Press ReleaseCommander, Surface Force Atlantic Public Affairs

NORFOLK

Damage control team Sailors from USS Nicho-las (FFG 47) and USS Mahon (DDG 72) showed off their skills to attendees at the New Breed of Warrior (NBOW) Convention held at the Virginia Beach Convention Center, Sept. 9 - 10.

The annual event had more than 100 exhibitors displaying the latest in tactical and outdoor gear. Static and interactive displays were available to the public to include Marine Corps tactical vehi-cles, Navy riverine boats, Coast Guard watercraft and a Navy MH-60 Seahawk helicopter as well as live demonstrations by exhibitors such as the Marine Corps Martial Arts Program.

“The displays were interesting and the booths had a lot of good information – the event was a good way for the locals to interact with the mili-tary,” said Damage Controlman 1st Class Scott Johnson of the Nicholas.

The Oliver Hazard Perry-class frigate Nicho-las and Arleigh Burke-class destroyer Mahon were chosen by Commander, Surface Force At-lantic (SURFLANT) to demonstrate one of the key components of the surface force: shipboard

damage control. Throughout the two-day exhi-bition, the damage control teams presented their gear, demonstrated the basics of fire fighting and answered questions from spectators.

“I think the booth and demonstration was a great opportunity to show the local community Nicholas’ pride and commitment to duty,” com-mented Lt. j.g. Nate Ahrens, Damage Control As-sistant on the frigate.

The opportunity to try on firefighting gear, learn about shipboard firefighting techniques and interact with the Sailors was open to all. Children and adults alike enjoyed watching Electronics Technician 3rd Class John Michaels of the Mahan enthusiastically recruit people into trying on the very heavy suit and gear and testing out some of the tools of the trade.

“It is a great opportunity to make some future Sailors,” said Michaels.

“Overall, I was very pleased with the convention. I hope to see Nicholas doing this for future events,” said Ens. Christina Gibson of Mahon. “The crew did an outstanding job demonstrating what our ship is capable of doing in case of an emergency, all while working to educate all those who stopped by.”

NBOW is in its second year and is dedicated to honoring those who serve and defend.

By Mark O. PiggottNaval Weapons Station Yorktown Public Affairs

YORKTOWN

More than 3,000 influen-za vaccinations were given at Naval Weapons Station (WPNSTA) Yorktown and Cheatham Annex by medi-cal personnel from Naval Medical Center Portsmouth (NMCP), Sept. 13, as part of a field training exercise.

Per Chief of Naval Opera-tions (CNO) Navy Vaccina-tion and Reporting Policy, Commander, Naval Instal-lation Command (CNIC) is testing installation-based pandemic influenza point of dispensing (POD) or mass vaccination plans.

“This exercise allows us to test, if a real pandemic broke out, how many people we can get inoculated in the shortest amount of time,” said Lt. j.g. Christopher Harvie, Vaccination Strike Team Three leader.

Department of Defense (DoD) policy requires im-munization of all active duty and reserve component personnel against influ-enza according to service-specific guidelines. For the 2011–2012 influenza season, the services have requested 4,117,000 doses of vaccine.

“The vaccine causes an au-toimmune response in your body that builds up antibod-ies against the flu,” Harvie explained. “This increases operational readiness and decreases downtime for our Sailors.”

To meet the exercise re-quirements, CNIC will com-bine a field training exercise (FTX) for select installa-

tions and a table top exercise (TTX) for other installations.

“All four of our vaccina-tion strike teams fall under NMCP,” said Harvie. “When we’re finished, we’ll have inoculated more than 40,000 military and civilian person-nel at installations all across Hampton Roads.”

At WPNSTA Yorktown and Cheatham Annex, per-sonnel from the installation and its 38 tenant commands participated in the opera-tion. These include Sailors and Marines from forward-deploying units like 2nd Fleet Anti-Terrorism Secu-rity Team (FAST) Company, Navy Cargo Handling Battal-ion (NCHB) ONE and Riv-erine Squadron (RIVRON) Three.

“This may have been an exercise to the medical staff, but to WPNSTA Yorktown, it’s essential to our mission readiness,” said Capt. Lowell Crow, Commanding Officer, WPNSTA Yorktown and Cheatham Annex. “We have to be ready 24/7 to provide ordnance to the fleet and op-erational support for our ten-ants. Getting our personnel properly vaccinated helps ensure that readiness, espe-cially through the harsh flu season.”

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Pre-vention (CDC), flu viruses are constantly changing. Each flu season, different flu viruses can spread. Getting vaccinated against the flu every season protects against the influenza viruses that will cause the most illness this season. The CDC rec-ommends the flu vaccine as the first and most important step in preventing the flu.

The pandemic exercise provides the Navy with both the opportunity to ensure its personnel, both military and civilian, are protected against the influenza virus as well as the chance to test “real world” response to a possible medical emergency.

Naval Weapons Station Yorktown gets vaccinated for 2011 Flu season

Mark O. PiggottChief Master-at-Arms Joshua Amaral receives an influenza vaccination from Hospital Cor-man Joseph Zaller at Naval Weapons Station Yorktown as part of a field training exercise, Sept. 13.

Flying changed Boensel’s perspec-tive and his career.

“I felt good about getting my wings, that was something I wanted to do – I wanted to fly – that’s kind of why I started down this road,” he said. “At that time I could never have realisti-cally envisioned making flag (com-missioned officer) … I was happy to get my wings and go to my squadron and do well, and the next thing you say, ‘Gee whiz, I screened for com-mand … because, ‘How cool would it be to be in charge?’”

Boensel said that being selected as a flag officer was a huge honor for him, but one of his proudest moments was becoming an honorary chief.

“The Chief’s Mess down in NAS (Naval Air Station) Jacksonville sur-prised me one afternoon and honored me by making me an honorary chief,” he explained. “It was something that they didn’t have to do … but those chiefs, those hard working, ‘heart and soul Navy professionals’ said hey, this guy gets it and we want him to be part of our club, part of our mess. I think that was about as good as you can get.”

During his naval career, many events helped to shape the Armed Forces that we know today. Events such as post-Vietnam restructuring, the inclusion of female Sailors at the Naval Academy, the cold war and the fall of the Berlin Wall, the Iran hos-tage crisis, as well as numerous wars.

“We were in the middle of the cold war when I came in and I can remem-ber a lot of times when we were on deployment, we were chasing Soviet submarines and they were chasing us around and hoping that no one was going to shoot at each other,” he re-called. “Since then, the Berlin Wall has fallen, the geopolitical dynamic has completely changed.”

His stellar career has not been with-out some challenges.

“My hardest challenge as admiral was to not go back and be a captain,” he said. “I tell all my CO’s, “I love

your job, I wish I had your job, but it’s not my job anymore … it’s your job! … That’s the biggest challenge for me, to allow people to do their work without me getting in their way, and frankly, they do their job in a spec-tacular way and maybe a little differ-ent than I would do it, but that’s OK. They’re doing really well. I feel good about being able to support them and get them the support they need to do their job well.”

Boensel offered some advice for Sailors and civilians alike to get the most out of the “Navy Experience.”

“I think part of it is having the right attitude and getting the most out of the experience,” he explained. “I don’t think you learn very much from not being challenged. I think the challenges are what mature you, what stretch you and what makes you more capable. It’s pretty easy to lead and manage when things are good and you have everything that you could abso-lutely ever wish for. The hard part is when things aren’t as good and things are scarce. That’s when your talent and skill is put to the test. I would say, don’t shy away from those opportuni-ties to go and broaden yourself and stretch your capability. That’s what is going to make you grow.”

When asked of what he will miss the most of his time in the Navy, he said simply, “the people.”

“Until you sit and reflect on the quality of people that you have the privilege to work with every day, the kind of dedication that they have for what they do, the kind of unselfish-ness that they have for doing it, the ethical underpinning that they have with regard to integrity and personal honor, doing the right thing regard-less of consequence – those are pretty special things,” he said. “I have great hopes that I will see that in my next career and I will be very pleasantly surprised if I see it at nearly the extent that I’ve known in the Navy.”

Boensel said that his time in the Navy afforded him the opportunity to see the world.

“I’ve gotten to see a lot of things and gone to a lot of places I never thought I’d get to go, do a lot of things I never thought I’d get to do,” he said. “The old recruiting theme about, ‘Join the Navy and see the world’ … I can attest, I did join the Navy and I’ve seen the world. I’ve seen parts of the world that I never thought I would have seen – some parts I’m not neces-sarily ready to go back to – but it was interesting to at least see them one time. It’s really been great. I’ve met incredible people and I’ve not only met incredible people, I’ve been privi-leged to work with incredible people.”

After retirement from the Navy, Boensel has plans to move to Jackson-ville, Fla., but he doesn’t have plans to stop working any time soon.

“I’m not sure I can just retire, retire. I’ve got to be doing something. I’m not sure what work I’m going to be doing there, but I’m looking forward to doing it,” he said. “I’ve got some good years and some energy left and I’m going to try to put it to good use.”

A change of command ceremony will be held today at Vista Point on-board Naval Station Norfolk. Boensel will be turning over command to Rear Adm. Townsend G. Alexander, who most recently served as Commander, Navy Region Southeast.
