Welcome to the 27th European Film Festivalin YangonCinema allows us to travel without taking a single step. A good film can take us on a round trip from Myanmar to Europe and back in a matter of two hours. But more importantly, films can take us on a journey into the depths of the human heart – a mysterious land fraught with dangers, adventure, love and joy. The European Union in Myanmar and our friends from Norway, Israel and Switzerland would like to invite you on such a journey over the next two weeks through the seventeen movies presented at the 27th European Film Festival in Yangon.

European films have their own, special nature. They are often ironic, unexpected and seldom heroic. They tend to explore our imperfec-tions and the true face of human nature. That‘s why these stories are intriguing and relevant to everyone. This year, the festival‘s films will take you from summer camps to bars filled with jazz music, from classrooms to battlefields – all to show you the uniqueness of our diverse European society, culture and history.

The European Film Festival is one of the longest standing film fes-tivals in Myanmar. For almost three decades we are presenting the best European film making has to offer, promoting cultural exchange between Myanmar and Europe. Wien, 1918. The First World War is about to end and the famous painter Egon Schiele is lying on his death bed. At the young age of 28 he has fallen ill with the Spanish flu, which has already claimed his pregnant wife Edith. While taking care of him, his sister Gerti remembers the women who influenced Schiele’s life and artwork. His first muse was Gerti herself, who has a close relationship to her brother and at a young age served as a life model. Later there was the dancer Moa, followed by his long-term lover Wally, with whom he moved away from the big city and who modelled for some of his most important paintings. Schiele’s paintings make him a character worthy of intrigue and gossip. In the city he hosts great exhibitions, while also soliciting harsh criticism with his provocative display of female nudity. When the war finally reaches him, Schiele leaves Wally and marries the devout Edith, who lives op-posite his studio together with her sister and who comes from a good family. Yet, Schiele’s devotion to his art jeopardises his marriage.

This film documents Schiele’s 28 years from an interesting perspective, following the most important women in his life. A fascinating portrait of one of the most influential modern painters in Austria, who challenged social conventions with his art and lifestyle.

To earn a spot in the finale of the European brass band competition, the Flemish band Sint Cecilia has to pay a high price: after literally giving everything during their performance, their soloist and best player collapses. Full of despair, the band mourns its loss, wonder-ing how they will ever manage to beat their greatest competitor – the Walloon band En Avant – without their bandmate? But luckily, Elke, the conductor’s daughter, has an idea and recruits the cocky but talented trumpet player Hugues. Soon life is turned upside down in the small Flemish town. Charming and good-looking Hugues has a way with the ladies, and triggers conflicts with his impetuous temperament and rowdy behaviour. Elke, who is usually so mature and well behaved, is increasingly fascinated by this mysterious musician, and even risks her own engagement to the respectable and wealthy Renaat.

Belgian Rhapsody is a heartfelt Belgian romantic comedy and a charming musical. With tender and stirring tunes the actors sing and dance their way through the film and into the hearts of the audience. Putting a humorous twist on the long standing quarrels between the Walloons and the Flemish, Belgian Rhapsody has great appeal in order to better understand the tension between the two ethnic groups.

This gently comedic story takes place in the suburbs of Prague in 1967 during the Christ-mas period. Two families – the Sebeks and Krausovás – are living together in an old villa. Teenager Michal Sebek has a crush on the girl upstairs Jindriska Krausová who is already in a relationship. Their fathers have a dispute which turns into an ideological controversy; Mr. Sebek has a strong belief in the communist system meanwhile his neighbour Mr. Krausová, who is a war veteran and a true patriot, supports the resistance. As the fathers are stuck squabbling over ideologies, their children are more interested in modern music and clothes from the West. As if this wasn’t painful enough a marriage between the families forces the two rivals to come even closer together.

A historical movie about the time leading up to the Prague Spring which took place 50 years ago. Hřebejk succeeds in instilling good humour into this thought-provoking drama which ridicules both the communist and the ardent anti-communist.

Land of Mine

In May 1945 the Second World War finally comes to an end. All over Europe German soldiers are imprisoned and Denmark, formerly occupied by Nazi-Germany, is no exception. During the final two years of the war, more than two million landmines have been buried on the beaches of the Western coast of Denmark by the German army to prepare for a potential attack by the allies (which actually took place in June 1944, not in Denmark, but in French Normandy). The Danes forced 2000 German prisoners of war to clear the mines. Almost half the soldiers were heavily wounded or lost their lives during this mine-clearing campaign.

Telling the story of a group of young German prisoners, this film teaches us about events which remain largely unknown. Barely 16 years of age, the boys were removed from school and forced to serve in the army. Under the command of the Danish Sergeant Rasmussen, they are expect-ed to clear 45,000 deadly landmines from a section of the beach. After years of brutal military occupation, the hatred towards Germany in the hearts of the Danish people is understandable. The clearance of the mines is a punishment, and at first Rasmussen drives the young Germans mercilessly. Lying on their bellies they have to comb the beach until they find a mine, which they then have to defuse with their bare hands. It does not take long until the first prisoners fall victim to one of the mines. The sergeant begins to feel sympathy for the innocent boys, however, the next catastrophe is just around the corner…

This Danish production is full of suspense and handles a difficult historical topic with remarkable self-criticism. The film is internationally recognized and has received several awards. In 2016 it was nominated as the official Danish Oscar candidate.

Little Wing tells the coming-of-age story of eleven-year-old Varpu. Making matters worse, the girls in the horse stables where Varpu spends her free time have start-ed commenting on her life and asking questions about her parents. Getting increasingly frustrated with her family situation, Varpu finally decides she has had enough. While helping her mother find a suitable man to date, Varpu discovers her father’s name and hometown. All on her own Varpu sets out to track down her father – a journey with a lot of surprises in store.

Vilhunen has created a film which sensibly and intelligently tackles a number of issues which can arise in the stages between childhood and adult life; including bullying, pover-ty, mental illness and dysfunctional families. This emotional and heartwarming drama is definitely a must-see!

Paris, 1943. The city is occupied by German forces. In the clubs life is still bustling despite the occupation, especially where the legendary guitarist Django Reinhardt is performing, getting people on their feet with his Gypsy-Jazz music. While thousands of other Roma are branded as ‘racially inferior’ and are transported en masse to concentration camps, Django feels safe due to his popularity among the Germans. However, when they invite him to do a tour in Germany, he finds himself in a difficult position. With the help of his beautiful mistress Louise he sets out to Lake Geneva on the border of Switzerland together with his elderly mother and pregnant wife. Here they get stuck and have to set up camp alongside their travelling relatives, who are also fleeing. Yet, Django does not manage to hide for long and is captured by the Germans. The situation escalates on the evening of a concert for the region’s Nazi leaders.

Django is an exceptional biographical film concentrating on three years of the life of the legendary guitarist who was a pioneer of European jazz and could work wonders on his guitar despite only having three fingers on his left hand. It tells the often forgotten story of the persecution and discrimination of the unknown hundred thousands of Roma. Around 500.000 of them from all over Europe were deported and many murdered during the Nazi regime, a persecution maintaining its relevance until today. The film is set to an impres-sive soundtrack featuring Reinhardt’s trademark toe-tapping, awe inspiring and upbeat gypsy-jazz fusion tones.

Between 2000 and 2007 nine migrants were murdered in different German cities, most of them of Turkish descent. For years the crimes remained unsolved and the police searched in vain for a perpetrator. By chance it was later revealed that a small right-wing extremist group called the National Socialist Underground (NSU) had committed these murders, in addition to several bomb-ings and robberies. At the same time shocking mistakes made during the investigations were exposed, which had allowed the obvious political motive behind the murders to go unnoticed for such a long time.

Fatih Akin’s film is not specifically based on one of these crimes, but develops its own plot in Hamburg, the story is inspired by the NSU-murders, in particular the nail bomb explosion in Co-logne. Katja has lost her six-year-old son and her husband, who is of Turkish-Kurdish descent, in the bomb attack. After months of insufferable pain from her loss, she faces the anguish of having to witness to the trial of the two perpetrators and even testifying against them herself. She has to defend the life of her deceased husband, who spent several years in prison for a drug offence, but managed to complete his studies while serving time and begin a completely new life. The perpetrators, on the other hand, have a false alibi: A Greek man with connections to right-wing extremism claims that they were together in Greece at the time of the attack… it’s not difficult to imagine how the trial ends.

Akin’s film premiered at the film festival in Cannes in 2017, where the main actress Diane Kruger was awarded the prize for Best Actress. In 2018 In the Fade received the Golden Globes Award for Best Foreign Language Film.

Apples from the Desert

Rivka is a young woman, living a cloistered existence as an only child with her strictly religious Jewish parents in Jerusalem. Unhappy living within the confines of the traditions associated with home and community, she secretly breaks taboos and steals herself away from work and attends dance classes. This is where she meets Dubi, a young man who has nothing to do with religion and lives on a kibbuz, a liberal and secular commune in the desert. Suspicious and angry in the face of Rivka’s growing acts of rebellion, her strict father reacts by setting in motion a prearranged marriage to an older widower with children of his own. Although Rivka’s mother and aunt are appalled, they dare not defy the authoritarian man of the household. Rivka sees no other alternative than to run away with Dubi and follow him to the kibbuz. When her family discover her whereabouts, the conflict culminates in a moment of truth, forcing all of them to confront their beliefs and one another.

Apples from the Desert tells the inspiring story of a brave young woman who wants to take her life into her own hands and is willing to leave everything behind. On one hand this is a typical love story and on the other it is a complex family portrait. This film confronts the timeless issues of tradition versus modernity and questions whether these two can be reconciled.

Perfect Strangers

Do you think you know your best friends? The married couple Rocco and Eva are sure they do, when inviting their long-time friends to a typical Italian dinner in their home. Together with the two other couples Carlotta and Lele and Bianca and Cosimo they are expecting divorcee Pepe with his new girlfriend Lucilla. When Pepe arrives without Lucilla everyone is still curious about this new woman in Pepe’s life. While exchanging some news about life the conversation changes to topics like privacy and secrets. Talking about smartphones, which are the black box of everyone’s life, Eva has the idea that all the friends should put their smartphones on the table and make every message and phone call public to the oth-ers. What starts as a playful game, ends in a night full of uncovered secrets which no one expected.

A juicy comedy-drama which confronts the issue of privacy in our smartphone reality. The film critiques how technology, especially mobile phones, has taken over our lives. Although it is a one-location movie it remains lively and entertaining. The idea is based on a line written by novelist Gabriel Garcia Marquez who says we all have three lives – one public, one private and one secret.

The most important thing in 15-year-old Sieger’s life is sport. He is a talented runner, one of the best in his age group, but at home not everything is quite so easy. Today crevasses in the rock, making it prone to rock slides, are being carefully monitored and controlled with advanced technology and dedicated scientific efforts. The Wave evokes the horror scenario of a future catastrophe which could be triggered by a rock-fall caused by weaknesses in the massive crevasse above the tourist destination of Geiranger which is also home to the local monitoring station.

Experienced Geologist Kristian, has been working at the station for years and is about to leave the rural idyll of Geiranger and move to Stavanger with his family to begin a new job. On his final day of duty the monitors at the station indicate some small changes inside the crevasse. His colleagues initially show no concern, but Kristian has a bad feeling… Leaving his family in the town, he flies to the crevasse with a helicopter to check it out. He sees that there have been significant movements in the rock. Still, his colleagues refuse to trigger the alarm to avoid creating unnecessary panic among the tourists. The following night a massive rock begins sliding down the mountain. By the time the sirens wake people up, it is too late to escape. There is only a matter of minutes before the tsunami wave will hit Geiranger …

Breaking the Limits tells the true story of Jerzy Górski, a small-town Polish drug addict who after years of self-destruction manages to turn his life around. As one of the last countries in Europe (and even in the international comparison) women in Switzerland were not allowed to vote until 1971. Appenzell, 1971. When Nora, a young mother and housewife, decides to start a career and find a job, she is confronted by the rules of her society – a society led by men. When she asks him for permission, her husband refuses, arguing that the current Swiss law obliges women to housework. This is the turning point for Nora, who begins to inform herself about the ideas of feminism and finally joins a local women’s rights movement in the small village of Appenzell. Alongside Vroni and Graziella, they advocate women’s right to vote in Switzerland – a matter which the men are to vote on in the upcoming referendum. More and more women sympathise with the idea of emancipa-tion, and Nora’s commitment evolves into a strike joined by all women in the village.

Following Nora’s journey from a life as a well-behaved housewife to becoming a determined leader of a movement, the audience is taken back to this historical fight for women’s rights. In this comedy-drama Petra Volpe has succeeded in taking a serious issue and putting a good-humoured twist on it – a film definitely worth watching.
