    SYMBOLS

    Special coloured labels have been attachednear or actually on some of the compo-nents of your car. These labels bear sym-bols that remind you of the precautionsto be taken as regards that particular com-ponent.

    The plate summarising the symbols used

    can be found under the bonnet fig. 10.

    THE FIAT CODE SYSTEM

    This is an electrical engine locking systemwhich increases protection from at-tempted theft of the car. It is automaticallyactivated when the ignition key is ex-tracted.

    Each key contains an electronic devicewhich modulates the signal emitted dur-

    ing ignition by an antenna incorporated inthe ignition device. This signal is the pass-word which changes at each ignition andwhich the control unit uses to recognisethe key and enable ignition.

    INSTRUMENTS

    SPEEDOMETER Fig. 22

    Indicates the cars speed.

    REV. COUNTER Fig. 23

    This indicates the engine revolution perminute.

    IMPORTANT The electronic injectioncontrol system gradually shuts off the flowof fuel when the engine is over-revvingresulting in a gradual loss of engine pow-er.

    When the engine is idling, the rev countermay indicate a gradual or sudden increaseof the speed.

    This is normal and does not indicate afault. It may be caused, for example, by theoperation of the climate control systemor fan. In these case, a slow change in en-gine speed is used to protect the batterycharge.

    AUTOMATIC TWO-ZONE CLIMATECONTROL SYSTEM(where provided)

    GENERAL INFORMATION

    The two-zone automatic climate control

    system distributes air in the passengercompartment in two zones: drivers andpassengers side. Temperature is con-trolled on the basis of an equivalent tem-perature principle; in other words, thesystem continuously works to keep thecomfort level inside the car constant andto compensate for possible variations ofexternal conditions, including sun radia-tion detected by a specific sensor.

    The automatically controlled parametersand functions are:

    air temperature at the vents on dri-ver/front passenger side;

    air at vents on driver/front passengerside;

    fan speed (continuous air flow varia-tion);

    compressor activation (to cool/dehu-midify air);

    air recirculation.

    All functions may be manually changed. Inorder words, you may select one or morefunctions and change the parameters asrequired. Automatic control of the man-ually changed functions will be suspended:the system will change override your set-tings only for safety-related reasons (e.g.risk of misting up).

    Manual selections will always have higher

    priority over automatic settings and willbe stored until the user switches the sys-tem back to automatic mode, except forthe cases in which the system will inter-vene for particular, safety-related reasons.

    You can adjust one function automatical-ly and have the automatic system controlall the others.

    The amount of air introduced into the pas-senger compartment is independent fromspeed of the car because the fan is con-trolled by the electronic system.

    The temperature of the air taken in is al-

    ways controlled automatically dependingon the temperature set on the display (ex-cept when the system is turned off or un-der certain conditions when the com-pressor is off.

    The following parameters and functionscan be manually set:

    air temperature on driver/front pas-senger side;

    fan speed (continuous variation);

    air distribution to five positions (dri-ver/front passenger side);

    compressor enablement;

    one-zone/two-zone distribution pri-ority;

    fast demist/defrost function;

    air recirculation;

    heated rear window;

    system off.

    USING THE CLIMATECONTROL SYSTEM

    The system can be started in differentways, but it is advisable to press one of theAUTO buttons and then to turn theknobs to set the temperatures requiredon the display.

    The system manages two passenger com-partment zones: the driver and passen-ger can therefore select different tem-peratures. The maximum difference be-tween the two zones is 7C.

    The system will start running automaticallyin this way and the set comfortable tem-perature will be reached as quickly as pos-sible. The system will adjust the tempera-ture, the quantity and the distribution ofthe air introduced into the passenger com-partment and will manage the recirculationfunction and the compressor.

    Manual intervention is only required forthe following functions during fully auto-matic operation.

    MONO to uniform the temperatureand the air distribution on front pas-senger or rear passenger zones to thedrivers zone;

    air recirculation, to keep it alwayson or off;

    - to speed up demisting/defrosting ofwindscreen, side windows, rear windowand door mirrors;

    ( to demist/defrost the heated rearwindow and the external rearviewmirrors.

    During completely automatic system op-eration, you can vary the set temperature,the air distribution and the fan speed us-ing the corresponding buttons or knobsat any time: the system will automaticallychange settings to adapt to the new re-quest.

    During fully automatic operation (FULLAUTO), the word FULL will dissapearif the air distribution, air speed, compres-sor and/or recirculation settings arechanged. In this way, the functions willswitch from automatic to manual control

    until AUTO is pressed again. The fanspeed is the same in all the zones of thepassenger compartment.

    With on or more manually set functions,the introduced air temperature is stillmanaged automatically by the system, ex-cept for when the compressor is off: in thecase, the air introduced into the passen-ger compartment cannot be cooler than

    the outside air.

    H-N airtemperature settingknobs

    Turn the knobs clock-wise or anticlockwise toturn the temperature upor down in the front leftzone (knob N) and theright zone (knob H) ofthe passenger compart-

    ment respectively.The system manages two passenger com-partment zones: the driver and passen-ger can therefore select different tem-peratures. The maximum difference be-tween the two zones is 7C.

    The set temperature is shown on the dis-play near the knobs.

    Press A (MONO) to automatically alignthe temperature in the front passengerzone to the drivers side temperature. Thesame temperature can be set in bothzones by turning knob N on drivers side.

    This function is used to adjust the tem-perature in the passenger compartmentwhen the driver only is in the car.

    To go back to separate air and tempera-

    ture distribution in the two zones of thepassenger compartment, simply turn theknobs H or press (A-MONO) when theLED on the button is on.

    Turn the knobs either all to the right orall to the left to the extreme HI or LOpositions to use the maximum heating ormaximum cooling functions:

    HI function (maximum heating):

    select by turning the temperature knobclockwise over the maximum value(32 C). It can be operated from eitherby the driver or by the front passenger

    (by selecting the MONO function).

    This function may be used to cool downthe passenger compartment as fast aspossible and exploit the system potentialto the maximum. The function uses the

    Specifically, if the heating fluid is notwarm enough, the fan will not start up atthe maximum speed immediately to limitintroducing excessively cool air into thepassenger compartment.

    All manual settings will be allowed when

    this function is on.

    To switch the function off, simply turnthe temperature knob anticlockwise andset the required temperature.

    LO function (maximum cooling):

    select by turning the temperature knobanticlockwise beyond the minimumvalue (16 C). It can be operated fromeither by the driver or by the front pas-senger (by selecting the MONO func-tion).

    This function may be used to cool down

    the passenger compartment as fast aspossible and exploit the system potentialto the maximum. The function activatesair recirculation and the climate controlcompressor, air distribution and fanspeed are managed by the systemaccording to environmental conditions.

    All manual settings will be allowed whenthis function is on.

    To switch the function off, simply turnthe temperature knob clockwise and setthe required temperature.

    Air distributionbuttons(I-M)

    Press these buttons tomanually set one of thefive possible air distribu-tion patterns on the leftand on the right side ofthe passenger compart-ment:

    air flow to the windscreen and frontside window vents to demist or de-frost them;

    air flow at central and side dash-

    board vents to ventilate the chestand the face during the hot season;

    air flow to the front and rear footwell vents. Thanks to the natural ten-dency of hot air to spread upwards,this distribution pattern allows towarm the passenger compartmentup as quickly as possible, providingan immediate feeling of warmth.

    Air flow between foot well vents(hotter air) and central and sidedashboard vents (cooler air). Thisdistribution mode is particularly use-ful in spring and autumn on a sunnyday.

    Air flow distributed between footwell vents and windscreen and frontside window defrosting/demisting

    vents. This allows an adequatewarming of the passenger compart-ment and prevents the windowsfrom misting up.

    The set distribution is shown by the cor-responding LEDs on the selected buttons.

    When the combined function is on, pressa button to activate the correspondingfunctions along with the settings. If thebutton corresponding to a previously ac-tive button is pressed, the function isturned off and the corresponding LED willgo out.

    To restore automatic air distribution con-

    trol after a manual adjustment, press but-ton AUTO.

    Air distribution is automatically aligned ondriver and passenger side when the driverselects air distribution towards the wind-screen. The passenger can select a differ-ent distribution by pressing the corre-sponding buttons afterwards.
