The event started with a dance

class taught by two lovely Korean

volunteers, who were straight out

of a SNSD MTV. Participants of varying abilities learnt fun

dance moves to the K-Pop song, Good Boy, first practiced

as a group and then team demonstrations before a solo

dance-off to fight out the title for best dancer!

Under the patient guidance of the young Korean teachers and Kaplan Student Committee

(KSC), everyone was able to dance in sync and raises hope for a flash mob in campus

one day! After a dance-off Edwin Lim was eventually voted as the best dancer by the rest

of the participants.

Following the energetic dance, two KSC members

commenced to teach some basic Korean language and

simple phrases.

Participants were

taught to introduce

themselves in Korean, which got everyone

excited. Soon enough, the whole room resonated

with Korean chatter as everyone rattled off.

The next and final part of the evening was Taste

of Korea – food tasting and learning how to make

the Korean rice roll known as Kimbap.

Ingredients for this staple included steamed rice,

seaweed, cucumber, carrot, pickles and cooked omelette.

Creative juices soon flowed as everyone started to roll their own version of Kimbap.

Some added cold noodles and fillings from their leftover dumplings. One participant

happily named her Kimbap the Korean Popiah (a local spring roll filled with similar

ingredients). Teams then had to introduce their Kimbap in the new Korean language that

they learnt.

Teams were judged on

their participation,

teamwork and creativity.

Eventually, two teams

stood out. Team Man-Doo

and Team Rice Cake

ended up in a tie through

points picked up from the dance, language and food

challenges. Both teams then battled it out in a tie-breaker themed around Korean

linguistic ability. The judges

announced Team Man-Doo

as the winning team for

their superior content and

showmanship.

SPD Charity Hong Bao 13 & 16 Feb 15

A big thank you to all for your

generous contribution to SPD Charity

Hong Bao 2015! In true Kaplan

tradition, we did not forget the needy

during the Chinese New Year

festivities. Organized by the Student

Affairs & Graduate Services Office,

volunteers from the Kaplan Student

Staff and committee helped to appeal

for funds at the fundraising booths on

13 and 16 February held at both

campuses.

Assistant Manager Edmund Cheong is a pastoral care counsellor in Kaplan. He

consistently focuses on making sure all our students have access to pastoral care

for mental wellness. Often this means going above and beyond to solve problems

that may be hidden below the surface.

Edmund was recently awarded The Kaplan Way Leadership Award 2014 for

Shared Value for his dedication to his work. A stellar case study highlights

Edmund’s dedication to his work. A young man with Asperger's syndrome had

enrolled at Kaplan. His family kept this condition hidden because they feared he’d

be asked to leave yet another school.

During one class the student had become distressed and confused and his

condition came to light. Edmund recognized in the student great potential because

of his writing and programming abilities. He resolved that with extra support, the

student could succeed.

So, Edmund worked with faculty to create a schedule that engaged him

in his work without getting overloaded. To create a personal bond,

Edmund learned on his own time the student’s favorite video games so

they could discuss them during counselling sessions.

These and other support strategies helped turn things around. The

student did well in his courses and earned a Diploma. This allowed him

to pursue a further degree in programming, something that had been

unthinkable before Edmund’s interventions.

Edmund helps our students achieve goals beyond what they and others

believe are possible. His exemplary approach to student support and

counseling ensures our commitment to expanding educational access continues to be a reality. Well done, Edmund!

Are you unhappy with your

current job? Do you drag

your feet to work every day?

Do you feel burnt-out even

before you start your work

day? Chances are that you

are ready for a career

change. But before you start

making your way to ‘greener

pastures’, ask yourself this

question - “Am I really ready

for a career change?”

Changing your career is a

big decision that you will

have to make. You would

not want to be in an

irreversible situation where

you realise that you prefer

to be in your previous job.

So before you embark on

your journey to this big

switch, you might want to

list down the pros and cons

of your current job. Putting

these points down on paper

will allow you to see your

current position more

clearly. Be objective and do

not be biased in noting

these points just because

you want the change. Be

sincere to yourself and

evaluate your points

critically.

With the list of opinions that

you have now, do you think

it is wise for you to make the

career switch? If you do,

then you will need to start

planning for the transition. It

takes plenty of preparation

and careful consideration to

move ahead. Study the

steps needed and find out

the skills or qualification that

you need to move on to

your desired position. This

information will help you

make decisions on the

direction that you should be

heading to.

The next thing that you

should do is to network with

those who are already in the

field that you are planning to

move in to. Get feedback

and insights from these

people as they can provide

you with crucial data which

could help you start in the

industry with the best foot

forward.

Finally, if you have a spouse

or a significant other, it is

important to discuss your

plans and ask for his/her

opinions and support.

Managing your partner’s

expectations and hearing

his/her viewpoint does

matter because you will

need to prepare him/her for

the changes ahead.

Expect plenty of setbacks

and challenges as you

move on in your new career.

It is no easy task to take on

a change especially if you

have been in your previous

job for quite some time. You

will need plenty of

perseverance and be

resilient to go through the

change. Open up your mind

to climb up the steep

learning curve. Ultimately,

do not take hasty steps but

plan your way carefully and

wisely. Also, work with

individuals who can assist

you with the transition. So

how much greener is the

pasture on the other side?

Only you will know when

you are there.

The Kaplan Elites finished fourth in the Singapore Futsal Academy

League Play-Offs. It was a hard fought season for the Elites after

playing nine league matches since November 2014. The results were

particularly impressive considering that the team had only started

playing together for six months. Well done Kaplan Elites!

The Kaplan Knights played their final league

game against Hammertime Basketball Club

in the BBAXN Weekday League Season 18

held at the School of Physical Education on
