of the austenite)

UGIMA

® 4404 HM provides excellent corrosion resistance in natural atmospheres : watercourses, rural and

urban atmospheres, industrial atmospheres, even in the presence of moderate concentrations of chlorides and acids, in food and farm-produce environments and in numerous acid (sulphuric, phosphoric, organic) and chlorinated atmospheres, under certain temperature and concentration conditions. UGIMA

® 4404 HM effectively resists intergranular corrosion, even after welding, and passes the standardised

tests:

AFNOR NFA05-159,

ASTM A262 – 75 PRACTICE E,

DIN 50914, And, on request, special tests.

The use of UGIMA® 4404 HM is compatible with all fluids, lubricants, oils and greases applied in industry and

machining. UGIMA

® 4404 HM can be used in marine environments and in highly oxidising chemical atmospheres.

Optimum corrosion resistance is achieved on a surface free from traces of machining oils or foreign particles (of iron, for example). The pickling of UGIMA

® 4404 HM is comparable to that of a 1.4404 (316L) steel.

The decontamination of steels with a high sulphur content is not recommended because of the complexity of this operation and cost price; however, if it is necessary to carry this out, the recommended decontamination / passivation treatment is as follows:

nitric acid 52% (36° Bé) 1 volume

water 1 volume

at ambient temperature

short duration

finish with thorough washing

The corrosion resistance of a stainless steel depends on a number of factors, both in terms of the composition of the aggressive atmosphere (chloride concentration, presence or absence of oxidants, temperature, pH, whether or not there is agitation, etc.) and in terms of the material (surfaces free from ferrous particles, surface condition such as cold drawing, polishing, etc.). Experimental precautions must also be taken for certain tests, e.g. for saline mist (French standard NFX 41002): for example, the use of marking labels placed on the sample must be avoided as these could cause corrosion lures de corrosion run-outs and minimise the duration of resistance to the test.

Hot transformation

Forging

The forging of UGIMA 4404 HM does not pose any particular problems. Heating without special precautions up to 1150°-1180°C. Forging between 1180°C and 950°C (the best results being obtained between 1100 and 1180°C). Cooling in air or water, if no deformation is feared (priority will be given to cooling in WATER for high charges – avoid cooling stacked forgings in air).

Heat treatment The heat treatment of UGIMA® 4404 HM consists in quenching the metal in water or air after keeping it for a

long time at a high temperature of between 1000 and 1100°C. This solution annealing heat treatment enables all traces of cold drawing to be removed whilst providing the steel with its lowest level of Mechanical Properties (Rm between 500 and 650 MPa).

Machinability Thanks to specific optimization of the entire population, in terms of the machinability of the grade, UGIMA®

4404HM guarantees exceptional performances. Such performances are provided both in very high or severe

cutting conditions, thanks to the UGIMA®

2 process, but also under low or mild cutting conditions, thanks to

the new improvements made during development. Therefore UGIMA® 4404HM is particularly suited to

cutting from the bar, its improved machinability being effective for a wide range of cutting conditions and

machining operations. Its performance is based on very good fractionation of the chip, increased service

lives and very good surface conditions after machining.

If you want to derive maximum benefit from the potential of this grade, in terms of your parts and your

working environment, contact our Technical Consultation Department.

Welding UGIMA® 4404 HM can be welded without undue difficulty, with or without filling metal.

If a filling metal is required, use grades E316L (coated electrodes), ER316L (TIG), ER316LSi (MIG). To avoid any risks of hot cracking welding energies should be limited in their application. No heat treatment is required after welding.
