A. Course Description Freshman English (FE) is a required one-year 6-credit course (3 credits for each semester) for

freshman students at Feng Chia University. To make the class more fun and useful for students

and also to take advantage of the latest language-learning technology, instruction in the FE

course takes two different forms: 1) Two hours per week of in-class instruction with an emphasis on aural/oral communication

skills plus oral assessment (Interview Student Manual can be accessed from the FE

Interview webpage. Go to http://www.fcuflc.fcu.edu.tw/ and click on “FE Interview” on

the top menu. 2) Two or more hours per week of independent self-study through the extensive reading

program, vocabulary acquisition, the FCU iLearn System, and online multimedia

language-learning sites.

Beginning with the 2011-12 academic year, students have been divided according to their

College Entrance Exam scores, taken either during their senior year of high school or in the

summer just prior to entering university. Based on these test results, students have been

placed into one of these four levels: Level 1 (Elementary), Level 2 (Intermediate), Level 3 (High

intermediate), and Level 4 (Advanced). The student’s proficiency, “Elementary,”

“Intermediate,” “High intermediate,” or “Advanced” is added to the class schedule (which can

be found through Course Search on the FCU website) and the official class transcript to identify

his/her level. We hope that this system will be a more accurate placement mechanism and

ensure a more homogeneous classroom environment. For Freshman English, the average class

size is around 35 to 40 students so that teachers can give each student more of their time and

attention.

B. Course Objectives Freshman English takes a communicative approach towards language education with a focus on,

but not limited to, developing students' aural/oral communication skills. The core principles

behind the FE curriculum are that language learning needs to be purposeful and grounded in

meaningful language use, and that learner autonomy needs to be developed to sustain lifelong

language learning. By introducing students the FCU iLearn System, language-learning websites,

and simplified readers, we hope that students in the first year learn with the help of their

teacher how to do their self-study in a responsible way, so that they are ready to continue this

approach on their own in the future. Accordingly, extensive reading, vocabulary acquisition,

and authentic assessments are integrated into the course design.

C. Teaching Materials Considering students’ different proficiency levels and varying learning needs, each level has its

unified textbook and self-study requirements, as described below.

Page 7: Freshman English Student Manual

1. Textbooks For the 2015-16 academic year, the textbooks for each level are shown in the following

table. The textbooks have been ordered by the school at a reduced price and are available

at Caves Books for the first four weeks of the semester (located in the old Hi-Life

convenience store in the Recreation building). Students may need to purchase a class

reader or check out some readers from the FCU Library for individual reading.

Level Textbook & Its Description

Level 1 Q Skills for Success: Listening and Speaking Intro Q Skills for Success (Intro) encourages students to think critically

and succeed academically. Q's question- centered approach provides

a unique critical thinking framework for each unit. This develops key

cognitive skills such as analyzing, synthesizing, and evaluating, as

well as developing the language skills essential for academic success.

Level 2 Network 2: Get Connected Network 2 is a textbook focusing on an interactive approach, which

includes using social networking to link learners for common goals –

shared language success and professional growth. Social networking

themes are incorporated through a variety of classroom-based and

online tasks. These provide an authentic and meaningful context for

language learning.

Level 3 Network 3: Get Connected Network 3 is an English textbook to develop social networking skills

for language success. It invites students to engage in learning

activities that address social media and networking and combines

in-class activities with Internet activities.

Level 4 Global (Intermediate Level) The textbook focuses on developing communicative fluency, which more closely aligns with the goals of the FE Program. Note: Some Level 4 classes will be taught without a textbook. Novels

can be borrowed from the library.

2. Self Study Independent study consists of three components: (1) language-learning materials and

activities placed on the FCU iLearn system, (2) NGSL vocabulary book/list, and (3) an

extensive reading program, aimed at familiarizing students with modern language-learning

technology and helping them develop good study habits which will benefit them their entire

lives. Policies concerning which of these components to include have been set by each

level.

The FCU iLearn System (http://ilearn2.fcu.edu.tw) provides a digital

classroom where teachers post exercises, assignments, activities,

course-related resources, and on-line quizzes (please refer to Appendix A for

information on how to log in to the FCU iLearn System). If a teacher sets a

deadline for assigned work, then students won’t be able to access it after that time.

Basically, this means that students cannot turn in their homework late.

A teacher can also decide how many times students can access something. If it is a

listening exercise, students may be able to listen to it only once or twice. Whenever a

student finishes an assignment, the time and score are sent to the teacher and recorded in

the system’s grade book.

The New General Service List (NGSL) is a vocabulary list of the 2,800 words most

frequently used words of English. These are the most important words for any student

learning English. If you master this vocabulary, you will be able to talk about a wide variety

of topics at a conversational level, and you will know about 90% of the words of most

general English texts that you read. If you follow up your study of the NGSL with the 963

words of the New Academic Wordlist (NAWL), you will know 92% of the vocabulary used in

academic textbooks and journals. Your teacher will guide you in how to study the NGSL

words. Flashcard apps are available (i.e., NGSL Builder, Quizlet, and other apps that use

Quizlet’s database, like Flashcards by NKO).

Research has shown that extensive reading can greatly improve students’

reading comprehension, vocabulary acquisition, and writing skills if students

read simplified readers on a regular basis and for a long term. To fulfill this

goal, the FCU Library has purchased over 5000 copies of simplified readers

from different publishers. These books are rich in variety and categorized

into different vocabulary levels. They are available in a special area on B1 of the Library. All

freshmen regardless of their FE level can choose books based on their vocabulary ability

and reading preference. Each level will assign either a certain number of simplified readers

Page 9: Freshman English Student Manual

4

or a certain number of words to read per semester as homework which can be followed up

by in-class discussions, oral/written book reports, in-class quizzes, or a short on-line

mReader quiz to check whether the reader was actually read and understood.

The Foreign Language Center’s Self-Study Center (IEE Building, B1) offers 135

computers with high-speed Internet access for language proficiency assessment (i.e.,

TOEIC simulations). The opening hours of the Center and the rules of use are provided in

Appendix B.

In the second semester, Freshman English students will automatically be enrolled in a

non-credit required course entitled ‘Self-Introduction’. Here, students make an English

video presentation. This Information Literacy assignment is a cooperative endeavor

between the Center for General Education and the Foreign Language Center (FLC) and

counts as a graduation requirement. Students who need to retake the second semester of

Freshman English are, strictly speaking, exempt from this assignment if they passed the

video project earlier. Cash prizes will be awarded to the best videos at each of the four

levels. More information about the video project will be provided in class.

D. Grading In each semester, the overall score (i.e., 100) is composed of (1) coursework (45%), (2)

midterm exam (35%), and (3) final exam (20%), as explained below.

Grading for Each Semester

Coursework 45%

Total:

100

Midterm exam 35%

Final exam 20%

Regarding coursework, the 45% is based on in-class and self-study assignments (e.g.,

extensive reading, NGSL vocabulary, online work, projects, class participation, and quizzes).

Details of the assessment procedure will be customized to the specific needs of each level and

class.

The midterm exam grade includes a level-wide exam score (20%) and an interview grade

(15%). The level-wide midterm exam is designed based on the material covered in class to

evaluate students’ achievement. As for the interview component, every student is required to

complete three interviews per semester, with 5% allocated to each interview; in other words,

15% in total.

The program-wide final exam accounts for 20% of a student’s grade in each semester. That is,

Page 10: Freshman English Student Manual

5

students at all levels will take a unified English proficiency test as the final exam to measure

their general listening and reading proficiency.

E. Activities The FLC hosts a wide variety of student activities, contests, tutorials and other events during

the year. Teachers announce each activity in class, and students can check the FLC notice board

and website for the activity schedule and other announcements. Although none of these

activities is required for Freshman English students, all freshmen are strongly encouraged to

participate in any of these activities. Participation in activities can count as bonus marks

towards Freshman English credit, depending on each teacher’s policy.

1. Movie & Activity Nights The creation of language games and activities has been an on-going process. On

Wednesdays and Thursdays, a series of cooking classes, English Movie Nights, parties and

games are held in the EZ Café. They are usually quite popular because they give students

a chance to embrace other cultures and use English in a fun and relaxing atmosphere. For

the more seriously minded students, a series of speeches on a wide range of cultural topics

will be given by local and international students throughout the year. As to the activities

calendar for Fall 2015, please check the FLC website at http://www.fcuflc.fcu.edu.tw. We

have also set up an FLC Facebook site; search FCU Language Center, click “Like,” and you

will get almost daily updates about all FLC-related activities.

2. Annual English Contests Also open to all non-English-major undergraduates of FCU are various English contests in

the fall and spring terms. The FLC organizes a singing contest, a speech contest, a

literature reading contest, an anecdote telling contest, and a writing contest. Contestants

perform before an audience and a panel of judges, except in the case of the writing contest.

The top finalists in each contest are awarded prize money. Details about each contest will

be announced in the weeks prior to the contest.

Note: Those who have lived in an English-speaking country for over one year after the age

of six or studied in an English school for more than three years cannot participate in the

contests. However, restrictions on contestants’ qualifications do not apply to the singing

contest.

3. Daily Tutorials Students who want extra English conversation practice can stop by the Tutorial Corner in

the FLC anytime from 9:10 am–6 pm, Monday through Friday. Students who want to

practice sit together in the tutorial corner. Each 50-minute discussion is led by a different

Page 11: Freshman English Student Manual

6

teacher. The tutorial program was established with the idea of giving students an informal,

unscripted way of practicing their language skills outside the classroom. There is no need to

pre-register: Just show up. If there’s an empty seat on one of the sofas, sit down and start

talking!

Teachers may bring their own topics for discussion or just ask students to think of ideas.

Students are strongly encouraged to practice with as many different teachers as possible in

order to be exposed to a range of different accents, as well as a range of different teaching

styles.

4. Participation Record Whenever you participate in a tutorial, contest, activity, movie night, or other

English-related activity such as a speech or workshop, swipe in with your Student ID card.

Your participation will be electronically recorded in your Freshman English Interview app

grade book. At the end of the semester, teachers can check their students’ records in the

app in order to award bonus points to the more active participants. The FLC will, from time

to time, offer surprise gifts and rewards to its participating members.

F. Guidelines 1. Freshman English Exemption Criteria

Starting with the academic year 2013-2014, students can be exempted from taking the

required Freshman English course. Details regarding the evaluation criteria and type of

documents required for Freshman English course exemption will be announced by the

Foreign Language Center. Remember to apply for exemption within the time frame

provided. The Foreign Language Center will process all approved cases for official

exemption through the Academic Affairs Office.

2. English Proficiency Tests To provide students with ready access to a variety of language assessment tools to meet

their needs, different proficiency exams will be offered on campus throughout the school

year (e.g., TOEIC campus exams are offered on the last Sunday of every month). Students

who attain the required standard can apply for Sophomore English exemption and

scholarships. Furthermore, those with high scores can apply for the Honors Program.

3. Sophomore English Automatic Pass Criteria Students that meet the Sophomore English (SE) passing guidelines, that is, an official

TOEIC score of 400 or more, will receive an automatic pass in SE. Do not drop SE; if you

drop, there is no way to give you your automatic pass. Only those students who fail to meet

the passing guidelines will be required to complete SE work.

Page 12: Freshman English Student Manual

7

4. Junior English Starting with the academic year 2015-2016, all incoming students are required to take

Foreign Language in the Workplace (FLW), a two credit course, in their 3rd year.

5. Merit-Based Scholarships Merit-based scholarships will be awarded to students who achieve high scores and make

significant progress in internationally recognized 2nd language proficiency tests. Details can

be found on the FLC website.

6. Level Transfer Policy Students who feel they have been placed in a level that is too easy for them can ask their

FE teacher to move them up to the next level before the end of the add/drop period (Sept

22, 2015) in the first semester. Students who feel that they have been placed in a level that

is too difficult for them (and those who missed the fall semester add/drop deadline) can

apply for a level transfer with the FLC during the add/drop period of the spring semester.

To transfer from one level to another, students need to obtain the signature of their original

FE teacher.

7. Failing the Course Students who receive a failing grade in any semester have to retake the course that they

have failed, (fall and/or spring semesters), and will be placed at their most recently

assigned level. The first and second semesters of FE are considered to be two different

courses. Students must complete their requirement before graduating from this university.

8. Rules of Behavior The Freshman English Program has established a basic set of classroom rules. The

following rules are in place to make the classroom a better learning environment for the

whole class.

1. No food in class. No food is allowed during the class. In the self-study labs, neither

food nor drinks (except water) are allowed.

2. On-Time attendance. As coming in late disturbs the class, students are required to

attend the class on time.

3. No plagiarism. If students copy all or part of an assignment, they will receive a “zero”

for that assignment. Their teachers will NOT give them a chance to do the assignment

again. Teachers will also have their own rules of behavior for students. Following these rules

shows respect for both the teacher and the class.
