We’re in the midst of a pregnancy scare. No, not me,but one of the two new additions to the Butters’ housemay be with child.

Actually it’s all my fault. I was the one who decided to buy Isobel a pair of baby guinea pigs for her birthday, in an attempt toteach her some responsibility. Now it looks like Hannah MontanaButters has been less than responsible when it comes to birth control. We won’t know for a few weeks but I sort of wish I’d justbought Isobel the Nintendo DS she asked for.

To take our minds off the possible pitter patter of tiny guineapig feet, I called a Families Leeds staff meeting to discuss theChristmas issue. My team, which comprises of a four year old editorial assistant who thinks she’s a fairy and a seven year oldnews editor who thinks I’m a ‘L’oser, suggested the magazineshould be packed with the real meaning of Christmas.

“Pictures of presents, and a competition to win presents,”was the suggestion from Kevina the Tweenager.

“And where to find Father Christmas. If you’re good youcan go and see him. I’m going to ask him for more guineapigs,”adds Fairy Eliza, whose wish may yet be granted.

“And cake… not that fruit cake Papa likes. Chocolate cake.”This suggestion by Isobel was given unanimous approval.

So here it is – a Families Leeds packed with pictures of presents, a sack load of competitions and the ultimate Grottoguide. There’s the chance to win a Harewood Christmas, ticketsto a top Christmas show and a ho ho whole lot more. Give me abeard and a red suit and I could be Santa!

But ‘where’s the cake?’ I hear you cry. Actually, we’re sat eating it, not to celebrate Christmas, but to toast two years ofFamilies Leeds. Hard to believe, I know, but we’ve been part ofyour lives for two whole years. To our loyal advertisers – some ofwhom are now my friends – and our many loyal readers a BIGthank you. It’s a cliché, but we simply couldn’t do it without you.I hope you continue to enjoy being part of the Families’ family,as much as we enjoy being part of yours.

Enjoy Christmas and I’ll let you know in January if Eliza gother wish!

Kumon’s Shoebox Appeal Students with the after school education provider Kumon are being

encouraged to fill a shoebox with educational items, for children

in Romania. The idea is children pack a shoebox with pencils, pens,

rubbers and rulers before decorating it and sending it to Eastern

Europe in time for Christmas.

“If a family has to choose between food and a set of pencils,

it’s understandable why some children do not get a chance at

education,”says Damion Hartley from Kumon in Leeds whose

daughter Jessica (pictured) has joined in with the appeal.

Please Sir…can I have some

MORE?Families Leeds is invited to a NorthLeeds primary school to see how schooldinners are changing.

SAY SCHOOL DINNERS and most of us cast our mindsback to custard you could cut and soggy salads. Howeverstanding in the dinner hall at Chapel Allerton Primary

School, there’s not an ounce of stodge in sight. On the menutoday, pasta in spicy tomato sauce, freshly baked ham andcheese flan and a rhubarb tart that’s going down a treat. Thisschool was the first in Leeds to opt out of council run cateringand look beyond the city to find a private company to providequality food for its 400 pupils. Nicholas Sykes is Headteacher atthe school and says it took 18 months to make the changes.

“We wanted locally produced food sourced within a 50mile radius of Leeds. We also wanted the food to be seasonal,”explains Mr Sykes. “The company providing our lunches now –Mellors – uses fresh food, freshly made bread and there’s an endless supply of fruit, salad and yoghurt for our children. We have three choices each day and the balance is better, the quality of the vegetables is fresher and it’s allcooked in a better way.”

But are pupils leaving their lunchboxes at home?Last year 130 children were eating school dinners hereat Chapel Allerton. That’s gone up to 200 since Mellorsbegan catering at the school and staff are expectingthe number to increase as the year goes on.

Emma Carr is a Year 3 pupil enjoying thenew dinners. “The food is delicious. I like the saladbest – carrots are my favourite!”

A newsletter with the week’s menu is senthome with pupils and parents are encouraged totalk to their children about healthy eating choices.Pupils then make their dinner decision at the beginning of the school day meaning the mealsare cooked to order. That, says Mr Sykes, meanschildren get the meal they want and there’sno waste.

“If the food looks good, the children have agood meal and a positive lunchtime experience.Chances are they’ll have better concentration inthe afternoon, and that’s good news for teachers.”

FORGET homemade soup, these vegetables are about to formpart of Jon’s new NamePhrame collection. This talented landscapephotographer has turned his hand to hunting down the letters of

the alphabet in the most unusual places and turning them into art. “It’s a matter of walking round and looking for the letters,”says Jon

who’s dad to one year old Isaac.“I’ve used strawberries, raspberries andbeans for this new theme. There’s a lot of letters in a bean plant!”

The idea was born shortly after Isaac. Jon wanted to create a pieceof original art for his son’s wall and so went in search of the letters whichmade up Isaac’s name at the beach. Since then he’s found the alphabetin playgrounds, on diggers and in every shade of pink. He’s also workingon several new themes including farmyards, fire engines, trains, sports, flowers and of course the garden.

“It’s a lifestyle choice for me to do this,”says Jon who shares thechildcare of Isaac with his wife.“I get to look after my son, to spend timewith him and also on a day I’m working, I can take him to the child minderwhen I’m ready.”

With Christmas around the corner, business is booming. Jon now has acatalogue of 450 names, which he’s constantly updating. The most recentaddition is Isambard after a request at a craft fair in Saltaire, but his mostpopular names are Oliver, Jack, Lily and Sophie. What about Florence –the name of David and Samantha Cameron’s newest arrival?

“I created a NamePhrame piece for Florence Rose Endellion Cameronin a Beach theme – because she was born in Cornwall,”says Jon. “I got athank you from 10 Downing Street but I’d love to know if it’s made it intothe nursery!”

The products appeal directly to children, tapping into the way a childlooks at the world.“Children can see the names straight away,”Jon explains.

“Parents often can’t see it immediately – it takes them a minute, but my work isn’t about the parents. It’s about the children.”

With 10 products in the NamePhrame range, and interest fromaround the country, the next few weeks are going to be busy. Jonhas added Christmas Cards to his range this year – the long, coldwinter gave him the opportunity to create a snow alphabet. How-ever, it’s the garden theme that’s caught my eye. At last I’ll know mygirls are getting their five a day – even if it is on their bedroom wall!

To look at Jon’s work go to www.namephrame.co.uk.To find out about becoming a NamePhrame Representativehere in Leeds, take a look at the NEWS pages.

The TRUTH

about TW NSIt seems natural to ask the parents of twinshow they cope. But as Sarah Butters foundout at Leeds’ newest support group, that’sthe last question mums want to hear.

When Hazel Ramsey was left on her own with her twin boys Charlie andWilliam last summer, she admits, she broke down in tears wonderinghow she’d cope. Her mum had gone, her husband was back at workand she was at home in Roundhay with twin baby boys and their 2 yearold brother. 17 months on and she’s sat with a group of mums, havinga cup of coffee in Little Bees soft play centre in Seacroft, telling FamiliesLeeds how great life is as the mum of twin boys.

“Some things I find much easier with twins – they always have eachother for company and when they’re feeding they encourage eachother,”says Hazel. “But for a time everything needed strategic planning. It took me 8 months to leave the house with all three of my boys!”

In search of support, Hazel launched the Leeds Twins and MultiplesGroup. The aim is to co-ordinate monthly meet ups and provide a constant supply of support through their Facebook page. These arewomen who have a unique bond and they’re able to share the highsand lows of being mum to multiple children.

Jo Halliday from Horsforth is one of those mums. Her 3 year oldtwins, Rudy and Trey are older members of the group and she says a positive attitude will go a long way to helping you cope.“When I foundout I was having twins I felt pure delight, whereas for some parents,it’s their worst nightmare,”says Jo. “I think children pick up on that.”

More twins are being born in the UK than ever before. Now, 1 inevery 34 babies is born a twin or triplet – that’s an increase from 1 inevery 52 back in the 1980s. Delyth Rafell is Director of Twins UK andmum to 7 year old twin girls. She says the early days are hard.

“Getting through your first year is incredibly difficult,”says Delyth.“Everything is a challenge. Getting out of the door is a challenge, sleeping is a challenge and we’ve found that sleep depravation is thenumber one issue for the parents of multiples. Having two or more babies at the same time is relentless.”

Take popping to the shop for instance – when you have a twin buggyin tow, your choice of shop is determined by the width of the doorframe.Consider signing up to a pre-school class – most of us find keeping onechild in check a challenge, but imagine having to restrain two. It canlead to parents putting off braving the outside world and becomingisolated and depressed. And it seems sometimes the comments of goodintentioned strangers aren’t always helpful.

“I can remember people saying ‘You’ve got your hands full’ and‘Are they all yours?’ as I walked around Roundhay,”says Hazel Ramsey.“When you’re trying to build up your confidence, what you really needaround you are people saying, ‘We CAN do it’ and that’s what thisgroup is about.”

The mums at Leeds Twins and Multiples are a mix of those who arenow enjoying the best bits of having twins, and those who need somesupport. Jo Halliday is clearly one of the mums enjoying her twins.

“I’d have another set tomorrow if I could,”says Jo. “They play together, sleep together and when they go to school next year they’llbe starting together. That’s a wonderful situation to be in.”

For Hazel, who is just emerging from that difficult first year, she’s beginning to enjoy it too. “There are ups and downs, but I knowas they grow there are a lot more ups than downs to come,” she says.“I couldn’t imagine having a single baby now. I’d just have so muchtime on my hands!”

Glue, glitter and green paint – it’s enoughto bring most mums out in a cold sweat. But not Hayley Sugden from The CreationStation – Leeds’ newest art and craft classes. This mum of two loves a mess and will eventidy up after your children have made it.

“Children love getting messy – putting paint on the floor and splashing in water,”says Hayley.“Sometimes it takes a while for themto get into making a mess because at home there are restrictions –but here they can go for it!”

Hayley runs sessions in Horsforth and Yeadon with plans for another in Guiseley in the near future. The idea is children learn to explore their imagination through art and craft. Every class beginswith a look inside a magic treasure chest. There’s no template tocopy, no set theme to follow, just loads of paint, sequins and smiles.

“We find if you give a child an example, they can feel likethey’ve not achieved,”explains Hayley from Rawdon.“At The CreationStation we want them to experiment with materials. Then they feelthey’ve achieved making something the way they want to.”

The sessions have been running since February and parentsat this Thursday morning session in Horsforth love the fact theyleave the mess behind. Today the children are painting the floorwith sponges, making bracelets from pipe cleaners and lollipoppeople with feathers, glitter and lots of glue.

Eileen is here with her grand-daughter, two year old Jessica.“She loses her inhibitions, gets messy and gets carried away. When she’s making something she’s so focused!”

For Megan’s mum Tina White, this is about spendingsome quality time together. “Mums can have a go too. This issomething we do together and I think that’s great.”

With the class over, everyone proudly shows Hayley theircreations. With aprons removed, the children wave goodbyeto the glitter and glue until next week. You can almost hearthe parents’ sighs of relief that the mess they’re leaving behindisn’t in their own homes!

The Creation Station runs sessions in Horsforth on aThursday and in Yeadon on a Friday. Watch out for sessions across Leeds in 2011. Arty Parties also available!www.thecreationstation.co.uk • 0845 303 9441
