This is a dignified nunnery and one of Yamato’s three Monzeki temples. It

was formerly the residence of Fuhito Fujiwara until Empress Kōmyō built the

Kokubunnuji (provincial nunnery) in it. It used to have a shichidō garan (seven-

hall temple) and to be prosperous, but declined when the capital was

transferred during the Heian period. The main hall is Japanese style, and was

rebuilt in the Momoyama period. The eleven faced Kannon statue is enshrined

in the temple. This nunnery is also known for its cute dog-shaped lucky

charms made from incense ashes mixed in to clay.

Onono Tobito, the son of Onono Imoko (famous for being a part of the

Japanese envoy to the Sui dynasty), resigned his post and sensed at this

location the Buddha of Healing Yakushinyorai during his practices. He built the

herbal bath-house in Mt. Tomi and deified Yakushi-sanzonbutsu (the three

honourable ones of healing) to heal the illness of the people. In 736, the great

hall was built by monk Gyōki according to an imperial decree of Emperor Shōmu

from 734. An Indian monk gave the temple the name of “Ryōsen-ji” and the

completion of the temple was celebrated. In 820, the monk Kūkai worshipped

Benzaiten in Okunoin. Because of the anti-Buddhist movement at the beginning

of the Meiji Restoration, the scale of the temple was reduced and many Buddhist

statutes were incinerated. In hopes of peace, the Rose Garden was opened in

1957. During the spring and autumn, roses bloom all over the garden.

overseas resided in this temple, making it a center of international exchange.

The traces of the tower and Nandaimon gate left in the south of the existing

precincts remind us of the former majesty of the temple.

The Kōnin-ji temple was built in the beginning of the Heian period. There are

two stories about its foundation. One story claims that the temple was founded

according to a story told by an old man who appeared in Emperor Saga’s dream.

Another story states that Kōbōtaishi founded the temple after seeing a meteor

fall down on Mt. Kokuzō, and taking it as a sign of a sacred mountain. Visitors

can look at cultural properties such as the statue of Kokuzō bodhisattva, said to

be made by Kōbōtaishi, and the statue of Dainichi-nyorai, said to be made by

Unkei. It is also said that the water from the Akaido well in Okunoin can help

cure eye diseases and other illnesses.

It is said that the temple was founded by buddhist priest Gyōki in 721, and

that the main hall was used as a model for the Great Buddha Hall of Tōdaiji

temple. Even today, the main hall is called “kokoromi no daibutsuden” (testing

of the Great Buddha Hall). Gyoki passed away at this temple in 749. It was

originally called Sugawara temple but the name was changed to Kikō-ji when

emperor Shōmu saw a mysterious light while visiting the temple. Colourful lotus

flowers in flower pots decorate the precincts from mid-June to August.

● Main hall (important cultural asset):The existing main hall was rebuilt during

the end of the Muromachi period. The original building is said to have been

called the “testing of the great buddha hall”.

The Yakushiji temple is the top ranking temple of the Hossōshū Buddhist sect.

The building of the temple began under emperor Tenmu’s reign in 680 and the

principal object of worship, Yakushi-sansonzō (three statues of Buddha) were

completed during the time of Emperor Jitō (697). The Temple itself was

completed in Asuka during the reign of Emperor Monmu. The Temple was

moved to its current location when Heijō became the capital (710).

Declared as a UNESCO world heritage on October 1998.

◆Shunie hanae ceremony: Shunie is an important ceremony held in Nara

during spring to pray for the well-being and prosperity of the whole

country. At Yakushiji Temple this ceremony is performed near the end of

March. For the Shunie at Yakushiji, 10 varieties of artificial flowers are

prepared, which is why it is also known as the Hanae (flower art)

ceremony.

Yatadera Temple (kongōsenji) was founded around 1300 years ago by

emperor Tenmū and held the quarters of 48 priests. It holds the oldest statue of

the Enmei-Jizō bodhisattva in Japan and prospered as the center of the Jizō

faith. Jizō is represented everywhere as holding a staff in his right hand and a

Cintamani stone in his left hand but in Yatadera temple he joins his index and

thumb in a distinctive style, which is now called the “Yata-style Jizō”.

The temple is also called the “Hydrangea temple” due to the blooming of

approximately 10,000 Hydrangea (approx. 60 species) in its precincts from

Kumagorishōja. It is said to be the predecessor of the Daianji temple of

Heijōkyō. The temple which monk Doji restored afterwards is the beginning of

Kakuanji temple. After praying to the Buddha of Healing, Yakushinyorai, for

the treatment of a mass that grew on empress Suiko’s forehead, it was cured

perfectly with no sign of a scar. The temple is told to have been named

Kakuanji (Kaku=forehead, an=healed) because of this story.

Based on descriptions in the Nihon Shoki (The Chronicles of Japan), this

shrine was built in 1890 at the site of Kashihara-no-miya, where Japan's first

emperor, Jinmu, is said to have ascended to the throne. Emperor Jinmu and the

empress are enshrined. The Main Hall and Kaguraden halls, which were built of

plain wood and peel of Japanese cypress, are located in the huge precincts of

530,000 square meters at the foot of Mt. Unebi. The buildings harmonize with

the white gravels on the approach to the shrine and the deep greenery of the

forest in the background, creating a splendid atmosphere. The Main Hall and

Bunkaden House are designated as important cultural properties. The Main Hall

spirit on his own. It is a holy ground that has been worshipped as a god’s

mountain. There is no main shrine and the people pray to the mountain through

way to worship a god. Nobody has been permitted to cut any trees and grass

When it was first introduced in Japan, during the Nara period, Buddhism

was protected by the imperial family. The thought that Buddha manifested

himself as a kami in Japan also became prevalent in that period and temples

were established in many influential shrines all over Japan. As Oomiwa

Shrine’s temple, Byōdō-ji temple flourished during the medieval period until the

early modern times. Although it lost all its power due to the oppression of

Buddhism during the Meiji Period, the Main Hall was reconstructed thanks to

recent efforts and gained the title of “Mt.Miwa Byōdōji Temple”.

The image of Bishamon-tennō, rarely shown to

the public (Main Hall)

Jan. 1st - 10th, Feb. 1st - 28th and Jul. 1st - 5th

The origin of the name Shigisan came from the story that Prince Shōtoku

prayed to Mt. Shigi for the subjugation of Mononobe Moriya and succeeded in

the war thanks to Bishamonten. The name means “a mountain which is worth

believing in and respecting”. The imperial title “Chōgosonshiji" was given to the

temple by Emperor Daigo when his illness was cured after the forefather of the

resurgence of Mt. Shigi, the holy priest Myōren, prayed to Bishamonten for his

recovery.
