Degree of Doctor of Philosophy in HEALTH SCIENCES ADEYEMO Folasade Esther (Full Research) Title of Thesis Occurrence and variations of cryptosporidium and giardia in wastewater treatment and receiving river basins Summary The presence of Cryptosporidium and Giardia, which causes diarrhoea and other gastrointestinal diseases, is a public health concern, particularly in wastewater used for irrigation. The aim of the study was to evaluate the occurrence of Cryptosporidium and Giardia in four KZN wastewater treatment plants (WWTP), as well as receiving water bodies and irrigated vegetation, and to account for viability and reduction of these organisms. Experimental methods included conventional filtration and centrifugation for detection and enumeration; immuno-magnetic separation (IMS) and epifluorescence microscopy for identification; molecular methods (PCR and qPCR) for species differentiation; and UV and chlorination for eradication. While the overall mean reduction after wastewater treatment was substantial for both Cryptosporidium and Giardia, both were detected at downstream sampling points and in crops irrigated with river water. Giardia was reduced to a greater extent by chlorination and UV exposure compared to Cryptosporidium. Cryptosporidium and Giardia concentrations in all treated effluents exceeded WHO risk- based values and South African standards for raw water and irrigation respectively. Stricter regulations and alternative wastewater treatment methods may ensure improved environmental and public health protection. Supervisor: Prof T A Stenstrom Co-Supervisors: Prof P Reddy Prof F Bux KHOZA Thandokuhle Emmanuel (Full Research) Title of Thesis A model to enhance job satisfaction for radiographers employed at selected public tertiary hospitals in the Gauteng province, South Africa Summary The aim of this study was to explore the role of intrinsic and extrinsic factors of job satisfaction amongst radiographers employed by

public tertiary hospitals in the Gauteng province and develop a model to enhance job s atisfaction and improve retention in the public

sector. Exploratory sequential mixed methods design was used to conduct this study. Phase 1 was conducted through focus group

discussions with five purposefully selected radiographers. The findings of Phase 1 were used to develop a questionnaire for conducting

a survey in Phase 2 of the study. A self-administered questionnaire was used to collect data from participants in four selected public

tertiary hospitals. The results from the two phases of data collection showed that the lack of career pathing was the intrinsic factor

that affected job satisfaction. There were four extrinsic factors that affected job satisfaction, namely, government policies,

unsatisfactory remuneration, working conditions and the inefficiency of the human relations department. The outcome of the study

led to the development of a model to enhance job satisfaction for radiographers.

MAJOLA Sindile Fortunate (Full Research) Title of Thesis A model for the integration of homeopathy into the public healthcare system in the province of KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa Summary The introduction of complementary alternative medicine, such as homoeopathy into the public healthcare system exists as one of the

potential resolutions to the burdened healthcare sector in South Africa. The aim of the study was to gather data from healthcare

professionals in KwaZulu-Natal in order to develop a model for integrating homoeopathy into the public healthcare system . An

explanatory sequential mixed methods design guided the study. Phase 1 employed quantitative measurement tools, where data was

collected from medical doctors, nurses and homoeopaths through surveys. Phase 2 incorporated measurement tools, where data was

collected from Chief Operating Officers as well as nursing managers through semi-structured interviews. The results revealed that

the integration of homoeopathy into the public healthcare system would be complex in nature, due to the chang es that would need

to be made in both the public and private sectors. Albeit a model of integration was developed, based on the limitations identified in

this study, further research needs to be conducted to investigate this phenomenon.

Supervisor: Prof M N Sibiya Co-Supervisor: Dr P B Nkosi ZIKALALA Nomusa Penicca (Full Research) Title of Thesis Guidelines to enhance the human caring attributes amongst the undergraduate nursing students and nurse graduates in KwaZulu -Natal Summary The aim of this study was to critically analyse the role played by theoretical and clinical learning experiences in influencing the

development of human caring attributes among undergraduate nursing students and newly graduated professional nurses in the

province of KwaZulu-Natal (KZN) in order to establish clear guidelines that could be used by lecturers to enhance human caring

attributes among the nursing students. The convergent mixed method design was used to guide study. The study was conducted in

selected KZN College of Nursing and University of Technology using the Caring Behaviour Inventory Tool. Data was collected from

the newly graduated professional nurses and nursing students. The quantitative data revealed that the lack of resources, unconducive

working environment and lack of management support impact negatively on the quality of patient care as well as nursing students’

integration of theory into practice. Developed guidelines can be used by lecturers to enhance human caring attributes among t he

nursing students.
