Our July Artist-in-Residence flutist Sibei Weng gave an impressive recital to a full house at Studio One. The crowd was thrilled and the queue for her autograph took a long time to clear. A flashback of the event is on P. 4. This month, our final ‘Artist-in-Residence’ of the year, violinist and viola player Andrew Ling takes the stage.

A word about that special instrument – the viola! In an orchestra, the violin has the bright, soaring melodies, the cello and double bass get the sonorous low notes. The violas don’t have the sparkling timbre or ringing bass sound. Composers have given them some very important moments, for example at the beginning of Tchaikovsky’s ‘Pathétique’ Symphony No. 6. But, more often, they are in the middle sound, modestly providing harmonic, rhythmic and textural support to others. Partly because of its rather melancholic tone and limited volume, the viola also has a much smaller solo repertoire. Ironically, the instrument seems to be famous for being infamous!

This month, though, the viola has a time to shine on Radio 4!

Andrew Ling will give a live recital playing both the violin and the viola on 29 September at Studio One. A week earlier, you can hear his pre-recorded recital. These two programmes are friendly gatherings when he will be joined by his musical colleagues in chamber works of different combinations. Andrew is a highly versatile musician. He is the Hong Kong Phil’s Principal Violist, a distinguished violinist, a gifted conductor, an avid chamber musician, and a radio presenter! No kidding, this month, on top of performing, our ‘Artist-in-Residence’ will be joined by French culture expert Joanne Chan to introduce to you French music and lifestyle in the segment ‘Vive la musique classique française’ broadcast every Tuesday and Thursday at 5:30pm in Four for Classics.

The great Finnish composer Einojuhani Rautavaara passed away on 28 July at the age of 87. He wrote in a variety of styles and had a huge output, encompassing different genres of music. Aside from Sibelius, Rautavaara is generally considered the most notable Finnish composer. For this reason, the Finnish Broadcasting Company has offered us some recordings from live concerts of works by Rautavaara. You can hear his ‘Cantus Arcticus’, which bears a subtitle - Concerto for Birds and Orchestra. Other works in the programme include his Arabescata and Ballad for harp and string quintet. You can also hear Rautavaara talking in English about the inspirations behind the Ballad. That’s a special remembrance episode of Live on 4 to be broadcast on 24 September.

A word about The Rain It Raineth – A Shakespeare Journey in Words and Music which will take place at Studio One, Broadcast Drive on 2 September. The artists are all set to bring you a delightful combination of music and literature. If you haven’t reserved a seat, call us at 2339-6425 during officer hour. If you can’t get one of the few remaining tickets, you can listen to the concert in Live on 4 on 17 September. 出,觀眾反應熱烈,排隊等候索取簽名的人龍久久未能消散。當日

盛況刊於第4頁。今年,我們最後一位「駐台演奏家」― 精通小提

琴和中提琴的凌顯祐將於本月登場。

提到中提琴,它是一件相當特別的樂器。在管弦樂團中,小提琴演

奏明亮高亢的樂句,大提琴和低音大提琴演奏雄渾的低音;中提琴

的聲音既不光輝,也不震撼。多位作曲家卻曾把好些重要的樂句交

予中提琴,如柴可夫斯基第六交響曲「悲愴」的開始部份,就是典

型的例子。不過,中提琴較多在中音區「謙虛」地為其他樂器帶來

和聲、節奏及織體上的配搭;也由於它的音色比較沉鬱,音量又不

太大,所以獨奏曲目較少,亦鮮有中提琴獨奏會舉行。倒也有些吊

詭,似乎中提琴「不為人熟悉」,就是它最為人熟悉之處!

然而,中提琴於本月將在第四台以主角亮相!

9月29日,凌顯祐於一號錄播室以小提琴和中提琴演出。一週前,

會先有他的錄音音樂會。兩套節目可說是良朋共聚,當中他與音樂

好夥伴,演出不同組合的室樂作品。凌顯祐多才多藝,是香港管

弦樂團的中提琴首席,演奏小提琴同樣水準一流;他亦是一位優秀

的指揮,也熱愛室樂演奏,更是電台節目主持人!沒錯,除奏樂

之外,我們這位「駐台演奏家」於本月逢星期二及四播出的四時行

樂,將與法國文化及旅遊達人陳祖泳在「法識音樂」環節中,跟聽

眾分享法國音樂和生活情懷。

著名作曲家拉特化拿於7月28日去世,享年八十七歲。他的寫作風

格多變,產量驚人。一般認為,他是繼西貝流士之後,最多人認識

的芬蘭作曲家。正因如此,芬蘭廣播公司特別送上多場拉特化拿作

品的現場錄音供樂迷欣賞。在9月24日的第四台音樂會中,你可以

聽到他的「北極之歌」,這套作品的副標題是雀鳥與樂團協奏曲;

其他曲目包括《阿拉伯斯加達》及為豎琴和弦樂五重奏而寫的敍事

曲。你更可聽到作曲家以英語介紹這首敍事曲的靈感來源。

Flutist Sibei Weng was our ‘Artist-in-Residence’ in July. She teamed up with pianist Cherry Tsang and cellist Vincent Lu to

perform five works of music in three different genres: Western classical, jazz, and modern Chinese music. The idea behind this

arrangement was to bring out, from simple to complex, the different layers and tensions that the flute can create. Her skilful and

professional experience attracted an audience that lined up in the foyer of RTHK Broadcasting House an hour before the concert!

This live concert was broadcast on 14 July, and you can listen to it again via our programme archive at www.rthk.hk/radio4.

7月14日,香港電台一號錄播室高朋滿坐。熱情的觀眾早在晚上7時已在廣播大廈大堂等候入場,欣賞於8時現場直播「駐台演奏

家」翁斯貝的音樂會。當晚,吹奏長笛的翁斯貝聯同鋼琴家曾捷麗與大提琴家呂佳送上五首精彩作品。音樂會曲目有當代中國音

樂、爵士風格的樂曲,也有傳統的西方古典音樂。翁斯貝表示,希望透過這場音樂會展現長笛由簡單至豐富的層次感和張力。透過

翁斯貝的專業演奏,大家都見識了長笛那豐富的音色,實在大開眼界。

Violists are not unlike people who work invisibly around us: construction workers, street cleaners, people who trim plants

on the sides of the streets… They might be unnoticed but they are quietly making solid contributions. The viola has a similar

unremarkable role in the history of music. It was described by German composer Johann Joachim Quantz (1697 - 1773) as,

in his times, an instrument ‘commonly regarded as of little importance in the musical establishment’. Less than subordinate, it

seemed to be something one could easily do without. Even today, when parents encourage children to take up an instrument, the

usual choice would be violin or cello, seldom, if ever, the viola. Born and raised in Hong Kong, Andrew Ling is a wonderful violist,

currently Principal Viola of the Hong Kong Philharmonic. Is he an exception by any chance? Was the viola his first instrument?

Music Stories Quietly Told

Musical beginning

‘I got asked that a lot,’ he said. It turns out he did not start with the

viola, but the piano, his kindergarten instrument. The moment when

a string instrument entered his life was before he started primary

school, when he went to a violin recital with his father, and afterwards

wanted to learn the violin. It was not long before he was touring

internationally as a violin soloist in Yip’s Children’s Choir around Asia,

Europe, and America. The viola naturally came to him later as a result

of trying out quartets with his friends. He would play the viola part

when nobody else wanted to.

THE unnoticed pillar, sky, and sunlight

Accomplished at both string instruments, why did he surrender the

flamboyant violin aureole and instead chose the little-noticed viola?

Andrew explained the instrument’s crucial role in music, ‘The viola

fills in the harmonies for others and is like the pillar of a building,

one that is not necessarily seen but nonetheless extremely important.

Let’s imagine the painting of Monet’s Haystacks without the sky and

sunlight. All the meaning and atmosphere in the paintings would

be gone and no one would be able to appreciate the beauty of

the haystacks. Violists play the role of the sky and the light in the

paintings, subtle but crucial. It sets up the mood for the melody and

when we have a tune written for the viola, it is always one of the best

and most gorgeous tunes in the piece. The viola tune in Bruckner’s

Fourth Symphony, which we just played with Maestro van Zweden

this year was beautiful and it was almost like the sound from heaven.’

Working with orchestra is a major part of Andrew’s musical career.

Lorin Maazel, Christoph Eschenbach, Edo de Waart, and Jaap van

Zweden are just some of the leading conductors he has worked

with. Aside from his role as a solo and orchestral player, he is also a

conductor of various orchestras. Chamber music was how Andrew began to be connected

with the viola and it has continued to be a genre he is very passionate about. He has played

with many renowned musicians including Cho-liang Lin, Jamie Laredo, and our own RTHK

Quartet, as well as being a regular at the Hong Kong International Chamber Music Festival.

Music gatHEring

Times have changed. The viola is no longer the mundane accompanying instrument

of Quantz’s time. Andrew will demonstrate in this month’s two ‘Artist-in-Residence’

programmes that the viola can also stand on its own. For the recorded programme to

be broadcast on Thursday, 22 September, in addition to including Piazzolla’s Le Grand

Tango—his personal favourite—and Vieuxtemps’s technically challenging Élégie, he will

also perform on the violin in sonatas by Ysaÿe, Mozart, and Brahms. Pianists Nancy Loo,

Michael Mak, and Dora Tsang will join him in this programme that covers a wide spectrum

of musical styles and periods.

As for the live concert on Thursday, 29 September, it will be ‘a gathering of my friends

and colleagues’ in Andrew’s words, as he has again invited Michael Mak, whom he has

worked with since high school, and also Hong Kong Philharmonic colleague, cellist

Richard Bamping, as guest artists. The programme features Bach’s Sonata for Viola da

Gamba; Tchaikovsky’s Piano Trio, ‘an emotional roller coaster’; and a 21st-century work

by Andrew’s friend, Finnish composer Magnus Lindberg. It is a repertoire spanning three

centuries of music in one evening.

‘I see every piece of music as a life, or an episode in life of oneself, and I would love to

narrate that story to everyone through music.’ Not only will interesting stories be told but

also they will beautifully be told in the ravishing sounds of two irreplaceable instruments.

Andrew will play on a Guadagnini violin, specially loaned to him by violin maker Florian

Leonhard for this project. Meanwhile, the viola he uses is one made by Gaetano Sgarabotto.

中提琴手有點像社會裡默默耕耘的人,像建築工人、清理街道的人、修剪路旁花草的人,雖不起眼,卻踏

實地默默貢獻付出。音樂歷史裡,中提琴也彷彿擔當配角角色。德國作曲家昆安斯 (1697 - 1773) 曾表示當

時中提琴「在音樂體制中普遍被視為不重要」,原來連配角也當不成,變了閒角。來到今天,家長鼓勵子

女學樂器一般只會想到小提琴、大提琴,亦少有中提琴的份兒。現任香港管弦樂團(港樂)中提琴首席的凌顯

祐,於香港土生土長,擁有出色演奏造詣的他,是否眼光獨到,打從一開始就喜愛中提琴?

音 樂 起 點

「我常常被問到這個(問題)。」凌顯祐這樣回應。原來他的音樂起點並非中提琴,而是幼稚園時已接觸的鋼

琴。升小學前跟爸爸欣賞過一場小提琴獨奏會後,他主動提出學小提琴,從此弦樂成為他生命的一部份,

不久更以小提琴獨奏身份,隨葉氏兒童合唱團巡迴亞太、歐美演出。後來與朋友一起試奏四重奏,沒有人

拉中提琴就由他頂上,如此順理成章與中提琴結緣。

不 起 眼 的 支 柱 、 天 空 、 光 線

既然小提琴與中提琴功夫均手到拿來,為何捨棄小提琴的主角光環,反而選擇隱藏在較不起眼的中提琴角

落?凌顯祐道出中提琴在樂曲中的關鍵角色:「中提琴為其他聲部填補和聲,有如建築物的支柱,未必起

眼,卻至關重要。試想像莫奈的畫作《乾草堆》,假如失去了天空和光線,畫作的意義與氣氛也會蕩然無

存,無法細味乾草堆的美態。中提琴正是擔當畫作中天空與光線的角色,含蓄卻重要,為旋律建構氣氛。

而且中提琴每逢拉奏旋律,也總會是樂曲中最扣人心弦的調子。今年與港樂在梵志登指揮下演奏過布魯克

納的第四交響曲,那段中提琴旋律簡直如同天籟一樣。」

樂團佔凌顯祐音樂事業中非常重要的

部份,與他合作過的指揮均是首屈一

指的大師,包括馬錫爾、艾遜巴赫、

迪華特和梵 志 登 等。除獨奏者和樂

手的角色以外,他更以指揮身份與不

同樂團合作。室樂是凌顯祐接觸中提

琴的起點,至今依然是他非常醉心的

演奏領域。他曾與林昭亮、拉雷杜、

香港電台弦樂四重奏等音樂家同台,

亦經常獲邀於香港國際室內樂音樂節

演出。

時移世易,中提琴不再像昆安斯的年代被視為平淡的

伴奏樂器,從凌顯祐本月兩場「駐台演奏家」曲目足

證中提琴也能獨當一面。他為9月22日(星期四)播

出的錄音音樂會,挑選了個人至愛的皮亞蘇拉〈大探

戈〉,還有魏歐當挑戰技巧難度的悲歌。他更會拉奏

小提琴,送上易沙意、莫扎特和布拉姆斯的小提琴奏

鳴曲。羅乃新、麥柱基與曾樂冰三位鋼琴家,將與他

合作帶來這套跨越多個年代、多種風格的曲目。

至於9月29日(星期四)的現場音樂會,按凌顯祐形容

是一次「以樂會友的聚會」。他再次邀請了早於中學

時期認識的麥柱基為他彈奏鋼琴,另外還有港樂同事

鮑力卓拉奏大提琴,由巴赫的古提琴奏鳴曲開始,到

柴可夫斯基筆下「情感起伏如坐過山車」的鋼琴三重

奏,再到凌顯祐好友,芬蘭作曲家連保的二十一世紀

作品,攜手將橫越三個世紀的曲目濃縮於一晚送上。

彩故事,凌顯祐更特別為本月的演出,向小提琴名

匠里安赫特借來寡達尼尼小提琴,又會以史加拉波托

As you can see, symphonies written by composers from Germany and Austria proved to be the most popular, occupying eight out of ten places. Beethoven topped the list, and Oliver Condy, editor of the BBC Music Magazine, did not find it surprising. ‘Conductors love conducting it. They love it because there is just so much to it, there is so much happening... that opening is a real punch in the face,’ said Condy, referring to Beethoven’s ‘Eroica’ Symphony.

Mark Brown, the arts correspondent of The Guardian, however, found it surprising that Beethoven’s No. 5 is not on a top 10 spot, but came in 11th place. The arguably more popular No. 40 by Mozart ranked at 15, surpassed by his final symphony, No. 41, which came in third place. The most recent work on the list is Symphony No. 5 composed by Shostakovich in 1937, ranking at 17. Condy explains that writing shorter orchestral pieces with titles is more in style than writing symphonies nowadays, attributing to the absence of modern symphonies on the list.

What about the exact choices of famous conductors? Simon Rattle’s top three were Beethoven’s Third, Bruckner’s Eighth and Mahler’s Das Lied von der Erde. Marin Alsop voted for Barber’s First, Brahms’ Third and Mahler’s Second. Sakari Oramo’s choices were Beethoven’s Third, Mahler’s Third and Sibelius’ Fifth. 們最喜愛的交響曲,所得的結果會被列入二十大交響曲。想

4 September: Verdi’s Macbeth

Macbetto (Macbeth) was the tenth opera by Giuseppe Verdi (1813 - 1901), composed for a production in Florence in 1847. He regarded it as his finest achievement up to that time. Nearly two decades after its successful premiere, Verdi was asked to compose a suite of ballet music for the opera’s performances in Paris, as was customary for grand opera productions in the French capital city. He took the opportunity to make a substantial revision of the work. As a result, the 1865 Paris version has come to be regarded as one of the most powerful music dramas of Verdi’s middle period.

In September, Sunday Opera presents a forceful and expressive setting of one of Shakespeare’s most powerful tragedies, a lively comedy based on a humourous Bohemian folk tale, a four-hour long epic recounting the heroic deeds of a legendary Swiss patriot, and the early flowering of genius in an amusing one-act farce by an 18-year-old Italian composer.

Although in broad outline, the plot of the opera follows faithfully Shakespeare’s famous tragedy, yet the librettists Francesco Piave and (for the revised version) Andrei Maffei did not succeed in portraying the complexity of Shakespeare’s characters nor their subtle and intricate motivations. The work is thus uneven despite the many fine pages of Verdi’s music, especially those associated with Lady Macbeth’s fiery ambition and eventual mental decline.

In our critically acclaimed recording of 1976, Maestro Claudio Abbado leads a potent cast with baritone Piero Cappuccilli in the title role, bass Nicolai Ghiaurov as Banquo, mezzo-soprano Shirley Verrett as Lady Macbeth and tenor Plácido Domingo as Macduff. Choral and orchestral support is provided by the superb artistic forces of the Teatro alla Scala of Milan.

11 September: Dvořák’s The Devil and Kate

Antonín Dvořák (1841 - 1904) began his professional career as an orchestral viola player at the Bohemian Provincial Theatre, which later became the Czech National Theatre of Prague under the direction of Bedřich Smetana, whose music had a beneficial influence on young Dvorak’s early compositional style.

Universally acclaimed for his symphonic, chamber, and instrumental music, Dvořák did not produce an equally successful output of operatic compositions. Of his ten operas, Rusalka has managed to occupy a place in the international repertoire for its lyrical beauty. Within his own country, Čert a Káča (The Devil and Kate, 1898) enjoys wide popularity for its comic vitality and robust humour.

The libretto by Adolf Wenig presents a highly individual treatment of a Czech fairy-tale about a clumsy devil and a courageous country woman. After paying a visit to Hell, where her fiery temperament frightens even the devil, Kate helps the hero Jirka to persuade the ruling Princess to abolish serfdom and give real freedom to her people.

In our recording, mezzo-soprano Anna Barová performs the title role as Kate; bass Richard Novak sings Marbuel the devil; tenor Miloš Ježil portrays Jirka the shepherd; and soprano Brigita Šulcová plays the Princess. The Brno Janáček Opera Chorus and Orchestra perform under the baton of Jiri Pinkas.

18 September: Rossini’s William Tell (Part 1)

Gioachino Rossini (1792 - 1868) was born in Pesaro, in northern Italy, and brought up in Bologna, where he began to receive his professional training at the Conservatory of Music at the age of 14. He was a prodigy with exceptional talents in harpsichord, piano, cello, singing, and composition, having completed at the age of 12 a highly polished set of sonatas for strings and a wide variety of instrumental and vocal pieces.

Rossini’s first opera, La Cambiale di Matrimonio (The Marriage Contract) was composed and produced in Venice in 1810, when he was barely 18. He wrote his first important opera seria, Tancredi, in 1813 and his great opera buffa, The Barber of Seville, three years later. From then on, Rossini went from success to success. His progress was triumphant as opera after opera spread his fame throughout Europe and filled his purse. Upon completion of William Tell, his 39th opera, Rossini suddenly decided to retire from composing for the theatre. He was only 37 years old and for the remaining 39 years of his life, he spent his days enjoying himself, living in Bologna and Paris, keeping a mistress (eventually marrying her 17 years later), and entertaining friends lavishly. He passed away in Paris, aged 76.

William Tell is based on the play by Friedrich Schiller. The original French libretto was written by Etienne de Jouy and Hippolyte Bis. The opera’s length, more than 4 hours of music, and casting requirements, such as the extreme high range demanded of the principal tenor, have contributed to the difficulty of producing the work. Its premiere performances at the Paris Opera in 1829 had a disastrous reception. Its Italian version, Guglielmo Tell, with libretto by Calisto Bassi and first performed at the San Carlo Theatre of Naples in 1833, was more successful with critics and audience alike. In subsequent revivals, the Italian version is the one that has been more frequently staged and recorded.

The opera opens with a famous overture which is a masterpiece of tone-poem writing in four movements depicting, respectively, dawn, a storm, call to the dairy cows, and march of the Swiss warriors. To fit our programme duration, we have divided the opera into two parts. Part 1 consists of music up to the first scene of Act III and tells the story of the struggle between the Swiss people and their Austrian governor, the tyrant Gessler; the heroic deeds of William Tell in protecting his compatriots against the foreign forces; and the hopeless love between Arnoldo, a Swiss freedom fighter and Mathilde, a Habsburg princess.

Our recording, in Italian, boasts of a fabulous cast headed by baritone Sherrill Milnes in the title role, tenor Luciano Pavarotti as Arnoldo, soprano Mirella Freni as Mathilde, and bass Ferruccio Mazzoli as Gessler. The Ambrosian Opera Chorus and the National Philharmonic Orchestra are conducted by Riccardo Chailly.

25 September: Rossini’s William Tell (Part 2) and La Cambiale di Matrimonio

On this last Sunday of September, Part 2 of Rossini’s William Tell will be played for your listening pleasure. This part consists of the second scene of Act III and the whole of the concluding Act IV. The former brings the action of the opera to its climax where, to punish William Tell for refusing to pay respect to the Austrian authorities, Gessler has Tell’s son Jemmy seized. An apple is balanced on the boy’s head and Tell is ordered to shoot an arrow through it. Father and son emerge victorious from this cruel challenge to the joyful acclaim of the Swiss people. The furious Gessler puts William and Jemmy under arrest awaiting execution. In the final scene of the opera, William Tell escapes from imprisonment, crosses Lake Lucerne in a storm, and kills Gessler with a single shot of an arrow. The Swiss fighters and the common people sing a paean to the magnificence of nature and the return of freedom as the curtain closes on this grandiose epic.

After listening to Rossini’s last opera William Tell, the crowning achievement of an extremely successful and lucrative career, we have the pleasure to invite you to enjoy the same composer’s first work of the genre, La Cambiale di Matrimonio (The Marriage Contract), a delightful comic opera in one act, the product of a youth of 18 that demonstrates his enormous talent and wit. Rossini needed only a few days to complete the score that already possesses the most significant elements of a style that was to blossom with glory in maturity: beautiful melodies, meticulous embellishments, lively rhythms, exciting speed, and tremendous crescendos.

Set to a libretto by Gaetano Rossi, the story centres around London businessman Tobias Mill’s plan to marry off his daughter Fanny to the wealthy Canadian merchant Slook, who is arriving for a visit. Fanny is secretly in love with young Edoardo, who is too poor to propose marriage. After being threatened with bodily harm by the young lovers and challenged to a duel by Tobias for failing to sign the marriage contract, Slook decides to make Edoardo his heir, thus enabling the young man to marry Fanny, and, with Slook’s benevolence and Tobias’ blessing, all ends happily.

In our recording made at the Teatro Grande of Brescia in 1960, soprano Renata Scotto sings the role of Fanny; tenor Nicola Monti that of Edoardo; bass Renato Capecchi plays Slook; and baritone Rolando Panerai is Tobias Mill. The Virtuosi di Roma provides brilliant support under the direction of Maestro Renato Fasano.

4/9 : 沒安全感的馬勒

精神分析學(Psychoanalysis)的始祖佛洛伊德(Sigmund Freud)曾分

析過的作曲家,大概只有馬勒一人。他和馬勒花了一個下午在荷

蘭著名大學城萊登(Leiden)散步,之後指出馬勒如果希望精神狀

況改善的話,必須接受精神分析治療。但如果馬勒這樣做的話,

他的創意則有機會消失。馬勒當然沒有接受治療,之後不久便離

世。馬勒一生受到他帶猶太人血統的身份(那時猶太人在德語社會

被排擠),以及兒時的遭遇所影響,造成了緊張多疑的性格。麥敦

平將分析「死亡」這意念為何纏繞馬勒的一生。

18/9 : 飲與吹

藥物、毒品和酒精都是可以改變精神狀態的物質,而改變了精神狀

態又是否作曲家創作靈感的泉源呢?如果是白遼士的話,恐怕是:

他的代表作幻想交響曲,應改名為吞雲吐霧交響曲也不為過;但流

亡法國的蕭邦吸食鴉片,卻不是因為它是「康樂藥物」,而是因為

它的醫療作用。俄羅斯作曲家穆索斯基喜歡酒多於喜歡煙,四十來

歲便離世,生前更因酗酒而不能作曲。芬蘭作曲家西貝流士活至九

十多歲,但晚期的二十多年亦譜不出交響曲,其中一個說法是因他

喝酒喝壞了腦,另一個說法則是他在一氣呵成,創作單樂章的第七

交響曲之後,再難找到突破。

11/9 : 活在自己世界的布魯克納

布魯克納為人木訥,其作品以冗長見稱,作品素材雖經常重覆,

但結構既複雜又精密。種種跡象顯示,布氏有自閉傾向。其實患

自閉症的「名人」,亦包括不少著名的數學家和物理學家,有

說是因為他們活在自己的世界裡,有助於對抽象結構的探究。患

自閉症的音樂家又是否偏好鑽研曲式呢?麥醫生會為大家作深入

分析。

25/9 : 還有「正常人」在嗎?問題與結論

以 上 七 集 分 析 了 作 曲 家 患 上 的 精 神 病 , 那 麼 表 演 者 又 如 何 ?

提到精神有問題的演奏家,筆者立時想到加拿大鋼琴怪傑古特

(Glenn Gould)……但他也許更近似作曲家。節目內所討論患精神

病的作曲家,大多來自十九世紀浪漫時期。時代跟精神病又有

否關連?張智鈞將從他最心愛的文藝復興時期音樂找個反例。最

後,在多集節目中好像是說大部份作曲家都是「非常人」,還有

「常人」在世嗎?麥醫生說,慈祥的海頓爸爸也許是個典型的

「正常人」了。

印象派音樂是最具代表性的現代法國音樂,法國印象派作曲家

德布西和拉威爾的作品,都顯示出法國音樂是表達寬鬆和自由

的。如果音樂可以詮釋他們的文化和個人品味,當仔細閱讀這

兩位作曲家的樂譜並細心聆聽,便會發現作品中每個音符都經

過深思熟慮,精雕細琢,而且非常有規律,以營造一個模糊的

圖像和情緒。正因為圖像模糊不清,演奏家可以嘗試用自己的

理解去演繹那首樂曲,而聽眾則可以用自己的方法去體會和欣

賞。這些作曲家的音樂其實十分細緻和認真,在二十世紀更啟

發了許多作曲家,包括俄國的史達拉汶斯基和匈牙利的巴托也

依循印象派的風格去創作。

「法識音樂」亦想表達另一種觀念,就是法國人表現出來的

那種魅力,不一定需要由法國製造,亦不一定需要從土生土

長的法國人而來,主要是對法國歷史和文化有深入了解和認

識,融會貫通,再加以個人品味和眼光來創造出一個獨特的

「自己」。在「法識音樂」中,聽眾也會聽到一些並不是在法

國出生、長大的音樂家的作品,而這些作品的背後,都是別具

代表性和擁有法國歷史及文化的音樂。簡單來說,音樂創作只

要擁有自己的歷史、文化背景,是不一定需要追隨某種的寫作

風格,只要是感情自然流露和與別不同的創作,也可以是一篇

和諧、動聽的樂章。

透過這環節,希望為大家詮釋法國古典音樂,透過音樂帶聽眾

「聽法樂、遊法國」。從音樂出發,認識法國這個國家的文化

底蘊,欣賞法國人追求品味與享受的生活態度。透過音樂,以

不同生活角度去理解、帶出和細味法國歷史。節目還有一些有

趣的現代新聞和故事,讓聽眾體會法國人獨有的特質。

Hailed as one of the most acclaimed and prestigious Finnish composers after Jean Sibelius, Einojuhani Rautavaara died on 28 July in his hometown of Helsinki, after suffering from complications following surgery. He was 87.

Rautavaara was born in 1928 in Helsinki to an operatic bass father and a doctor mother. Encouraged by his parents, Rautavaara began learning piano at a young age. Both parents died before he turned 16, and he was raised by his aunt. At the age of 20, Rautavaara studied in the Sibelius Academy in Helsinki. Later he received a scholarship from the Juilliard School in New York, and studied with Aaron Copland at Tanglewood before winning the Thor Johnson Contest with A Requiem of Our Time in 1954, a work which caught international attention.

Throughout Rautavaara’s career, he had experimented with various compositional styles. His first and second symphonies from the 50s exude neo-classicist style. In the 60s, he joined the popular trend of writing serial music. He explored the possibilities of neo-romanticism in the 70s, and in the 80s, he ultimately found and developed his own unique voice. His music is often described as mystical, romantic, poetic and with a pastoral Nordic taste, and his instrumentations are characterised by calm strings with soft and mellow flute, bells, and horns.

Rautavaara’s diverse output include eight symphonies, nine operas – some of the stories were based on biographies of legendary people such as Van Gogh and Rapustin, twelve instrumental and one vocal concertos, and large number of choral works. Notable works include his ‘Cantus Arcticus’, a concerto for birds and orchestra, in which he incorporated birdsongs he recorded near the Arctic Circle and Northern Finland. His Symphony No. 7, ‘Angel of Light’, inspired by his childhood visions, was nominated for many prizes, including the Grammy. In an interview with the Associated Press, Rautavaara once expressed that he felt lucky to be a musician in Finland. ‘Without grants, it would have been difficult for me to survive,’ said Rautavaara. ‘Luckily I can spend all day composing if I want to.’

After a torn aorta in 2004, the nearly-eighty-year-old Rautavaara miraculously survived. But his fragile body didn’t stop his strong will to compose. Works in his late years include a pair of concertos, one for percussion, Incantations (2008), and his Cello Concerto No. 2 (2009), the Canto V for string orchestra (2011), and some chamber, choral and vocal works, as well as Mirroring for piano (2014) and a Fantasia for violin and orchestra (2015). His opera Kaivos will receive its first opera stage premiere in Budapest next month on 21 October.

被譽為繼西貝流士之後,最優秀和著名的芬蘭作曲家拉特化

拿,因為手術後出現併發症,7月28日於家鄉赫爾辛基離世,享

年八十七歲。

拉特化拿1928年生於赫爾辛基,父親是一位歌劇男低音,母親

是一位醫生。自小父母鼓勵他學習鋼琴,可惜父母在拉特化拿十

六歲生日前相繼離世,從此拉特化拿由姨姨撫育照顧。二十歲那

年,拉特化拿入讀位於赫爾辛基的西貝流士音樂學院,後來贏得

獎學金,遠赴紐約茱莉亞音樂學院深造。他曾在鄧肯活跟隨柯普

蘭學習。1954年,二十六歲的拉特化拿憑著《現世代的安魂曲》

贏得科爾•莊遜比賽大獎,聲譽漸隆並揚威海外。

在拉特化拿的創作生涯中,曾經以不同音樂風格譜曲。五十年

代,他的第一和第二交響曲,洋溢著新古典主義的風格。六十

年代中期,他亦開始試驗當時流行的序列主義。七十年代,他

又開始發掘新浪漫主義的可能性。到了八十年代,他終於確立

個人獨特風格。在配器上,拉特化拿喜愛平靜的弦樂、柔和的

長笛、鐘聲和號角聲。他的音樂被形容為浪漫神秘、富詩意,

並擁有北歐鄉村風情。

拉特化拿的創作類型十分多元化,包括八首交響曲、九齣歌

劇,其中包括以偉人自傳為題材的歌劇,例如畫家梵高和俄羅

絲 綢 之 路 的 重 要 交 匯 。 十 五 世 紀 帖 木 兒 帝 國 ( T i m u r i d

E m p i r e , 1370-1507) 皇 宮 所 在 的 赫 拉 特 ( H e r a t ) , 曾 是

東 西 文 化 傳 播 中 心 。 王 朝 瓦 解 後 , 宮 廷 樂 師 散 落 到 以

德 里 ( D e l h i ) 為 中 心 的 莫 卧 兒 帝 國 ( M u g h a l E m p i r e ,

1526 -1858),將音樂帶到印度,間接形成今天北印度的古典

音樂。很難想像,今天滿目瘡痍的首都喀布爾 (Kabu l ),上世

紀七十年代曾是南亞最重要的電影和流行音樂中心之一,以

「東方巴黎」聞名於世,有過例如札希爾 ( A h m a d Z a h i r ,

(qawwal i )唱遍世界,無人不知。大師唱頌渾厚激盪,聽眾按

例入迷出神。伴奏卡瓦里吟讚的手提風琴 (harmonium),十七

世紀由基督傳教士帶到南印度,及後傳遍南亞半島,是最「傳

統」的樂器之一。調式(mode)在南亞稱為拉格(raga),是最基

本的音樂觀念,包含特定的旋律上下行規律和裝飾音模式,而

In September, Songs of the Earth,

hosted by ethnomusicologist Chuen-

Fung Wong in Cantonese, will feature

music from Afghanistan, India,

and Pakistan. Hong Kong-based

sitar master Anil Singh will perform

classical and semi-classical melodies

in the Hindustani repertoire brought

from his hometown Varanasi, the

holy city in northern India. Stay tuned

every Sunday at noon.

調式最少也有數十種 (今天我們只有大

小二調,很「落後」吧?! ),其中有不

少與整個南亞半島相通。南亞另一種獨

特音境 (soundscape),來自樂器的共

鳴弦 (sympathet ic s t r ings)以及持續

低音 (drone)效果。大部份南亞傳統弦

樂器都有共鳴弦,當中堪稱樂器之冠

的拉弦樂器薩朗基琴 (sarangi ),在印

度、尼泊爾、巴基斯坦和阿富汗四國

都流行。三根旋律弦下藏着約三十五

根共鳴弦(調音需時不短),共鳴箱大,

指板也濶,外型笨重,在大師蘇坦汗

(Sultan Khan,1940 – 2011)手上,

拉起來自拉賈斯坦 (Rajasthan)傳統的

搖籃曲,卻似溫柔低吟,如泣如訴。

香港向來臥虎藏龍。筆者年前巧遇長

居南丫島的西塔琴 ( s i t a r )演奏家阿尼

爾•辛格。西塔琴是北印度的彈弦樂

器 。 阿 尼 爾 • 辛 格 來 自 印 度 北 部 聖

城瓦拉納西 (Varanas i ),是著名宗派

麥 哈 家 • 藍 那 ( M a i h a r G h a r a n a )的

第 四 代 傳 人 ( 舉 世 知 名 的 西 塔 琴 大 師

Roméo et Juliette

Opera Hong Kong pays tribute to Shakespeare with opera Roméo et Juliette. The classic love story is as enthralling now as centuries ago. In Gounod’s music, it has been transformed into one of the most favourite operas with heartfelt duets between the love-torn protagonists, sung in this splendid production by French singers Vannina Santoni, soprano, and Sébastien Guèze, tenor. The Opera Hong Kong Chorus and Fujian Symphony Orchestra are conducted by Benjamin Pionnier.

香港歌劇院以《羅密歐與朱麗葉》向大文豪莎

士比亞致敬。這齣經典的愛情故事,感動古今

無數讀者與觀眾,在古諾筆下譜寫成最受人愛

Matthias Rácz Plays the Mozart Bassoon Concerto

Enjoy the only surviving bassoon concerto by Mozart, also the best known in the bassoon repertory, played by Matthias Rácz in this performance. Not only is he currently Lucerne Festival Orchestra’s Principal Bassoon, but he has also held the same position in the Zurich Tonhalle Orchestra for over a decade. Ken Lam, a frequent guest conductor of the Hong Kong Sinfonietta, conducts the Orchestra in Beethoven’s majestic ‘Eroica’ Symphony.

The Rain It Raineth — A Shakespeare Journey in Words and Music

Radio 4 marks the 400th anniversary of Shakespeare’s death with a special tribute evening. Actress Naomi Lawrence and Radio 4’s Jonathan Douglas read scenes and speeches by the Bard, and former Young Music Makers, soprano Vivian Yau and tenor Jasper Sung, accompanied by Siyi Fang and Karen Sung at the piano, sing songs by centuries of composers inspired by the Bard’s words. From Haydn’s She Never Told Her Love, Quilter’s Take, O Take those Lips Away, to Finzi’s Let Us Garlands Bring, and contemporary settings including Pasatieri’s dramatic Lady Macbeth — it will be an evening that speaks with Shakespearean magic.

Bridging the Glorious Dynasties of Ancient China and Hong Kong

The Hong Kong Chinese Orchestra opens its 40th season with an adventurous

musical journey through four glorious dynasties in the history of China. Producing

a tapestry of soundscape are Chew Hee-chiat’s Harken Back to Zhou, Cheng

Dazhao’s Reflections on Qin, Lao Luo’s Travelling West (on the Han Dynasty)

and Ng Cheuk-yin’s Tang Resonating. The Orchestra, under the baton of Artistic

Director Yan Huichang, is joined by erhu and dizi soloists Yang Xue and Sun

Yongzhi in the middle two pieces, as well as the Hong Kong Youth Chinese

Orchestra, Music Office and Hong Kong Junior Chinese Orchestra in the finale.

Join us for an exploration of the sound-world of Finnish composer Einojuhani Rautavaara with live recordings from the Finnish Broadcasting Company, Yle Archives. Works include Concerto for Birds and Orchestra, ‘Cantus Arcticus’, in which he replaced the conventional instrumental soloist with taped birdsong from Arctic Finland, and his Symphony No. 4, which, after an unsuccessful rewrite, was withdrawn and replaced by the suite Arabescata. We will hear it in

its original 1962 version.

In Memory of Maria Chow懷念周美華

It is with great sadness that we have learnt of the death of our former colleague Maria Chow. Maria was a regular fixture on Radio 4 in the 1980s. Her wonderful broadcasting voice and passion for her subject won her a devoted following, and it was thanks to her programmes that many radio listeners in Hong Kong came to appreciate classical music. We extend our deep-est sympathies to her family and friends.

周美華對古典音樂充滿熱情和擁有豐富的廣播經驗。她曾於八十年代擔任第四台主持及製作多類型節目,服務廣大樂迷。第四台對周美華的離世,深感惋惜。

There have been so many people that have inspired my interest in seeing the world, and a huge globe given to me by my parents at a very early age certainly heightened my curiosity - places oceans away with names that I couldn’t pronounce…

One of those inspiring people was my great aunt. I used to spend weekends with her at her apartment in New York. It was filled with exotic artwork and furniture that she collected while on her business travels as a fashion buyer. There were beautiful and striking things from Spain, India, the Middle East, and even Hong Kong. It was like visiting a museum where every piece had its own tale. I would sit, absolutely captivated, and listen to those stories. I wanted to go wherever she had been.

Since I left my birthplace, I’ve lived in four different countries (so far) and I have visited four times as many. In each country I encountered a new language (even in England!), new taste sensations, new customs, a whole new way of life and, best of all, new music.

Riccardo Muti once said, ‘Music is the only art that can bring people together, to communicate even if they speak different languages or if they have different religions.’ I found that to be very true when assimilating in others’ cultures. It was with Muti’s premise in mind that I created the ‘Music Beyond Borders’ cultural exchanges project. Previously presented only by Radio 4, the ‘Music Beyond Borders’ live, free concerts (one part of the project) have now become a part of the ‘New Vision Arts Festival’. The next concerts will be taking place on 5 and 6 November. If you are inquisitive, open-minded and adventurous like me, and are looking for some new sounds, these concerts are for you!

After the joint encore given by the Austrian and Italian artists of ‘Music Beyond Borders’ 2014

來自奧地利和意大利的音樂家在2014年 「無限領域」音樂會後謝幕

是身邊的人,讓我對這世界產生興趣。小時候父母給

我放眼世界,帶我到那些當時的我連名字也讀不出的

地方,藉以引起我的好奇心。

我的姨婆曾是一位時尚買手。她從西班牙、印度、中

東和香港等地購買家具,還有頗具異域風情的藝術

品,然後將它們填滿她在紐約的寓所。我曾經在那間

寓所渡過許多個週末。每件東西都有自己的故事,身

處其間,感覺就像參觀一間博物館。我坐在那兒,聽

她講故事,想像有一天自己也能踏足她到過的地方。

離開故鄉至今,我已在四個國家生活過。每到一個國

家,我總能接觸到一門全新的語言(即使是在英國!)

― 新的味覺享受、新的風俗、新的生活方式,以及新

的音樂。

偉大的指揮家慕迪曾經說過:「音樂是唯一能將人聯

繫在一起的藝術,那怕有些人使用不同語言,或有不

同的信仰宗教。」我十分同意他的話,這也是我籌辦

「無限領域」節目的原因。免費現場音樂會演出,是

「無限領域」的重要部份。在11月5日及6日的「新

視野藝術節」中,大家將欣賞到這類型跨國界的音

樂。如果你像我一樣好奇、心態開放且愛冒險,對於

「尋找新聲音」有十足熱情,這些音樂會將是你的心

水之選!
