miles will be back across the bridge to TaylorAvenue with the winner nishing at the stadium atabout 7:50 a.m., and the last runner at about 9:15 a.m.Those on the North Severn side will be able to leaveduring this time by turning right on Baltimore-AnnapolisBoulevard from Greenbury Point Rd. and right againon St. Margarets Rd. Highway 450 from E. SevernRidge Road to the USNA bridge will be open in both

directions to local trafc. The bridge itself, westbound,will be open to USNA/Navy Housing trafc only, butexpect delays. Highway 450 from King George Streetto Gate 8 will be closed to trafc during this time. Gate1 will be open, but expect delays from 7:10-7:45 a.m.
