Plantas epifíticas o saxícolas, raramente terrestres.

Rizomas cortos a largamente rastreros

Con escamas generalmente clatradas, basifijas, pseudopeltadas a peltadas.

Frondes de láminas enteras a pinnatífidas, mono a dimórficas

Pecíolos articulados al rizoma con varios hacecillos vasculares

Venación libre o anastomosada, formando areolas con venillas inclusas

Soros superficiales a impresos, circulares a elípticos, desnudos, con o sin parafisos

Esporas monoletes, sin perisporio conspicuo.

Esta familia con aproximadamente 30 géneros y 1000 especies, crece preferentemente zonas tropicales, aunque también se encuentran en regiones templado-frias por la latitud o altitud.
