The 30th anniversary of Radio 4’s Top 10 Music Headlines was voted as one of the Top 10 Music Headlines 2015. This sounds funny and somewhat confusing to me at first that the organiser of the event has been brought into the limelight. In fact, once we knew that the headline was shortlisted, we tried to keep it low profile, neither mentioning on air nor in FM about this annual poll’s 30th anniversary. Yet, as it turned out, those who took part in the nomination and voting indeed feel that the event deserves some attention.

We are indebted to all who have participated in ‘Top 10’. In fact, I am humbled to say that ‘Top 10 Music Headlines’ doesn’t just belong to Radio 4. It’s true that we have started organising the event since 1986. But, what we have done over the past three decades was simply to serve the music community by creating a platform for everyone to express their views on the music happenings in a particular year. During the voting process, all who participate in the poll have undoubtedly gathered a momentum to help increase the awareness of fine music in Hong Kong. At the same time, they have also taken part in outlining Hong Kong’s music history in the past 30 years. Simply browsing through the 300 winning arts news from 1986 to 2015, one would be amazed by how Hong Kong has developed musically. If the 30th anniversary of ‘Top 10 Music Headlines’ should be considered an honour, I am fully convinced that the honour should belong to everyone who has taken part in creating music, staging and watching performances in the past. Together, we have helped to shape a robust musical scene.

The ‘Top 10 Music Headlines 2015 Announcement Ceremony’ and the ‘Top 10 Music Headlines’ 30th Anniversary Reception’ were held on 29 January. This special occasion was attended by many guests from the music circle. Flashback of the event is on page 4. Another annual event worth noticing is our coverage of the Schools Music Festival. For the third year, on top of the Choir Finals and Winners’ Concerts, we invite you to listen to the RTHK Radio 4 Chinese Instruments Scholarship Final. You can even be an audience member at Studio One to enjoy the sparkling performances of Hong Kong’s outstanding young Chinese instrumentalists. Just fill out ticket request form on page 15.

Finally, a word about Granados. On 24 March 1916, Granados died tragically in the sea while trying to rescue his wife after their ship was torpedoed by a German submarine. This month, we remember the great Spanish pianist and composer with a special programme series hosted by Juan José Morales, a fervent lover of Spanish music.

For your information, next month we will draw our attention to another Hispanic composer Ginastera for the 100th anniversary of his birth. A special series will be hosted by Rebecca Siu who is one of our veteran presenters. If you want to know Rebecca a little more, please turn to this month’s Coda.

「十大樂聞三十週年」被選為其中一則2015年十大音樂新聞。主辦者竟然成為主角之一，令人難以置信。其實，當知道這則樂聞出現在候選之列時，我們已刻意低調處理，在節目及《美樂集》盡少提及這個年度票選活動三十週年。不過，這則樂聞最終能躋身十大，也反映出在提名人及投票者心目中，這活動具有特別意義。

多謝大家對「十大樂聞」的支持。自1986年第四台主辦「十大樂聞」至今，這不單是屬於第四台的活動。我們只是提供一個平台，讓大眾表達對該年的主要音樂大事的意見。在過程中，參與「十大樂聞」的朋友結集了一股動力，使美樂更受關注，同時也為香港每年保留一份音樂歷史檔案。如果「十大樂聞三十週年」獲選是一項榮譽的話，我很想說，這榮譽該屬於所有音樂創作人、推動者和觀眾。大家對音樂的熱誠，使香港的音樂文化在過去三十年出現了繁盛的面貌。

本月，我們會紀念作曲家兼鋼琴家葛拉納多斯逝世百週年。1916年3月24日，他和太太所乘坐的船隻被德國潛艇發射的魚雷擊中。他為救在水中掙扎的太太，結果一同葬身大海。孟綸豪熱愛葛拉納多斯的作品，逢星期日早上10時，他會以英語為你主持一連四集的特輯。

順帶一提，下月是另一位著名作曲家希納斯特拿的百歲誕辰紀念，蕭程佳明將會送上另一個特輯。想先認識一下我們這位資深主持人，請翻閱Coda。

Several representatives from top music headlines from the past 29 years were present at the event. They included:

Top 10 Music Headlines is an annual project initiated by RTHK Radio 4.

This year marks the 30th anniversary of the event. An announcement

ceremony was held on 29 January, when results of last year’s top 10

news were revealed. We also invited musicians, arts administrators

and music lovers to attend this special occasion. Let’s revisit the event

through these pictures.

「十大樂聞齊齊選2015結果揭曉及頒獎禮」已於1月29日順

利舉行。不經不覺，由第四台主辦的這個活動已籌辦至第三

Anita自浸會大學音樂系畢業後，投身本地藝術行政工

作，曾在唱片公司、香港藝術節和文化機構任職。她自

言上台表演時常緊張至冒汗，做不來演奏家，索性退居

幕後，向大眾推廣音樂。

因此，她一直將學校音樂節當成她夢想的工作。讀書的

時候，她是參賽者，既上台演奏鋼琴，也參與英語朗誦

賽事。過去的十一年，她統籌和協調這些賽事，眼見這

項全港最大型的校際音樂比賽續年成長；眼見當年喜歡

音樂的小孩子漸漸長大，要麼成為職業演奏家，要麼自

組樂團，延續音樂夢想。

「我一直希望學校音樂節能成為他們童年和少年時代的

美好回憶。」Anita辦公室的一面牆上，貼滿了與音樂

節有關的相片。相中的參賽者，不論獨奏，抑或參與小

型樂團或合唱團，樣子都是開開心心的。

既是音樂節，必然要有熱鬧和愉悅的氛圍。對於部份家

長苛刻，要求參賽學生取得好成績的做法，Anita不以

為然。在她看來，比賽固然有分數、有名次，卻並不止

於此。如何透過比賽拉近演奏者與音樂之間以及演奏者

之間的距離，才是這項比賽最具價值與活力之處。

「我們看重的並不是上台演奏的那幾分鐘，而是參賽的

整個過程。」Anita告訴我，學生從報名參賽、收到演

奏曲目名錄，直到上台表演，前後大概有八個月的時

間。在這八個月裡，參賽者要了解樂曲風格，研究作曲

意涵，與拍檔排練，還要適應比賽的緊張氣氛。這於那

些喜歡音樂的年輕人而言，實是再珍貴不過的經歷。

韋淑妍：我與香港學校音樂節相伴的日子箬笠

我與韋淑妍(Anita Wai)在她位於何文田迦密村的辦公室見面時，

她正忙於處理3月舉辦的香港學校音樂節的眾多文件。

今年，是她任職音樂節行政秘書的第十一年，也是最後一年。

「其實我不捨得走……」Anita告訴我，

但父母年事已高，遠在多倫多，需要她照顧。

之前，她一直忙於工作；如今，是時候回歸家庭了。

參賽者和家人固然能夠享受比賽，而身為賽事

統籌的Anita，則遠沒有那樣輕鬆。從邀約本地

資深音樂人篩選比賽曲目，到邀請世界各地專

業評審來港，至召集十數萬名學生參賽，這前

前後後準備過程之複雜繁瑣，遠遠超出Anita最

初的想象。

她記得有一年，當比賽進入最後一週，她終於

可以稍微鬆一口氣的時候，一場大規模的流感

爆發，學校宣佈停課。教育局的指令在某天晚

上發出，Anita不得不召集同事連夜趕工，重新

安排餘下日子的賽程。還有一次，某位英國來

港的評審在音樂節期間因急病離世，Anita和同

事不得不一面維持賽事如期舉行，一面安慰逝

世者家人，並做好善後工作。

「對於我們這些藝術行政人員而言，細心和耐

心是很重要的。」在Anita看來，她的工作像是

聯繫音樂家與公眾的紐帶。藉著這項賽事，國

際評審對香港的音樂教育有更深了解，家長和

學生也能從觀賽過程中獲得不少啟發。

Anita也不斷從比賽過程中汲取「新鮮」元素。

她透過與評審溝通，了解國際同類賽事的發

展；而她與參賽者和家人的交流，也足以令這

項賽事的舉辦過程越發順暢。Anita樂意將自己

看作一名「探索者」，在音樂路上走走看看，

永遠保存著好奇和期待。

Anita Wai has been working as the Administrative Secretary of Hong Kong Schools Music and Speech Association for more than a decade.

As one of the organisers of Hong Kong Schools Music Festival, she has, in the past 11 years,

dedicated her time and efforts to the development of the Festival and helped the Festival

become one of the most significant and energetic music activities in Hong Kong.

Managing such a large-scaled music festival needs patience, persistence, and courage. Anita

and her colleagues have to communicate with various parties, face unimaginable challenges,

and make every segment work smoothly and efficiently. Even with this high pressure, Anita

enjoys her job very much. For her, building up the connection between music and individuals

is the most valuable part of the Festival.

She hopes competitors and their family members will also enjoy the process of being in the

Festival. To find out one’s strengths and weaknesses is much more crucial than to get a high

score.

Anita views herself as an explorer. On the way to pursue her goals in music education, she

always attempts to learn from professionals and to share her thoughts with the public. She

never tires of looking for fresh and inspiring views in the world of music.

RTHK Radio 4 Chinese Instruments Scholarship is one of the

highlights of this year’s Schools Music Festival. This competition is

presented by the Hong Kong Schools Music and Speech Association,

with full support from RTHK Radio 4. Last year, five finalists came to

RTHK Studio One to perform in front of the Chinese music experts and

the audience. It was a very good experience for these young music

talents to learn from each other. Pipa player Au Chin-ching was awarded

First Prize. He also received an RTHK trophy and a scholarship prize.

This year, the competition will take place on the afternoon of 11 March

(Friday) at RTHK Studio One, Broadcasting House. We look forward to

seeing you there.

「香港電台第四台中國樂器獎學金」由香港學校音樂及朗誦協會主

辦，香港電台第四台全力支持。今年的比賽於3月11日(星期五)下午

在香港電台一號錄播室舉行。去年的賽事吸引了不少年輕優秀中樂好

It had been six months since Andris Nelson departed the Birmingham Symphony Orchestra (CBSO), and the Orchestra has finally announced Nelson’s successor – 29-year-old Mirga Gražinytė-Tyla in early February. The decision was made unanimously by a committee made up of CBSO musicians, board members, and management. Her appointment is effective from September 2016, for an initial three-year period.

CBSO’s Chief Executive Stephen Maddock said that there was ‘an instant chemistry’ between Gražinytė-Tyla and the musicians, and the excitement in Symphony Hall at her concerts both on stage and in the audience was palpable. During interviews with the Guardian, the Orchestra’s Principal Second Violin Moritz Pfister also reported that she has a ‘clear idea of what she wants’, and she has a ‘very natural authority – from the minute she came on stage she was convincing.’

Born to a musical family in Vilnius, Lithuania, Gražinytė-Tyla studied in Leipzig, Bologna, Zurich, and Graz. She is the 2012 winner of the prestigious Nestlé and Salzburg Festival Young Conductors Award, and subsequently, she made her debut with the Mahler Chamber Orchestra in a symphonic concert at the Salzburger Festspiele. She was a Dudamel Fellow with the Los Angeles Philharmonic in 2012 - 2013 season and is the current Associate Conductor of the Los Angeles Philharmonic.

The CBSO has began a custom of hiring young Music Directors since the Simon Rattle era, who was then 25, followed by Sakari Oramo who was 33 and Andris Nelson who was 30; their careers and reputations blossomed during their time in the city.

The self-taught 12-year-old jazz pianist from Indonesia, Josiah Alexander Sila, better known as ‘Joey Alexander’, became the youngest performer ever to be nominated for 2 Grammys at the Grammy Awards 2016, where his live performance brought the audience to a standing ovation.

Born in Bali’s Denpasar City, Joey was immersed in jazz through his father’s personal jazz collection at a young age. He considers Harry Connick, Jr., and Herbie Hancock among his main musical influences, and also admires Clifford Brown and Miles Davis. Despite not having formal jazz classes in Bali, Joey, at the age of 6, taught himself at the electronic keyboard, and also by taking part in jazz sessions with more experienced performers. Seeing their son’s talent as a ‘gift from God’, the parents decided to make the move to the Indonesian capital Jakarta — home to one of the world’s largest jazz festivals.

Joey’s popularity really sparked in 2014, when the renowned jazz trumpeter Wynton Marsalis discovered his performance in a YouTube video. Praising the young pianist on Facebook, he then invited him to New York to play at the Jazz at Lincoln Center’s gala. Since then, he went on to make his US debut, performing at several Jazz festivals, and also won music competitions before his family moved to New York in 2014.

Joey’s debut album titled, ‘My Favourite Things’, came out last May; he is also the first Indonesian act to crack the US Billboard album charts, debuting at number 174.

master of Italian verismo, an American contemporary setting of a late Shakespearean play, and a powerful Czech psychological drama involving

infanticide.

6 March : Handel’s Semele

Following modest early successes in Germany and Italy, George Frideric Handel (1685 - 1759) settled in London in 1712. There, he devoted the rest of his life to the development of his art, which came to represent not only a unique synthesis of German instrumental and Italian operatic composition but also an entire era of music in England.

Handel started to work on Semele in June 1743 and completed the score in just one month. This shows his extraordinary speed and spontaneity at composition, although Messiah, one of the world’s greatest oratorios, only took him three weeks in 1741.

William Congreave’s libretto, originally written for an earlier composer, was based on a mythological legend retold in Ovid’s Metamorphoses. The text set by Handel was a revised version by the poet Alexander Pope. The story tells of Jupiter’s love for Semele, the beautiful daughter of King Cadmus of Thebes, and her desire to acquire immortality and divine status by manipulating her intimate relationship with the king of the gods. This she fails to achieve and at her death, Semele is transformed into a phoenix, to be the joy of this earth and the delight of the skies. Handel managed to introduce into the opera some ingenious touches of subtle humour.

Semele has been highly praised by musicians and critics. Lord Harewood, Former Director of the Royal Opera at Covent Garden, described the opera in these words: ‘The music is so full of variety, the recitative so expressive, the orchestration so inventive, the characterisation so apt, the action so full of credible situation and incident’ that the opera deserves to be rated among the best of Handel’s works created for the stage.

A fine recording will be played for your enjoyment, featuring soprano Kathleen Battle in the title role as Semele, tenor John Aler as Jupiter, countertenor Michael Chance as Semele’s betrothed Athamas, mezzo-soprano Marilyn Horne in a double role as Semele’s sister Ino and the goddess Juno, and bass Samuel Ramey as King Cadmus and the God of Sleep Somnus. This fabulous cast of singers is supported by the English Chamber Orchestra and the Ambrosian Opera Chorus conducted by John Nelson.

13 March : Mascagni’s Amica

Pietro Mascagni (1863 - 1945) was 27 years old when his one-act opera Cavalleria Rusticana (Rustic Chivalry) won the first prize in the Sanzogno Competition. The work’s premiere in Rome in 1890 was a sensational success. It brought the composer instant international fame and marked the beginning of a new movement known as verismo (realism) in Italian opera.

The verismo style emphasises depiction of the everyday life of the common people, their fiery passions and violent actions. It exerted a strong influence on the generation of composers active in the decades around the turn of the 20th century. Mascagni himself, however, did not consistently follow this trend which he had inaugurated. He deliberately avoided being identified with any stylistic label and was constantly trying out different musical expressions for a wide variety of subjects. Of the 15 operas he had completed in his career, only 4 or 5 fall into the verismo category and Amica, his ninth composition for the stage, is one of them.

Amica was originally set to a French libretto by the well-known Parisian music publisher Paul de Chouden who commissioned the work. It was an immediate success on its opening night in Monte-Carlo in March 1905. Its Italian version, presented in Rome two months later, was also successful, but unfortunately the work could not sustain an enduring popularity and, like many of Mascagni’s works apart from his first opera, it soon fell into obscurity. Recent revivals in several Italian productions have revealed Amica’s notable merits, especially Mascagni’s superb craftsmanship in orchestration, musical characterisation, and the use of free melodic declamation.

Amica is the attractive niece of a wealthy farmer who arranges for her to be married, against her will, to Giorgio, one of his adopted sons. She is secretly in love with Giorgio’s brother Rinaldo, who, without knowing the identity of the man to whom Amica is being forced to marry, persuades her to elope with him for an idyllic life in the mountains. Giorgio tracks the couple and confronts them at a dangerous ravine near a waterfall. On realising that his rival for Amica’s affection is his own brother, Rinaldo decides to sacrifice his own love and climbs the heights alone. Amica tries to follow him but falls to her death in the rapids below.

A studio recording of the Italian version will be presented, with soprano Katia Ricciarelli in the role of Amica, tenor Fabio Armilliato as Giorgio, and baritone Walter Donati as Rinaldo, performing with the Hungarian Radio and Television Symphony Orchestra and Chorus conducted by Marco Pace.

20 March : Hoiby’s The Tempest

Lee Hoiby (1926 - 2011), the celebrated contemporary American composer of operas and songs, belonged to the late-20th-century avant-garde, but his works courageously champion romantic lyricism at a time when such compositions were deemed old fashioned. He was proud to be a conservative creative artist and successfully combined his tonal approach with modern progressive techniques to produce highly accessible and attractive music.

Born in Wisconsin, Hoiby was a child prodigy who began playing the piano at the age of five. After graduating from the University of Wisconsin, he became a pupil of the important French composer Darius Milhaud at Mills College. He later entered the Curtis Institute of Music in Philadelphia, where he was mentored in composition by Gian Carlo Menotti who stimulated his interest in opera. Hoiby eventually changed his career focus from being a concert pianist to becoming an outstanding composer of operas, songs, and chamber music.

Hoiby’s operatic setting of Shakespeare’s The Tempest had its world premiere at De Moines Metro Opera of Iowa in 1986. It has since undergone two revisions. The second version opened at Dallas Opera in 1996. The third and final version was staged at the Performing Arts Center at the State University of New York at Purchase in 2008, where a live recording was made, which is being presented for your enjoyment in this programme.

On a remote island, the sorcerer Prospero, the exiled Duke of Milan, plots to restore his daughter Miranda to her rightful place using illusion and magic. He conjures up a tempest to lure his usurping brother Antonio and the complicit King Alonso of Naples to the island. There, his magic exposes Antonio’s base nature and brings about the marriage of Miranda to Alonso’s son, Ferdinand.

Robert Balonek, bass baritone, interprets the role of Prospero; Catherine Webber, soprano, sings Miranda; and Anthony Caputo, lyric baritone, is Ferdinand. The Purchase College Opera Chorus and Symphony Orchestra perform under the baton of Hugh Murphy.

27 March : Janáček’s Jenůfa

Leos Janáček (1854 - 1928) is recognised as one of the most original creative geniuses, a seminal figure of modern music, occupying a unique position among 20th-century composers. His musical style was formed out of a highly characteristic assimilation of the elements of national folksong and its associated rhythms, the inflexions of his native language, and sounds of nature.

International renown eluded him until he was over 60, with the sensational reception of Jenůfa at the Prague National Theatre in 1916 and at the Vienna State Opera two years later. This is a moving music drama depicting strong emotions and deep psychological stresses of the characters in a hostile rural environment.

The story evolves around the tense relationship between Jenůfa and her step-mother whose anxiety for the younger woman’s future happiness drives her to commit infanticide by smothering her unmarried daughter’s new-born baby.

An authoritative recording will be played, with sopranos Libuše Domanínská in the title role and Naděžda Kniplová in the role of the step-mother. They are supported by a large cast of Czech and Slovak soloists together with the Chorus and Orchestra of the National Theatre of Prague conducted by Bohumil Gregor.

Juan José Morales

Enrique Granados (1867 - 1916) is one of the best-loved Spanish composers

and one of the greatest representatives of Spanish nationalist music together

with other luminaries such as Isaac Albéniz, Joaquín Turina, and Manuel de

Falla. To commemorate the centenary of Granados’ death this month, Radio 4

will present a series of programmes highlighting different aspects of Granados’

music that should be remembered or - better known.

A Gift of Spanish MusicSundays 10:00am

Our first programme, Poet of the Piano, will introduce

Granados’ relevance to this instrument, for Granados was

preeminently a composer for the piano, and he himself was

a piano virtuoso with a flair for improvisation. The selection

of pieces will underscore the lyrical vein which was his

hallmark. The piano suite Danzas Españolas, Granados’

first success, granted him worldwide recognition. It is a

personal interpretation of timeless folkloric traditions that

will be explored in the second programme. We will also

listen to guitar transcriptions and concert arrangements of

some pieces. In the third programme, Granados Unknown

will call attention to a substantial part of the composer’s

repertoire that remains little known and pieces that are rarely

performed; we will also unveil recent world premieres and

versions of beautiful pieces that have received nominations

and awards. Finally, Goyescas was Granados’ last major

cycle and masterpiece, going back to the Spanish popular

musical tradition through the images of one of Spain’s most

brilliant artists, the painter Goya. This piano suite is entirely

different in character to Granados’ former works, and led to

many unforgettable renditions in the piano and also the guitar.

Granados is an exponent of the Spanish cultural renaissance

at the turn of the 19th-century, a period of introspection and

awareness of a former splendour forever lost, but which

looked forward as part of the larger European tradition.

Our programmes will explain Granados’ biography in an

historical and cultural context, with an emphasis on the

revival of Goya who had left a mark in the people’s psyche

and in intellectuals’ outlooks.

From a strictly musical perspective, Granados is heir to

D. Scarlatti, the Italian composer who made Spain his

home and who first explored the essence of the Spanish

musical heritage. Closer to Granados’ time, his mentor,

Felipe Pedrell, who introduced Wagner in Spain, but who

also recorded Spanish popular songs, is really the father of

the modern Spanish nationalist movement, around whom

Granados and all others would flourish. At the same time,

Granados is bound up with European Romanticism, as a

follower of Chopin, Schumann, and Liszt, whose influences

are noticeable, and a declared admirer of Beethoven and

Wagner. So much of Granados’ output belongs to this

tradition but however is little known.

This celebration of Granados and his music will be an occasion

to remember Granados’ main interpreters, first and foremost the

pianist Alicia de Larrocha, whose teacher, Frank Marshall, was a

direct disciple of Granados, as were Alicia’s mother and aunt. Arthur

Rubinstein, who played ‘like a born Spaniard’, as his friends liked

to compliment him and he was proud to recall, comes second for

the brio and warm temperament he infused into his performances

of Spanish piano music. And there are few other performers, most

recently, pianists Douglas Riva and Martin Jones who have recorded

virtually all of Granados’ integral repertoire. Well before, in Hong Kong,

Shirley Ip played Valses Sentimentales, rarely performed until then,

in the first programme of Radio 4’s Music Beyond Borders. Some

historic performances will hold a place of honour, like the orchestral

arrangement of Danza No. 5, Andaluza, performed by the London

Symphony Orchestra under the baton of Ataúlfo Argenta. While at the

guitar, we will remember the great Andrés Segovia and Julian Bream.

Granados was a devoted piano teacher, and many of his compositions

were written with his students in mind. Piano students would do well

in listening to Granados and start practicing his pieces. But this is

a programme devised for a wide audience, to raise their curiosity

and open the door to enjoy Granados’ music on their own. Against

stereotypes which sometimes fell on Spanish culture and traditions,

Granados argued, ‘The music of my nation is far more complex, more

poetic and subtle’. We hope this series of programmes in homage

to the great composer will be a chance to discover his music in full.

I was recently involved in recording some episodes of a successful

television series that is a singing competition (I was not competing!),

when I was struck by something: for a ‘pop’ music show, there were

quite a few instruments involved in the music that would not be part

of a typical ‘pop’ band.

In addition to Western Classical instruments such as a solo oboe;

there was a six-sided type of box drum called the cajón which is most

frequently heard in Afro-Peruvian music. These instruments might be

relatively common in and of themselves, but certainly not in this über-

popular music context. But those instruments were just the beginning!

Meeting Instruments of the World

In the course of recording two episodes of this TV show, I made

special note of a whole host of wonderful instruments. There were

dutars from Xinjiang, a small-bodied guitar that looks something

like a lute and traces its lineage back to Persia. This seemed

related to the rawap, which had 7 strings and was spectacularly

adorned with snakeskin and goats horns! Vying for the prize of

most decorative instrument was the morin khuur, which, I was

to learn, is the national instrument of Mongolia. It, like the dutar,

has 2 strings, but it is played with a bow instead. The scroll of

the instrument is traditionally carved into a horse-head shape,

the strings of the bow are made from the tail of a horse and the

instrument strings are made from the tough bits of a mountain

goat. There were, naturally, a whole pile of interesting percussion

instruments and, in the space of just two songs, three different

bagpipers!

When World Music is the Real Music

I think this trend is exciting and encouraging. Looking

at all this variety got me to thinking about the way that

music has, in just the past decade, broken down so many

of the classifications and artificial barriers and labels that

we have assigned. Of course musical distinctions and

traditions are important and will continue to be practiced

and treated with respect, but part of me thinks that,

simply as ‘Music’. There are so many

wonderful sounds out there and it

is great to discover ways in which

these sounds can be combined.

Discovery from East to West

It is precisely this process of discovery that I mean to travel through

in the Songs of the Earth programme.

I will, for part of the series, be highlighting traditional music from

many and varied regions of the globe. For example, in a single

episode we will musically travel from Paco Peña’s Spain to the Celtic

sounds of the group Fiddle Sticks, and then alight on the captivating

Cape Verde Islands with Cesária Évora.

I will also be looking at different ways in which folk or traditional music

from different cultures has been increasingly used in more popular

formats and in cross-genre applications such as in film scores. One

of the greatest projects in this general area must surely be the Silk

Road Ensemble, spearheaded by one of the most forward thinking

classical musicians of our time, Yo-Yo Ma. He has seen his brain-

child go from strength to strength and grow to encompass music

from all over the globe in marvellous and heretofore unimagined

ways. I will be looking at some of their highlights recorded over the

years, including some of my personal favourites featuring the talents

of the sublime pipa virtuoso, Wu Man.

in the Proms almost a decade ago, the

Orchestra returns with Brahms’ Academic

Festival Overture and his intensely dramatic

Symphony No. 1. Jörg Widmann’s concerto

Flûte en suite, with Principal Flautist Joshua

Smith, is built around dance forms. The work,

written for him, was inspired by the exciting

dark timbre of his playing. Cleveland’s Music

Director Franz Welser-Möst conducts.

克里夫蘭樂團

幾近十年未有出席逍遙音樂節的克里夫蘭樂團載譽回歸，由音樂總監費爾沙—梅斯特帶領，演奏布拉姆斯的〈大學節慶序曲〉和極具戲劇張力的第一交響曲。德國作曲家韋特文的長笛組曲，是克里夫蘭樂團的委約作品，以舞曲曲式為主。韋特文深受長笛首席祖書亞‧史密夫演奏的深沉音色啟發，特別為他譜寫樂曲。英國《電訊報》形容這場演出：「克里夫蘭樂團奏出的和弦，像摩天大樓般奪目耀眼。」

BBC Proms — Leipzig Gewandhaus OrchestraJoined by mezzo-soprano Gerhild Romberger, the Leipzig Opera and

Gewandhaus Choir, and the Leipzig Gewandhaus Children’s Choir, Alan

Gilbert directs the Leipzig Gewandhaus Orchestra in Mahler’s unconventional

and longest work, his Symphony No. 3. The work contains six movements,

respectively portraying nature (movements 1-3), man, angels, and love.

The finale is a majestic culmination of the colossal structure that made the

legendary Bruno Walter wonder: ‘What language can utter heavenly love

more powerfully and forcefully than music itself?’

英國廣播公司逍遙音樂節 — 萊比錫布業大廈樂團

馬勒的第三交響曲是他筆下最長的交響巨著，不尋常的六樂章結構逐一刻劃大自然、人類、天使和愛。終樂章把全曲匯聚，莊嚴動人的尾聲甚至令德國傳奇指揮家華爾特驚嘆：「還有甚麼語言，比音樂更能如此有力地訴說天地的愛嗎？」基爾拔指揮的萊比錫布業大廈樂團，聯同女中音盧芭格、萊比錫歌劇院和萊比錫布業大廈合唱團及兒童合唱團，合力送上馬勒這首宏大之作。

Symphony, based on material from the composer’s daring opera

premiere of a new work by the young Canadian composer Zosha

Di Castri, Lineage, exploring the idea of what is passed down.

布朗夫曼與三藩市交響樂團

樂壇首屈一指的鋼琴家布朗夫曼，聯同狄遜‧湯馬士領導的三藩市交響樂團，演奏俄羅斯浪漫派音樂代表作 — 柴可夫斯基的第一鋼琴協奏曲。浦羅歌菲夫暴烈的第三交響曲，乃根據他大膽創作的歌劇《火之天使》寫成，散發着一種來自別的世界的黑暗氣氛。此外，音樂會亦帶來年青加拿大作曲家卡絲迪的新作〈傳承〉，靈感來自她童年時聽祖父母講故事，這首作品首次在美國西岸演出。

BBC Proms — Berlin Philharmonic OrchestraRhythmic influences of Stravinsky and Prokofiev can be seen in Rachmaninov’s last completed work, the Symphonic

Dances, where the composer mixes in waltz and plainchant. Stravinsky’s The Firebird Suite marks the starting point

of his important collaboration with Ballets Russes that resulted in many more major ballet scores of the century. Enjoy

an evening of dance-inspired Russian music performed by Simon Rattle and the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra.

我和豎琴有個約會 Rebecca Siu 蕭程佳明

Three years ago, I decided to learn

an instrument, I picked the harp. I was

attracted by the soothing and peaceful

nature of its sound. To facilitate my practice,

I got a 40-string lever harp at home. When

my friends came to know that I was learning

a new instrument, they kept asking:

‘Isn’t it only children who learn musical

instruments?’ When they realised that I was

serious, they started to encourage me! On

special days, I often received gifts related to

the harp, such as harp bookmarks, mugs

with harp decorations, a 3-D harp puzzle,

mini harp Christmas tree decoration, as

well as some harp music CDs. I even have

a 7-pound 26-string small harp, so I can

bring it along with me and participate in

public events for social services.

I also spent more time listening to harp

music. One day, I was listening to the Harp

Concerto, Op. 25, by Alberto Ginastera

(1916 - 1983), a famous 20th century

Argentine composer. I found myself being

exposed to the highly animated, vibrant,

and rhythmic side of the harp! In this

traditional concerto, Ginastera was very

skilful in his use of the harp and has woven

into it the unique flavour of Latin America.

Once the Concerto has aroused my interest,

my curiosity drove me to try out the harp

score using my lever harp. Oops! ... it did

not work... this Concerto was written for

pedal harp! May be, I should start looking

for a pedal harp!

三年前，我想多學一件樂器，於是選了豎琴。我喜歡豎琴那柔和悅耳，仿如天籟的聲音。為了方便練習，我便在家中放置了一部四十弦的手制式豎琴。我的親朋好友知道我在學一件新樂器，都很好奇地問：「樂器不是小孩子才學的嗎？」當他們發現我態度認真兼勤力練習，並未如他們所料只是興之所至地「貪玩一下」；便紛紛開始鼓勵我，給我加油打氣！過時過節，他們都不時送一些與豎琴扯上關係的小禮物給我。我收到的禮物有豎琴書簽、印有豎琴圖案的杯子、立體豎琴砌圖、掛在聖誕樹上裝飾用的小豎琴、還有各式各樣的豎琴音樂唱片；我甚至有一個只有七磅重，二十六弦的輕巧豎琴，方便我把它帶出外，參與一些社會服務的活動！

為此，我也多聽了豎琴音樂。最近，我在聽阿根廷二十世紀著名作曲家希納斯特拿(1916 - 1983)的豎琴協奏曲，作品25。我實在嚇了一跳！豎琴那晶瑩剔透的琴音，竟穿上了拉丁美洲的鮮艷舞衣，戴上了神秘莫測的薄紗，在管弦樂團伴襯下，迷人地舞動著。其實豎琴有很多限制，為它作大型樂曲確是一件不容易的事，但希納斯特拿竟能把豎琴各式各樣的拿手花式巧妙地用上了。佩服！

既然這協奏曲給了我那麼多驚喜，我便二話不說地找來了第一樂章的豎琴樂譜，並試著在我的手制式豎琴上彈奏。唉⋯⋯當然是不成功，因為這協奏曲用的是腳踏式豎琴！看來，我要考慮添置一部這樣的豎琴了。

Radio 4 will launch a four-episode programme, hosted by Rebecca Siu to celebrate Alberto Ginastera’s 100th birthday next month. An excerpt of his Harp Concerto, Op. 25, will be broadcast.

2016年4月是希納斯特拿誕生百週年紀念，第四台會推出由蕭程佳明主持，一連四集介紹希納斯特拿的特輯，節目中會播放他的豎琴協奏曲，作品25(選段)。
