17th Sunday in Ordinary Time

"Do you understand all these things?" They an-

swered "Yes".

How impressive to see the apostles answer

"Yes"! How many of us could claim the same an-

swer at the end of a homily, even on our favorite

gospel? You know the feeling when someone

tells a joke and your embarrassment is visi-

ble because someone asked, 'Did you get it'?

and you say 'No'?

Two Sundays in-a-row, we saw the apostles ask

Jesus for an explanation of the parables. Today

the gospel is shorter. Some will appreciate it! The

readings today help us consider what we treas-

ure in life, where we look for it and whether we

will have the patience until it appears. Some of

us have a well-calibrated GPS. Others are not as

clear. An open heart will help us reach the goal.

Are we like Solomon asking the Lord to know

what is right?

Is the kingdom of heaven a treasure you under-

stand for yourself today or is it postponed until

the end of the age?

Fr. François Pellissier

Domingo Diecisiete en el Tiempo Ordinario

"¿Entienden estas cosas?” ellos contestaron

“Si”.

Que impresionante oír a los apóstoles decir

“Si”.

Fr. François Pellissier

A new “Day Chalice” is going to be purchased. The old one we have been using is simply worn out and slowly turning green. Those who would like to be donors for the new parish chalice may speak to Barbara and get their name and donation on the list.

The word from Pope Francis:

“In many places evangelization begins with education, to which mis-sionary work dedicates much time and effort, like the merciful vine-dresser of the Gospel, patiently waiting for fruit after years of slow cultivation; in this way they bring forth a new people able to evange-lize, who will take the Gospel to those places where it otherwise would not have been thought possible. The Church can also be de-fined as 'mother' for those who will one day have faith in Christ. I hope, therefore, that the holy people of God will continue to exer-cise this maternal service of mercy, which helps those who do not yet know the Lord to encounter and love Him. Faith is God’s gift and not the result of proselytizing; rather it grows thanks to the faith and charity of evangelizers who witness to Christ. As they travel through the streets of the world, the disciples of Jesus need to have a love without limits, the same measure of love that our Lord has for all people. We proclaim the most beautiful and greatest gifts that He has given us: His life and His love.”

-- Message for World Mission Sunday, May 16, 2016
